So sorry to hear this, I must admit I feared the worst from how you described him as my childhood cat Benji had something similar and he was gone within a week  :( Such a horrible decision to have to make for Bobby, but the only one under the circumstances  :(

RIP Bobby, safe and sound at the Bridge by now xx

The Greatest Gift

I always knew this time would come,
From the very instant our eyes first met.
How I loved you then! How I love you now!
I made a promise then, and I will keep that promise now...
You will not suffer from a pain that will not heal;
You will not know the loss of a life remembered, now gone.

It is for me alone to make this decision,
The price for the bright joy and pure laughter
You brought me during the time we shared.
I am the only one who can decide when it is time.
When my hope dies, and my fear rides high,
Just when I need you most, I must let you go.

It is for you alone to tell me when you are ready
For without your guidance, I will not know
When to lay my grief, my guilt, my anger
My sorrow and my selfish heart aside
And give you this last gift, this greatest gift.
Your eyes will speak to mine, and I will know.

The pain of this moment is excruciating.
Tears stream down my face in a river of sorrow.
And my heart drowns in a pool of grief.
For you have spoken and I have listened,
And unlike other decisions I have made
This one brings no relief...no comfort...no peace.

For if there´s one thing you´ve taught me,
If there´s only one thing I´ve learned...
Unconditional love has a condition after all,
I must be willing to let you go, when you speak to me
I must be willing to help you go, if you cannot go alone.
And I must accept my pain so you can be free of yours.

Go easily now, go quickly now,
Do not linger here, it is time for you to leave.
Go find your strength, go find your youth.
Go find the ones who've gone before you.
You are free to leave me now, free to let your spirit soar
Rest easy now, your pain will soon be gone.

I pray I will find comfort in my memories...
In the dark and lonely days ahead.
I cannot say I will not miss you, I cannot say I will not cry.
For only my tears can heal my broken heart.
But, I promise you this; as long as I live,
You will live, alive in my mind, forever in my heart.

So I give you this last gift, all I have left to give,
And this will be my greatest gift...sending you away.
It is the measure of my unconditional love...
For only the greatest love can say,
"Good-bye, go find the bridge, we'll meet again,
Loving you has been the greatest gift of all."

Forever and Always... Until Rainbow bridge....

Just said goodbye to him  :'(

X rays showed his lungs were really bad and his trachea had almost collapsed, poor baby.

The only thing to do was let him go peacefully while he was sedated, I was with him, of course.

Can't quite believe it  :'(

Thanks for your kind thoughts xxx

I do hope the xray goes Ok and sending loads of good vibes for Bobby

Its terrible how they are OK one minute and then suddenly so ill but dont think you have any choice but to xray and the sedation will be quite light.

Thinking of you both

He's at the vets now - been very quiet overnight and didn't want breakfast this morning - didn't even come downstairs.
Vet said options were to sedate and x ray with risk of losing him under anaesthetic to see what it is and if we can treat, or put him to sleep. How did it come to this so quickly and unexpectedly?
Decided to x ray.......I'm going back very soon to be with him while he's sedated so I'm there if anything does go wrong or if we find something so bad I have to let him go. Must admit I'm wondering if it's the right thing to do to x ray him but I don't feel like I can just give up on him without knowing if there's something we can do, equally don't want to prolong anything for him, he's clearly very poorly.
All positive vibes gratefully received - will update later when I have more news, I so hope it will be good news I'm struggling with facing the possibility of losing him  :'(

Thank you

I really do hope it's just a blip Sheila-Rose but because the antibiotics haven't had any effect it is a worry...his third eyelids aren't showing, but he's lying here wheezing away, he's not been this bad til now. He doesn't seem to be able to get comfortable, feel so sorry for him  :(

Problem is my normal vet is away at the minute. The locum is very nice and I don't doubt her ability, but if my usual vet was there I know I could ring her and talk to her in the morning and see if they would x ray or if they would just give more meds - in which case she would probably let me collect and inject him myself rather than stress him out with the journey. It is hard to know what to do for the best.

He came to live with me 6 years ago in November - he was about a year old then, been found as a stray and a lovely couple took him in, had him neutered and tested and although they loved him, they had another cat and didn't want to risk her with him being FIV. I found him either on the original cat chat or on Purrs when it was first born! He's such a babe, really chilled out and loves being with the dogs (so much so he gets in their beds with them, which the ginger dog is never impressed with!)

He's never really been ill before and although I've had quite a few oldie FIVs with upper respiratory problems I've never had one with a bad chest like this, feel like I don't know what I'm dealing with this time so it's unsettling. Also with him only being relatively young and this being out of the blue really it's just very worrying.

Guess it serves me right for counting my blessings last week that everyone was well and happy :(

Oh poor Bobby. I hope it's just a blip and he bounces back soon.  :crossed:

I'm keeping you and Bobby in my thoughts this week-end. What's his history, Schmew?

Please try not to be scared, you need to be strong and happy for him, or he'll pick up on your fear. Easier said than done I know, but use Purss to vent your feelings so he gets the best of you right now

Poor Bobby cat is poorly :(

My fluffy ginger Bobby is quite ill :(

Noticed Monday night he was breathing heavily - up until then I've really not noticed anything, he's been fine, eating fine etc. Vets Tuesday, who said she thought his chest didn't sound right, thought chest infection and gave him long acting antibiotic jab, high temperature......took him back today, still high temp and breathing like darth vader but up until now he's not seemed any worse - he got stressed while having temp taken and breathing has seemed worse since then :( He's come home and has been really quiet, tummy moving lots when breathing, only just had something to eat cos I took it upstairs to him (although he did give himself a bit of a clean afterwards. She gave him some loxicom while we were there.

She wants him in on Tuesday for x-rays (damn bank holidays) to see if it's a tumour, or his heart :( or if those are ok, will take sample from lungs to test exactly what the infection is to treat it more directly. She said she is really worried about him :(

He's only 7 and has been so healthy til now - if he's no brighter I can take him in tomorrow or Monday but I don't know if they would x ray him any sooner? Thing is I feel like tonight's vet trip has made him worse - before we went he was in the kitchen begging for food but I didn't want to feed him while he was going in the car. He's just joined us now downstairs, and has jumped up to sit on my knee so think that's a bit positive. Guess I will have to see what he's like in the morning but I am frightened :(
