Okay i couldn't take it any longer and had to email for an update!

Good news

after the treatment for cystitis (sp?) Mags has started using her tray again and is being a good girl!

She is even getting the chance to venture into the garden now and is definitely staying in her new home!

I must agree, the rescue involved with mags should take full responsability and not the fosterer?

I still have one of the caravan cats here and she has to have 2 litter trays. I placed the 1st in the bathroom as she chose to live upstairs and we found she was messing up on the top floor outside sons bedroom door aswell as using litter tray down stairs in bathroom. I moved the litter tray to top floor as though that might be where she prefers it but she still also kept going in bathroom spot, so ended up with 2 litter trays for her.

I am glad they have taken her to vets and hope it is something thats treatable and helps her.

have to say we take ours to the vet for this to be done as isolating some of ours is to traumatic for them and some folks don't want to have to put the crystals in the litter tray and they take sample to vet

It may be very easy to test a urine sample Desley but I remember alor about you yourself having an awful lot of trouble collecting one, cystitis is a painful and uncomfortable condition so I always feel that time is of the essence in order to help alleviate the cat from such discomfort, if that means expressing the bladder or using a needle to extract it then so be it.

I paid £8 a month for Toms Cystaid, I can't remember the online price though, jsut that I didn't want 250 tablets. Not all vets use it though, but worth asking.

Any online pharmacy Dawn, vet uk etc, you have to buy a full tub but it works out much cheaper than getting 2 weeks supply from the vet

Liz - while that is generally true, it is very easy to test a urine sample, they can collect a urine sample themselves from home, she doesn't need to go to the vet, all they need is a bag of Katkor. One from the bladder can be better, but as others have proved, sedation isnt always needed - Tom was only sedated once, and I suspect that was a lazy vet, as my vets had him there all day and got a urine sample without even using a needle, never mind sedation. By not even having a sample, they dont know if they are using the right antibiotics, or whether it is crystals and not cystitis, in which case they need a different approach. I am also surprised they haven't been told to change her diet - dry food only makes cats more prone to urinary issues, my vet bans it completely until they are completly free of cystitis, and I have to limit it in cats that are prone to it. If urinary issues are proved, Cystaid could also be a big help, as it helps soothe the lining of the bladder.

The majority of time cystitis isnt caused by bacteria anyway so antibiotics arent needed, its often a combination of several factors like stress, feeding dry food, inactivity.

Max had urine extracted last time he had his bloods done too, I coudn't get a sample and we really wanted to test it alongside his usual results for his kidney function etc. No sedation necessary for him

I echo Christine's comments about Blip. Lexy has had urine drawn by needle twice and all done without sedation (and for Lexy you have to know that's something!)

For info, Blip had urine drawn from her bladder without sedation some years ago and was totally stoical about it: not so much as a miaow. She didn't have a sensitive bladder though.

True liz but there are other ways to collect urine without sedating a cat as many members can confess to, its quicker to sort a problem if you know what you are dealing with. The advice given here that has been passed on has obviously helped as she hasnt yet been returned so i cant see it hurts to offer Dawn more info if she wants it.

Is the test you know of the needle into the bladder test Desley? Or something else?

As far as I know, they feed JWB Lamb and Rice as they asked me what she liked and I told them

she pretty much will eat anything though so not sure if they stuck to that or gave her other things.

Glad they took her to the vet, although I disagree with the vets advice - it is easy to test for cystitis, and you dont know how best to treat it without a urine sample, as sometimes they are resistant to a certain type of ab. What do they feed her?
