Just seen and now signed. I had no idea of the tortuous effect that this had. Thanks for opening up my eyes.

It's already illegal to release myxi into the wild here!  The problem is now it's just indiginous in the rabbit population - it's spread primarily by mozzies so those lucky buns who are genetically immune or miraculously survive, become carriers so when the mozzies and fleas start again after winter, the disease just picks up again.  And like all these things it mutates over time.  This year has been exceptionally bad because of the wet weather encouraging the breeding of a huge number of biting insects, not because anyone has released it again.

Everyone please get your bunny vaccinated every 6 months!

was to the vets today with Misty, got speaking to a woman with her Dwarf Rabbit that is House trained
uses litter tray etc, I'd asked her why She was in to see the vet's??

"He's in for his vaccination against Myxamatosis" :(
I'd told her about the petition I'd signed on the web, and she confirmed what i read in the paper and told
me that there were quite a few cases of Rabbit's contracting the disease in the area  :(

DO NOT BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER ANIMALS DIE

I believe I am not interested to know whether Vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesn't. To know that the results are profitable to the race would not remove my hostility to it.  Mark Twain

Signed, I have seen my fair share of what this man made disease does to these poor animal's
and I dont like to admit it, but when I was younger used to ease their suffering quickly :-[
and They DO make easy prey for Foxes !!!
going by memory I believe it was created to control the number's of rabbit's in australia ??
can't remember if it was introduced here also or came across the water accidentaly ??

Strange that this has been posted cause I think it was last week in local paper, people were
being warned about protecting their pet's (vaccination) against myxamatosis because there
was a growing number of Pet Rabbit's in the area contracting the disease  :( >:(

I am totally gob smacked by this....Im sure Paul O'Grady would have something to say on his show about this as I think he used to own rabbit's which died due to this terrible disease.... :(

Petition Against releasing myxo virus into the wild
« Reply #1 on: November 04, 2007, 20:35:15 PM »
We are petitioning the government to try and STOP them from releasing the myxo virus into the wild rabbit population to cull them, there HAS to be a more humane way of doing it.

For heaven sake, being ripped to pieces by a fox would be a far better way to go, than to have to die from myxomatosis.

Not only that, but with them releasing the virus into the wild every time they wish to cull the rabbit population (every time the Farmers Association have a moan about their numbers) there is an increased risk of our pet rabbits contracting the disease.

If a cat comes into contact with a wild rabbit that has it, it only has to visit the garden and get remotely near to our pet rabbits, and there you go, one infection or more.

Then there's the millions of mosquitos that are still flying around at this time of year because the seasons are to pot, they carry the virus, as do all other parasites.

I doubt the government will turn round and say, yes ok we will go for a more expensive but humane way of culling the wild rabbit population, but we can always hope.

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Myxomatosis/

Please pass this on and spread the word, only by a mass petition will the government even listen.

Thank you for your time.
In ancient times cats were worshiped as gods; they have not forgotten this.
