I'm so glad Maddy's a bit better. I know how anxious it is and what a rollercoaster with some days better or worse than others. There are quite a few conditions where cats have to take synulox continuously for weeks or months as the benefits outweigh any risks.
For kidney infections for eg, not that uncommon in CRF, it's about a 6 week treatment. I think you can stop and start too. Tanya's CRF site mentions that some CRF cats are on abs for a long time or on abs for a few days every month - whatever works.
I hope she keeps on eating a bit by herself. I know how great that can make you feel

Maddy appears stabilised today.

She is drinking well and I have syringe fed her today.

She enjoyed a few whiskas temptation treats which I was overjoyed to see her eat.

I really like the Renalzin. It comes as a paste in a pump and you can dose really accurately. It mixes into food well and I'm hoping as its new to the market that its better than Ipakitine. It also contains vitamin E which is known to have a beneficial effect against toxins in the body.

As long as you feel she has fight in her and prospect of recovery, don't give up.

I have no experience with CRF, but some peeps on Purrs have cats who seem to do well with it.

There are times when the benefits of antibiotics far outweigh the danger of resistant strains.

Lots of good vibes for Maddy and you. Try to take it easy so that you cope with the strain of nursing her. Easier said than done, I know.

I do sympathise - it's so wearing on you to be constantly anxious, apart from anything else

I hope things will improve, and that you have some quality time with Maddy, however long or short that time is

Thanks you guys x

Well. I had to go back to work today. My boss had kindly allowed me to go home on Sunday as I arrived late and in total shock having just seen Maddy fall off the cat tree and collapse under her own paws. I had quickly syringe fed her and given her subcutaneous fluids and she didn't want to eat or drink. To be honest I burst into tears as soon as I arrived at work on Sunday. I really thought that was it. I was going to have to make that phone call.

So going back to work today was frightening. You guys will understand with a sick cat how you suddenly find yourself constantly assessing them. I wasn't sure if she would eat or drink. Madam will only drink volvic now and I had to leave bowls of it in places I guessed she would mostly likely drink from.

She's been back on the antibiotics for 2 days now (3rd course) and I have to say she is a little better. I have decided to continue syringe feeding her for a few more days as she really is skin and bone right now. She has drank lots of water since I got home and I managed to get her purring and doing headbutts against a sissal post.

Now each time she has started taking antibiotics she has improved at the same time (the second day) and she deteriorates at the same time. So I'm scared for her to stop taking them. Its been a bit of a battle convincing my vet to prescribe 2 weeks worth. I understand the need not to overuse antibiotics so bacteria don't become resistant like in humans but the fact remains that the only time she improves is when she's on them and she deteriorates when not.

I'm starting Maddy on a new phosphate binder tomorrow called Renalzin. I have read that you shouldn't give fortekor within 2 hours of certain phosphate binders including Ipakitine (which I currently use) as it can affect the absorption of Fortekor.

So still taking it a day at a time and sometimes an hour at a time.

But at least right now I feel its not time. Something I was contemplating on Sunday.

Swampy was on noroclav for nearly 6 weeks for possible urinary/kidney infection and that's the same as synulox. Vet said it was very safe to use longer term. I hope it works for Maddy and she feels better. good for her on the volvic, mine went through an evian phase too!

She's on synulox.

The first time she had antibiotics 6 weeks ago after the first blood test, she had 5 days worth and improved. Then she deteriorated again and had a second course of 7 days worth with her improving again.

Then she deteriorated again and is now on 2 weeks worth.

My vet feels the CRF is probably down to her having such a bad mouth infection found when I rescued her necessitating the extraction of nearly all her teeth.

In my belief that means it was a chronic infection that was there for some time. I'm hoping that 2 weeks worth of antibiotics will address that.

I would say today she is a tiny bit better than yesterday. Taking it an hour at a time right now. At least she is drinking again today. She will no longer drink tap water and so madam gets Volvic mineral water.

She improved the last 2 times she had antibiotics. I debated the fact that I thought she needed a longer course as she improved both times before so I'm hoping and praying that the 2 weeks worth will help.

Here's hoping  Lots of positive vibes heading your way

Gillian, She was only diagnosed with CRF 6 weeks ago.

It seems to be happening so fast.

Tiffy had CRF for over a year before I saw him like this.

She improved the last 2 times she had antibiotics. I debated the fact that I thought she needed a longer course as she improved both times before so I'm hoping and praying that the 2 weeks worth will help.

I don't know what else to do right now. She's only 9 and I only rescued her 3 years ago. She's too young for all this.

Maddy had been looking really ill since Sunday morning.

I'm keeping up all the CRF treatments and giving her subcutaneous fluids but I feel inside its not working.

She just looks so fed up.

She's on Fortekor, Potassium (tumil K), Phosphate binders and Famodipine.

And now she's on antibiotics again (2 weeks worth) so I am going to see how she is tomorrow (day 1 was today)

I feel so scared right now. I feel I'm losing her.

Please everyone send healing vibes and prayers for this special raggie.
