Title: POOR LITTLE CAT.
Post by: Ela on March 23, 2007, 14:57:54 PM
I received a phone call this morning from a lady who said she was walking her dogs in a woods when she noticed some kids in a den, also inside was a cat that they were passing round, she asked who the cat belonged to and the den fell silent. So she took the cat off the kids. I Immediately contacted Donna one of my fosterers who lives near the lady and she went to collect the little one. Poor thing it only has one eye, is emaciated and might be deaf.  She put it straight in the van and as she was approaching Town realized to her horror that there was very little petrol and she had no money on her. She pulled into a petrol station and asked if she could have petrel as she needed to get to the vet urgently, fortunately as it was our CP van they realized it was genuine and  let her have petrol and took her watch as a deposit. The little one is now on a drip and having bloods 'done'. Fingers crossed that we got the cat on time.

This was the second emergency of the day, fortunately the first one was chipped and its owner soon found.

I hope the police were contacted and these kids get a good beating! . Poor kitty - safe now but who knows what would have happened if the lady wasn't around. When we were kids, we would have taken a stray to the police station or at least taken it home for our mum to sort out.

what a shame ela, I do hope it is ok.
Thank goodness the garage gave her the petrol.

can just imagine what the kids were going to do but partially sighted and deaf..it must have been pertrified having been passed around.. A card of thanks to that dog walker woman i think what a star she was intervening and not just "minding her own business"

of course they might have been well meaning kids and just petting it not realising they were probably frightening it.

The chance would be a fine thing. What I cannot understand is why were they not at school? I mean when we played hooky or whatever you call it nowadays we used to go to a friends dad house cos we knew he would be out all day. I always remember I and 2 friends did it for a week, On the Friday Mum found out and made me stay in my room all weekend.  On the Monday she took me to school and told the Headmistress what we 3 had done. I though that it the cane, but all the headmistress said to me was right Elaine off you go to your class room and tell Mary and Marianne I want to see them. When then came back to the class they had been given the cane. I felt so guilty.

Of out vet feels that the little one can have a quality life, then no matter how much it costs us, we will pay and hopefully find a home that the little one deserves.

Hearing so many bad things lately, it shows there are good people around - I'm so happy for the poor cat - one of the lucky ones  :catluv:

I agree Ela, so many people are scared to intervene when they see bad things now. I takes a lot of guts even to tackle some kids now. If a grown up told us off when we were kids we were petrified.

Just found out this morning the little bu :censored: ers were swinging the poor little soul round by its neck. Anyway the good news is Donna can pick it up from the vets and even better news is that if the owner does not turn up (we usually give 2 weeks) someone who was in the vets yesterday has just rung me  and offered it a home. Bless. Not so many people want an old cat with one eye and possibly deaf.

Yeayyyy. A new home being offered that quickly. Wonderful. :)

Little sods. It makes me really annoyed, I grew up in a fairly rough area and would never have dreamed of treating an animal that way, and still wouldn't obviously!

I'm currently sat having to endure listening to a mini motorbike due to two young lads driving it up and down the street repeatedly....aggghhh!

Oops when my daughter was 5 she had a 50cc Italjet, mind you she was always taken onto a country park or when we went to the Isle  of Man she used to ride on the beach in the evenings  which you could do at TT time.

I think the Police have the powers nowadays to confiscate the bikes  if ridden on the streets and rightly so in my opinion. I know some Police forces have been doing this for a time now.

Leaving aside my thoughts about the children (with difficulty) does that mean that the little cat has been given the provisional all-clear by the vet and has been prescribed food, shelter and TLC?

Brilliant news about the potential home, Ela. This is the sort of cat I'd want to adopt myself - I'd want to try and compensate her for the treatment she has endured, somehow.

Yes the little one seems to be coming along very nicely thank you. Wonderful what 24 hours on a drip will do. All bloods were fine and also FeLV & FELV test clear. No need for food, shelter and TLC to be perscribed, that comes automatically, with us anyway.

I have absolutely NO problem with kids having stuff like that. What I do object to is two lads of around 15 tramming up the pavement right next to our house and then zooming down the middle of the road. Not only is it noisy, it's also bloomin' dangerous! And to add insult to injury, they live two streets away and come onto our street especially to use the bike! >:( They're what we consider to be "problem" kids. One of my friends gave them verbal both barrels once(not how I'd have dealt with them, but he was being antagonised)and their mother came out and told him off for "shouting at her kids!" Their parents basically let them run riot and if anyone tries to do anything, shout at whoever is attempting to discipline their children.

In fact, what happened to this poor cat...well, let's just say I wouldn't put it past them. And I do feel that it would be the parents fault on this particular case, having seen how much structure they get from them.

Jack we had a problem with mini motor bikes up and down our street .... I phoned the police and reported them!  It is illegal to ride them on public roads..  I said I was concerned for their safety as they are so low t the ground a driver could easily hit them!  Of course in reality I couldn't give a stuff about the little  :censored: but it prompted the police to drive round the area several times and give them a warning.  We've had no problems recently  ;)

I would like to thank one of the Purrs members who has offered to make a donation towards the vet bill for the little one now named Nelson. Not only does he have one eye and is elderly, Donna has just advised me he is also most certainly deaf. The thought of what he must had been going through in the kids hands of those kids is to awful to contemplate.

The kind offer by the member helps to us to rekindle our faith in human nature.

Poor little Nelson :( ..It saddens me to think that anyone especially a child who is supposed to be innocent would be capable of something s sad ..I dont understand how they can think it is just okay to do something like this !?

As for the Motorbikes my next door neighbours one door down little boy has one of those silly bikes and thinks it is fun to dive it around our garden used to scare my Snarf to bits :(

Mad when i was 15 and wanted to do something naughty I would scribble so and so smells on my text book or go and buy some ''singles'' fags from the ice cream man ...Not terrorise an innocent animal ..

Sorry only just come back on been to the pub for a wine or 2

Nelson is coming on remarkably well, it is surprising what 24 hours on a drip, and a bath and lots of little and often meals with TLC will do. Last night Donna took him into her lounge  and he jumped on her knee and cuddled up, she was so happy she phoned  to tell me. To think he was in such a state (a vet was called out of surgery to attend to him  as staff were so worried he would not make it if he did not receive immediate attention) only a couple of days ago .

Poor little boy, so glad he is on the mend.  Do you think he is a stray or genuinely homeless?  It would be fantastic if he already had an owner who was out there looking for him.  If not does the offer of a home from the person at the vets still stand?

Bit of a sweeping generalisation, just because the area's bad, doesn't mean the owners are. Sorry, just my opinion.

No need to be sorry we are all entitled to an opinion, but I can honestly say the estate is a nightmare, you can possibly count on one hand the number of good families. It is the estate where we had 38 unneutered toms tested and  35 were FIV+, Cats  and kittens are always roaming the streets and every week without exception there are RTA's. We deal with more problems on that estate than the rest of our area out together.

The lady who is interested in Nelson has just rung and Donna is going to see her, Of course we need to keep him foe another 10 days to make sure no one claims him.

We need some luck today as it is been one thing after another. I have just found out more about the little RTA, apparently it had been roaming around for a while and people were just feeding it.  The cat was chipped and when the vet contacted the owner in Bletchley, (that’s in Bucks isn’t it?) they said they signed the cat over to Cats Protection 4 years ago, not our branch obviously. So how it got to Chesterfield I don’t know. This should be a reminder to people to always remember to amend chip details if a cat is re-homed. It is also another reason we say if you think a cat is either lost, abandoned, the owner has moved and left it behind DO NOT ASSUME IT HAS NO OWNER (OR ASSUME IT HAS), PLEASE REPORT IT TO US IMMEDIATELY, whatever state it may be in. It may simply be lost and could have been lost months previously. It is not unknown for cats to get into cars, removal vans, and so on, and be transported miles from their homes..  Most of the cats who go missing must be out there somewhere and, although we do manage to reunite quite a few with their owners, most of them are taken in or being fed by well meaning people, but are never actually reported, depending on the condition of the cat and the safety of the location we can decide what course of action to take to ensure the cat receives all the help it needs. (Where this cat it would certainly have been sooner rather than later)  E.G. if the cat is well please ring our lost & found xxxxxxxxxx take the cat to a vet to see if has been micro chipped, alternatively if you live near some of our fosterers (5 have microchip readers) they will do it for you. If there is no record perhaps you could on a long thin piece of paper write do I belong to you and your telephone number then attach the paper to a cat collar by wrapping sellotape round and round then put the collar on the cat if after 3 days you have received no reply take the collar off as they are considered dangerous and many cats have lost their life to them, ring us and we will put the cat on the list waiting to come in. If you ring Elaine xxxxxxxxxxs he will supply you with a paper collar which is very safe.  PLEASE OFFER THE CAT SHELTER &  FEED IT, I KNOW SOME ORGANIZATIONS SAY DON'T AND THEY IT WILL MOVE ON, HOWEVER IN OUR VIEW THAT IS CALLOUS, I AM SURE IF YOU LOST A PET IT WOULD BE NICE TO THINK SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE WAS CARING FOR IT. ALSO THE CAT HAS A GREATER CHANCE OF FINDING ITS OWNER  OR COMING INTO CARE AS IT IS NOT ROAMING FROM STREET TO STREET LOOKING FOR ITS NEXT MEAL AND ENDANGERING ITS LIFE (exactly what happened in this case) .f the cat appears below par PLEASE  contact us immediately and we will pay for the cat to be seen by a vet and if possible bring the cat in.

I am afraid  we will now be looking for another home for Nelson, I cannot say anything on here, but the lady who was going to adopt him will be taking in another cat tomorrow, all I will say thats cats need is greater than Nelsons. I will put Nelsons pic on our gallery tomorrow and his pic will be in the paper this week anyway with Eric our vet when they write about him being in the last 3 in the Pet plan Vet of the year comp.

There was a cat I collected for Sharon a few weeks ago. The woman said he had been hanging round for days. I asked her if she had fed him. she said "no, I didn't want to encourage it". Also Sharon asked her if she could put him somewhere safe until he could be collected as she lived on a main road but she said she didn't want to put him in the shed as he would feel trapped and it would affect him  . He ate 3 pouches of food before nodding off in my kitchen!. Sharon said the woman called last week to ask if she could adopt him - guess what Sharon said? (Stanley has been homed anyway  ;D )

Pic of Stanley after his feed - he nicked Willow's chair  :Luv:

He is adorable. We said at the time, if there was any way possible we would have adopted him ourselves. Even willow who hates other cats (including my other ones) wasn't bothered by him. He was hissing at her though and we have had a lot of stress issues with her (had the carper cleaner out 3 times this week!) so couldn't risk it. When I 1st picked him up, he was rubbing faces and purring - the perfect kitty  :Luv:

if i was a fosterer id be tempted to keep the ones like nelson that have really really had a bad time to ensure

If we did that we would have over 1000 cats at any time. You cannot keep them no matter how endearing they are as you would soon be so full you would be able to take in any more. The idea of rescue is to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome.

why is it that so often the neglected ones are the nicest, i suppose they are grateful of the luv and attention.

Ive known so many pampered puss's that are basically spoilt brats  :-: (not mentioning any names  :evillaugh:)

Oh well im glad the other deserving case is getting the ladies attention.

w is Nelson getting on, Ela?

Do you know what, for a minute I had to think Nelson who's Nelson. As you know we have had so many problem cats to deal with in the last couple of days. I have also just has to authorise a very sick feral who was blind, deaf FIV and FeVL +be gently PTS, although I know it is necessary it still hurts.

Nelson is fine thank you and coming along very nicely.

Nelson and another cat Donna is fostering are going in today for Thyroid ops. I am sure both will be very soon back to full health and strength. Although the circumstance that Nelson came into our care was not good, in a way it possibly did him a favour as he now has all the necessary vet care to ensure a long and happy life.

I hope the hyperthyroid operations went well.  I hope that the vet is keeping a check on calcium and liver enzyme levels.  As we found out with Tarzan who had his thyroid glands and some teeth removed recently, calcium and liver levels can drop.

One problem with this operation is if the throid glands are very small, their removal can occasionally include the removal of much smaller parathyroid glands which can also affect calcium and liver efficiency. It is never the intention of vets to remove these glands but it is very delicate and fiddly surgery.

I hope the vet is monitoring this Ela.

You are totally correct pete, the paras are often attached to the thyroids are barely noticable by eye alot of the time.  We alway had bilateral thyroidectomys hospitalised for at least 3 days post op with strict monitoring via blood tests.  Its not quite so bad in unilateral removals if its the first side.

If it was Ela's normal vet i'm sure they would have been very particular as they always seem to be.

I do hope Tarzan has now recovered fully.  Was this the little one that was always very thin or am i confusing with one of the others.

Nice to hear from you btw ;D.

The vet had stated before the op that they would do a dental later. However a couple of days befor the op Donna found 1 tooth that had dropped out in the bathroom and the mouth was in such a bad state that the vet had no choice but to do the dental as well.

Hi Lynn,

Yes Tarzan had gone down to 2.5kg. He was so hyperactive and I should have spotted it earlier - no excuses. As I type he is looking at my computer screen. Since the operation he has slowed down as hoped. He now weighs 3.2 kg. The vet was always looking for him to be 3kgs. He is a small lad with a big personality. We don't want him to go beyond about 3.3kg as he is 3 legged and too much weight will hinder him.

I posted a picture of him on the gallery although I didn't reduce the size -through ignorance of how to do it.

Incidentally, totally unrelated and at a massive tangent, have you seen the veterinary surgery on the yellow pages advert? That was taken at my vets and features young vet Christie and nurse Mary? I haven't got their autographs yet  :) :) :)

THis is great news Pete i am very pleased as you used to worry about his weight..now you can worry again but for opposite reasons LOL.
I had forgotten he had 3 legs.  I hope he continues in good health.

PS nope i havent seen that pic but you can be sure i will look out for it now  ;D

I am sorry to say that little Nelson had to be gently PTS this morning, he started to fall over during the last few days and then started to toilet everywhere, he was taken to the vets on Saturday and placed in a pen for his own safety, but today he went down hill very fast, the vet said there was some medication she could give but the prognosis was not good and he would not have a quality life. Donna made the sad decision of the final act of kindness, rightly so in my opinion. At least he knew what TLC was during the last 7 weeks of his life.
Thank you to the member who contributed towards his vet bill.

I am so sorry to hear this.  I take consolation from the fact that, rather than being left to wander alone or tortured at the hands of those teenagers, Nelson was loved and cared for at the end of his life.

Hi Ela,

I've just seen this sad news. I'm so very sad that the little guy didn't make it. Like some of the cats that people discuss on Purrs, I feel that I knew him which is strange since I never had the privilege to meet him. :( :( :(

You described the symptoms but what did the vet diagnose?

RIP Nelson. I just hope that you witnessed love as you did towards the end for the majority of your life.

The vet thought he may have had a stroke. I know cats can often overcome a stroke but sadly Nelson was not strong enough to win the battle.
