It really is a horrible desease, cant be cured and not really any help for them to ease it off

Poor Seb has deteriorated over night, her breathing has got deeper and her nose is all stuffed up.I've been round to see her and give her a cuddle she managed a purr but looked really poorly.My sister has taken her to the vets now it seems the time has come to end her suffering she is only 7 months old

There is no cure for FIP and sadly the cat will only get worse, also start to loose weight and get depressed. My Mum's just lost a cat to this and it's horrible to see them not being themselves

Hi all sorry i have not updated this thread we're taking every day as it comes with Seb she's gone off her kitten food she's now loving fresh chicken

she's sleeping more during the day but still plays with her toys and loves her cuddles

I am so sorry for Seb, Rolo and their owners -its a heartbreaking disease - i lost one to it around 10 years ago .
Its awful when the fluid builds up too -Bungly had Liver cancer and her tummy filled with Fluid and she was drained and it actually didn''t come back , but i lost her around 6 months later .

I'm really sorry for poor little seb and everyone who loves him as you know our cat rolo also has FIP in the dry form and his chances are not to good either its a heartbreaking disease has your vet talked about draining? and interferon is defo worth a try it gives them around a 30% chance but is slow to take full effect x

Having spoke to my sis i think Seb's disease has progressed slightly her tummy is slightly more bloated than on Monday when she went to the vets

it's so hard to watch the poor mite she plays like there's nothing wrong with her so i only assume she's not suffering yet my sis has to make the decision when to take back to the vets so she doesn't suffer at all, i think every owner who has gone through something like this will know when the time is right.The vet can prolong her life for a few weeks but i personally don't think that is fair it

a vet can write a prescription for it though I hear it can be expensive as are meds when you buy them privately. you may have to badger the vet. i tried with squirt as winn at cat had good things to say about interferon and panleuk. the famvir cost me £70 and i think with interferon its £100 or so.....

i am sorry to hear this, I have had a cat with it too, but my other cat didn't go on to develop it, as Angie says, it isn't contagious in a normal way - they will shed the corona virus which your sis's other cats will pick up, but it depends on their immune system, if it is very good, they will shed it completely, if it is fairly good they will shed it initially but could go on to develop it later in life, if it is poor it will develop into dry FIP, and if it is very poor iw till develop into wet FIP, which is what causes the straw coloured fluid. Unfortunately wet FIP tends to act very quickly, it is up to your sister whether she thinks Seb has a good quality of life at the moment, some people have used Interferon, but I have only heard of it being successful with dry FIP, although someone on here has just started it with a cat with what sounds like wet FIP.

Thanks Angie that's reassuring the vet took a sample of the fluid on her tummy it was straw coloured apparently,i will let you all know the outcome of the tests when we hear

FIP is not contagious so tell your sister not to be too worried.
it is caused by a mutation in the coronavirus within the cat and only happens in a small percent of cats.

there are other causes for a bloated belly, the vet is telling you the worst outcome.

my kitten Boycie, who had to be pts because of FIP at 5 months, was actually washed regularly by Trigger, who was the same age - even licking off dried poop

Trigger undoubtedly got the Coronavirus, as he had dreadful diarrhea for weeks, but I did not try to stop it, as it was IMO his body's way of shedding the virus - despite it he stayed healthy, and did not go on to develop FIP

I still wonder if Boycie had not been treated for diarrhea would he too have thrown off the Coronavirus?

I hate FIP, such a bloody terrible thing
Its very hard to diagnose though as there isn't a positive or negative result, just raised titer ( This titer detects the presence of antibodies to the corona virus)

My thoughts are the same as yours Gill it wouldn't be fair to see her suffer she looks absolutely fine at the moment though, the vet has put her on antibiotics as she has a temperature and also some medicinesome medicine too.He also said this morning that she needs more treatment meaning i can only assume prolonging her suffering

A terrible terrible desease and please look at the diagnostic section of link cos it confirms what I thought I rememebered and it can only be diagnosed at post mortum for sure

However what I have heard from rescues and others where their cats were thouight to have it, if it seems as certain as can be then pts is the kindest option because the suffering is very bad. Apparently sometimes it can appear to start getting better but then comes back within days even worse.

I do hope the vet can be as sure as possible as it would be terrible if Seb was allowed to suffer.

Sorry i put this in the wrong section.
The only symptoms Seb has is a very bloated tummy and she went off wet food eating only dry oh and also upset tummy which looking on the internet are all the symptoms of FIP.The vet has taken a sample of blood and a sample of the fluid in her tummy

My sister is distraught she can't stop crying, poor Seb is only 6 months old she also has another 5 cats in the household all house cats and the vet can't be sure if they will contract the disease too

I've moved this to the genral health section as you had put it in FIV which is a different illness to FIP

I don't have any personal experience but from what I have read it's an awful illness
