Title: Riley's heart (was Lucas & Riley being neutered tomorrow)
Post by: Tiggy's Mum on August 12, 2007, 16:36:30 PM: Lucas and Riley and getting snipped and chipped tomorrow, I've not taken the day off work as I think I will probably be better off at work as otherwise I will have too much time on my hands to worry about them. I know it's a simple routine op but I can't help worrying about something going wrong, as the date has drawn closer everytime I think about it I get a sinking feeling in my stomach :scared:

I've explained to the boys (yes, :Crazy: I know) what will happen and I'm also going to ask if they can share a cage pre-op so hopefully they won't be as scared if they have each other. Riley is going to have an X-ray while he is under re his panting, when he had his ultrasound and failed ECG the vet said that she didn't think there was anything wrong with him but that we may aswell take the opportunity to do an X-ray while he is under anaesthetic as that would be the only other test outstanding.

I asked the receptionist about when to last feed them, she said they could have their tea at the normal time (7pm) the night before and to take water away at around 6:30am. They are going in at 8am so does this sound about right?

Hmmn, now that's not a bad idea Christine ;) I'm sure I have got some little party hats somewhere that might fit them, will have to hunt them out and maybe take a little pic :evillaugh:

I used to feed supper about 9pm and when Jaffa had his dental and Mosi his neutering I was ok to feed them that as normal but nothing after that. I suppose it depends on what time they're doing the op though - my vets doesn't open til 9am and it would probably be later in the day after morning surgery when the op was actually carried out.

Mosi sends sympathetic hugs to Lucas and Riley but tells them not to worry. He was back to his normal self as soon as he got home but he says it's a great opportunity to demand something special for tea and lots of extra cuddles.

I always feed mine up til my bedtime - I think Lynn agreed this is OK and the old recommendations are a bit obsolete. Maybe its me but I wpouldn't lie to deny them food for so long - especially growing young boys ;D

helen i know the boys will be absolutely fine and gives them an excuse to get loads of extra cuddles, kisses, treats, dairylea blobs, etc :rofl:

The boys will be great.....last male i had done didnt even have stitches, he was great and i picked him up at 2pm that day ;D

I don't blame you going to work Helen,when my cuddles got done 2 weeks ago I was a wreck and I took the whole week off,I shouldn't of taken the day of the op off because I was worried sick at home and theres only so much cleaning you can do :rofl: plus daytime tv is anything but good : :rofl:

It all depends what time they will be operated on and I was always allowed to feed Kocka right up to about midnight, dont think I was ever told to take her water away but cant remember.

I cleaned the entire house in about 2 hours when we had Smoke spayed, we had the time off to make sure she recovered with no problems.

Think she slept on top of me for a week!

Post by: Tiggy's Mum on August 13, 2007, 10:38:54 AM: Had some news but it's not all good... Had a missed call about 20 minutes ago which I missed as my phone is on silent, I rang them back 5 mins ago and spoke to the vet.

Both boys ops went OK but she X-rayed Riley's chest and says that one side of his heart looks a bit larger than it should be. She said that sometimes the meds used for the anaesthetic can cause enlargement so they are going to wait until he has woken up and do another ultrasound. One of the vets is a heart specialist so he is going to look at him later aswell :(

Post by: Tiggy's Mum on August 13, 2007, 11:00:42 AM: I think she said she did an ultrasound aswell and that showed the same, she said they are going to do another ultrasound or maybe ECG (can't remember which) when the meds are out of his system. He still does the panting thing after hard play but the other day he was getting all excited and did it just laying down. I wasn't overly worried as the vet had sort of put my mind at rest last time but now I'm getting worried.

Too late, I googled enlarged heart + cats and it came back to cardiomyopathy, I am praying that's not what he has as the prognosis is not good - 5 years... He's only a baby, that would be so unfair :'(

I feel physically sick but there's no way I can go home as I'm on my own in the office today. I finish at 4 so am going straight down to the vets even though he won't be ready to come home til about 5:30, the specialist apparently starts at 4 so I'm hoping they will let me hold him for the tests as I know he's going to be feeling very frightened :(

Post by: Tiggy's Mum on August 13, 2007, 19:24:06 PM: They're both home now but Riley has to go back tomorrow morning, he wasn't playing the game when it came to the second conscious ultrasound so I have to take him back again tomorrow as they didn't want to give him any more sedative today after the GA. The specialist will be there again and they may try for an ECG aswell.

I asked the vet how the ultrasound a month or so ago had shown nothing yet now the heart was enlarged and she basically said it's kind of like a regular GP looking at the scan so the specialist tomorrow will hopefully be able to tell me more. I asked what kind of things it might indicate and she said they wanted to rule out something like a hole in the heart. In the back of my mind I keep thinking (hoping) that there is nothing wrong with him - like you say he is so big, active and healthy. It's only the panting thing that is out of the ordinary, after his first ultrasound a month or so ago she asked me to look at his mucous membranes during the panting sessions, his tongue is always bright red so I thought that was a good sign rather than going pale?

Gill is right. Find out what exactly is happening before you imagine all the possible outcomes.

He jumped straight up on the kitchen worksurface when we got in, normally I say down in a stern voice pointing to the floor before I go and pluck him down but tonight I went over and kissed his head :) I filled his water bowl up and he drank loads and then spilt the rest on the floor so what did I do - fill it up again for him and now he is skidding all obver the kitchen floor :evillaugh: I just can't believe that there is a ything wrong with him :(

They have both had a can of AD and am just doing some chicken breast for them too, the nurse said not to feed them too much in case they are sick but they have kept the AD fine for 3 hours so I gave in and did them some chicken. Poor Riley won't be allowed brekkie tomorrow either, he went without food for 23 hours and now he has to miss breakfast too :(

No news as yet... The heart specialist was on the night shift last night so won't be working until later but I still had to take him in for 8am. When I put him in the basket he was OK but I went to feed Lukey (in a different room) and Lukey started yowling for his brekkie as he normally does, that set Riley off yowling - I felt so sorry for him :( I uploaded his panting video to photobucket and gave the link to the nurse so that the vet can see it later, she was very impressed ;D

Have just heard back from the vets ;D He has done another ultrasound and says that it's "highly unlikely that anything is wrong with his heart". There is no hole, no leaky valves, no narrow parts ;D He has studied the partial ECG results from last time and said they are fine too, he said that he hasn't done another ECG as today's ultrasound showed the heart as normal.

He said there is a new blood test out which tests for heart problems so has sent it away for analysis, the results should be back next week - he really doesn't think anything is wrong but said that if the blood tests do come back showing something then he would need to be seen by a specialist heart centre but again thinks it highly unlikely. The other blood test for all the other organ functions was done inhouse and came back completely normal aswell.

I asked why the X-ray done yesterday might have showed his heart as enlarged and he said that he has taken all the measurements and that the heart is just within normal size, Riley has a particularly small chest which is why the heart may have looked enlarged in comparison with the chest size.

So............. :wow: My baby boy is going to be OK, he said for me to come and pick him up at 6:30 but I bartered with him and will be getting him at 6 :) God knows how much it's going to cost, yesterday was £237 (£137 of that was for neuter & chip x2 though) - he is insured but I have to pay out first and claim back from the ins co - who cares anyway, the main thing is that my little prince is going to be OK :)

I warmed up some Hills AD especially for him and gave Lukey the normal stuff, he pushed Lukey out the way and began devouring the normal stuff while Lukey looked a bit dismayed at what was left for him :evillaugh: I am starting to think that the vets had an ulterior motive for all these tests... they wanted his fur! He has the shaved patch on his chest from yesterday, an even bigger patch on the otherside of his chest today, all his neck fur is missing and also some on his leg :shify: The only thing I am missing is £470.97 but hopefully should get that reimbursed from M&S.

The nurse who I spoke to tonight said he was like a different cat today, yesterday she described him as a 'nervous wreck' and she said today he was doing the head nuzzling thing and being a nosey boy :)

:thanks: to everyone for all your positive thoughts and good wishes, I was so worried about him and it really helped knowing that everyone was thinking of him :)

Eaten 3 bowls of food :)

He is currently dripping wet after having a water fight with himself :evillaugh:

Here he is showing off his new bald patch, am thinking that whoever shaved him has aspirations to be a hairdresser as it looks like they went a bit OTT :evillaugh:

I already call him my little hoody Sue! He is such a thug, I'll always remember when they were little and having a playfight, Riley had got the better of Lukey and as he got off him and was walking away he nonchalantly kicked him in the head with his front paw (like an underhand tennis swing) just like a yob might kick their beaten victim whilst laying prone on the floor >:( The other day my sister was round and we were in the kitchen, I heard the noise of the venetian blinds being rustled, without looking over I shouted out 'Riley, down' - she said to me how did you know it was him you didn't even look over I replied that I din't need to - it's always him being naughty :evillaugh:

I thought he might be a bit moody with me for abandoning him for two days sold at the nasty vets but he has actually been even more loving, so trusting :)
