Title: Please say a prayer for Mum's Cat ....
Post by: Sam (Fussy_Furball) on September 11, 2007, 18:08:04 PM
... I have just had a call from my Mum.  One of her Tonkinese twins, Lucy, has been to the vet today and has been diagnosed with throat cancer  :(  The vet has said there is nothing they can do and Mum and Dad will have to be ready to make "the decision" in the next few weeks.

Lucy and her twin sister Chloe are 14 years old and have NEVER been apart.  The sleep together, eat together and are totally inseparable.  As you can imagine my Mum and Dad are not only worried about how long Lucy has left but also how poor little Chloe will cope without her "shadow" and best friend.

To make matters worse Mum and Dad are due to go on holiday Oct 22nd for 2 weeks.

Please send lots of positive vibes for both these gorgeous little girls.

Aww what a sad situation  :(

I hope Lucy can enjoy the rest of her time and its not too painfull for her.

Hugs for Chloe, I hope she will cope after the parting.

My thoughts are with your mum and dad, it must be devastating "knowing".

(sorry if I'm not making any sense)

so sorry to hear this Sam, I remember when you first posted a pic of them how young i thought they looked  :(

If it is any consolation a member on the laperm site has recently been in a similar situation as she had 2 pedigree cats, both inseparable in their senior years and she lost one, after being extremely worried for her remaining puss it turns out she has got a new lease of life and seems to be reveling in the undivided individual attention.

  for you mum (and dad)

I am so sorry to learn of this.

My daughter has just phoned me to see if I will go to the vets with her tomorrow as she fears her cat Fizzy may need to be gently PTS, it is such a worry.

Sam that is so sad. Poor parents and poor kitties. The timing issue is probably bothering them a lot. If its worth anything, I would be inclined to suggest that as the one goes into the cattery for their holiday, the other goes to the vet. That way the separation will be associated with the cattery, not the home. When they get the surviving twin home the scent of the other will be reduced around the house and she will be going into her home environment with full focus of attention. It may make it easier for her. Though of course, only your parents know the best thing for their babes... :(

Sorry to hear about Lucy, Sam    I hope Lucy's final weeks are comfortable and lots of   for poor Chloe who will lose her sister.  When I lost Magpie, Jaffa was so lost without him (even though they weren't that close) but he did eventually get past that stage.

Thanks BC ... this is very good advice apart from the fact the twins don't go to a cattery ... they have a catsitter (my Mums best friend who lives the other side of the village comes and visits them twice aday for an hour or so each time).

Actually - I agree with blackcat re the separation thing.  When Magpie died, Jaffa wandered around crying and wouldn't let me out of his sight.  This went on for nearly 2 months until xmas came.  I had already planned to take them up to my mum's for xmas as I'd left it too late to book them into the cattery.  When I returned with Jaffa after that trip away he was immediately better and settled when I was in another room etc.  Taking him away from his normal environment seemed to help him.

Oh, well in that case, not sure what to recommend as far as timing is concerned.

I have always, however, found it is much better for the surviving animals to actually see that their housemate is gone. Sounds macabre, but they seem to fret much less if they see the body... Seems that they understand better what is going on and that they will no longer see their friend around. Before I started doing this I have had animals go into extreme decline and/or go missing as they search for the departed one. Since I have done it, they have mourned a couple of days and then got on with life.

Sam, all my thoughts are with your parents, it must be so difficult knowing what's going to happen, if that makes sense

Ela, I truly hope your daughter is mistaken as well, and Fizzy will be OK
