Title: Hello!
Post by: Susan + 8 on July 15, 2010, 15:24:03 PM
Hi All,

Just wanted to introduce myself!   :)

I have 4 cats and 2 kittens...

It all started with Lady and her kitten Minnie, who I adopted from an animal shelter. Sadly Minnie was really poorly and died when she was nine months old, and poor Lady, who has never been an only cat, was devastated to find herself on her own.

Lady:

So that led to Casper and Posy coming to stay. Brother and sister, I originally went to collect just Posy but came away with both of them...as you do!

Posy:

Casper:

Then I became aware of a colony of feral cats at the top of my street. I have slowly been catching them and handing them over to a wonderful charity in the countryside (I live in a city centre) where they are neutered and wormed and allowed to live free in the hills. But, one of the "ferals" that I caught last year quickly let me know that he wasn't actually a feral but a stray living amongst them - he is the friendliest boy in the world! I quickly decided that Figaro, who it turns out is FIV+, could stay with me...so that took the count to 4...

Figaro:

Then, 3 weeks ago, I caught 2 little feral kittens, Annie and Oliver (my two little orphans!). I have tamed them and now can't bear to part with them, so that takes the count to 6!

Annie:

Oliver:

I think I might have to stop now!!   ;)

 :welcome: to Purrs   ;D

Glad you've found us, I'm sure you'll enjoy it here.  It really is a very friendly forum with lots of friendly helpful advice, if ever needed, and of course lots of fun.

I do feel it my public duty to warn you though that it can be a teensy bit addictive  You have been warned  :evillaugh:

You have a gorgeous furry family there  :Luv2:

P.S The good thing about Purrs is that you can amend your username so you can change the number 6 if need be  ;)

Wow, :thanks: for the warm welcomes! I feel right at home  ;D

Helen, you did make me laugh with your comment about changing my user name from "+ 6" to "+7" (or more!)  :lol2:

Angie, I think my other half would leave me if I tried to sneak any more into our furry family!  :stop: Although, he did say no more after Figaro and look what happened there....!  :evillaugh:

Janey, I have managed to catch 4 ferals so far, one of whom went on to have her kittens at a shelter so they will be homed as domestics  :Luv: plus Figaro my beautiful stray and not forgetting of course my two newest arrivals Annie and Oliver, who are such purring bundles of fluff that I've kind of forgotten that they were born ferals (I think they have too!)  :Luv2: That's 7 in total, but there's still a few more to go  :crossed:

Claire, Figaro is my only FIV and I was SO upset when he tested positive as I thought I would have to give him up  :( Thankfully the lady who runs the animal rescue that takes my ferals calmed me down and explained the facts to me and Figaro is now a very loved member or my clan  :Luv:

Christine and Sam, thanks for the welcome, I can't wait to join in the fun!   ;D

Thanks everyone!

Susan  :Bye: (for now!)

I'm so pleased to hear that, so many people don't know enough about FIV, am glad the rescue you deal with are switched on in this regard, as Figaro has an amazing life ahead of him with you and your clan  ;D :Luv2:

Half of her animal rescue is dedicated to FIV+ ferals who no-one else will touch - she's an amazing lady :)  My vet on the other hand tried to tell me that FIV can be spread by sharing food bowls  :censored:

Thanks, I think they're beautiful too!!  ;D

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is a virus that depletes the number of white blood cells, which eventually makes the cat less able to fight off infection. It is a slow acting virus and many FIV cats can enjoy a normal lifespan with no apparent health problems. It can only be transmitted to cats. Humans, dogs, rabbits and other animals cannot get FIV. Because it belongs to the same group as Human Immunodeficiency Virus, it is sometimes known wrongly as Feline Aids. The virus is found in the blood and saliva of infected cats, and cannot survive for long outside of the body. It also requires a high dose of the virus to infect another cat. The main way it can spread is from deep penetrating bites, when the virus in the saliva is transmitted to the blood of the cat which has been bitten. Figaro is fine though, and you'd never know he had anything wrong with him to look at him  :Luv2:

Thanks Ruth  :) I left the pen up for a few days after socialising Annie and Oliver with my other cats, just in case they wanted to retreat somewhere "safe" for a sleep...and found Annie sound asleep ON TOP of it   :Luv:  :Luv2:  :Luv:  :Luv2: Bless! She prefers my pillow now, and the back of the sofa  :Luv:

Meant to mention Figaro is a fine looking boy.  Image of our Gandolf  :Luv: (sadly RIP but aged 18/19 when he left us in 2006 )

I've started to wonder if my little group is missing a tabby....  :evillaugh:  :innocent:

What about a little black one too?  ;)  We is missing a ginga, a grey/blue, a tortie, NFC  :innocent:  etc etc etc  :evillaugh:

This is our lot Susan   :)  http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php/topic,33282.0.html

Thanks Rosella, I'm so proud of Figaro. He was skin and bones when I first took him in, and scared of his own shadow. Now is he is a big study boy with a gruff little purr that melts my heart  :Luv: Sorry to hear you lost your Gandolf, but what a good age he was - he must have had a lovely pampered life with you  I hope he's sleeping peacefully.

The cat that started off my obsession with all cats was my black boy Sooty. I had him as a child and he got 15 good years before dementia and arthritis got him  :(  I still miss my Soots - he's the only black cat for me....however now you mention it, I also don't have a ginger kitty...or a tortie...  ;)
