Just seen this - wot a brill idea. A bit like the comfy collar thingy. Love the pink hearts

That is one large shaved area - poor Socks. Wonder if she had some clipper burn going on as well. Chelsea had that once after the vets shaved her. Went on for 2 days and we had 2 visits to the vets to see if they could relieve her distress. She was going beserk going for everything and everyone , hyperventilating and getting very very stressed

No wonder she was grumpy poor thing, she's practically bald.

I've never seen seen such a large area shaved for a spay. I know she ended up having 2 ops but even so..... The scar seems higher up and farther forward than I remember as well.

What a monkey but that is quite a big wound. Glad to hear she is eating again though and that she has calmed down a little. That coller looks a lot less scarey than those lampshade jobs and I'm sure she will find it much more comfy. You must be having to kitty sit her full time at the moment.
Well done socks for not removing all the stitches though. Hope the glue is superglue though

This morning Socks was minus her collar and had pulled out 7 of the 9 staples and was looking very pleased with herself

Fortunately the glue seems to be holding so I decided against another trip to the vets, fortunately she is in a somewhat better mood so we are now running clinical trials on the collars:

The MK1 version (parcel tape tubes) was a complete fail as her head was too big to fit through the centre.
The MK2 version has been modified (several times

) it has now passed the first series of tests (nice tight fit, can't quite reach the wound but can just about reach her rear end for cleaning and also improved spacial awareness) and is now entering the next phase of testing.

So far its looking good but Socks is still inclined to perform abrupt reverse manoeuvres in the hope that it will come off! if all goes well stage 3 involves her going through the night without removing it.

Here she is sporting the MK 2 'naughty kitty collar', don't worry I am not taking advantage of her, she is being paid with Dreamies and Tuna for taking part in these highly scientific clinical trials.

A full report will be posted at the end of testing tommorow, (unless it fails in which case I will be keeping a very low profile

It's about 2 inches long which I know dosn't sound much, but the original wound was only tiny, the vet said they removed the surrounding tissue as she had been licking at it she also has antibiotics to look forward to tomorrow so I'd better arm myself with gardening gloves for that!
On a brighter note after an evening in the crate she still has her Elizabethan collar and her staples as the makeshift harness that I attached to it appears to be working, she has had a few dreamies and a bit of tuna but is still looking cross (as well she might!).
The kittens want to know where mum is, she can hear them but is pretending she can't!

I think the anaesthetic makes them very confused and not quite in control. Certainly I was very worried that Callie wouldn't eat after her op. It took several days to get her going again and I had to crate here so Monty didn't bother her. I found the posh cat food like Petit pate was good for tempting her and also trying to keep to a normal routine. I even gave her a very gentle play to keep her interest. Just a little mouse on a string and it perked her up. She slept in the crate for two days though.
I hope Socks rallies round soon. I'm sure she will once she starts to feel better. That is a lot of staples poor wee mite. Callie had 2! I took them out myself to save the vet trip as it is 2hrs round trip. It was very easy.

Somehow this topic got locked, so have unlocked it.

So pleased they have glued and stapled her and once she calms down she may not need a collar.

I feel so sorry for her and for you and I was gonna get Pussy glued to stop her needing a collar and agree with Michelle.

This vet seems far too casual in my umble opinion.

No wonder cats learn to be scared of carriers that take them to vets and as far as vets are concerned she will probably be scared for rest of her life.......so sad

Aww poor Socks. No advice I'm afraid as I've never had a female cat and when Mosi had to have his tummy cut open as a babe, the vet said he might need a collar if he worried at his stitches but he didn't. I hope she calms down and you get the chance to try out your inventions!

As to naughtiness - do you think she's been learning from Eenie?!

It seems I now have a feral on my hands

Socks has a huge scar, 9 staples and has been glued as well, she came out of the carrier hissing, spitting and biting. there is no way I am going to attempt to fit one of my inventions as at least it makes it harder for her to bite me.

She now has a makeshift strap round her middle looped through the collar between her shoulders to hopefully make it harder to get it off. I have put her in a crate so the kittens can't get her and am hoping she will be in a better mood later.
I just hope she will be able to eat and drink with the collar on, unless she had anything during the night after she got her collar off she may not have eaten or drunk anything since Monday night, the Vet said not to worry, she will eat/drink when she wants to, but worrying is what I do best

Jackie (The Cats Protection League co-ordinator) told me to suggest they glue it this morning, however as she had managed to pull out internal stitches the vet this morning said she couldn't, it's pity they didn't glue her last night instead of using staples.
I use this vets myself and have always found them very good, but I have to say on this occasion I am not impressed. - the first stitching job was poor, leaving a 1cm long length of thread exposed just asking to be pulled, the collar was fitted as an after thought as we were leaving as she was already pulling at the wound.
When we went back for staples last night they put 3 in, one of which was only fixed to one edge of the wound.
You would also think that the vet would have offered an alternative sort of collar as we were experiencing problems with the Elizabethan one, I would think this sort of reaction is quite common and Vets should know how to deal with it - or am I just unlucky?
Socks must think I am a rubbish foster mum.

The vet didn't say that I should but even so I tried to, first I put socks in a crate but she was too distressed and so I had to let her out, she needs someone sat with her at all times or she takes off the collar. After that we tried putting the kittens in a crate and they climbed up the wire and squashed out through a very small space on the top corner

after that i'm afraid I gave up.

The BiteNot collar looks very good, I feel a Blue Peter moment coming on an it looks possible to do a home-made version which I will attempt, the width needs to be 3ins which is exactly the same as the cardboard roll inside a reel of parcel tape, I reckon if I tape 2 or 3 tubes together and attach it to a harness I might be in business.

I'm going to lie in a darkened room for a bit now, at least while madam is at the vets I can get some peace, at this rate she'll be staying there till she's healed up!

Callie was OK so I cannot offer much advice sorry but hope she calms down.
I have seen an alternative type of collar which is like a thick padded foam roll which fits round the neck and stops the animal turning it's head round to lick to wound. Maybe your vet would have this type?

Socks is currently back at the vets being re-sutured under anaesthetic

she was calm when I went to bed last night but this morning the collar was off and the staples out. she has even managed to remove some internal stitching hence the need for her to be knocked out again

I suppose it doesn't help that being a rescue girl she is not used to wearing a collar so this horrible big plastic thing is really upsetting her.
What happened to my goody two shoes kitty? she has well and truely messed up her unblemished behaviour record

Has anyone else had a similar experience - I could really use some tips to help me to keep her collar on.

Socks has been to the vets to be spayed today, my parting words to the vet nurse were "she's a really good girl, she'll give you no trouble...............". How wrong could I be!

Actually her bad behaviour only started when I picked her up at 3.45, she was already tugging at her stitches and hastily had a plastic collar put on her before we left! As soon as we got her out of the basket at home the collar was off, I had to tighten it up so much I thought she would barely be able to breathe but still she struggled and struggled till she got it off, by 6.45pm we were back at the vets for her wound to be stapled as she had pulled her stitches out.

Once back home she was still struggling and managed to get the collar off twice, in the end George had to sit with her to keep her calm and stop her from struggling till she finally went to sleep.
Its twenty years since my last experience of having a cat spayed, and we had all three of our girls done on the same day - I don't remember it being anything like this bad!
Can I have an application form for the Naughty Club please Mosi
