Post by: Stuart on April 07, 2012, 11:20:44 AM
MY Mum's cat Korky has been unwell these past couple of weeks as in being sick daily
I am currently offshore so only found out yesterday that My Mum took Him to the vet and that he has
an enlarged bowel  :( they have taken blood samples and are going to xray Him just to find out what is happening

I hope he can come through this, He is only 7 and is my Mum's World  :(

Thanks guys
Just got home from offshore yesterday, My sister was round so I have a bit more info
although I was still knackered from coming offa nightshift, some of the information
didn't sink in properly  :tired:

A bit of good news tho, Korky has , well....sister described it as the same as Irritable bowl syndrome
she also mentioned something about nerves in the bowel being dead or something ??
but it is something that is treatable  ;D
Blood result's still not back yet, and the scan / xray has still to be done as My folks have kinda moved
up north to the back of beyond, and the machine should be arriving at the clinic in the next few days
Mum has also been told that the scan will be free of charge because it is quite an interesting case
apparently  and there will be student vets there to watch the procedure
Mum will be happy about this as she is quite Grippit when it concerns money  :evillaugh:

will keep you all posted when i have more news  ;)

Ok, the scan came back and there are no growths in the Bowel, I didn't realise
it was quite a life threatening ailment  :(
The new vet got his History and picked up on the drastic weight lose from months
ago, some of you may remember that I was getting on at my mother to get Korky
checked out at the time because of this, just for her to say " but He hasn't changed "
( I think the main part of Hesitation on my mums side was mainly to do with what
happened with us and Olivia )
 :'(
The new vet thinks it is around that time that the IBS started, He also said if it hadn't
been caught now, Korky might have only lasted another 5 months  :'(
So, He has had steroid injections and has to get two pills a day, the pills as far as I
can gather will be for the rest of his Life, I have had a quick look on the net to try and
find out more about IBS, and I'm kinda relieved that with Meds, they can still live out
their full expected lifespan

I will keep you all posted,

Please keep the vibes coming tho  :scared:

Oh good luck.
Not sure if this is much help but I had that for years and it was finally cured with accupuncture. There are vets who practice this so if you have one locally it might be worth having a chat with them.
Title: Re: Get well vibes needed for Korky
Post by: Stuart on May 01, 2012, 08:55:10 AM
thx folks  :shy:

don't know about acupuncture, knowing my mum she's a skeptic with things like that

The vet they are now seeing has said that the Bowel is still inflamed, even with the med's
eventually Korky will stop eating, and when that time comes they will have to let go  :'(

Basically the vet has said that it was caught too late  :'(
Such a shame, He is one in a million, So loving, usually when I see my Mum, Korky liked nothing
more than Jumping on Me forcing his way up to my chest so I would have to slouch in the seat
So he could Lie there Purring his head off dribbling and playing the Piano  :Luv:
He would stay there like that till I moved him or it was time to go

I do so Hope when the time comes, it will be later rather than sooner  :'(

Here's hoping it is a lot lot later.

Some other "human" tips for this which might be able to help is Actimel or anything similar and any safe anti-inflammatory.  There is a drink called Cherry Active which has an anti-inflammtory affect on joints which I mention as I often used to give my Chelsea a little tiny bit (only what she could lick off my finger).  Don't know if it works on tums though.

Good luck.

Hi Sheila, I saw Korky last time I was Home  :Luv: He is still the same personality wise, But has lost a Horrendous amount of weight  :(
When asking my Mum about Him, It is plain to see that she is not coping well  :'(
I think she is just trying to put it all to the back of her mind

When I asked her, she said He had been sick 3 times the day before, but so far has managed to keep everything down ( that day)
He is also on steroids so that will be making him Hungry too, but she was also saying that the Vet want's her to limit the amount of food he
is getting because that will irritate his bowl

It's really sad, He is such a lovely softy  :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:

going without food can also cause fatal liver disease so yes, he needs to see a vet asap.     Will be thinking of the poor boy x

Just to recap for anyone who is new to this case

"The vet they are now seeing has said that the Bowel is still inflamed, even with the med's
eventually Korky will stop eating, and when that time comes they will have to let go  :'(

Basically the vet has said that it was caught too late"

That's why I want to know if you're home, to talk to your Mum and help Korky out of his pain

So sorry, Stuart, this sucks.

Thanks folks, I am home just now, but mum is 150 miles away
as they are in a remotish part of scotland, getting a vet is not that simple  :(
I thought Korky had an appointment to see the vet on Tuesday ( Tomorrow )
but i am just off the phone with my mum and he hasn't  :(
She did say he had a good day later on yesterday and that there was a stool in his litter tray
so far today he has just sniffed at his breakfast, prednisolone is the medication he is on atm

I'll keep you all updated, Thanks again for your support  :shy:

Thinking of your Mum and Korky, Stuart.

Difficult enough at the best of times, but as you say, living in a remote location doesn't make veterinary care very easy.....

Korky has not had a good day  :(

is it a certain part of Korky's  bowel that is inflamed or all of it? I work for a Bowel Doctor (very interesting :evillaugh:) in a hospital and if people have a similar problem they operate and remove the part of the bowel that is inflamed and then join the ends back together again....... If the vet is saying its too late, I would maybe try a 2nd opinion, or get your vet to either refer or you could contact a veterinary hospital, who research into this type of problem? someone like this?

http://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/vet/smallanimalhospital/

this is interesting, has your mum tried him on just organic food? interesting that there is a gluten free cat food:

Thanks Guys

Hi Heather, I do not know the whole story, but I do know that My Mum is really impressed with this vet
Months ago Korky started losing weight, http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php/topic,37672.msg668024.html#msg668024

Over  year ago  :(

Heather, I honestly think it is too late  :'(
I txt'd my mum this morning, Korky never ate anything yesterday, and wouldn't take his pill
This morning she tried him with raw fish, He just sniffed it and went back to the bedroom  :(
She says She knows what has to be done, but can't bring herself to do it. I am now away to
txt her back, to let her know that She will be doing what's Best for Korky as hard as it is
It must be done if it is time

This is breaking my heart too, Korky is really one of a kind, I've never seen a Cat so Loving :'(

Oh so sad. It does sound like it really is his time, and your Mum realises this too. She needs to find the strength from somewhere to do what's right for Korky now.

Can the vet come out to your Mum to assess Korky and help him on his way if need be, Stuart? It may make the decision and the event easier for your Mum.

It might take you calling the vet on her behalf, and perhaps arranging payment over the phone?

At least that way your Mum doesn't have to travel, make the decision by herself, arrange payment etc. when she's so upset.

Once again, I'm so sorry it has come to this, it's breaking my heart to think how you must be feeling right now.

Ahh poor Korky. If it was me, I wouldnt give up yet, especially as he is still very  young. They can tube feed cats that refuse to eat to get nourishment into  them to build them back up before considering further treatment? :( But its your mums cat and she knows him best :(

Stuart thinking about Korky and sending  for your Mum

Our vets are very good if we know the end is coming we take the cat in and then leave by the back door and pay whenever only once have we been asked to pay by a new receptionist and the partner nearly had a fit they know where we live and that everything is always paid its the last thing on our minds when we make that heartbraking decision
Title: Re: Get well vibes needed for Korky
Post by: Gill (sneakiefeline) on June 10, 2012, 01:43:29 AM
So very sorry Stuart that Korky is not improving.

Hoping that your Mum can have a chat with the vet and ask him what he would do if Korky was his cat.  Its very hard when a cat wont eat and if this carries on then Korky has made the decision.

I know they can tube feed but after seeing this done on Napoleon I would never go there with another cat..............I think!  I guess one cant rule anything out when not in the situation.

Sending all my thoughts for Korky and your Mum

Korkys Mum
But never got into the forum thing
I haven't spoken to Her yet as I am back offshore, no words could give her comfort, I just know she will not be taking this well,
and that every morning when she wakes up, she will be heartbroken all over again  :'(
I have also changed the date as it was my mum in-law that told me Korky was sent to the bridge on Saturday, I spoke to Carol tonight
and she told me it was 10:30am sunday morning, and that He did have a tumor in His intestines and that there was nothing more that
