Title: Lucan may be ill
Post by: lollycat on September 27, 2012, 18:34:42 PM
:( just back from the vets, the good news is that he has put a pound on since we got him! The other news is they think he may have a problem with his kidneys. His drinking is worrying them but they said to see how he goes over the next week and then if he's still drinking as much they'll do bloods. He was such a state in there, shaking and he looked just pitiful. They said today that by looking at his teeth he's not as young as we thought, they can't be sure but maybe even 10. They did say that the weight gain is encouraging though and he is already neutered Yay!!

Thanks, i'm hopeful that he'll be fine. He came back and i let him out of the carrier and he just lay down and didn't move, it really took it out of him so I hope we don't have to be regular visitors. I came back and boiled him some chicken so he's happy now x

aww bless him
with some more weight on and getting on the right track he may not feel so weak and exhausted

That and the stress of just getting to the vets will have worn him out - hopefully the chicken will make up for it  :)

Lucan looks so much better than he did and hopefully his kidneys will show a sign of improvement as he puts on more weight and benefits from your loving care

He looks like he is doing so well and sending lots of good vibes.

Thanks everyone, Gill i'm so glad you said he looks a little better. it's difficult when you see them all the time to tell the difference
I have a good feeling about him, he's not drinking anywhere near as much so that's a great sign.

Thanks, i just looked at the story of the stray you put the link up to, how great that he's so well now.
I hope that ends up being the case for Lucan. he's started doing this crying in the night a real mournful sound, when i'm home he follows me EVERYWHERE! I try to get up quietly if he's sleeping but he always notices and jumps down and follows. His drinking remains the same and so does the urine output. I'm using catsan and have to completely change the whole lot every day. And there's usually urine that hasn't been soaked up
He's vomited twice since we got him and apart from that seems ok. The longer the drinking goes on the more i fear for him. I think it may be back to the vets this week.

Maybe the vet can put him on Fortekur if its kidney problems .Winston is on it for his heart murmur and Smartie was too (RIP, it was cancer that took him ) .
They both did well on it and Winston is 14 and a half now.
Good luck , you are doing great for him ,he is very lucky

Thanks bunglycat. What other treatment do they have if he has got kidney problems?

Not sure to be honest , but Fortekur has been good for my cats .
They are £34 for two months worth.

You can try renal food. I had some earlier on in the year but ended up giving it to my local rescue. Bad timing as you would have been welcome to it.
Try Zooplus - they had some biscuits Chelse loved. HappyCat or something from Germany.
The vet will guide you though.

Thanks Louise. I'll look out for that. Do they actually need medication or is it just dietary?
Title: Re: Lucan may be ill
Post by: LouiseJ on October 02, 2012, 21:44:18 PM
I didn't have long enough with Chelsea after she was diagnosed to really know but the vet put her on prescription renal food and I think that may have been enough for her.
She didn't particularly like the food I got from the vets which is why I tried Zooplus as there are reviews on there. That and VetUK were the cheapest ones I could find at the time.
I got a lot of the information I had from here:

Oh dear not sure how I managed to miss this thread! Sorry to hear Lucan isn't doing very well. He is looking heaps better in his pic as Gill rightly points out.

I hope everything works out with his kidney. Fingers cross its just all this extra eating and replenishing himself after a hellish seven months.

Sending hugs your way

Only tests will show whether he has problems and to what level and then you take it from there. Make sure you get a copy of the tests results
Title: Re: Lucan may be ill
Post by: Rosella moggy on October 02, 2012, 22:45:38 PM
If testing kidneys, I suggest you also ask vet to test for other potential probs e.g. thyroid, diabetes as increased thirst is a sign of a number of possible disorders.

I hope all is OK but you would be well advised to test all in one go rather than one at a time

Also, if kidney prob, ask vet about benazacare rather than fortekor as it's cheaper and I've heard good stuff about renalzin to lower phospates.
Title: Re: Lucan may be ill
Post by: lollycat on October 03, 2012, 08:43:52 AM
Thanks all, i'll definitely do as suggested. He has a big appetite, excessive thirst which obviously results in excessive wee wee. He's active a lot more now but he does cry a lot mainly after eating and through the night. The vet said with kidney disease they don't gain weight and he is doing, I weighed him yesterday and he's well over 6 pounds now so that's over a pound and half in 2 1/2 weeks.
I was hoping it was just the result of him having worms and being starved that made him drink so much but the longer it goes on the less likely that's looking.
Back to the vet on Monday.

Putting on weight is an excellent sign and would I think make HyperT and Diabetes unlikely too?

Maybe he just cries overnight as he is used to having overnight freedom?

Trying to work out what 6 pounds is in kgs lol.....just got up and failed!

I think as he is putting on weight thats gotta be good................could he be very dehydrated from his outside stay?

Hi..hes fabulous, dont think ive seen such a "hey look at me ladeeez ;)" pose from a cat before  :Luv2:
Im crossing my fingers that its not kidney disease as i lost my girl to pkd and it was heartbreaking, However with care and treatment the outcome dosesnt have to be bleak and there are cats who can live healthy lifes if caught early.
now im only talking from my personal experience of pkd here a varient  kidney disease so im not up to date on all of it but it is something that can be tested for, a "i think he may have kidney disease" diagnosis isnt really helpfull from a vet without clear evidence to back it up, thats just going to worry you witless :(
Mo my cat did put on weight but this was an ongoing battle due to the fact she had mouth ulcers (common with pkd) and unable to fully treat as she was never wellenough for the anitbiotics to fully work, dental disease, smelly breath etc all came as part of the package..so it went in circles..
with Lucan, apart from the exessive thirst hes not exhibiting a lot of the other symtoms which is brillant, I would continue to encourage his weight gain but yeah look into getting food specifically for him and the fortekor or  benazacare as Rosella suggests, however without tests its a case of not knowing really as the exsessive thirst could be from a number of other things.
as allways id say you as his parent/slave know him best, and would be able to spot things that just dont seem quite right with him. from what you say he seems to be doing brilliant tbh, the weight gain is fantastic  :wow:
as for crying, he may just be a needy cat, its not unusual to want nighttime attention, cats seem to thrive on nighttime adventures when we want to sleep :innocent:  :shy:
fingers crossed for him as he is just too cute for words, that pose

That's great info thanks. I go from thinking he is unwell ti thinking he's just adjusting to having regular food and water.
Gill, last thurs he weighed 2.7kg and the day after we got him he was 2.2.
he follows me everywhere so the night time yowling is just lonliness i think.

Thats a lovely increase in weight but he has some way to go but the way he is putting it on he will be a decent weight soon, please keep an eye on his weight and expect it to slow down as he gets heavier.

Yes I reckon he is lonely at night too and possibly scared you are leaving him

Hi, yes. He's doing well! he's slowly putting on weight and beginning to make himself right at home here! He has to go to a new home though, my mouse is not coping and won't come inside and when she does it's only in the bedroom. She's started to wee inside again (on the floor). So my partners friend is taking the new boy this week  :( I'm so glad he has a good home to go to but i'll miss him greatly. I'll put up a recent pic so you can see if he looks better.

Pleased to hear that he's doing so well in himself, it's a shame that things didn't work out at yours but he has so many reasons to be thankful to you  Fingers crossed he settles in as well at his new home and that little Mouse starts to get her confidence back once she gets her house back to herself

Thanks, i can hardly think about him not being here. Mouse is not a part of this home now though and I've given it over a month, Lucan respects her now and doesn't hiss or growl at her but she still won't relax in here and just runs. The couple who're having Lucan are used to older cats they have always had cats and they lost their  2 old girls last year.
Lucan does keep attacking the dog still, not that she cares she just looks at me like "why did he do that"?? He waits til the dog's eating and then will have a close up sniff of her!
