Title: how far do you cats wander
Post by: naboocat on August 09, 2009, 20:55:05 PM
Just wondering if people know how far their cats wander from their homes?

Our cat has been missing but has just been found quite a long way from home. He's never been gone this long before so don't think he could find his way home  :(
Usually he just stays around the road we live on & never goes far.

I'm worried he'll wander off again & get lost. He was found a stray so he may be prone to getting himself lost.
He has a collar with his phone number on.

Should I keep him as an indoor cat? This is really difficult to do as he always dashes out the door whenever it's opened. Whenever he's been kept indoors he's been desperate to get outside so clearly loves to be outside.

The furthest my cat has been is 20ft up a tree just beyond the end of our back garden.... cue me laughing lots at Hubby trying to climb up and fetch said cat back!

Seriously though, is your cat chipped?

I have an indoor cat so can't say how far he goes. What I will say is I don't think he should be an indoor cat if he's used to going out and enjoys it (mines never been out so he isn't missing out on anything). Do you have a garden you can cat proof?

Yes he's micro chipped.

The paper disc with our phone number fell off his collar so we're going to get him an engraved one instead.

Sounds like he needs some time indoors just to re-establish where his home is!  ;)

2 miles is a bit far to wander!  :shify:

oooh that's quite a way .... I wonder if he hitched a lift.  I would try and keep him indoors for as long as possible so he reconnects with home.  Hopefully after this little adventure he will stick closer to base camp.

He set off last night so was gone for 24 hours. He was seen afew times along the way so we think he's walked there through the woods.
We think he's followed one of the neighbours walking their dogs up to the woods then got lost. We'll speak to all the neighbours & ask them to let us know if he follows them out of our road.

we kept him indoors for 3 days this week while we got him a collar so wondering if he got cabin fever & went for the a big long walk to make up for being indoors so long.

We'll try to keep him in for as long as possible

My Harry makes up for "time lost" while he's been kept indoors, I really have no clue where he goes or how far. Then again there are fields around us and he does like to hunt  :shify:

I think it's been established that a full tom can cover an area of 4 square miles. Neutered cats will roam a lot less. Having said that, I had a female spayed cat that would walk 1.5 miles every day to meet me at the train station when I came home from work.  :shy:
