Title: Introducing new very timid cat!!
Post by: caledonia on September 18, 2012, 11:13:02 AM
Hello all,

Well Nina and I have been joined by our new furry friend who has did nothing other than hide under the bed. I have set up my bedroom as his safe room purely because it is the quitest area. I have a huge living room come kitchen so neither of these was suitable and want to be able to have space between him and Nina who I am trying to keep in the main living area so he doesn't hear her too much!

So 12 hours in and nothing - no food taken, no litter use, just cowering under the bed. I have spoke to him, not approached him other than when I was frantically tried to figure out how I couldn't see him under the bed - until I realised he was actually moving so I couldnt see him.

I made the decision to leave Nina in the living area last night with all her stuff - which she was less than pleased about but I couldn't try to move him or indeed allow her to cry at the bedroom door.

Nina is aware he is there but she just seems to be dying to get to meet him - no reaction from her other than purring and sniffing at the door and then just about throwing herself through the bedroom door when I was in the bathroom. I had hoped last night he would come out of hiding and have a sniff but he didn't.

Totally happy for him to take his time - just worried no food or litter use yet - in my previous intros cats usually venture out when you leave them - he hasn't - to the point treats were left beside the bed.

I know he just needs time - but is there any point I should be worried?

Thanks  :thanks: :thanks:

Is he a kitten or an older cat?  And was he a rescue or from his birth home?  Did he seem timid when you went to collect him?

Just pondering ('cos in your position I'd be feeling the same!) and wondering if he has a naturally nervous disposition or whether its just the move has unsettled him.  Would it be possible to call whoever you got the little feller from and ask what his default mode is if you don't already have that knowledge?  At least that way you may be able to determine what's making him nervous or if he's just naturally reticent.

Bless Nina - sounds like she's well up for a new kitty playmate  :)

He is 2 - a maine coon so for their breed not yet fully grown. He is from the home he went to at 8 months. Looking at his paperwork I wonder whether he was maybe meant to be a stud but it didn't work out that way. I'm just reading between the lines.

He was very jumpy in his home - I visited him there twice and although he was out and about he was very jumpy when approached or spoken to. It was a very noisy house with two kids and a very barky dog.

I'm hoping he will have been out when I get home in a few hours. He came with food and records but no blanket or anything so he doesn't have anything familiar. Not ideal.

I just hope I'm doing everything right :-/ - also wish you could let them understand this is forever and they won't face all that change again bless him

One my cats, Bass, was incredibly shy at first. She hid for the first couple of months, only coming out to eat and use her litter tray when she felt it was safe.

Could you bear to have his litter tray and food bowls in the bedroom for a few days?

A Felliway difuser really helped Bass - it won't work miracles, but it's worth a try. It takes a few days to start working and you need to put it in the room he's in most of the time.

Has your new boy got a box or something he can hide in - somewhere he can retreat to and call his own? A cardboard box turned upside down with a hole in the side, perhaps?

Talk to him, even if it's just rubbish! He'll eventually come and see you, just out of curiosity. I used to talk to Bass in a silly voice, because I was worried I sounded tense and anxious and didn't want to make her worse!

Other than that, it just takes time, especially if he's naturally a nervous cat.

Good luck!

Thanks for that,

His litter tray, food and water is all in my bedroom. I also have a bed in there for him and a cat tower which has a hidey hole area and also a cat a seperate tunnel for him to hide in - I didn't think of a box though and now he is under the bed lol! I actually wokoe up in the middle of the night and thought the cat tunnel was him and was talking away to it!

I did try and go into the room and lie down and talk to him, I even lay just reading a book but then I hear Nina crying from the living room and I get stressed as I imagine he does. Nina doesn't like being alone and its hard hearing her crying as she isn't using to being kept out the room!

Fingers crossed that at least the treats have been eaten when I get home  :scared: :scared: although I did expect him to creep out during then ight and he didnt!

Ah, sounds like he has everything he needs then!

I think it really is just a matter of time. But I know how you're feeling, I was worried about Bass for ages and I just wanted her to chill and make herself at home. (BTW, Bass is a now a total cuddlebum: sits on my lap, sleeps on the bed with us every night and a couple of weeks ago chased the neighbourhood tom out of the garden, so they do change!)

Do have a think about the Feliway, though, we used it for three or four months and it really helped.

I will have a wee think about the Feliway - I have used it before and had the spray too but it didn't ever seem to help but I know every ct reacts to it differently. I will be home in the next 90mins so just hoping the treats at least have been eater  :wow:

It sounds like you're doing just fine.  Fingers crossed the treats will have been eaten.  Bet you can't wait to get home.  ;D

I think its just a matter of time and he will be able to hear Nina too.

It will take hime time to adjust to a nice quiet house and everything must be very scarey for him.

Purrrrrrrrsonally I would stop talking to him at moment cos it maybe freeking him out and wait for him to emerge and eat and stuff and to get his legs, then start again.

Misa hid under the recliner for weeks and would only come out to eat, how such a big cat got through the gap I dont know but used to have his food , water and litter tray behind.

He liked strokes but as soon as he had eaten he pulled himself back through the gap.

Hope he settles in fairly quickly but be prepared for a long haul.......whats his name?

Thanks everyone! Blinking got held up at work so now waiting on next train.... Home soon though... It's only an 8 min journey lol!

He is currently called snowflake and I never ever change a cats name... Ever! However he is only 2 and well I'm thinking of maybe Rio (after my love for the place and it's pretty) or Branco (which is Portuguese for white).

I haven't spoken to him too much... More just announce when I go into the Room. I might lie on the bed and read later... I'll see how his room is looking!

This is total contrast to my Raggie Edgar who strolled out the carrier looked about and plonked himself on the couch lol

Poor baby sounds very frightened :care: Once he realises he's 'safe' I bet he'll come out from his shell (and hopefully from under the bed too!). Coming from such a busy household I bet he'll be over the moon to 'only' have Nina to contend with  ;D I am also a big Feliway plug in fan and reckon it will help him relax and settle in to his new home if you get one  :)

Looking forward to pics once he's settled in  ;D I like both Rio and Branco, both waaaaaaay better than Snowflake  :naughty:

Well I'm home and he must have remained under the bed all day :-(

Water, food and litter untouched! I had placed a treat stick right next to him under bed- half of it is gone! I'm really worried about lack of water and litter use. Currently at about 22 hrs at mine so I will start panicking soon :-(

Doesn't feliway take a couple of weeks to work? There is at pets at home v near me - just conscious it might not help just now!

Small progress being I lay next to bed on floor and he didn't move - just looked at me. I tried the slow blinking then looked away. Nothing and then all
I can hear is little miss squeaky nina crying like a banshee two rooms away!

Oh this is going to turn me grey lol

I dont know if I am being daft but wonder if Nina would help him? If you can hear her so can he. Maybe he likes cats better than people.

Obviously under supervision, dont let her get under the bed.

Dont panic yet, start after 48 hrs

Apparently our two girls didn't eat or use their tray for a couple of days before we got them. They'd been homed for a few days somewhere with kids who upset them, then they were rescued and we got them two days later so they'd been all over the place and were really unsettled, to say the least.

Feliway takes two or three days to work, I think.

Gill I did wonder about that - with Nina - he has came from a house with another cat and a dog.

Last night she actually jumped into the room and I didn't straight away grab her- I just thought I'd see what happened! Well the little bimbo had a wee wander about and jumped on the bed not even realising he was under it! Then she trotted past the bottom of the bed and cocked her head and had a wee sniff... She then went to get under the bed so I grabbed her just as he hissed!

So hmmm not sure! I don't want him to feel so terrified but don't want to set him back further letting Nina in!

His last meowy said she didn't separate them and  he was fine!!!

Hmmm I might try some supervision again later - just don't want to do the wrong thing!

Jezebel I'm glad to hear your girls were the same - you can't help not panic though! Maybe cats coming from a noisy home are just waiting for the noise to kick off again! :-/

Such a hard thing often introducing a new cat especially when they have history and even when they dont like Lupin!

Sam thank you so so much for those links.... Really put my mind at ease!

No need to panic just yet. Nina isn't phased other than when I leave the room but def going to ensure she doesn't run in their again until the boy is feeling better :-)

Oh dear - 36 hrs in and still nothing! Not ventured out at all. I'm obviously sleeping in the bedroom at night which might make him worse, but he def didn't venture out all night cos I barely slept a wink :-(

If we get to the end of today and nothing then I'll really be panicking! I'm starting to feel like a cat novice :-(

Have you tried putting his food under the bed next to him? I don't know how much room you've got under there but that's what I've done with my scaredy cats.

Just a thought, other people will know better than me but would it be worth borrowing a cage and putting him in that for a couple of days with his food and tray? It's also a good way for them to get used to other cats.

I've put some wet food under the bed next to him today - its his fluid intake im worried about.

He came from a house with another cat and a dog so used to animals. Just been on the phone to my friend who has a household of 4 Persians and she has suggested letting my tiny cat into the room. I'm not sure. It goes against all the advice but it's how she has managed in the past. Nina isn't aggressive and is used to other cats.

I just worry her crying for me when I leave her locked in the living room is panicking him more! Maybe if he sees she is half his size!!!

I just don't know :-(

If it's any help, someone I know is fostering a mother cat + kittens and when they first arrived, the mother cat didn't use the litter tray for three days! (And apparently when she finally did, the results were pretty impressive! :wow:)

Thanks Jezebel. I spoke to my vets who are just lovely. They have said its not a concern either but they have suggested I try and get him out from under the bed and either in the bathroom or in his carrier.... Somewhere where he will have to deal with me and see me rather than just hiding.

It makes sense - my lovely boyf also checked with his vets who said the same!

Crikey am I prepared for how timid this little boy is!!!

I think the idea of a cage is a good one and also trying Nina with him.

He is obviously very very scared and dont think him hearing a cat crying is helping when he cant see her.

You say that he hissed when he saw her before and at least that is a reaction!

Also maybe being in the same room as you is not helping.

My brother had a Maine Coon from a kitten and it was always a scaredy cat unless oiutside playing with the neighjbourhood cats but he really didnt do people very well.

I dont think he is going to come round soon so get yourself prepared for a long journey with him

My Misa who is just a giant moggie only does me but the doorbell sends him scampering to hide

Well I've came home and he has used the litter tray and ate the food put under the bed. Yay finally!!   He might also have used scratching frame as big paw prints all over the plush carpet on it! Ive set up a box at side of the bed... I'm going to try and coax him into it as I think bathroom might be better for him - no where to hide. I've just held nina into room.... She is purring and squeaking at him and he didn't hiss. However I can't let them meet under the bed- that would be a total disaster!

Thanks for all the advice everyone! Really appreciated.... Xxx

Pleased he's eaten and done the necessary in the tray!  :)  Sounds like he's a very shy boy but that will make it all the more rewarding when he comes out of his shell - I bet in a few weeks when he's settled in you'll look back at this and wonder if it was a different cat!
Title: Re: Introducing new very timid cat!!

Thats really good news and he knew you were gone LOL

Please dont put him in a room with no place to hide, he must have a hiding place or two, even if just cardboard boxes with a hole in ior he will just be totally freeked.

Sounds like Nina and him may be friends before he does people  ;D ;D

I agree with Gill, don't put him somewhere he can't hide. I tried this once with Bass and she was so scared she cried pitifully so I had to let her back into the bedroom where she could hide under the wardrobe.

It's only been a couple of days for your boy, and he's now using his tray and eating so he's making huge progress.

Ladies I can't even bring myself to tell you how bad it got.... Firstly I shall assure you he is back under the bed and frankly he can stay there until Christmas as long as he eats and pees!!

So yep never put a cat in a room with no where to hide... That thought struck me 5 mins after he went in the bathroom! However by then he had discovered a hole into the boxed in pipes I didn't know existed! Let's just say 30 mins later I was still in tears, my poor neighbour had called her joiner friend and he started to remove the wood at which point snowflake backed himself out and I took him back to the bedroom.

What an emotional roller coaster and the poor boy must be really terrified now! I'm going to just leave him - my concern was just the feeding - he has did that so I'll feed him under the bed for as long as it takes. I love my vet but next time I'll trust my gut!

I'm unsure what to call him now.... Houdini???
Title: Re: Introducing new very timid cat!!

So sorry you didnt see the posts first and vets are not very good a cat behaviour

And a virtual stroke for Snoflake

I am so pleased he is back under the bed and yes he still may be there at Christmas but as long as he is eating and using the tray, what the hell

He needs to be allowed to take his own time to do things, please dont force him and if you can make some more hiding places in your bedroom for him that would be good......those cardboard boxes maybe.

So now its take a deep breath, have a cup of tea or something and go and watch tv and then bed and tomorrow is a new day and Snoflake can take his time doing what he feels is right for him.

So pleased he is safe and has decided that he feels safe under the bed  ;D

Don't worry - new cardboard box in bedroom ( I got a zoo plus delivery today) - water and food under bed and door firmly closed. Nina has had a little sniff in and he hissed but nina purred again so im thinking they will be pals before he ever comes near me now LMFAO!

On closer inspection to bedroom he must have been on the windowsill earlier... I've no doubt set him back tonight but he will be all secure in there the coming days so fingers crossed.

Thanks again - your all superstars

It might be a bit to soon for him to come out and play but it might be worth investing in some stinky catnip toys (check out the yeoww cat nip toys in the purrs shop  ;) http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/shop/ ).... I have yet to meet a cat who can resist the lure of cat nip.

If I was you I'd leave a cat nip toy near the bed ... so he can smell it.  Then I'd just sit on the floor and and read a book, do your knitting, watch the telly do anything other than pay him any attention.  Cats are such nosey creatures he will be compelled to see what you are doing that is so much more interesting than him.  If he does venture out don't move or do anything just talk very quietly to him to reassure him it's all ok.  Once he sees that's it ok try getting him to play .... something like a long piece of string or ribbon is always a good toy as you can interact with him without getting too close.  NB:  Don't leave him unattened with string / ribbons just yet though in case he swallows it.

Remember patience is a virtue and I'm sure he will soon reward you by coming out from under the bed  ;)

Here is another link that might help ... http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php/topic,14319.0.html

Oh Dear.   I can imagine how traumatised you must be feeling, let alone Snowflake.

I agree the best thing to do with cats this nervous is first to make sure their environment is escape proof, and then secondly, to act as if you're completely ignoring their presence there, save for leaving food, water and a clean litter tray.  It sounds like he's going to need a great deal more time, but it's very positive that he's been exploring, and checking out the cat scratching post.  Good advice from everyone - give him places he can hide and feel safe, and sit quietly.   Maybe leave the door open to the room where you and Nina spend most of your time when the two of you are doing nothing special.  In time, curiousity will get the better of him.

Gosh, it has been a long two days for you hasn't it?  Some cats are very defensive but he will almost certainly come around with time, love and patience.  :catlove2:

As always, some brilliant tips on here already, here's my tuppence worth.  :)

For introductions I leave a big cat carrier in the room with a soft jumper inside (one of my used one's that had my scent on it). The cats use it as a hiding place first, then a bed. It usually works really well as when they need to be moved around the house I could just quietly close the door and pick it up, and the cat always has his "safe" place to bolt back into, which coincidentally smells of me  :sneaky:

This is a good way of getting him accustomed to one room at a time where there is no hiding place, and can also be helpful with introductions, as his scent will gradually fill the house and Nina will get used to his presence before being confronted with him in the flesh.  :star2:

Credit to Purrs for this idea, too Actually I think it might have been Tiggy's Mum who gave me this one.  :thanks:

Then there was little Polly who after 1 whole day just plonked herself down on my bed and said "Well I'm here, what are you going to do about it?" and proceeded to punch anyone who didn't like it on da nose   :Luv:

Ah that just made me giggle out loud at my desk and get some very strange looks!

We have had yet more movement - he was in the bedroom all last  - I closed the door and left the TV on and then later on decided I wouldn open the door ajar slightly and see what happens. Well nothing very much - Nina went for a sniff - decided she didn't want to venture further and we just lay on the couch together.

When it came to bed time I decided to leave my bedroom door open and see what Nina decided to do - purely because for the last two nights she has cried and wailed when locked in the living room and I was worried he was thinking he had been moved to a cat torture factory

Well Nina was on the bed all night with me and not paying much attention to him at all however at 4am I was awoken to a little bit of hissing in the hall. Went to find out what was going on thinking why is Nina hissing in the hall when snowflake is under the bed - well lo and behold he wasn't - it would appear he went walk about - I went to go to the loo and there he was so I actually just went back to bed and ignored him (and needed a pee badly for a few hours). Then at 5am I was back up again to a little bit of hissing - this time snowflake was in the living room and nina in the hall. So it would appear he went walk about - and despite little nina hissing and letting off a pathetic little growl they were just sitting looking at each opther from accross the room. No sound from snowflake but he seemed happier to look at Nina than he has been to look at me!!

Eventually I moved his litter tray in the living room and put the box I have with a towel in there too and closed him in.

Needless to say this morning when I went in I have no clue where he is   :P - perhaps under the couch, maybe hidden behind some other piece of furniture...who knows!! As long as I get home and some food is gone and the litter used I will be happy.

So they are swapped over - Nina has rest of the house and he has living room. Nina was sniffing all around my bedroom where he has been today and he will be getting a good sniff of her in the living room.  :shy: :shy:

Really surprised he went walk about last night. It might have been Nina being in the room freaked him out and he dashed but its a catch 22 - let him hear her crying and wailing or let him see what he is dealing with - a tiny cat half the size of him who cant even hiss properly! He has saw her, he didn't hide - so phew lets just be thankful he is in a room I am not going to need a joiner to get him out of!!

Honestly last night I was so upset rehoming a rotweiller was becoming more preferable! The emergency joiner was dragged out the pub by his wife and me in tears answered the door! Then out pops a huge pure white cat with only a mane of hair and a tail and a shaved body - the joiner must have thought he had one pint too many!

I hope he is doing well when you get home cos this is so early but you need to let him lead you.

Although you probably think that there are places he cant get into you will find that 2 inches of space at floor level and he probably can get in............

Thats all there was for giant Misa to get under the recliner......sigh

And if he can get in he can get out lol

Sending lots more virtual strokes for Snoflake and some real ones for Nina

Yep the realisation he can get back out I've realised after he backed himself out of the pipes when the joiner was trying to get him out.

I'm not going to even look for him when I get home... Just check his food and toilet.

I imagine I will finally get to meet him properly about Christmas time :-)

The CP rescue lady came to collect me and Misa for his second jab, cos I had brought him home so soon after they took him he had only had first part of jab.

Reckon it was just under two weeks after he arrived and he was under the recliner which was the end part of a three section sofa.

She tried sitting in the garden while coaxed him out NOT!

So she had to help me to gently tip the whole thing over so we could catch him cos he wasnt going anywhere!

When we went to collect Bass from the rescue, she managed to get inside an armchair. It took about 20 minutes to persuade her to come out!

I don't honeslty think anything would coax this little fella out! Well he is huge in fact - got my first chin rub last night - I just want to cuddle him all up - but oh I am being very patient and will ignore him all week now lol  :shify:

Title: Introducing new very timid cat!!
Post by: caledonia on September 20, 2012, 18:00:25 PM
Ok I'm making a total dogs dinner of this and don't know what to do!

I never should hve phones the vets yesterday and it's just all went wrong and I'm trying to stress this boy out as little as possible and failing.

So came home - good def not touched, litter tray *might* hve been but no soiling I can see/find just looks disturbed.

My dilema

-  flat with only bedroom or living room available as safe room as kitchen/livingroom combi

- he is now in livingroom after I stupidly left bedroom door open last night to stop nina wailing to be let in and distressing him.

- it would be much easier if he was in the bedroom cos I could leave him in peace. I'm not moving him however but if I go into living room then it's noise and Nina and him terrified.

- I have no clue where he is and don't want to distress him by trying to find him.

So do nina and I camp outside the livingroom all night or do we venture in and just go about day to day living.

Honestly I cannot believe how lucky I have been in the past introducing cats into my home :-(

Relax, get on with your evening as if he wasn't there, and he'll sense the calmness.

Eventually he'll pop out and have a sniff around. He'll be picking up on your stress which will be affecting his confidence.  :relax:

Post by: Gill (sneakiefeline) on September 20, 2012, 18:30:21 PM
I would leave the bedroom door open and then do as Sheila says.

If he doesnt appear before bedtime you may have to do a nosey round to see if you can find him. But if you do dont scare hime and dont move him unless he is in danger, remember the two inches rule.  I would move all his food water and litter tray back to the bedroom, irrespective of where he is and leave the bedroom door open.

Afraid the moral in this story is, dont move him from the bedroom, if he wants to move around at night leave the door open like you did.

I think you are trying to do this too fast and not taking the lead from him.

He thinks the bedroom is his safe place so by shutting him a different room, just cos he went there was not the way to go.

Time, loads of time, slowly slowly catchee monkee.

I have lots of sympathy cos have never had easy introductions here but time and patience is of the essence

Post by: caledonia on September 20, 2012, 18:42:27 PM
My intention wasn't to move him to the livingroom at all but I closed the living room door at 5am cos I didn't want Nina sitting hissing at him any longer  and freaking him out. When I couldn't see him between 7am- 9am I didn't want to try and find him and move him and distress him. But I can't leave the house with the two cats together so I didn't really have any choice! I suppose I should have tracked him down and moved him, I made the wrong decision.

It isn't my intention to rush him at all, not at all I'm just at a loss as to how I'm meant to manage both of them, leave doors ajar and then separate them when I go out to work during the day. Nina cries and wails if she is shut out the bedroom at night when im so i let her in. Big mistake.

I'm only in half day tomorrow and in all weekend so the same issue won't arise.

I had a 3 bedroom flat before so juggling cats and rooms was less of an issue. I know I'm making a mess of this :-(

No you not making a mess of it, its very hard to get right, believe me I know

Maybe I misunderstood cos thought that him and Nina were in bedroom overnight but he went for a wander...........too far to keep scrolling down lol

I thought he was back in bedroom but obviously wrong. Reckon you need to do a little search for him now, I know that Sasa can hide in my study and cant find her and Lupin hides somewhere the same.

One way maybe of finding him maybe to let Nina in and she will do it for you.

But if you do that leave bedrppm door open so he can escape back to his safe place.

Must be so hard when you are working as well cos at least my problems had me on the spot cos retired.

However I have had very clever birmans who howled and howled and scratched up the carpets under the doors so I couldntr get in!!!!!!!!!!!!

Upstairs I have a fish slice and a knife on the landing window sill so I could back in the bedroom after noryy Lupin locked me out.........sigh

It's a cat, Caledonia. This is their job. Mess with your head until they think you don't care any more. Only then will he show his face and wonder why all the panic has died down.

Stop panicking about him, honestly. If you keep beating yourself up and fretting its only making things worse. Sit down, feed Nina and put the telly on.

We had kittens who lived under the wardrobe for three weeks. You have no choices here, just relax, he'll come around when he's ready and nothing you can do or say will change that.

Once you've got an idea where's he's holed up (as Gill says) get the kettle on, tea, sofa, telly, relax OK?

Well this will make you laugh if nothing else... Sitting on the couch, feet up with Nina on my lap wondering why the tv sound isn't working! Closer inspection of entertainment unit and there he is having shoved the video and DVD player out the way nestled behind them and cables half out!

So right now nina is on my lap purring away and I'm drinking tea and watching silent tv while he sits watching us! All his stuff is back in the bedroom so hopefully later he will edge out and head back... Maybe nina and I could fake sleeping.

I know I sound a total stress head... Apologies but I'm just fretting over this boy and worrying he won't settle. Silly I know.

Thanks ladies... I'll leave you all to enjoy your evening in peace whilst I try and pretend I don't mind a silent TV lol

Well made the decision to keep nina out of bedroom to reinstate bedroom as Rio's safe place.

He didn't venture out however I was out and just home and not only has he ate the wet food left, he had destroyed the litter tray ( well its well used) and got huge white paw prints all over my chest of drawers, window sil and the bookcase.... Hmmm someone went walk about today lol!

So glad he is exploring. Going to just go about my business today and leave bedroom door open. Nina still hissing at him a little but they walked past each other last night and no paws flying.

Do I just leave her to wander in or shut him away? She is hissing a bit but seems really curious about him

Thoughts? I don't want to muck it up again lol

Oh don't worry - I'm leaving him in there until he ventures out himself and even then the litter tray etc will be there for a while.

Only problem is it's my bedroom - I only have a one bed flat so when I go to bed he is stuck in there with me - which I'm sure he hates!

I leave the door ajar when I'm at home and rest of the time it's closed :-)

As you have two accessible, separate rooms so each cat has their own space, it should be OK.  :)

I have eight cats in four rooms which has been a struggle when introductions were needed, thankfully I have a garden with comfy hides and shelters, and at bedtime no-one cares if they're piled up together for warmth on our bed. It's only teatime my lot get feisty.

I hope things continue as well as they have so far, the shaky start should be outweighed by the sunny future.  :Luv:

Ah he is getting clever.... Clearly been out on my bed and on the drawers lots today. Door just a tiny bit ajar and I only ever catch the sight of his tail dashing under the bed when he hears my footsteps lol!

Nina also hasn't hissed since this morning although granted we have been in the rest of the house ignoring him. She slept on the bed with me last night and he got up and explored the rest of the house and used the big litter tray in the hall. Nina didn't react to this and then he returned to under the bed... Progress :-)

I don't know about that lol - your two appear to be able to be in the same room. We might have the same size flat though as I'm a one bed livingroom/kitchen. His safe room is the bedroom but then he is very diff to your boy as he is mega timid and not hissed at Nina once. We have the same scenario but in reverse. I have a hissy resident cat and you have a hissy newbie lol

Any further movements from Rio?
Title: Introducing new very timid cat!!

Any further movements from Rio?

Yes and no to be honest. I think the issue is him being in my room means at night I'm in his space - all be it in bed sleeping.

Positives - he is def wandering about the room more and last night used the litter tray when Nina and I were asleep on the bed ( I woke up as did Nina but we didnt react). He also ate fresh food id just put down under the bed when I was in bed this morning. It's at the edge of the bed but he is under the bed to eat it. So progress in that he feels more relaxed to carry out body functions and eat with us there.

Negatives - he does seem to leave bedroom at night and I wish it was to explore but think its cos we are there. Then when I get up, he looks at me started and rushed back to the bedroom close to the floor. I mean he is seeing the house at least and exploring but it us to avoid me lol!

Nina is hissing hardly at all now and he isn't scared of her - just me :-)

So we will just plod on, bedroom door closed when I'm out, ajar when I'm in and hopefully in the coming weeks he will get less scared of me.

I lie down on the floor sometimes to talk to him but he backs away under the bed so don't want to push it. I've deliberately made phone calls when in bed so he hears my voice. I talk to him when I enter his room or the living room if he is there but I avoid eye contact or do big slow blinks.

We shall see....

Oh thank you :-)

I'm not imagining there will be great change soon and I know he will come around.

This morning when we got up, he literally backed into nina in an effort to avoid me. Nina didn't hiss .... In fact she kind of looked at him like 'are you crazy?... You can't be scared of mum'! She was very confused lol xx

Sounds like Nina is quite interested  ;D

I have had Sasa for 7  years and she will still run from me if I walk towards her and its has taken over 6 years for her to let me stroke her......she was a semi-freal with a bad history and am sure she is scared of feet.

Yesterday she came up to me in the garden when I waggled a hand , for a stroke which is unheard of...........I was sitting down though.

I had given up any idea of her actually letting me touch her but she will do a littele squeak at the door and that means she wants me to go and stroke her on the stairs  ;D ;D

OR Lupin is annoying her cos she can see him LOL

I am terrified of losing her trust though, so long to get to this point and she has such soft fur and looks after it impeccably.

I'm really not sure why this boy is so scared but I'm hopeful in the next few months he will become a but more brave lol :-)

I predict that he will become a cuddlebum before too long :) My Riley is a very confident and nosy cat, extremely loving and I can literally do anything to him (including bench press him in the air while he's flat out on his back!) BUT, he is a complete wuss with visitors he doesn't know and hides if anyone he hasn't met comes over.

Once he gets to know you he's fine but when I went on holiday my Mum came to stay and look after them - she's recently moved back to the area so he'd only met her a few times and he hid for the whole 10 days I was away! In fact at one point she thought she had lost him and asked my sister what on earth she should do as she couldn't find him anywhere, my sisters advice was leave the country!  :evillaugh:

Anyway, to him you are still a stranger but I predict that ones he realises he's there to stay and you and Nina are his new family that he'll come out of his shell  :)

Oh dear.... So I got the Hoover out - cos with a cat and a wanderer I couldn't leave it longer than the week already had!

So wow Rio hates the Hoover too.... No great surprise there but like Nina he went sliding on his booty in an attempt to run from it. He then ran to the same hiding spot as Nina who must have wondered what the hell was going on! All I could see was this big white head watching me to make sure I wasn't coming towards him!

So now he is in the hall in the litter tray cupboard. Bedroom door wide open for him to return when he is brave enough!

One day I'll write a comedy sketch on this huge cat being such a coward- he is just gorgeous :-)

Just goes to show he's completely normal, it's in the  :rules: for cats to hate hoovers  :naughty: I waited three hours to hoover this afternoon as Lu was asleep in his little hut/bed in the front room and I didn't want to scare him away! Both mine HATE the hoover and scatter the second it comes out of the cupboard, oddly they are both happy to lay next to me virtually unconscious while I'm drying my hair with a very noisy hairdryer and happy to eat with the washing machine in full spin mode, but the hoover has them  :scared:
Title: Introducing new very timid cat!!

Hoovers and cats is a strange one .... Edgar would chase the hoover and wasn't phased by it to the point I nearly hoovered his tail once - but then he was a Raggie so normal rules don't apply *evil laugh*!

Rio is getting braver - all in an attempt to avoid me! I couldn't wait to pee any longer so went to the bathroom at which point he went into the livingroom. When I returned he went to leave but stopped to look at me first, then got to the hall and almost looked as though he was going to have a change of heart and come back!

He didn't - but I saw him hesitate so that's enough for me.

Meanwhile Nina hasn't hissed once through all this :-) :-) :-) *beaming*

Slowly slowly making progress! Returned from work to see Rio on the windowsill ... Obviously under the bed as soon as key in the door however food bowls totally empty - he had quite a supply of biscuits so really making up for last week lol!

Tonight sitting on couch and who should creep to livingroom door. I ignored him for a bit then did the slow blink hello.... And spoke very softy... He darted ofcourse! But venturing out the bedroom ... Whoop whoop!

I will ignore him the rest of the night :-).... Have a feeling he may venture some more later on

He just isn't brave enough just yet... I wish he was cos he seems desperate for a cuddle!!

How about lying down on the settee and see if he comes over for a sniff?  ;D

I am, I'm lying on the L part flat out with nina on my tummy... However he has retreated now! :-(

Just looking for opinions on when it's ok to go to work and give him free roam of the house.

My original plan was when him & Nina were interacting ok except thing is his fear of me seems to be preventing him from even noticing her.

He hasn't reacted to her at all. Nina was hissing initially but hasn't for a couple of days. They have walked past each other - no reaction.

I'm just wondering whether them interacting might bring him out his shell.

However I don't want to rush him and really I feel I should keep him locked in my room when I'm out.

It's a toughie!

I'd exercise a little caution whilst you're out, there could be an event while you're not in control that could at this early stage be catastrophic for their relationship.

Under ideal conditions these two would be separated for a week or so before even starting the introductions, so you're doing incredibly well so far.

Baby steps, one by one, gets you there safely.

Thanks Sheila, it's been a week and whilst they were totally separate the first few days with the size of my flat and nina crying to get in at night to the bedroom it wasn't sustainable.

However they have been ok so far but your right - ill keep them separate with him in the bedroom and her everywhere else.

That's what I had thought - best to keep them apart - think I was just hoping there was an easier way to let him relax but I know there isn't lol ... Patience :-)

Mine are about at the same stage, no hissing and tolerating each other well. Mouse doesn't run and hide when she sees Lucan now and he ignores her rather thatn hissing and growling.
I was wondering about leaving them alone as well but don't think i will for a least another week.

Catching up on this and so pleased to see he's getting braver.  It's a fantastic step of faith for him to begin exploring while you're in, so well done.  Think I agree about not giving him full run of the house just yet - best to start off small with maybe half an hour to an hour at a time when they're left together to begin with.

Thanks Sue, he has an eliment of free run at night as I go into bedroom and leave it ajar so he can essentially escape me in his space all night. It's. Very small flat so it's only an extra room and the hall (bathroom closed).

I'm pleased to report last night he explored and sniffed a lot... Including the side of my bed when I was in it! Didn't come too close but miles ahead of this time last week :-)

Sounds like he is making a little bit more progress everyday.

I don't want to confuse you ... but I would let him have free roam of the house,  mind you I'm one of the ones in the "just let them sort it out" camp.  When I brought a new little girl home to introduce to my two I just put the carrier on the floor, opened the door and said off you go! .

I was fortunate in that Rossi (the new girl) is a very confident little tortie madam who wasn't going to be intimidated by my big, very VOCAL Abyssinian boy Zephyr.  Zephyr walked up to her, sniffed her and yowled in her face .... she looked at him, fluffed up her tail, smacked him right between the ears and ran upstairs.  I think Zephyr was so shocked that she had actually touched him he just sat there looking slightly stunned.  We have never had any problems ... apart from the usual rough and tumble ... but no fighting.

I would say as long as Rio can get under "his" bed away from Nina things will be OK.  Of course the thing to be aware of if he is roaming free is to make sure he doesn't run out the door as soon as you open it when you get home.
Title: Introducing new very timid cat!!
Post by: caledonia on September 25, 2012, 19:57:12 PM
We have a landing with another door, then another door, then another door so thankfully there are three doors before they can get right out so sometimes Nina goes out on the landing for a little sniff as there are huge windows.

As for Rio roaming free. I really don't know. He is terrified of me, not of Nina. She is insure of him but no major issues so far between them! Last night again he roams about the house - she sleeps on bed with me. I do wonder whether he would feel more comfortable getting to know the house with me not in it but then them squabbling when I'm not here would be a nightmare. Neither is aggressive at all though.

He hadn't ventured out tonight - all rooms open - him under bed! He must be very bored. Nina could get to him under the bed... She is a third of the size of him but she hasn't tried as I think his size is intimidating her.

Loving the story of your little girl bobbing your boy in the face.... Brilliant! Hilarious in fact :-)

Have you tried bribery yet ....  :innocent:  .... according to the advert "cats will do anything for dreamies treats"  ;)

Wait for it wait for it!

Firstly no sniggering but I actually shed a tear at the breakthrough tonight! I'm on my belly talking to him under the bed and he didn't back away! I put my hand out and he sniffed it THEN starts flipping on his back and flashing his belly and running his scent on the bag next to him! He actually seemed to be showing off and relaxed, flipping on his back! Under a bed yes..... But

So Sam I went and got the dreamies... And I tell you he was half out for them... Full body out at the prospect of the dreamies then he had a change of heart and went back under BUT this is a big deal!

Sam I can't see the new photos on here.... I'm using tap talk! Let me try abd see them on safari :-)

The big fat "blonde" lump is Oliver.  I adopted him when his previous owners moved to Milan and left him behind  >:(  He is such a complete and utter wuss and posed no threat to Zephyr's status as No 1 boy.

We have progress.... Again!!! Eating this morning whilst I am there and with head out the bed.... First pic attached!

Also last night he came out when I went to bed and Nina and him chased each other around for a few mins. I paid close attention to make sure it was fun...Nina seemed to be teasing him... Running up to him and then running away, rewind repeat, rewind repeat! I was worried she was scared until she started lapping up his water in his safe room and I figured she was v relaxed to do that with him there! He doesn't walk so close to the floor when he comes out now either..., unless I'm walking lol!

By the weekend I think he will be out too :-)

If you kind of rattle the Dreamies bag while he's crunching on them he'll quickly associate the noise of the bag with the taste of the treat. I've trained my last three additions to "come" to the sound of a crinkly treat bag.  :)

Great progress, you should be very proud of yourself. Once you are sure they can play nicely together (and Nina is certainly making all the right moves) you can think about leaving the internal doors open while you pop out for a few minutes at a time.  ;)

Oh ladies thank you - he is still very jumpy and afraid of me but him rolling on his back last night was such a break through I cried! Lol!

Nina went under the bed beside him this morning then emerged out the other side and just stared at him then hissed. Think she can't quite make up her mind but that's ok. Plenty time :-)

He was actually chirping last night - first time he has made any noise! He was walking around my room with my lying in the bed... And he was chirping! I'm loving it :-)

Will get proper pics as soon as we have lift off... Lol

And newsflash..... Tonight I got my first purr!!! He head butted my hand.. And I got to tickle his tummy... All with my arm stretched under the bed but it's first proper contact!!! Wow!!

Worryingly he has really bad knots on his belly on his ruff despite being mostly shaved! Think it will take weeks if not months before I get to them with scissors :-(
Title: Re: Introducing new very timid cat!!

Now could be a good time to introduce the brush.  He may let you just gentle rub him with a brush rather than a hand it may be less threatening to him.  You don't actually have to brush him ... jusr rub it against him so he gets used to the feel of it. ;)

I don't think he has an issue being brushed... The issue is his previous owner never did it. She said he loved being groomed... She just didn't have the time.

I'll def be brushing him soon but those clumps on his front are like solid dreadlocks :-(

Crikey, phwooarrrrrr!  :Luv2: :Luv2:

Our Gillian (Ambercat) is a groomer, she advised I get a Mikki matt breaker (i got mine off e-bay, much cheaper than Amazon) - not the splitter it's a different thing. Basically it's a grooming tool that contains tiny blades protected by the teeth of the tool which cuts through matts safely rather than pulling them. By the look of Rio's coat, your gonna need two, one for each hand (you can turn the blades around to use right or left handed which you will appreciate when you see them).

Oh thank you so much everyone! He is gorgeous.

Last night was a great success - they were playing with the same toys although when I put the bird hanger on the door frame Rio just about knocked himself about on the door running at it! I think I have a big dumbo on my hands.

Today and tomorrow are the last days I'll seperate them I think. Rio is desperate to eat with Nina in the kitchen and hang out now... She isn't quite ready. If the weekend passes without incident then I think I've got an integrated household :-)

He is actually less jumpy than he was in his original home..... Amazing! Still not up for a stroke unless under bed but I'll wait! :-)

Is it wrong im laughing because I've twice saw Nina punch Rio in the nose if he gets too close! She isn't overly aggressive but last night she was in the big cardboard box and he went over for a sniff and out of nowhere this paw shot out the box and bobbed him on the nose and he ran for cover.

This morning I gave her a treat whilst he was wolfing down food, she ate it, he came over for a sniff... He got too close and bop in the nose again.

He is certainly wanting to be friends more than her and I can see she isn't comfortable eating whilst he is there which is fair enough, but if I feed them in separate rooms she follows to see what's going on. It could also be the wet food I have just now isn't her fav... I picked up the wrong one by mistake. She is eating biscuits and treats so I'll nip to shops later and get her fav and see if she will eat somewhere lol! I don't particularly fancy feeding them in closed separate rooms forever but if I have to I have to! :-/

Oh dear people we have had a bit of regression from Rio.

My boyf has came from London for the weekend. He is cat daft too but I expected there to be some reaction from Rio but hoped it wouldn't be too severe.

Well he hasnt came out from under the bed. Will sometimes come over for a stroke under the bed but I'm back to having to feed him under the bed!

Worse of all I got up this morning and whilst I'm used to him hiding behind the couch if I'm walking about he has got himself behind the TV unit - he could t climb back up so I had to move furniture to get him out.

I know it's a reaction to a new person being here but I just hope all the good work isn't undone permanently :-(

Definately a reaction to a new person and could set you back miles, hopefully once the visitor has left he will gradually regain his confidence.

Some cats are permantly like this, my big Misa being one  case.

He will run and hide if anyone comes into the house or the doorbell rings but as soon as they have left and he is sure he is back out of hiding again, he especially hates men because of the abuse he received when young.

Sasa just hides!

Oh dear! He has been slightly better this morning, he still allows strokes under the bed and allows boyf to strike him.

He actually also climbed out from behind the video player for a second time practically out onto me. He is just so scared of the unknown and was literally shaking and trembling when he could hear a noise coming from the hall until he saw what it was.

Boyf away tomorrow so fingers crossed tomorrow night we have a bit normality return :-)

Thanks again for all your continued advice xxx

It's good that he's allowing your BF to stroke him. I think he's making excellent progress and I bet he'll be back to where he was in a day or two  :Luv2:

He's already come a long way and I'm sure he'll get braver as time passes. It's amazing how they can come on. For a long time after he joined us, our Munchkin used to hide under the chair when our weekly Tesco delivery came (and wouldn't come out until everything had been put away and all the nasty, crackly, bags had gone into the cupboard) but these days he runs to the door as soon as the bell rings to see what's going on (and in the hope that the Tesco man will make a fuss of him). He also 'supervises' the unpacking of the shopping (i.e: climbs in the bags, bats things around, lies on the kitchen surfaces in order to block the cupboards, etc). I would never have thought it possible a couple of years ago.

I wouldn't be too disheartened, going on how he was when he first arrived I think it's only to be expected that he would hide from a 'stranger' - he doesn't know that your OH is his new 'Dad to be' or 'Uncle'!  :naughty:

He is gradually coming out of his shell and think you are gonna have a major snuggler  ;D ;D

His life at the other place must have been very bad for him and suspect he got walked on and all those running feet were a nightmare.

Thank you everyone! Him and Nina are currently charging about the house. He seems to be getting less and less jumpy which is great :-)

:evillaugh:  This is just lovely.  Bless him - he's gone from hiding under the bed, to romping with Nina and clambering up on the sofa to be with you in a very short space of time for a cat with such issues

I know it's amazing!!

He also isn't as dumb as I thought... Last night I'm lying in bed, they two are running about and next thing he stands on his hind legs against the bedroom door and closes it on Nina then ran under the bed! I was hysterical with laughter at that effort!

He is always out for meal times now which is great. Still under the bed a lot too and can't deal with me walking about but it will come in time. He is more and more settled everyday and getting him was the best idea :-)

It's amazing! I can't believe it to be honest.

Slightly concerned him and Nina seem to be running at each others all hours of the day. No hissing and it doesn't seem aggressive but she swipes sometimes and I worry they are challenging each other! Early days I know :-)

Well well well just had to give one last update! Not only have I now got a boy who follows me everywhere now, sits on my lap and needs to know what I'm up to all the time.... But but but tonight I thought he was biting nina when he walked up to her then I realised he was GROOMING her!!!

I'm stunned - it might have taken over three weeks but actually when I think of him then and now im sure it's a different cat!!!

OMG that's fantastic .... i think it's safe to say he has well and truly settled in.  I still can't get over the huge tufts on his ears (are you sure he's not part Lynx lol).
