I took the call re Ben last week a ginger puss of senior age. He was adopted by a elderly lady a few wks back after owner died. However, he has suffered from ear problems and she was concerned as to his well being, but could not afford to get him to a vet. We suggested PDSA, who did see him but they discovered he had a ear problem that looked like a tumour.. The bill for the operation was too expensive for the lady, and the they were not able to do the operation for some time due to paperwork..!!!!
Anyhow fearing this may be more then the usual he came into our care today, as the lady signed him over to us. He went to our vets who have kept him in and they are doing his surgery tomorrow to see if we can help him.. It may be too large now to remove but if it isnt that then our vets will do the best they can and see if we can get him better as he is obviously in some discomfort (blood and puss coming out his ear every so often)..
So huge, big and long enduring vibes for Ben tomorrow, as he is a lovely friendly fellow and deserves a second chance... I will be thinking about him tomorrow!

Hope it goes well. Is he being operated on at AH? - Alice made 100% recovery from a her tumour and didn't seem so suffer at all during recovery.

it's a shame about the PDSA - I understand they have limited resources, but I bet more of their donations come from old ladies than any other group who uses their services
and us old ladies need our pets :(
so I am crossing fingers big time that there is a happy end to this story for Ben and her

Good luck for Ben tomorrow, hope he recovers and its gone for good.
Bungly had one in her ear before i got her and that one was removed fine- unfortunately 5 years later on she has one on her liver now :'(

From our welfare officer!!! Positive vibes seems to of worked!
Ben had his surgery today and they managed to remove the mass and clear the ear out. It looks like polyps but to be sure it has been sent of. The results will take about 10 days I hopefully will pick him up tomorrow..
Although we would love for the lday to take Ben back, it was more her ongoing finances that were the issue...so it may be that if Ben needs oingoing treatment she want be able to afford it.. However, lets wait and see!

Just thought i would update you all.Ben is still at the vets as he had a very nasty reaction to the anthetic (sorry no idea how to spell that).... He has been on a drip and doing well now so hopefully will come out of the vets and into foster care tomorrow... Apparently he is a dear soul, taking all this in his stride...So with some luck and some results back to see how we stand he should not take too long to find a home...
From experience the polyps do seem to occur and obv this reaction to the operation is something to bare in mind as he want be able to have operations on a regulary basic if he becomes so unwell afterwards. However, i am sure there are other types of drugs that can be used that may not make him so ill..
Will update when i know more!

Poor little fella, polyps do have a tendency to grow back so that's something to be wary of but hopefully he'll be fine :hug:

Poor little guy but he is in the best place and hope that he will not need ant more ops. There are many different drugs that can be used. so hopefully it was just that one :hug: :hug:

My Snugglepuss has polyps and has had them for almost 3 yrs now, she has Depramedrone and Covenia injections evry 4/5 months to keep infection down and apart from a constant discharge which i wash out every day she is fine

Sorry i missed this yeasterday.. We are still waiting for the results to come through, but i am told he ia loving boy. If it is polys then i expect we might have to support his ongoing care as they do have a habit of returning...But we MAY have a possible home lined up for him if all is well.. He is around 6ish but could be 9ish!

Bens results came back with good news as nothing nasty!! He will need check ups every 6 months or so to make sure they dont grow back up he is now off for his jabs and chip and up for rehoming this week.. Sorry i never seem to get a photo. The fosterer he is with isnt very good with IT !

Can't he go back to his owner as he isn't going to need continuing expensive treatment ?

CP dont provide vet care for peoples pets, thats the role of the pdsa who failed this cat :(

I know they don't MM

The very fact that Ben came into our care was money actually. He will need onging vet checksup to keep on top of this and if it does occur then meds to control. So if we did get back to the person who originally owned him and she scrapped money together to do this what guarantees would we have she would be diligent about it. Our poor Lucy was not seen by the vet earlier enough to save her condition getting far worse. Ben was in some discomfort before he was fixed up. I realise it may seem abit heartless, but if the lady didnt have the money to just get him seen in the first place and left it weeks before contacting us we could end up at square one.
I was also told by the lady that went to see Ben to get him into our care (our in cat co ordinator) that the owner has gone to Spain for the winter so perhaps another reason she no longer wanted to take care of him.
This lovely puss cat deserves more i reckon, i hope you all agree. Left without treatment he would of lost his hearing and more
We are not heartless just realistic, if you are not able to take care of a puss cat and care for its vet needs then you should not have one!
When we do rehome him it will be to a person that can afford any future treatment for him.

Sorry its such a poor photo of him!
Ben is a pale ginger, neutered male cat. Aged between 7 and 10 years old Ben came into the care of the CP as a cat taken on by a lady who had known his previous elderly owner who had died. We took him in urgently as it became apparent that he had some going on with his ears that the owner was not able to afford to treat. His ears were badly infected and this required urgent surgery. Ben came through the surgery and needed dental work including the removal of some teeth and a further operation to remove a benign growth. Ben is now putting on weight and his general condition is steadily improving. The original problem with Ben's ear will require monitoring with 6months check ups..|The branch is willing to help with costs for any future problems with his ears, however initial signs are good that he will not have any more issues with his ears!
Ben's hearing is not good - he may be deaf so any future home will need to allow for this - he will struggle to hear cars approaching. Although he seems not to worry to go outside, we feel that he would benefit from outside access in a secure garden or away from busy roads.
Ben has an unusual tail which adds to his charm. Ben is very affectionate and gentle, he loves to sit on laps and being fussed. He loves company and being groomed and would enjoy a home where he will have plenty of human company - possibly a home with adults or older children would be best as he is nervous of being handled around his ears. Ben is a good eater and is enjoying at least three meals a day (plus snacks) while he gains weight. He can use a litter tray and a cat flap and enjoys a comfortable bed to curl up in if no lap is available. Ben is nervous when travelling in a cat basket to the vets and any future home will need to be prepared for accidents caused by stress while travelling - (hardly surprising when you take into account the number visits he has had recently to the vets). After all that Ben has been through in the last few months he is now looking for a new home where he will make an excellent companion. Ben is outgoing and lets you know how happy he is by purring loudly. Ben is ready to spend long winter evenings curled up on a lap or sofa next to someone he isn't likely to tear around playing with toys and climbing the curtains. Ben would possibly enjoy being the only cat in the home or sharing a home with another cat of a similar laid back, gentle nature (Ben is not an aggressive, domineering type so could be intimidated).
Ben is neutered, fully vac and chipped!
Home checks will be required, even if rehoming outside our area! So help from your local CP branch will be required to do this

After a lovely article we managed to get in the local press last week! Ben should "fingers crossed" be off to his new stately home today. In deepest Bekesbourne (very rural) with 2 very well behanved children, and 3 other rescue cats. To a lady and her family that own a five bedroom house with a orchard at the back and a nice little barn with chickens.. Ben I reckon will be one lucky puss cat..
In the last 2 wks we have managed to rehome 13 cats (iincluding 2 ferals). Most ot them to adult homes where there are no kids around, but not always. and it would seem all have settled in fine... All well loved and all much better in homes then in our pens and foster homes.
We have benefited from other rescues just closing down and stopped rehoming. Only on Monday we rehomed 3 legged Binx who is adored already.. The lady didnt want another blk cat but once she saw him it never occured to her not to take him! (he was blk). Just shows you what happens when things turn out like that!

It's lovely there - we want to move to somewhere in that area at a later date. Very semi-rural and olde-worlde :) - Also where the wildlife park is :)
