I've only just seen this thread Kate and just wanted to add my condolences on the loss of your beautiful, brave boy.

Swampy was such a special boy who bore all his problems so bravely and was very lucky to have a mum who looked after him so well and fought so hard for him.

We will all miss him. RIP Swampy reunited with Max now forever at the bridge

sweetie I sounds like he may not want to learn - some people just get stuck in a rut and like to stay there, in the future (and I sincerely hope that day will come soon as you have so so much to offer) when you have more furry family I'd shop around for another vet who is a bit more up to date in his/her approach

Thats exactly what i was going to say Dawn - i totally agree.

I love the Swampy pictures -what a proud Handsome boy he looks in them .
I will miss his updates .

No you are right, I am in SE London. I promise you he's the best vet around this area, that's why he is so incredibly busy. He was the 4th vet I tried when Swampy was terribly ill with liver disease in 2006 - the other 3 were worse than useless.  One of them even wrote "owner won't pay for blood tests" on my notes! She'd said maybe we had to send off blood to the USA and it took 2 weeks and I said that Swampy couldn't wait 2 weeks to be treated......current vet saved Swampy's life. I don't mean to put him down but I think he could have a more open mind sometimes to new treatments.

You would think in this day and age a vet (especially where CRF is concerned) would take anything on board, CRF is still a learning experience for all concerned!

Thank heavens you persevered with him Kate!  :Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2:

@ Dawn....I dont think Kate has another vet in her area!  :tired:

Seems the vet has taken nothing on board from Swampy's experience. He won't take back any meds that were "just for Swampy" as if Swampy was the only cat to have renal disease! I asked for a couple that were suggested by my yahoo group, that are widely used to help CRF cats in America. Because he doesn't routinely prescribe them and doesn't really actively encourage palliative care (he learnt as we went along, especially about sub cuts) but my impression is that he tends to suggest pts on diagnosis of moderate to advanced CRF really, he doesn't seem interested. It's so disappointing as he's not a bad vet at all and isn't too old to be too set in his ways.

Even Selgian, which with Istin helped Swampy to beat vestibular disease against the odds, he's not keen to keep prescribing. It saddens me.  And Zithromax which is an ab which so sadly fixed Swampy's cold just before he passed away. I wish we'd known about it earlier when his CRF was better.

Swampy's calcium went up above normal before his phosphorus did (it was the combo of those 2 being elevated that finished him off; his creatinine wasn't end stage). The vet told me that fussing (I'd read Tanya's CRF site on the subject) about his calcium was a red herring. No it wasn't as when the phosphorus, which had been normal, started to climb too when he was off renal food and on a/d, it was lethal within 3 weeks.
So I'd say if you have  a CRF cat with calcium or phosphorus above normal but not yet both of them, use binders in all food and watch the calcium levels of what you give them too.  I just want Swampy's experience to be able to help others.

just wanted to post a couple of photos from when Swampy was little. One as a kitten and the other as an 18 month old boy. He was an outdoor cat then and had so many friends in the area (but got into everyone's houses, ended up stuck in a cellar and then he became an indoor cat as he was heading for disaster). He was in great shape from the exercise he got wearing his little red harness and his extender lead. I love these photos - they are hard copy scanned ones obviously.  All my other photos of him and Max are in storage in SA.  I wanted to post another one of him in middle years but can't find it in the pictures folder. I have such happy memories of him when he was little. He was mad and so cute and loving and playful and slept in our bed every night with his head on the pillow and the duvet tucked under his chin, just like us.

thanks and huge hugs to everyone. It alternates between feeling unreal and all too terribly real.  I will post some photos of Swampy at various ages when I can and also open him a thread in Rainbow Bridge for future posts. But thanks, it's a huge comfort to have this thread still here and I will copy it page by page to my hdd in the next week or two, when I can face it.

Someone in America sent me this poem, which is just lovely. I love to think of my boys on angel laps and Swampa purring on God's head.

CAT HEAVEN
by Cynthia Rylant

The way to Cat Heaven is a field of sweet grass
where crickets and butterflies play.

A cat may be late in getting to Heaven . . .
there's so much fun on the way!
But an angel will wait
at the yellow front door,
wait til a kitty
comes home.

And when she arrives,
he'll give her a kiss
and some milk
in a bowl all her own.

There are trees
in Cat Heaven,
trees made just for cats,
trees growing
so green and so high.

But no one gets stuck in a tree
anymore --
if a cat wants down,
she will fly!

And oh the toys,
kitty toys everywhere,
thousands and thousands
go by.

There are buttons and baubles
and small cotton mice --
there is catnip afloat
in the sky!

There are angels,
of course,
with soft angel laps
where kitties can purr
loud and strong.

The angels will rub
kitties' noses and ears
and sing them
a Cat Heaven song.

And when cats are hungry,
there's God's kitchen counter
all covered with
white kitty dishes,
full of tuna and salmon
and mounds of sardines,
and wonderful little pink fishes.

The cats in Cat Heaven
are so loved and spoiled
God lets them all
lie on his bed . . .
He walks in His garden
with a good black book
and a kitty
asleep on His head.

Then when a cat needs,
she may just simply ponder
and watch the blue world deep and wide . . .

She will watch the old house
where she once lived and wandered,
and the people who loved her inside.

All cats love Heaven,
they know the way there,
they know where
the angel cats fly.

They'll run past the stars
and the moon and the sun . . .
. . . to curl up with God in the sky.

(Dedicated by Cynthia Rylant to Caps, Nick and Edward VelvetPaws)

Kate please accept me sincere condolences.  I am so sorry I have only just seen this thread (I have been wrapped up in my own little world recently  :( ).

My heart goes out to you and hubby at this terrible time. But I'm sure Swampy and Max will now be reunited and playing together again.

RIP Swampy ... play hard at the bridge little man.  Much loved and sorely missed.

so many thanks and bless you all. We are back. Swampy is home. He is next to Max on their windowsill. Dignity were as usual, very good. Swampy looked so beautiful, he looked at peace and not old and sick at all. We said him a prayer and then we sang him his choccy monster song but it was so hard to say goodbye - or au revoir. We told him he had a french passport so he knew what that meant.
OH chose him a wooden casket with little blue flowers on it and we got it inscribed with his name and dates and a couple of lines from his own choccy monster song. I used to sing it to him at 3am under the futon's duvet and he'd purr like a farm convention of tractors while he lay in my arms.
It was a long and tiring trip in bad weather but worth it as he is now home forever, in our hearts forever.  On the way there we saw a big rainbow; we feel it was sent by both boys so Swampy and Max are now together again and playing ear back, play-fight games and curling up together in the sunshine.
