Title: My first kittens!
Post by: Bren22 on June 10, 2011, 12:29:27 PM
:innocent:  My new fostercat Snowball, who I only picked up on Friday, presented me with to beautiful kittens yesterday, replicas of herself.  There was a poorly tabby who didn't make it which is sad, but she's a lovely girl, affectionate and very loving to her babies.  I could spend hours (stop kidding Bren, you do spend hours) just watching them together.  I've called the little ones Icicle and Frosty, a bit lame I know, but my daughter suggested Advocaat and Lemonade!

Are they all white or does the one on the right have a little tabby splodge on its head? I keep looking at that pic  :Luv:

They both have small grey/black smudges on their heads, as does Snowball herself.  I also have a white cat Harvey (no relation to these) who had a smudge just like it when he was a kitten but lost it as he grew older.  He's now white all over (unless he's been somewhere he shouldn't) and I expect they'll lose their smudges too.

;D  All doing well, growing rapidly although one is still much bigger than t'other.  I think I may start weighing the babes.  I was concerned about Snowball's behaviour.  She hates being confined in the pen so I left the door open so she could walk around - they're in a room of their own so no other cats or humans can get in - but she started moving the kittens out too, I found one or the other in various places around the room.  So it's back to incarceration for Snowball whether she likes it or not.  I think maybe I was 'too interested' in them for her liking. So, hard as it is, I'm giving them long spells of peace and quiet and it seems to be working, she's calmer except at mealtimes when she is very vocal!

Glad they are doing well even though Mum keep trying to relocate them!

I know what you mean about you wanting to see them, obviously to check on them, Mum and Mum's food and water levels etcetera.  I am so pleased that we have a small cctv camera wired up so I can spy on them without them knowing.  Again useful for  a pregnant Mum to see if she is getting nearer her delivery time.  We already had some wires in place, so luckily it was not too tricky to do.  I think the camera cost around £19 from Maplin - on offer at the time.  But last year something chewed the wires, and we had to replace it with a slightly dearer one.

Another thing I do, with there being other cats in the room, I use a Feliway diffuser and keep Mum and kittens covered over with a lightweight sheet, and cardboard around the cage for good measure!  All in an attempt to make Mum feel extra safe and secure.  Then I literally just do the minimum amount of contact to let her get to know her babies.

Keep up the good work!

The camera is poised ready for any opportunity, trouble is Snowball doesn't want me touching her babies, she gets a bit agitated when I hold them. So I still don't know what sex they are.  Littlest one, Icicle, has its eyes open already - yesterday, day 8 - and is waving her/his head around at the new sensation.  I'll keep trying to gets pics.

:Luv2:They're 3 weeks old now and of course absolutely gorgeous.  Walking well but occasionally wobbly.  Found the way out of the pen yesterday by negotiating a 3 inch climb.  Clever kittens.  Mum has the run of the room now I know she won't let them get hungry or cold.  She's still very attentive and there like a shot if one of them cries. I suppose the next step is beginning to eat proper food, but they're not interested yet.  Frosty has had his nose in the water bowl but that was accidental and he wasn't very amused! They follow movement a bit and when Snowball is chasing her feathery toy they seem quite interested.  Any advice about feeding etc very welcome.

Oh my......

They look wonderful and remind me so much of my ragdoll kittens when they were born. Pure white and so cute.

Enjoy them while they are that small. I love this part. Just watch out for all the little hidey holes that they might find lol.

You should keep mum with them for at least 8 weeks (I kept mummy ragdoll with my litter for the first 8 weeks). In this time, try and get them used to noises like vacuum cleaners and try and allow as many people as poss to play with them (make sure they wash their hands before). This will help them socialise as well as possible.

Re feeding have you got them on any solids yet ?. I used royal canine kitten 36. Watch out for diarrhoea that might indicate you are going onto solids too early.

 :Luv:

PS can you see the resemblance to the raggie kittens lol ?
Title: Re: My first kittens!
Post by: Bren22 on July 04, 2011, 12:20:47 PM
Yes, there is a resemblance.  They aren't having any solids yet but I may try them quite soon. Mummy is feeding them well  and as there are only two of them I think they're getting enough!!!  I have to look very carefully around the room to see where they're hiding when I go in, but Snowball soon shows me where they are.

Sounds like mum and you have done a fantastic job. The kittens will keep the immunity that mum's milk/colostrum gives them for the first five or so weeks. After that, it will start to wear off. Mum could go back into season quickly once they stop taking her milk (I was surprised with how quickly My Ellie did).

Mum will start to get a little weary of them around the 8 week mark. She will start to withdraw more and more until they are independent. And there's the fun with the exploring/wobbly running/falling etc etc.

Thank you for sharing the lovely pics and hoping you enjoy this special time.  :Luv:

the coloured smudges indicate the colour they carry ie blue or black etc and usually fades and disappears.
keep an eye out for deafness as not just blue eyed whites can be deaf-I raised a litter of 5 orange eyed whites years ago all females all needed hand feeding -luckily mum puss did the cleaning -one was deaf but it was not at all obvious until she went to her new home.

:Luv: They are now 5 weeks old and have been renamed Minty (boy) and Polo (girl) as they are to go to a forever home together.  Lovely family came to see one...........nuff said.  Using the litter tray to wee in, washing their little faces and getting up to mischief. Fave game is (s)kittles, with the cardboard tubes out of loo rolls.Still not eating solids (except for the litter occasionally!)but quite interested in mum's grub so won't be long now.  The picture was taken last week so they're even bigger now.

I'm getting a bit concerned that Minty might be deaf.  He is totally oblivious to the vacuum cleaner, both the hand held one I use for every day, and the mighty Dyson Animal for a proper cleanout.  He's either deaf or totally fearless, and is also ignoring me.  I'm presuming kittens hearing only develops over time and that perhaps they can hear soundwaves that we can't and vice-versa.  I'll keep an eye on him.  They ate their first proper food yesterday - cooked turkey breast blitzed and served in it's own jus!!

I think being white there's quite a high chance of it. Would that affect his potential home if he was, is it an indoor/outdoor home?

  Happy news!  the kittens' new family came to see them again yesterday and I told them the news about Minty.  They still want him and understand he won't be able to go out on his own except in a secure area.  I even suggested a harness although I haven't ever known a cat to tolerate that.  I'm certain they're going to have lots of fun with the two of them for years to come and that the kittens will have a good life.  They're six weeks old now, doing everything as they should.  All bodily functions working properly and in the right places (i.e. the litter tray).

I assume you have already, but I would stress to the new family the importance of getting both babies chipped (even if they are going to be indoor or in a secure garden).  It might also be worth getting minty a collar with "I am deaf" on it incase he ever gets out and gets lost.  Kitty collars do personalised ones ;)  http://www.kittycollars.co.uk/

Aww they are mini versions of our girls!  :Luv2:

So beautiful! Both our girls are deaf and it doesn't effect them one jot. They ignore us just as much as a cat that can hear

:naughty:  Bee you are sooooo right!  I sometimes think I must have FOUR deaf cats, mostly when I call them in at night.  That's why I've always tried to find names which don't sound too daft when you are out in the garden.......in your pj's.......at midnight............waving a food sachet........trying to persuade them that a nice warm house is preferable to a garden full of lovely worms, beetles, sometimes mice (but not for long) etc.  As far as Minty goes I think he'll do fine especially as he will have his little sister with him.  He watches her constantly so will learn from her I'm sure.

So, I have another couple of weeks with them, then a week just with Snowball before she too goes to her new home.  I think my first kitten venture has gone quite well................I'm sure it won't be the last..........but not yet Angie!!!

:Luv2:  They've gone..........to their new home.   They went yesterday and have settled in well, already found hiding places and getting up to mischief.  I'm missing them but am expecting more new fosters next weekend.  Snowball is in being spayed today and will go to her home at the weekend.  All in all, a very successful few weeks, and great fun.  In the picture you can see Snowball on the window ledge behind the cat tree which the kittens loved.
