Title: News from Yorkshire Cat Rescue
Post by: SamMewl on November 23, 2012, 11:44:47 AM
I thought i would copy Paws Inn and have modifed this post so to keep HCR news in one place, saves having us all over the forum  :)

we have had our neighbour come round today with a carrier he found open on the edge of his land. the material inside it absolutely soaking wet. i can only hope it was where the last cat we had appearing here came from a couple of weeks ago, as the lovely Ranger is in her new home already. we have left bowls of food out too just in case we have another one.

very annoyed. we have a huge waiting list of cats wanting to come in. bstrds that dump them here, bypass the waiting list - if their lucky or else condemn their cat to trying to survive as a stray somewhere it doesn't know.

Some people are just evil, pure scum  >:( Fingers crossed it was from Ranger and there isn't another lost and frightened soul out there  :(

no sign of any cat so fingers crossed it was where Ranger appeared from.

This is Rebecca and Gem who where dumped here ealier this year, I walked straight past the box as cardboard was being burnt and i just assumed it was waiting to be burnt. the box was clawed open and in it was one kitten (so glad that it wasn't just slung on the fire  :scared: ). later the Mum started coming down and a work experience student rebecca managed to catch her. They went straight to foster - a child minder with a huge resource of potential adopters! They will be going together to their new homw next week.

Think Rebecca might be a grand-daughter of my Leroy (b and w gent next to my name) -same cute scary eyes (and leroy wasn't nuetered until he arrived here at 15 years old!!)

What a gorgeous pair! :Luv: so pleased they have found a home together, and so quickly too :) As for the scum that dumped them, can only hope that karma exists!

they are aren't they.

SUPER day rehoming today. 3 adults rehomed 2 adults reserved and 5 kittens all in their new homes  ;D
busiest day for months and months (and takings higher then i have ever known for one day - people donating jewellry money and paying double the suggested minimum for  cats  ;D)

..and possibly some very good news to report tomorrow.......

photo is very timid Naevia who came to us as a pregnant semi feral and after many months of flinching when people go near she was starting to really enjoying some fuss ( she still prefers fuss with her back to you still!). she has gone to live with a very nice Zoe.

What a great days work!  :wow:  Naevia is so pretty, I'm so pleased that someone gave her a chance  :) Do you stop homing in the run up to Xmas to stop impulse 'Xmas pressie' adoptions or do you go on a case by case basis?

What a wonderful idea SamMewl.  Hope the recent run of homing success continues.

yes more gone again this weekend  :wow:
we home throughout the holidays as actually for a lot of people is a good time to get a cat as they have the time for it as they are off work. for anyone wanting kittens as presents or who have kids we ask them to come after christmas as its less stressful for the kittens and stops the possibility of impulse buying, we try and underline with the parents and children that it is not a toy and needs special care for very many years.

the good news didn't happen....someone was intested in Penny..and then changed their mind  :'(

Great news for the lucky ones that got a home this weekend  ;D Just a shame it wasn't Penny  :( Sounds like a sensible approach towards rehoming at Xmas time  :)

We are still doing well on the homing front although I have four punture holes in both legs today

we have a (cross) bengal cross in. he came in because he was being aggressive, his owner had him locked in a bathroom as she was scared of him, in fact i was so worried about him being locked in one room for months that i let her jump the queue. she didn't take our advice and get him neutred and i think the whole experience (he was shut alone in a shower room for about 4 months) has really not helped with what is a difficult cat. he is really affectionate but gets a bit hyper, 'chuffing' and puffing when he ses you. the last time i fed him i was in a rush and he lept on my departing leg and bit ...hard. i tried to sit in with him a while today and give him some more toys to try and calm him down and again he was really affectionate, until i turned round then woosh, clamped onto my other leg. ouch. i think he is trying to get me to stay, as he only attacks when you leave, but its really serious biting. i think its not so uncommon with some bengals but he is going to be hard work. can't help feeling abit nervous going in with him and don't want to let the volunteers in with him in case they get hurt. he is not making it easy for us.

looks like i have a really nice home for our feral Monique to go to though. someone wants a mouser and has a heated barn to offer her! she has been miserable here so i am hoping to see her off this weekend.

Poor boy being locked in a shower room  :'( Do you think Zyklene would help him at all? My Lu does similar when you're rubbing his tummy on the stairs and try to take your arm away but he's so gentle he grabs my hand very firmly with both paws (but no claws) and then gently 'mouths' me - sounds like Mr Cross hasn't mastered the 'gently' part of getting you to stay! Hope your legs aren't too sore :care:

Great news for Monique and in case others haven't seen the news elsewhere... Penny has a home of her own  :wow:

Oh dear, 4 months locked away alone, sad tale I'm not surprised you let her jump the queue.
You need some chaps or gaitors to protect your legs, pet. Then you can carry on as if he hadn't attacked and maybe he'll tire of it eventually. Poor thing, he reminds me of Kitty and the damage she did to mine and my OH's legs, but her outburst was a one off and psychotic. Hope you have some dettol handy  :(

http://www.mountainwarehouse.com/search.aspx?k=gaiters&n=16&lp=&hp=&cl=&sz=Large%20/%20X-Large&ct=

Great news about the feral.  ;D How do you go about re-homing a farm cat, though? Do you have to keep them indoors first for a few days till they get the hang of "you" before going outside?

Theo chuffs and puffs when his leg is playing him up (he was an RTA which broke his leg and left him with a fair bit of pain for which he's on metacam when required).

I wonder if this lad has pain which is causing his anger?

If you have Metacam, it might be worth trying once to see if he responds well for 24 hours? I'm sure you know the dosages, Sam  ;)

Poor boy sounds like he was deprived of attention sort of separation anxiety.  Have you yried giving him a cuddly toy as company for when he is alone, also a bit of rescue remedy in his water might help.  http://www.petplace.com/cats/separation-anxiety-in-cats/page1.aspx

thank you for advice and sympathy.
we have put him on zyclene with a feliway diffuser in the pen and moved him to the pen with the best view to keep him occupied. he does seem a lot calmer. he had is teeth checked when he was neutred but we might send him back just to se if there isn't any problems with pain. i went in today as i am trying not to get too nervous. i love working with ferals but Rory has been the one to un-nerve me.

have orderede the rescue rememdy too sam, its all worth a try.

monique got shipped of to her new heated barn at the weekend  ;D
shiela - for farm cats we advice that they lock the cats inside the outdoor shelter that will be their base, in Moniques case they have wired shut the barn while she settles. then we suggest that they keep them enclosed in the shelter for 2 weeks with the food and water put down in the same place and at the same time if possible. it usually works very well.

photo - Rory, not looking very innocent at all, you monkey!

I was a bit miffed that they were charging so much to vote (and wonder where the money was going....) but the airedale cnetre have raised a lot the past 2 years for the local sue ryder hospise. if we could get them working for us next year we could revamp our pens.

so as a reward for your vote -  honey, a little ginger girl kitten who came in at christmas having a meow  :)

Arrrrgh, I have a weakness for gingers - just too cute! :blow kiss:

You can never have too much publicity, especially with 1000 cats on the waiting list raising awareness for rehoming is crucial - 1000 though, that's just

just found out that the third cat adopted from us has died from anti freeze poisoning this year. poor Barney. so frustrated that all the petitions have done nothing to solve this problem.

at least Barneys people came to us as they had a cat shaped hole to fill and took the lovely Bella home with them

Hi sam bella has settled in so well shes such a lovely girl, our daughter is spoiling her rotten and is starting to believe she is here to stay. Thank you for being so lovely to us, i was so nevrous coming back as was worried no cat could ever compare to barney, and bella is different but thats fine as shes fitted in so well to our family you'd think she was meant to be here

So glad bella has settled in and is friends with your daughter, it was sad to see she was missing Barney still when you were here. I have had a nosey round the forum and its great to see the pics of Bella -thank you! you are obviously being very vigilent and caring for her, the more time she is with you the more you will know and find out about her ways. you will get lots of good advice here about any worries you have about her but remember we're here for you too if you ever want to phone or email  :)

thank you so much for giving her a wonderful home.

We are looking for a home for Haworth Cat, preferably somewhere with a large garden, no dogs and not too many steps (he sometimes finds it hard to see out of his 'eyes'  :evillaugh:

But actually Haworth Cat will remain our mascot (first name Haworth second name Cat), he is where we came from, he's recognisable and he is still in the logo (and there are three of his ...skins hanging in the porch). so he wont be retired any time soon.

new website launched today http://www.yorkshirecatrescue.org/ (http://www.yorkshirecatrescue.org/)
yeah! to our PR trustee who is VERY good at this sort of thing (and everyone else who has been manically tinkering with it)

rory update - our cross bengal has moved into the inside office and is doing much better. we have found out he has a detached retina and can't see properly, which may well have something to do with his occasional agression. he has probably had a head injury in the past  :(

We got the nine cats in that we're living in a shed. They are all actually very friendly and 3 have gone off to new homes already. The oldest one Waffle doesn't look well, he had a lot of teeth out yesterday so I am hoping he will brighten up once he's over that.

we decided to do some emergency posters, we have always suggested to people that they leave details of what cats they have  soemwhere like a fridge as we get a few cats in every year that have been luckily found when their owners have died.

http://www.yorkshirecatrescue.org/death-of-owner-prompts-launch-of-emergency-poster/ (http://www.yorkshirecatrescue.org/death-of-owner-prompts-launch-of-emergency-poster/)

 - has a link to the posters if anyone whats to use them.

The poster is such a great idea  :wow: Hopefully I have another 50 odd yearson this earth yet but I have a section in my will that details what I want to happen to the boys and a chunk of money from my death in service pension grant is set aside to care for them. Mr F has got a new home and I went to see him to explain how to give his meds. His elderly owner sat me down with Fred already settled by her side as she told me about all the cats she has known  :)

We have had our first orphans in, dumped in a carrier with their Mum but the Mum ran away when the people who found the carrier opened it (they opened it in their home but she still managed to escape). Lots of sleepless nights ahead. Sara will be putting up a display window in the Airedale shopping window with zombie power!

murphy is happy in his new home (and he is still HUGE!!), he was snapped up by one of our volunteers. this is him with his new friend Flossie, also one from us.

poorly cats  :(

we have a few poorly cats in at the moment
Tarquin had an abcess behind his eye which was pushing it out (eek -  urrgh) so he has had to have his third eyelid sewn shut and attached to a button. so he is feeling a bit sorry for himself. 2 weeks to wait until its opened back up.

Malcolm came in with a huge lump on his head which has turned out to be a very agressive cancer.   :'( it is however one that hasn't spread so our vet has taken a huge chunk out of him and is hoping ther is a possibility that she has got all the cancer cells. he has now moved into a foster home where he will either recover our get a heap of fuss in his last times. he was a stray before he came to us so will be enjoying some home comforts.

This is Malcolm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8rtlVN_XOQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8rtlVN_XOQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player)

Petal is another kitten with deformed front legs (not the same as Tenzing, speaking of which i have posted a pick of him now in his old thread - tail of two kittens). and she is beautiful. The picture is of her and her mum Poppy. she came from a house with two pregnant cats of which only petal survived, they were probably all inbred. Petal is doing very well.

healing vibes for these guys xx

Malcolm looks very cosy by the radiator there!  :Luv: Hope the op was a success, doesn't bear thinking about what would have happened to him if he hadn't been taken in by YCR  Fingers crossed that the op has sorted out Tarquin's eye problems too, what a fab name!

I understand what you mean about the button now - I was finding it very hard to visualise. I have everything crossed for him to be able to keep his eye.

the x-ray showed that she has bone missing so there is nothing that can be done, although she is coping hugely well.

Sad news
Malcolm the cat with cancer is not well. The cancer has spread and the wound from removing the first tumour hasn't healed. He will be spending another week with his foster Mum who will spoil him and go with him on his last journey. :'(

Thank you, poor Malcolm lost his fight with cancer which had spread into his jaw. I am so glad that he had a foster mum to spoil him and give him a lap to sit on for his last days.

poor Tarquin has lost his eye too, although he is just relieved he is now without collar. i am sure he will be Ok with one-eye and he has been so patient throughout. at least we can start on getting him a home.

Petal has had SO many people wanting to give her a home. we are thinking of kitting out our cats with slings and eye patches as people keep falling for the wonky ones  :)

we did a survey which some of you may be intersted in http://www.yorkshirecatrescue.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/The-Big-Yorkshire-Cat-Rescue-survey-2013.pdf (http://www.yorkshirecatrescue.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/The-Big-Yorkshire-Cat-Rescue-survey-2013.pdf) xx

hello - not been here for a while because it has been CRAZY
We had 13 cats and kittens dumped here. grrrrrrrrrrr  really frustrating as we are overloaded and a super long waiting list. all the cats are OK and after our facebook fans being outraged they came down to apologise.

they left a note that said "we started with one cat and it got out of control...." in a way its been good for us as we have had articles in the local papers and Sara did a small interview on Radio leeds. the point being that cats breed, very quickly and easily. it doesn't matter how much you love them you need to neuter them too.

petal update - the very sweet 'bendy' kitten Petal is living ...in Scotland. we got her a home with another cat with the same condition and now Honey and Petal are playing together in their own special way  ;D

https://www.facebook.com/Ourhappyhoney (https://www.facebook.com/Ourhappyhoney)

one of the Facebook followers of Honey saw Petal on our facebook page and Honey's supporters also helped with Petal's journey up the M1. we don't normally re-home out of our area but it was such a perfect home for Petal we are so glad it worked out. nothing to do with being able to get regular updates on petal oh no  ;)

..and surfaces from a mass of kittens...

we have over 30 kittens on site waiting for homes and nearly 100 in foster homes EEK! its the busiest year ever.

but this family is the one most important to me....because i am there foster 'mum'  ;D
hattie came with her single kitten Nemo (the other kittens had been found by youths and were no more  :'( ). the lady who brought them in wanted them to go to an experienced foster as she was worried that the kitten might be hurt. As hattie and (soon to be called) Nemo were waiting for me to go home a very floppy, kitten only a few days old came in. the kitten had been found next to its dead mother and sibling, it was very thin and deyhratded and had bite marks on its neck. i didn't think it would last the day, it was bottle fed but every time it screamed Hattie screamed back, 'give me the kitten' so we did. She cleaned it up and let him (peter) suckle. One week later we had a call about a kitten found in a skip, as nemo was finding playing with the much younger Peter boring and Hattie was still searching for other kittens we thought we would see how Patrick got along. She started calling to him straight away and cleaned him and also let him suckle. having such a wired and wonderful cat family to go home to has been amazing. Nemo (who is my favourite) is ready to go to a new home. I'm going to miss him.

We are now back in action after being infected by Feline Parvo, we were shut for 2 months so had a bad impact on adoptions although they are leaving us in droves now. The virus,  also known as FEI or panleukopenia is a horrible disease and we lost some kittens to it  :'(

Most survived though and we have now been given the all clear. Little Nemo who i was fostering was one of those to come down with it before it had been identified. My man luckily woke in the night and saw Nemo slipping into a coma so we rushed to the vets, he was very cold and was hunched up. They put him on a warmed drip overnight and thankfully he bounced back. really thought we had lost him..........guess who is still living at my house  :naughty:

my little whippet boy with his drip bandage still on xx

The power of advertising! I challenged our press lady to help Zoe who was our long stay cat who wasn't coping well with being in rescue. So she got her in Your cat magazine http://www.yourcat.co.uk/Your-Cat/long-stay-rescue-gives-up-hope-of-a-new-ho
me.html (http://www.yourcat.co.uk/Your-Cat/long-stay-rescue-gives-up-hope-of-a-new-ho
me.html)

Lots of responses including a lovely family who came down and only wanted to see Zoe
This is what they posted on our facebook page after they took her home
"Zoe:
Well, we expected a challenge with Zoe after we both received a couple of slaps from her at the centre...after exploring our house and having a roll around, she took herself under the dining room table for a few hours to check us out from a distance...by teatime she had decided she wanted to join us in the living room, polished off a saucer full of roast pork and allowed us to stroke her.
By bedtime her shyness had gone completely and she took to following us around the house, chirruping and wrapping herself around our legs.
And sleeping arrangements? Yes, you guessed it - on our bed, slap bang in between us, purring her head off.
It's early days still but the grumpiness we saw at the centre yesterday was gone - we have a sweet, affectionate little cat who seems to be settling in nicely. We are so glad we took her. Thanks to everyone at YCR for looking after her so well before she decided to come and live with us...!"

We have been doing great this year so far for adoptions but it seems the madness is just starting. We have Mum cat and six kittens and three pregnant cats all coming in today to be farmed out to fosterers. YIKES!

We had a collapsed kitten arrive here Wednesday too. Bambam gave us all a big scare but managed to bounce back.  That's him being blurred (he is fast) and still skinny. Such a relief when you take what you think is a dying kitten to the vet and when you go to pick him up the receptionist asks 'is that mad meowing maniac black kitten yours'  ;D

EXCITEMENT HERE YEAH  :wow:
WE HAVE NEW CAT PENS WE HAVE NEW CAT PENS
AND THEY ARE AMAZING !!!!

ok i will stop shouting now but they ARE AMAZING

we got funding from Support Adoption for Pets to redo one of our blocks. its taken a while and we have been looking sadly at a building site this last two months but now its all (nearly) finished and the cats are in.

We always knew the pens would be better but the cats really do prefer them, instead of being in glorified sheds they can see out at all times. No view of neighboring puss cats and its warm and bright and .... ok i'll calm down now  ;D

i know where i will be next winter lying alongside a new friend on that heated floor  ;)

Thought I would share this link to a new story http://yorkshirecatrescue.org/drowning-man-donates-reward-cat-rescue/ (http://yorkshirecatrescue.org/drowning-man-donates-reward-cat-rescue/)

It all happened earlier this year while Arthur was boarding with us as his owners were honeymooning.
Arthur is a very special cat.

Some of you may remember him as a looong time ago he was a 'cat looking for a home' He was a very bedraggled e had to tame him up as he is deaf so couldn't live safely in an outdoor environment. For those of you have got a memory like mine...

We couldn't believe it! The 'boss' came in and said your never going to guess whats happened and you know I don't think I was !!! Its such a lovely story and the couple James and Samantha are really nice people.  ;D

:thanks:

they are SO much better - wish we could afford to do the others. it not only looks good to us the cats really are more chilled in there. Not only is good to have happier cats they are so much easier to re-home too.

Gill is £8 per night, £7 if you bring your own food. If you get lucky an animal care student will brush your hair while your here  ;)

I wish I was closer

Just a chance but do you have room for a terrorized cat that will be PTS at end of month cos charity cant find an owner for her?

She is 6yrs old and scared of all cats.

Please pm me if you could take her cos will have to find the thread again...........its in urgent cats needing homes I think.

Just a video for you to check out. We have had a rush of orphans in so was hoping to get some more hand rear foster carers on board.

As ever at this time of year in a whirl of kittens, including little Pixie below. Born with a cleft lip so had trouble feeding of her Mum, thanks to some supplementary feeding she is now doing really well.  masterclass on making a bit ugly (sorry Pixie) look ADORABLE!

Pixie is beautiful  :Luv: :Luv: :Luv: I hope her cleft lip won't give her any problems feeding when she is older.
And while you are giving her a cuddle from Sue, please add an extra one from me  ;D

I suspect not emmy-lou, but hopefully all will be well for him anyway - Joonyer Officer Ripley  (one of Daisymac's fine brood of feline lovelies) had a cleft palate, and suffered no lasting difficulty - and he's beautiful to boot.   ;)    :Luv2:

Its only her lip so she is not struggling at all. It was only when she was suckling that it caused a problem. It may have to be corrected if she has trouble breathing in later life but we will sort that out then if necessary  :) xx

I was updating our FB page with tears today.

'A tribute to a life well lived.
Some of you may have heard already but we received some very sad news about a super cat that we were all so very glad to have known. Tenzing was recently put to sleep due to complications following surgery to correct problems in his remaining leg. He was born with deformed front legs that needed surgery as they caused him sores as he bounded around, his condition was always going to be a challenge to manage. He charmed everyone who met him and he went to a perfect home where he parked himself firmly in the hearts of the person and cats he went to live with. He will be greatly missed by his owner, our thoughts are with her and our memories of him still shine bright.'

Just wanted to thank the Purrs people (especially Sue) who along with many of our supporters wished Tenzing the best of things so very hard. Thank you xxx

Oh this is heartbreaking news, I'm so very sorry to read of the brave Tensing finally having to let go of life.  :'( It all seems so much more precious when one so little, and so challenged has fought so hard and lived such a bright and happy life despite being dealt the cruelest hand.  :(

Much love and deep deep sympathy to you all   Bless you for giving him his life, and helping him be the shining star he was.  :)

Goodnight little boy, we all loved you very much xx

Oh no.  Am absolutely gutted to hear this.  Poor little lad.

Tenzing my special little boy, you were so precious to so many of us who willed you along, and watched your progress.  You were the bravest of Li'l Soldjas, you really were, and so loved.  Whole now, you run and leap and love your freedom, you hear?  You earned the right, little man.  Night-night sweetheart.  Keep an eye out for MacBeenz MacSquee. xxx

 :thanks:

My cats all fighting over the outside 'castle' as have oprhans screaming their heads off in the lounge :)

Will post here what i just posted on FB as it says it all really.........

Four newborn kittens were dumped at the side of the A62. Taken from their mother after birth and then left to die. This is sadly how some people deal with unwanted pregnancies. Rightly this is very shocking to some people and when their story is heard the response is 'How could someone do that?'.

We don't know either but although these kittens faced a heartless act they have also experienced many acts of kindness too, both big and small.

The person who stopped to look; the policeman who took them to a 24 hour vet; the vets that took them in and the vet nurse that took them home and fed them and kept them warm; the charity (that's us) that took them on; the foster carers (four already!) who have been getting up throughout the day and night to feed and toilet them; our Facebook supporters who have bought Cimicat and feeding bottles for them to feed and microwave pads for them to keep warm.

They have a long way to go and sadly one of them didn't make it. Sleep tight Brienne, we will do our best for your brothers Ghost and Ice and your little sister Alien x x x

Sadly not uncommon, still makes me sad and angry no matter how many times I hear of it. I do hope the remaining kittens thrive with the foster mums and in turn find wonderful homes
Run free little Brienne.
