Post by: Maddiesmum on January 20, 2009, 20:57:26 PM
He has hyperesthesia.  I am a bit cross because I have been telling my vet this for weeks!  Anyway this will be a long post so here goes :

Sarah is lovely she is very knowledgeable and very thorough.  She went through Charlie's known history from day one very carefully asking lots of questions.  She said his stress is at a very high level and the main factor is the high concentratin of cats in a small arear (15 cats between 9 houses).  She interacted with him and said he is a social and beautiful cat but she could see his stress levels were high and were mainly concentrated on checking out his territory.  She said the catproofing is a positive thing in his environment as it stops other cats encroaching on his territory.  She said she doesn't think the field is a major issue and she can well understand why I have catproofed as, as she was driving to my house, cars were flying past her.  She has given me a treatment programme to try for 3 weeks to see how he responds.  If no better he will have to go on the cat version of Prozac for about three months and then be weaned off it.

She is confident he can be helped.  She said I am doing all the right things but have to do some of them a bit differently.  ie his play has to be gentler of less duration and more frequent.  He has to have quiet and calm, no sudden movements, loud voices etc.  I am not to approach him but to let him instigate all tactile contact and she showed me how to stroke him so it is a nice experience for him.  Under no circumstances am I to touch his tummy, no matter if he offers it to me.  His food has to be broken down into 6 meals a day and must not be ritualised.  I have to try to slip it there with no production and make more use of his automatic feeder.  I have to put some frosted stick on stuff on my dining room window to stop him seeing next door's cat Sophie and I have to try to put some plants to block his view of her when he is in the garden.

I asked her about another cat and she said 200% NOT.  I also asked her about the FIP and she said whilst she could not guarantee it wont mutate it is very unlikely to.

She has given me four pages of handwritten notes which her secretary will type up and email to me.  I have 12 months unlimited telephone/email assistance and she has completed the insurance forms and is claiming it as vet fees so the insurance company should pay it all (bar the excess of course).  If I am struggling with any of her recommendations, or Charlie does not seem to respond, I am to contact her immediately and she will revise the method.  I liked her a lot.

I don't think I mentioned before but I found a lump near Charlie's bottom the day before yesterday.  He has not liked it being touched.  She had a look and said it is an anal gland abscess and needs a/bs.  She will ring my vet tomorrow and ask her to prescribe some to avoid the need for Charlie to be stressed by a vet visit.  She will also update my vet with the diagnosis, treatment plan and any further issues.

I feel so relieved but frustrated that I have suspected this for ages.

Anyway there you go, thanks to all of you for your support, it is, as ever, much valued and appreciated and, of course, I will keep you updated.
xxx

Well that all sounds very promising  ;D  I can understand you feeling mad that she says he has hyperesthesia after your vet wasn't buying it  :innocent:  She seems to have got her head around the situation very quickly and come up with some good ideas for helping Charlie.  And good to know the catproofing is a good idea, and the field not as big a problem as you thought.  Glad you feel more positive about things now.  Although Charlie still has his problems, at least you now have some possible solutions and if they don't work you have someone who is willing to work with you to find something that does work.  And it all shows what a good meowmy you are and that none of this is your fault

:wow: A positive result!  That really sounds like she is going to help.  I was going to say help you get to the bottom of it - but if Charlie has an abscess on his b*m it wouldn't be the best choice of words!!
Im so pleased that everything seems to be sorting itself out.  I realise there is still a way to go but at leat you have a diagnosis and it confirms what you had worked out for yourself.  Its always nice to know you aer right, isnt it? :)

Good luck, will be keeping fingers crossed and am sending some of these in the meantime    - you must be  :tired:  exhausted  :)

Post by: Maddiesmum on January 21, 2009, 16:42:03 PM
Well Leanne I am in no doubt it will be hard work.  There is a new cat appeared in the neighbourhood which is causing territorial wars again!!! Looks like it might be a stray as Nigel my neighbour fed it earlier and it ate three bowls straight off and looks a bit dirty too.

I am going to do my level best to stick to what Sarah advised but I think the food one will be the hardest as Charlie has his food routine etc.  He has an automatic one meal feeder and I have ordered a two meal one today so I will try and put three meals in those which will detach me from the meal process a bit.  Then he can have his biscuits in his egg box and I will just have to try and hide stuff round the house (though I did try this morning and the little so and so found them all in 30 seconds and wolfed them).

I have bought the stick on frosting for the window just need to get it up.  Had a chat with my neighbour about deterring her cat Sophie and we have agreed we might try the rubber spikes so she can't sit down but it wont hurt her.  Also will have to get some sort of climber to cover the corner although Roz did advise against having climbers up the cat proofing.

He now has his a/bs and metacam and took them well at lunch time.  I hope you all don't mind if I keep you posted?  Also had a little gentle game with a feather this morning but then had to go to the Dogs Home and so a load of admin on my return so haven't really had another playtime yet.  He did escape out the front door when I came home though.  He didn't run off just wandered into the front garden and let me bring him back in.

I am relieved that we have a diagnosis, sad it is all caused by stress and a bit tired from all the worrying but ever onwards!  Thanks again to you all for your support and hope you don't mind if I "lean" on you for the next few weeks.  Sarah said it is not a quick fix and could take up to about 6 months - especially if he has to have the meds.

tbh you sound calmer already and that has got to make you feel better, its just good to know you have a proper path to follow - re the climbers - I have roses but they do pull on the cat proofing and have to be trimmed so wouldn't advise them I do have a black sambuca, not a climber but grows through and is so spindly they could never climb up it

All sounding good so far

With regards to climbers on the cat proofing - I've got climbers (clematis) completely covering one part of my cat proofed area and it doesnt really make much difference, the mesh is still wobbly enough for cats not to be able to gain foothold, especially with it being at an angle (if they were ever to try - which I've not seen them do!)

The treatment programme has commenced!  The window is now frosted and has made a great deal of difference already.  He had a cursory look and has since not once been trying to see if there is anyone waiting outside.  The only problem I have with it is I can't look out the window to check on him etc.  I have to stand on a chair LOL

feeding regime is a difficult one.  Charlie is very food conscious and knows exactly when his feeds are due.  As my house is open plan there is no chance of doing meals in secret as his nose is in the bowl as soon as I am there.  I am making use of his automatic feeder which deals with one meal a day and have ordered a two meal one so that, ultimately, takes care of three meals altogether.  However I do have to administer his Zylkene and at the mo a/bs and metacam so that compounds the difficult.  I have made a start on his puzzle feeder (which is a Yakult bottle) supposed to put holes in it but haven't yet.  He has got the hang of it though and is gleefully batting it round trying to extract his bikkies.  Also he uses his egg box.  My worry is the increase in biscuits this requires coupled with less strenuous exercise is going to result in a fat cat, albeit more calm.

Have to say he is calmer this morning, has had two gentle plays has been in the garden, got soaked and is now snoozing happily on the dining table despite my lodger crashing about upstairs :)

That's our update for today. :)

I know where you are coming from with the food thing, its really hard when they have an inbuilt alarm clock. Could you prepare meals in a room with Charlie shut out?

Also what about giving Charlie his tablets yourself and not in food or is that a stupid suggestion, how is he taking tablets?

thanks Leanne.  My house is open plan so it is difficult to do the food in secret but I am working on it, have managed to secrete his lunch in his automatic feeder without him realising YET.

He has to have his abs and metacam on his food as I don;t want to stress him by pilling and syringing him but will work on that too.  I feel more positive about it all myself having seen an improvement re the window situation already,

It;s turning into the diary of Charlie the cat aged 1 and eleven twelfths

Hi Chrissie, just caught up with all your news on Charlie. I'm sorry he has got what you feared all along but on the other hand I'm pleased it is nothing to do with not being able to get out of your garden. At least you haven't the heartache of having to let him go.
It is  good she has given you hope and encouragement and knowing you, you will do all she has adviced 101%
As for the food and Charlie putting on weight could you not change his food slowly over to low calorie type?
Will be interested to hear how things progress for you and Charlie, good luck but I'm sure you won't need it your love for your boy will see you through.

Day 2 - Most of yesterday was good but in the evening Charlie started to become more nervous again and this got progressively worse as the night continued.  He was wary of my lodger and jumping at every sound again.  He also had a couple of skitzy incidents one when I accidently brushed my hand along his side when we were playing.  He jumped right up in the air and flew to the other side of the room, hair on end.  One of the symptoms of hyperesthesia is over sensitivity to touch but it is upsetting nevertheless.  I did manage a little pet when he came on the computer desk and rubbed his hand against me.  No playing overnight and still nervy this morning.  Managed to sneak a couple of meals into his automatic feeder yesterday - found the best time to do it is when he is busy munching on another bowl of food.  Will carry on as directed but have to be in and out a couple of times today.  Received typed up notes from Sarah with a couple of small additions.  She has said not to expect an overnight change and that I have to be completely consistent. :)

Yes, it could be a long haul, it may be two steps forward, one back but just persevere and I'm sure it will be worth it.  I would think it a good idea to keep a diary of his progress.

Sorry to hear you had this little setback but its early days yet so dont be to disheartened :( im sure that over time he will get into a routine and begin to respond more positivly and you have to try not  to get upset ,as i said to Kate with Swampy im sure they pick up on our feelings  and if your stressed (which im sure you must be ) he will lock onto this.As your keeping a diary of progress you will be able to look back at it and see a pattern emerge, and will be able to work with this pattern so you both begin to settle and have more positive times.

Day 3 - Charlie continued to  be very nervy and jumpy.  However overnight he played by himself and brought a furry toy upstairs.  This morning he woke me at 7am for a boxing match, having eaten the food I secreted for a 4am little feed in his automatic feeder.  He is kicking his Yakult bottles round.  Problem with Charlie is no sooner have you hidden the food in new places than he has found it, pounced on it, knocked it about or rattled it out.  His latest trick is to bash his automatic feeder round the kitchen.  I can't wait until the double one is delivered.  I have found a good way of doing his food in secret is to wait until he is eating and then zoom round hiding stuff.

We have had a couple of gentle plays but it isn't satisfying him enough so he has been zooming round a little.  Hyperesthesia is horrible - he isn't constantly skitzed or rippling, it just comes over him.

Anyway I am still doing all the things I am supposed to be doing but it is hard not being able to pet him so much.  He has been in and out the garden today.  WIndow frosting was an excellent idea, he certainly is not constantly going back and forth looking for enemy cats.

It's still early days and some of the progress has been good.  Charlie has to have a calm life and it is difficult to achieve with all the everyday noises of living etc.  Plus I am a sod for dropping things.  I have got him a cat calming CD called Pet Calm.  Don't think it is working though.

Will probably not update everyday as it is too much for you all but just every few days and if anything significant happens.  I am keeping a second diary now.  The first one was for the Behaviourist and this one is his treatment programme diary.  One thing I have noticed is he is quite often worse in the mornings and evenings.

Thanks for ready :)

Day 5 (early morning).  I cannot believe the difference in Charlie so quicky, although I am aware there will probably be set backs and bad days.  He is so much calmer and happier.  He is not taking any interest in the dining room window (he used to be up and down from there anxiously looking for enemies most of his waking hours).  He has shifted his attention to the front lounge window but it is very rare we see a cat there, so he is enjoying watching the birds and passers by without the angst. He is loving his foraging for biscuits but is too clever for me and quite often finds them as soon as I have secreted them.  He is showing absolutely no interest in the field. He came and slept on the bed at 2.30 am until we got up this morning which he has NEVER done before.  He would climb on the bed about 5.30 but has never really settled there for long.  Plus he is tolerating petting and purring his head off.  He has had a couple of small skitzy whizzing round episodes but of such a short duration.  I am so worried about his weight though.  I do not want to cut back on his wet food as he gets lots of fluids with it but his regime means he is getting more biscuits (he used to have maybe 10 a day) plus less strenuous excercise so any tips on how to contain his weight would be appreciated..  Now he has biscuits in dishes, egg boxes and Yakult bottles a couple of times a day.  He is a quick learner and bashes the Yakult bottle round the room.  Good progess so far, fingers crossed it continues.  He is at the vet on Wed to check on his anal gland abscess which seems to have gone and I will have to discuss the weight issues with her then.  Thanks for your ear x

Spoke too soon!  He is off again, skitzing round the place like a wild man, digging for England in his litter tray (he only does this when he is on one) and generally being hyperesthesic. Am trying to ignore as much as possible but it's hard!

Well that sounds very promising even if you did get a bit of a hic cup from Charlie but you said yourself these were expected.
About the weight why not buy the low diet dried food from the vets? I know it is more expensive but it should help a bit with the weight issue.
Your doing a grand job Chrissie, even in this short space of time you can already see results.

Day 9 - after some ups and downs, good times and bad, today has been wonderful so far.  Charlie had a couple of skitzy episodes this morning but both were of very short duration (whereas previously they used to last quite a while until he exhausted himself).  He has played nicely with me and by himself.  I have cut back his biscuit rations and he has taken it like a man!  Just a while earlier he wanted food.  Usually he would rampage round the kitchen knocking everything off the worktops and generally cause mayhem, today he just bashed his automatic feeder a couple of times and then went and settled on the back of the armchair near the window and dozed patiently until it opened.  Today has been like having the old Charlie back.  Fingers crossed he carries on responding well, although I would be foolish to think there wont be ups and downs.  Touch wood no repeat of the weeing incident. :)

Day 13.  There is no doubt that Charlie has been calmer, in fact I got a bit worried because he was so quiet!  A nice balance would be good.  He still has some skitzy periods but they are of very short duration and nowhere like as often.  He has adapted to the automatic feeding regime though I have, today, increased the time between them from four to 6 hours.  He has had good fun in the snow today and is now snoozing quietly on the dining table.  He has been quite affectionate too although will only tolerate so much before he does a gentle bite.  His headshaking increased over the weekend but seems to have slowed down a little now.  He is using his Yakult bottle, treat ball and egg box but only having 3 biscuits in each twice a day.  Not had a poo for a couple of days but did do two massive ones after the Dentabits incident.  On the whole I think I can say there is improvement.  There is, however, no improvement whatsoever in the reaction to everyday noise.  Still another 10 or so to go before it is reviewed by Sarah.  Thanks for reading  :)

Poor boy must just be able top hear them now and maybe never has before.

I know that Misa jumps at many things too and gets really worried at little noises, which in his case is his bad pasy I think.

It is supposedly all part of the hyperesthesia when they become more reactive to sounds and sensations.  He has certainly only been like this since his ear wash though but the vet wont have it!

That does sound like the cleaning out of his ears has made him more sensitive to noise.

there are some things the vet knows far more about than you and some that you DEFINITELY know more about than the vet! Try not to get infuriated! How often has Charlie had his inner ear/s checked or does he not allow that? If sound is 'too loud' for him (and cats can hear - when they want to - for such long distances) it may well settle down over time.

Day 15 - not much to report really.  Things have def been calmer and quieter with Charlie.  He has had no skitzy episodes at all for the last two days.  He was running around today but it was playful and more controlled.  His fur is hardly ever rippling and he is quite affectionate.  Even offered me his tummy today which sadly I had to decline.  He is not hassling too much for food and is sometimes even refusing his few biscuits.  His weight has stabilised but still needs to go down a little.  The only thing that hasn't improved at all is the reactivity to noise.  We are now two weeks into the three week programme.

Day 17.  I am almost afraid to post!  Charlie is wonderful.  He is calm, funny, loving, mischievous and playful.  He has not had a proper skitzy episode for quite a few days and seems to be much much calmer.  Today for the first time we had a long play session involving lots of running around but he never got hyper.  He has been headbutting me all day for kisses and loves and up to his usual mischievousness.  I am not going to say he is cured because I don't think he is (I don't even know if he can be completely) but my goodness he is very nearly back to the old Charlie boy.  Please send positive vibes that it continues.  The only thing that hasn't changed is the reactveness to sounds. Thanks for reading.

WOW Chrissie!  How interesting is that?  The whole story is fascinating.  I remember you saying months ago that you believed Charlie to be suffering from hyperesthesia but that your vet wouldn't countenance it.

I'm so so pleased that you seem at last to be making some headway with young Charlie.  I almost feel that I don't want to say too much at this juncture in case it all goes pear-shaped again but am sending all positive vibes your way for Charlie's continued improvement.

What a difference this vet made.....Would you mind if I pm'd you for her details?  I often have customers who need a good behaviourist and it would be good to put them in touch with someone who is genuine and can be recommended.

I'm sure you will continue to have good days and bad days but provided there are more good than bad, then the progress will be steady and continuous until at last you reach that longed for plateau of calm.  I bet that abscess of his bum was causing him some pain too 'cos he might have been suffering from a build-up of anal gland gunge for some time without you knowing it.  Mostly it secretes invisibly by itself but sometimes the glands becomes blocked don't they?  We all know this happens in dogs (and God, doesn't it stink!!!) but cats don't seem to be affected by the condition as much but my guess is that he must have been incubating it for some time.

Anyway Chrissie, a very interesting read...and I shall continue to follow Charlie's progress.

Lots of love to ya both   :Luv2:

Thanks all for good wishes.  Had a bit of a bad day (sod's law eh?) but nothing too major.  A big skitz this morning but only short, came in through the cat flap like a bat out of hell and his feet almost didn't touch the floor as he belted upstairs - I am guessing he might have seen a passing cat as he went straight to the spare bedroom window.  Has been a bit MORE reactive to noise as is usual when he has a skitzy day but I am not worrying too much about it.  Tomorrow is another day on the long road and he still managed to bash the hell out of his auto feeders when they didn't open to command!

Tan if you would like I can email you his diaries (they are daily ones).  Let me know and I will gladly send them.

Thanks again for reading :)

I am happy that he is doing well most of the time, I think the setback has upset me because it is not nice to see him so jumpy and anxous and unable to relax.  I don't know why he skitzed again either, it may have been a cat or might just have had a hyperesthesic attack.  Anyway we come to the end of our three week trial programme on Wed so will see what Sarah suggests.  I am certain that his jumpiness started after his ear wash and although the vet says there is absolutely nothing wrong with his ears I am not so sure that it is not related.  It's a chicken and egg situation, which comes first the ears of the skitzing? I am not despondent and am really  not stressed, just concerned that we keep these attacks to the minimum we can but it's hard to manage without being sure of what triggers them

I'm not actually seeing Sarah on Wed. she only does one home visit and then you have 12 months email or phone support.  I will send her his 3rd week diary and take it from there.  Had a skitz this morning think it was high spirits  but went a bit too far - still reactive to the strangest noises.  For instance he stood next to me last night whilst I was piercing the film on something going in the microwave, made really loud noises and he never flinched but if a leaf falls off a tree (not literally of course) but any small noise, even ones he has heard every day, he freezes!

Sorry I thought you was seeing her face to face.

Make sure you don't miss anything out.  She sounds very good so I think she will be very thorough.  Does Charlie jump even when the noise is happening in front of his eyes?  I was thinking if you pick up a cup, put him in front of you and then lift the cup up exactly as you would do so that he can see what is making the noise.

Day 21 - the final day of the three week trial programme.
I can honestly say there have been big improvements but we still have the odd skitzy days.  Charlie is still extremely reactive to sound and cannot seem to relax some days, as if he is worried.  I think I found the trigger for the last big skitz on Saturday.  My neighbour and her two housecats were in her garden.  She said Charlie started to scratch at the fence and her two cats ran indoors.  Hence him flying through the cat flap and upstairs to see if they had gone round the front.  I don't know what I can do about his reaction to other cats though as we have a high concentration in a relatively small area.
He has had a nice play today and has been busy being nosy.  Currently sat on his cat tree in the garden prior to his usual afternoon nap.  I wish I could keep him calm all the time as it isn't much fun for him nor me, watching him.
Anyway will see the response from Sarah.  Thanks for reading :)

Still waiting to hear back from sarah but I think I have realised something.  It is me that Charlie is anxious around.  He was fine yesterday with my neighbour Nigel and my daughter.  He is fine with my other two neighbours and fine with my lodger unless he gets too loud but yesterday in the kitchen he actually flinched when I put my hand near him to move his bowl.  I think he may pick up on my anxiety which I am unable to do anything about as although I can pretend not to be anxious the reality is that most of the time I am.  I feel so awful that this formerly happy cat is now a nervous wreck around me!

it may sound daft, but how listening to classical music or something soothing for *yourself*... so you can help you help him?

the other option is to watch daytime TV (record if necessary) and you will go into a zombie like stupor...

Indy's Mamma.  I have classical music on all the time (for Charlie!).  My problem with anxiety stems back to a bad accident I had in 1996.  After that I started having panic attacks.  I had some counselling (which was useless as the woman was a dragon) and although I do not now have full blown panic attacks I do suffer from anxiety a lot of the time.  My GP put me on beta blockers at one point but I kept going dizzy.  I have tried almost everything over the 13 years but nothing beats the relentless feeling of being anxious! :(

sorry that you feel like this but if nothing else it proves that Charlie can be better - maybe knowing this can help you in a funny sort of way - I hope this doesn't sound stupid I don't really have any experience of panic attacks

Day 25.  Still not heard back from Sarah.  Charlie has mostly been ok yesterday was a really good day, he was happy and playful and spent ages running round with his Curlie purry and we played with his sparkly attachment for his Da Bird.  I have put him on RC ultra light (after discussing it with the vet nurse) mixed with a little Bozita so some of the weight should def come off him.  My neighbour Pat came in, she hasn't been in since 29th Dec as she had a bad fall, and Charlie was so excited to see her. He charged in from the garden and jumped all round her headbutting her.  That was nice to see.  After the realisation that he is anxious round me I am doing my level best to be positive etc.  Hard when you have anxiety probs but will keep trying.  He is still very reactive to small sounds though and has been shaking his paws a little - anyone have any experience of why this could be?  Thanks for reading:)

does he shake a paw like he has pins and needles? Misha does that whenever he wants something and is plotting how to get it

Hopefully by keeping calm for Charlie he will help you with the anxiety problems you have had too

yay for his progress too  ;D

Quickly reading through what I've missed in the last few days - busy looking after my mum.

Flinchinig at you - are you wearing different perfume or hand cream or something that he doesn't like?

Thius is so harde for you, you deserve a medal, or at least a Blue Peter Badge

Hope Sarah can give you some more suggestions and glad he was fine yesterday.

Do you mean shaking his paws as if he were trying to get something off them?  When does he do it?  Blip does this from time to time and I think it's because she's a bit stiff - I started a thread about it, I'll try and find it...

He does it randomly!  He shouldn't be having circulatory or arthritic probs at his age!  Behaviourally I read that cats do it because they don't like something and can sometimes shake each paw in turn, I have seen him do it with three,.  He doesn't like me :(

You are doing so well with Charlie, I honestly don't think there are many who would have done all you have done and are doing for Charlie. In a short time you have achieved so much.

Day 27.  Sarah has now reviewed Charlie's diaries and thinks he is making progress as he is having some good days.  She says his arousal levels are still too high and his behaviour is typical of that.  We are to continue on the programme for another four weeks or so and then review again.  She is considering meds but does not want to use them yet as it will take a few weeks for his arousal levels to reduce.  She has also suggested a CD for introducing him gradually to noises (it is usually used for puppies but is effective for cats) so her practice are sending one out to me.

He has been skitzy since Saturday on and off but no major charging round ones,.  He hasn't been very nice to me though, coming on the computer desk for a pet and then biting me if I pet him.

Ah well at least there is some positive stuff in it so will continue and feedback to you every few days.  Thanks for reading and for your support. :)

When my daughter Anne's cat, Lucky, was still a kitten, and Anne was about 3, they used to have mad romps and sometimes he would nip her in self defence.  I caught them once, after Lucky had squeaked and asked what was going on.  "He bitted my ear so I bit his" she said.......  Not something I recommend but curiously, it worked!

Mr T nips sometimes if I stroke him too much in one place.  It happens when Im falling asleep and on a sort of "automatic pilot" He nips me to make me move my hand to somewhere else.

Day 37.  Things have been really bad.  After the big shock with the police incident (they broke into a neighbour's house and the noise was horrific) Charlie has slipped right back to his worst.  He has skitzed every day since Sunday and is very agitated.  I haven't started the noise desensitisation because he is so worked up I don't want to make him worse.  I have just continued to do everything Sarah has told me but he is not showing any signs of calming down.  It was a horrendous noise and sounded louder than a pneumatic drill and as if it was in the house.  It has truly upset him. :(

Keep to your usual routine and im sure eventually he will realise that he is still safe and will calm down once again, but whatever you do try not to let your anxiety show as he will pick up on it ,im sending lots of positive vibes for you both

Day 41.  things have been mostly very bad indeed although we did have the magic sit on lap moment.  We are now going to go down the medication road.  Charlie has had diarrhoea today which we think is stress related.  He is not a happy cat at all and his edginess has increased.  He has skitzed most days (not today yet touch wood) and is generally anxious and highly aroused.  He is trying to comfort eat too.  Anyway has had two lots of diarrhoea, one this morning and one about half an hour ago.  If still having it tomorrow Irene the vet is giving me the probiotic paste.  I worry because one of the symptoms of the coronavirus is diarrhoea!!!!!  I worry anyway!  We are still continuing with his programme but he is not really coming back round after the incident with the police.  Also think there is a cat bothering him but haven't actually seen it.l

thanks for reading :)

(I'm sure you will have tested his thyroid as that can cause over anxiety, eating and diarrhoea?)

Stop worrying and you may find Lacto B that is a fine powder I am led to believe and will vanish in food, a better option and less stressful for Charlie.

I have just ordered some on vet uk for franta who has a tummy problem after all his abs.

I dont know what the behaviourist thinks but I think its too soon to go down the meds route after the police incident.

One thing is for certain you must stop worrying cos this is making him worse....he needs and relies on you and is a very sensitive boy  so everytime you get all worried and stuff so does he.

Also you have not been doing your normal routine of being on the puta and stuff cos of your neck and I know Misa worries terribly if I do that and he keeps trying to take me into the study to be on the puta, so this may also be affecting Charlie.

Its all the innocent little changes that you dont notice but Charlie will

I hope Charlie does start to calm down have you tried Zylkene - works wonders on some of our Hyper ferals when we first bring them in and its a natural product

On the coronavirus thing don't panic yet - we have Beijing who is a carrier and she is a bit loose in the stool department but our vets have advised us to leave well alone she is a happy soul and we don't change her routine and she is off to be speyed in May when she will be 1.

Also the coronavirus can also look like what Gem was tested for - can't remeber offhand but it shows the same symptoms and needs to be ruled out first - I will check gems thread tomorrow and let you know what the other thing is

Above all try and remain calm as he will pick upany worries you have - easier said than done but he has had the lap moment and that has to be a bonus gold star so  to you and Charlie from all here

Thanks Gill Liz and Janey.  I don't want him to have meds if we can avoid it but Sarah agrees.  On and off Charlie has been stressed since last August time and it is not good for him physically or emotionally to be so anxious all the time.  We are using the meds to stabilise him and to give him a break from feeling anxious all the time and to level out his anxiety.  He has been on Zylkene for months and it really isn't strong enough for him.  I can't help worrying, I wish I didn't but I am an anxious person and the slightest thing sends me off.  I know it is not good for Charlie but there is little I can do about it I am afraid.  I can pretend not to be anxious and stress but I still give off the vibes.

Charlie is only 2 and should be having a carefree fun filled life instead of which he is miserable, anxious and generally on edge most of the time.  He does not cope well with some of the neighbourhood cats and these things, like the police incident, the cats, the wind, thunder, fireworks I have absolutely no control over.  All I can do is make it as easy for him as possible and that is why the decision has been made to use medication

Toxoplasmosis initially shows the same symptoms as Corona but is cureable on antibiotics over a long period so if you are going to test then do this one to

Charlie sounds as if he is at odds with this modern world and it can be so difficult to remain calm for them - soeaking from experience here on that one I am Mrs paranoid if so much as one of ours sneezes or looks off for no apparent reason so know how hard it can be

Have you tried things like having indoor pots of Catnip, and cat grass - we have both and dry the nip from the outside and have parties on a rug and they love it

Just keep being positive and above all try and have chill time for you both

Day 44.  Spoke to Sarah as the meds have arrived and she wanted to talk me through doseage, rationale and anything I might want to ask.  We will start Charlie on the meds any day now (he is a little constipated so we want to get his poo back to normal as a potential side effect is constipation).  They should start to work in about 3 weeks.  He is on a minimal dose which can be increased if necessary   However if these drugs do not work then realistically Sarah says, I have to think about rehoming him to somewhere where there is less concentration of cats.  All the things that are stressing Charlie are completely outside my control and so it is not really possible for me to reduce his stress.  I need you all to send us tons of positive vibes that the meds do the trick but the other thing I have to consider is that although the meds may help, they are not something he will stay on for the rest of his life and even if they do help now, when he is weaned off them what if he goes back to being stressed again?  A horrible time coming up I think, please keep Charlie in your thoughts :(

I have been speaking to a friend who fosters for CP and she had 2 very traumatised cats in fact so much so that folks wanted to PTS but Patricia said no and took them home to her pens and she had fur tested and started using essential oil therapy on them - 9 months on both have been rehomed to a lovely couple and they are like different cats

i think it involves fur being tested or something similar and on awkward and very stressed cats my old branch of CP are now testing and taking advice from the alternative therapist and it has worked wonders on traumatised and scarey ferals

We used Margicol tablets for the healthfood shop on our 3 from Patricia and all are well settled and have fitted in might be worth a try

if you want toknow more about the therapy thing I can get some details for you

Lets hope that the meds kick in and soon both of you can have some more quality knee time

I keep crying at the thought.  I am trying not to think about it but yesterday I was really upset and pictured myself packing all his stuff up and him leaving.  I don't want it to happen but it is a possibility unless I can get something to work as all the stressors are totally outside my control so I can't do anything to ease them for him.  I am really anxious and depressed about the whole thing.  I have tried every possible thing I can think of, have read up on stress in cats, have every book published I think, have discussed him with three behaviourists and the vet.  There is nothing more I can do if the meds don't work and I wont know that for three weeks.  Whatever happens I have to do the best I can with Charlie's interests at heart, even I break my own heart in the process.  :(

Chrissie dont think about what might happen in 3 weeks, concentrate on today, and take one day at a time, you have to remain calm for Charlie, otherwise nothing will work because he will pick up on your stress. Try the meds and alt.therapy have you also considered Acupuncture, that can also relieve stress altho i dont know where you would go for this unless your vet can recommend someone, just a thought but maybe another avenue to explore

No tears and no broken hearts just yet please - in fact not at all. Positive vibes in your house from now on please, or Charlie's Army will be after you.

It's just a pity it will take a long time for the meds to start acting, but you never know, you might see a difference pretty soon.

This is the link that I have been given - its actually an alternative therapy centre about 5 mins from where we used to live and they have been very helpful with CP cats, not sure on costs but it may be worth contacting them - Patricia swears by them and she specialises in the fostering of some of the most traumatised cats I have seen and although its usually a long haul she really has had positive results

Thanks for all your good wishes, support and ideas.  I will keep him on the treatment programme of Sarah's for now and give it the best chance of working I can.  I will keep details of the alternative therapies/homeopathic remedies though.  Sarah's programme (pre meds) was starting to show results until we had the awful incident with the police.  Then quickly on the heels of that came Sophie (next door's cat) bullying him plus a new unneutered tom stray in the area (Nigel is trying to tempt him in and will have him neutered and adopt him he says), plus bad storms, wind, rain, hail and my noisy lodger's return haven't really helped us much.  Now I may have to have some remedial work done on the house but am trying to postpone it for as long as possible to give him a chance.

On a brighter note he has been a good boy since yesterday afternoon.  No skitzing, some sweet headbutts and face snuggles for his mum but still noise reactive.  Will keep you posted and please, please keep the positive vibes up :)

 Mary.  Have been reluctant to post for support as am offering so little back at the moment and feel really guilty.  However my pains are def connected to my computer use!  Anyway enough of me.

Day 57.  One week on the meds.  There have been some improvements and calmer times but, as ever, things conspire against us to have a quiet and calm period with no disruptions.  Next door's cat Sophie has been out more and trying to bully Charlie so this has got him worked up twice.  It takes a day or so for it to reach its peak and then a day or so to calm down.  Anyway after discussion with Sophie's owner we have agreed that I can put up some rubber cat deterrent spikes (not really what I would want to do but have tired other methods of deterring her and none of them worked).  They are due to go up this afternoon so no doubt the hammering etc will further upset Charlie.  It is a lovely day here, as was yesterday, so we have spent some time playing hunting and bubbles in the garden.  But as usual, fate conspires and the bin men arrive and start banging and crashing which made it difficult for Charlie to focus.  But we had a great day yesterday, calm, happy, playful and sociable with a touch of the old Charlie mischievousness.  Sarah said it would take about 3 weeks for the meds to kick in completely so hopefully fingers crossed etc.  Anyway we just plod on!  Thanks for reading and all your lovely support which is very much needed and appreciated. :)

NEVER be reluctant - we are all here for each other and you know it.

My hands (more my right one with mouse clicking toomuch) are sometimes painful but a friend of mine just recently had an op on one of her arms cos she was so bad with the computer.  It did the trick and now she is waitig for her other one to be done.

Poor Charlie - there's time for the meds to kick in yet.  Glad your neighbour is being supportive.  Put a few pics of savsage dogs facing Sophie's way and then she wont come near Charlie  :naughty: :Luv2:

My Smudge used to hate the dustbin van - she would run behind the settee until they had gone.

Best of luck AND.... keep us informed

Day 62- 13 days on med.  I think I have discovered something.  I think I am guilty of something.  I hope I have rectified it for good!

Charlie had not been having brilliant days.  I was reading up on hyperesthesia, it's causes etc etc (I have done this before but not picked up on this particular issue).  Anyway, there it was, in black and white, CIGARETTE SMOKE can cause hyperesthesia.  It was like a light switch going in my head,  Charlie hates cigarettes. He avoids them like the plague.  So here was I, a truly heavy smoker since I gave up work, polluting his environment with toxins and smells and chemicals.  So, although I have not quite reached the stage where I can give up, I have made a big change and I now only smoke outdoors - at the front of the house mostly, so as not to encroach on his garden.  It has cut my consumption down by three quarters too which can't be bad, as I have to actually think before I light up.

The difference in him, in just three days, is 99%. Today I have my old Charlie boy back, the naughty Charlie who climbs on the mantlepiece and knocks everything off, the playful Charlie running round the garden with his ping pong balls.  His head shaking has stopped, he hasn't skitzed, his skin barely ripples (save for when he is taking his meds), he is much more sociable and affectionate and although he is still slightly sound reactive, it is nothing like as bad as previously.

Now, it could be a co-incidence and the meds kicking in, but somehow I think the cig smoke has a lot to do with it.  It is early days and I am hoping I have finally cracked it.  Please please keep on sending your positive thoughts to this mummy who is feeling so guilty and horrible.
Cheers for reading :)

It would make sense.  I do hope that withdrawal of cigarette smoke from his environment helps him turn the corner.   I've often thought that cats in general must be very sensitive to fag smoke.

As a former smoker myself, I'll spare you the lecture on using this opportunity to give up, shall I?

Fantastic news. Looks like you are saving each others lives   :Luv2: :Luv2:

Even smoking outside you will still have the smell on you so it might be good to wear some old clothes when you go out for a cig.  When I smoked I alwys had candles lit in the room - don't have to be perfumed, just cheap white candles and leave them lit for about 10 mins after - i never smelt anything in the house.

Good luck and love to Charlie. :Luv2:

Wow!!  What a brilliant breakthrough/discovery :)

You have also made me realise something very interesting.....

Mr T's original owners are heavy smokers - 4 smokers in the house full time and visitors .....

I wonder if Mr T had withdrawal symptoms when he moved in here full time as he always heads straight for a smoker friend of mine when she lights up.  He rubs his head all over her ciggy packet, too. .....

I used to smoke - not a lot but I know how hard it is to give up.  I still get the odd day when I really want one  :-[

   For you and Charlie

I also think you noticing this is good for other readers whose cat may suffer with hyperesthesia.  Different illness but I once saw a woman on TV who was highlighting the problem of ciggies to cats and how her poor cat had suffered badly with it's chest/breathing in the end it was fatal (she lived in a small flat smoking heavily) it was awful to hear what it did to her cat  :(

Day 68 - 19 days on meds.  Charlie has had a very mixed week.  We have had several days of high winds (we have it really bad when it is windy due to the proximity of the huge field bordered by tall, closely planted trees - the wind absolutely whistles round) which always make him skittish.  However, on the whole he hasn't done too badly.  He has had, I think, three major skitzing episodes and the rest of the time he has been mad eyed and nervy.  My neighbour, Nigel, came round the other day and remarked how "chilled out" Charlie seemed.  Charlie let Nigel stroke him all down his back and his fur didn't ripple once.  This morning I woke up to find Charlie snuggled right beside me.  He hasn't been on the bed for ages and when he did come on it was always towards the bottom.  Today he was right up close and we had a petting session during which he purred profusely.  He hasn't purred for a while either.  I was a bit disappointed as he seemed to have slipped back after the wonderful few days we had when I first started smoking outdoors.  However that did tie in with a period of relative calm.  The cat deterrent spikes seem to have deterred Sophie, at least from sitting and eyeballing Charlie, though she has been spied teetering along them!  We think we have located the owner of the new unneutered stray tom and are planning to visit them and suggest neutering.  I should be able to get a free neuter voucher from CP if they have problems with the finances of it.

All in all, not too bad a period.  He will have been on the meds 3 weeks on Monday.  Sarah has a weekly diary and has had since she first came into the picture with Charlie and I am awaiting her feedback on his current progress.  He hasn't had a poo since Wed though but has had some lactulose so hopefully that will come soon. Constipation is a possible side effect of his meds.

Thank you for reading and caring about Charlie and me, I am having problems with my arms etc and due to see a bone specialist on 9th April.  Please keep your pos vibes coming to my cheeky chappy.

Love and

Day 72 three weeks and 2 days on meds.  Well I am happy to report that Charlie is doing great!  He has only had one tiny skitz (just a split second) when he discovered I had re-seeded a tiny patch of grass.  He promptly dug and peed in it!  He is far less reactive to sound, I would almost go so far as to say his reaction is normal.  His fur hardly ever ripples and he is much more chilled out.  We even managed a Da Bird game which was a little wild but he didn't go OTT tonight.  He is less crazy for food (still likes it though) and things don't seem to be bothering him so much.  He is also purring again! Fingers crossed for him that this continues.  Tomorrow is forecast sunny and 60 degrees F here in Manchester so I expect we will spend a fair bit of time in the garden.  Sophie is deterred!  Unfortunately the stray doesn't belong to the person we thought it did but haven't seen him around too much.  Things are looking good for my boy:)  Thanks for reading and please keep the pos vibes coming.

Thanks,  my back and arms still hurt if I am on the computer.  I am seeing the bone consultant a week tomorrow though to be honest I don't think it will serve any purpose as it is def connected with computer use.  Think it is probably RSI although someone I know mentioned they got similar symptoms to mine (I have other things going on, I am an old crock!) and it related to her thyroid so am going to speak to my GP about this.

Day 81 4 weeks and 4 days on meds.

It has not been a good week.  Charlie has been really off and miserable and has been very jumpy and nervous.  I have felt quite despondent and wondered if this is as good as it gets with him.  Anyway I am feeling much better as Sarah (behaviourist) phoned me for a chat this morning.  She thinks, from Charlie's diaries, that he is making good progress.  She said with hyperesthesia he is permanently at the top level of stress and the slightest thing can tip him over.  Anyway she feels he has made steps in the right direction as he is having some good days, is not skitzing every day and even when he does they are of short duration.

She said the meds are only just starting to take effect and it will be another four or so weeks before we can expect to see the full benefit.  She said I must not tiptoe round him and worry that things I do will set him off.  She pointed out that that is bad for me and I will feel stressed and anxious (tell me about it) which is not good for my health and will transmit to Charlie.

So I am actually feeling better about it now.  She said he will be up and down and it will take time.

I saw the bone specialist yesterday who says I def have something going on in my left arm (either from my neck or elbow).  He thinks it could either be a trapped nerve or something similar to carpal tunnel syndrome.  Also there is some problem in my right shoulder (what an old wreck I am becoming) so he is referring me to two different hospitals.  One to have diagnostics done on the nerves in my left arm and the other for a scan on my neck.  In the meantime I have to just take painkillers. He did say, however, that he doesn't think it is anything sinister.

Those of you who read "From the Cats Mouth" will have read about Charlie's escapade with the Easter egg box.  For those who haven't read it, he climbed on the dresser and poked his head in an Easter egg box and got it stuck.  He then danced backwards across the dresser and fell off still with the box attached.  The same day I accidently locked him in the garden in the dark!

Anyway thanks for reading and for all your support, much, much appreciated:)

It sounds like Charlie is making good progress overall.  It may seem like 2 steps forward and one step back (or even one step forward then two back at times!) but that is inevitable given the nature of his condition.  I really do think he is improving and that he is doing much better overall, despite the odd setback.  Sarah is right about you not worrying - not good for you or for Charlie   Try to relax (easier said than done I know) and accept that Charlie is doing great

Good luck with the hospital appts - I'm glad the bone specialist doesn't think it is anything sinister

I think Charlie has done great so far MM, a few setbacks are bound to happen and what the behaviourist says makes good sense to me.  I would just be yourself aside from training prog. whatever.   Hope you sort your painful problems out and get to what is causing it

You really do have my sympathy with your neck and shoulder problems - my OH is waiting for a diagnosis himself.  He had an accident at the end of July - fell off the back of a lorry ( yes - we laugh about it now, too) and at first we thought the main injury was a badly fractured right wrist and head injuries.  Its turned out to be rather more than just that - Drs and hospital are now talking nerve problems and ligament troubles .  He has no proper grip in his right hand, cant raise the arm properly above waist level and has a lot of neck pain.  His left arm is now causing problems as he has over used it ....

Still, as he says, we have our cats as a distraction  :Luv2:

Poor old Charlie and his Easter egg experience - he has some splendid adventures, doent he?

   to you and him  :)

Day 93 5 and a half weeks on meds.

Charlie has been quite up and down but I am pleased to report he is having more good than bad days.  In a week he had three good days, two so so days and two very bad days.  He is quite calm at the moment and enjoying spending lots of time snoozing on his cat tree in the garden or chasing the hose sprinkler in the evenings.  He can have a short game of Da Bird/Mouse without it turning into a skitz at the moment.  He is more tolerant of cats around the area and has his affectionate moments.

Of course having written this down I have the dread of jinxing it all as this has happened so often.

I am pleased with his progress and hoping things can only get better.  He is having another cat tree built in the garden any day and it will have a platform joining it to his other one.  Also he is having shelf outside under the window.  his grasses are starting to grow back and I am leaving the grass longer.

He has had fun chasing bugs and is a lot less demanding on the food front

Thanks for listening and caring about us:)

Thank you all for your kind posts.  To answer the question about me!  I am not doing too good really.  I have been feeling lightheaded most of the time and have had two occasions when I felt really dizzy, clammy and my legs felt like lead.  Saw my gp today who said he thinks the "turns" were caused by nicotine rushes as they both occurred during my first cigarette of the day.  He is convinced the lightheadedness is caused by my constant anxiety.  I have seen the bone consultant who says there is def a weakness in my left arm/hand and a possible problem with my right shoulder (old crock am I).  Anyway he has referred me for an MRI scan on my neck and nerve diagnostics on my left arm.  I haver the MRI appointment for 18th May but not heard about the other one yet.

On a Charlie note he is doing just fine although he did have a little skitz earlier.  He has coped this week with four firemen and the police in the house!  Nothing sinister, the fire brigade are doing a campaign on safety in the home and fitted me two new smoke alarms and the police came to check the firebrigade had been.

Thanks again to you all for your caring concern and endless support:)

Day 110 (I think) 8 weeks and a bit on meds.  Well things have been really bad the last couple of weeks.  Charlie has reverted to his bad days almost without exception.  I am conscious that part of it is down to my anxiety levels and that try as I might not to let Charlie be aware of them, he is.  We have had several large skitzes, fur rippling, head shaking, over grooming, noise sensitivity, the lot all back again.  I felt really desperate and have asked Sarah (Behaviourist) to review his meds to see if the dose needs increasing slightly.

However, I have to say that today I am feeling much better and so is Charlie.  I have changed his feeds to every couple of hours, just a couple of mouthfuls and have had to cut down his biscuits as his weight gain is far too much.  No wonder though with so little exercise compared to previously.

We have a new game, hunt the bits of cooked chicken in the garden which we do every couple of evenings and he adores it.

HOpefully, next time, I will have better news to report but ever onwards and upwards.

Thank you all again for caring so much about us both, Charlie sends a hi five :)

Day 124 ten weeks on meds.  Charlie has been awful.  He has been anxious, wary of me, avoiding me like I have the plague, disinterested in anything around him, noise reactive and skitzy.  So Sarah and I discussed it and she has increased his meds from 0.4ml daily to 0.5ml daily for one week, .06ml daily for one week and then up to .07 ml.  She said I should notice fast improvement.  He had his first upped dose on Tues and he was remarkable and wonderful and lovely old Charlie on Wed.  Then on Thu morning when I got up he had reverted back to how he was before and has, so far, stayed that way although he has been slightly more sociable and curious today and has been chasing a butterfly whilst I have been tidying the garden.  It is very depressing and upsetting to see him so miserable and unhappy.  He will sit just hunched up with wide eyes and ears pricking constantly.

I took him to the vet on THu cos he looked a bit bloated and with him hunching up all the time I thought he might be uncomfortable or worse.  Our usual vet Irene was off so we had a locum lady called Kim.  She spent about five minutes really feeling round his tummy etc and pronounced him FAT.  SO he has to have r/d which I have to start to introduce into his food over the next month.  She has written down how much of each as he has to have some biccies in his puzzle feeder as part of his treatment plan.

So things not good really.  Of course my anxiety levels are through the roof and I know this is probably part of the reason he doesn't feel comfortable around me, my adrenaline is constantly pumping.  I have taken a beta blocker today which I haven't done for a long long time as they can make me dizzy but it is not good for either of us to constantly be surrounded by anxious feelings.

I have had my MRI scan on Monday and will have my nerve diagnostics next Wed.  Wish the news on the Charlie front was happier.  I despair we will ever get this sorted out sometimes.  I did ask Sarah if she was confident we could sort him and she said she is.

Hope everyone here is well.
Love xxxxx  thanks for caring about us

Oh dear Chrissie,im so sorry to hear Charlie has gone back 2 steps but this is probably down to your stress and anxiety, you are obviously worried about him and also your forthcoming hospital appointments but you really have to take control of your stress, the more stressed you become the more Charlie will pick up on it,i know it a vicious circle, and its easy for me to say but you have to try and stay calm even when hes having a skitz, i wish i could come up with an instant miracle for you both but all i can do is send some calming vibes for you and Charlie and hope that Sarah is right and that the increased meds help calm him and then you will not feel so anxious so harmony will once again reign and you will have the old Charlie back

Oh I'm so sorry Chrissie.  You and Charlie need to be on a desert island and just chill

Unfortunately the reality is you both have to wait and let meds and tests run your life.  I so wish I had a magic wand to sort you both out.  Try amd keep your chin up and hopefully the weather is picking up which puts us all in a better mood.
