Hmmm, I've never been too keen on the idea of dry-shampoos for cats. Smokey doesn't mind a bath I just don't really want to until it's a bit warmer. I did use an itch relief spray when we got him and it didn't cause him any problems though.

I suppose any human interference with a cat's natural cleaning regime is not desireable but you have to help stinky persians out a little bit.

I've just caught Smokey standing on top of his fountain again  there's water everywhere!

It must be something about blues - Oscar mum's cat has a grubby chin as well!

I got viacutin from my vet but had to stop using it as Sol was allergic  :shify:

Not sure what this is like:

I give Jaffa viacutan from vetuk and it is very good.  Jaffa's fur is not in bad condition, but he has very thin, coarse fur (always has) and it's thinning as he ages so I started giving him viacutan.  There is a slight improvement when he's on that.

Does that come as tablets? Might be worth a try. I'll have a look thanks

He's being his usual grubby self this evening so I thought I'd get a picture. It's not a very good one but you can see the problem. I'll take before, during and after pictures when we bathe him, he'll love that!

Great pic!  :Luv2:

Cant you just wash his chin  ;D

I love ole Smokey  ;D

Well we may as well do him all over as the grubbiness goes right down his front and I don't think it hurts to wash his trousers either. Also, he won't keep still for two minutes so it's actually easier to bathe him.

He's like a small child. You know how you never know quite where it's coming from but there's always need to wash him!

Thanks Witty, I might do. He's on Sensible33 at the moment. That's supposed to be for sensitive skin as well as tums I think but they like the beauty one so I might try that too!

Off to H & B later!

Evening primrose oil is another one you might want to try - either the 250mg or 500mg capsules, again, pierced and squeezed over food.

Also, you could look into some of the RC foods i.e. Beauty & Fit 37 or Skin Care 33.

Thanks again Gillian. I had a couple of samples of Applaws th other day and it's the only wet food they haven't sneered at. They hated the tuna and seaweed but loved the chicken and cheese. I'm going to try to introduce them to it a little more regularly now that Smokey's stomach is fine.

The little monster's new thing is to stand on top of the dome part of his fountain so he gets and undercarriage wash! He then smears his wet fur on everything in sight.

I think switching to a Drinkwell fountain might help me there. I'll try and post some pictures of Smokey's grubbiness at some point but he's busy chasing things that don't exist at the moment...

He's stinky around his chin. He eats, drinks and grooms but seems to mix up the order sometimes. His bib is always damp and when he grooms it he gets half his fur stuck in his mouth. If I trim it with the clippers he finds more fur to get stuck there.

He's not the most dignified cat in the world. I'm forever cleaning his eyes, they're constantly messy (I think he probably had cat-flu at some point) but the main part of his fur is lovely.

How do I buy/give salmon oil, that sounds like a winner?

Thanks Gillian I hoped you'd reply!

Ahhh! yes I see now about the stinky fur round the chin/ruff - I've got one, Honey, who used to get very messy like that, she always seemed to have a bit of fur in her mouth! As you say, it helps a bit keeping that area trimmed but they find that fur whatever you do LOL! I found that when mine were all eating dry food only some years back, it was worse, because they were constantly drinking, especially Honey who would literally have her head always over the water bowl, but its not like that now they all have wet food mainly. A little bit of non-fragranced talc (like Simple) worked into the area and then combed through can help a bit.

There are a couple of really good eye care products that I use - Eye Envy is one http://eyeenvy.com/ - its a US product, but there is definitely one distributor in the UK in Surrey. A couple of downsides to it - its fairly expensive and it only has appprox 3 month shelf life even when stored in the fridge, but it is really effective. The other is Kleen-face http://www.dezynadog.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?cPath=37&products_id=1072&osCsid=8...6cf40654fedf9ae2e941590a4 which is cheaper and doesnt need to be stored in the fridge.

Oh, and yes, H&B do salmon oil - in capsules, so you can just pierce the end with a pin and squeeze onto food, or straight into mouth haha!  ;D

I agree, Gillian, any 'moisturised' once would only be focussing on the hair, you need to focus on the skin condition.

Now it's starting to get a bit milder I'm hoping to bath Smokey.
I want to either bathe him in the cat-equivalent of Dove or find a cream that's the cat-equivalent of E45.

Does anyone know of any decent brands? I've got some generic sensitive cat-shampoo and was looking at a kitten one today but I really want to add some moisture to his skin.

his fur is in great condition. He's a little stinky though so definately needs a bath  .

I don't think you can really add moisture to the skin from the outside,  - I think you need to look at improving his skin by perhaps giving him something like salmon oil to help from the inside out, if you see what I mean?

Any sensitive cat shampoo will probably be fine, but don't forget, shampooing will initially remove oils from the skin, although it usually recovers over a couple of days. One thing I would say though,  is don't bother using a conditioner after shampooing - they tend to make the coat lank (found that one out when I first started grooming LOL!)

I don't know why he would be stinky though, unless he gets poo stuck around his back end at all, as longhairs are prone to do?

Now it's starting to get a bit milder I'm hoping to bath Smokey.

When I was grooming him the other day I noticed his skin was a little dry and has a brownish tint to it. It's definately not fleas, he's frontlined religiously, the house was RIPd a month ago and I've flea-combed him to make triple sure. I think it might be either sensitive skin or some kind of mild surface scarring from his flea-sores (he has an allergy and was chronically infested 5 months ago when we got him).

I want to either bathe him in the cat-equivalent of Dove or find a cream that's the cat-equivalent of E45.

His skin certainly doesn't seem to be causing him any discomfort and his fur is in great condition. He's a little stinky though so definately needs a bath  .
