Title: Lola at vets now in oxygen tent. Now in referral clinic-Updated-checkup went well
Post by: Millys Mum on July 20, 2009, 00:20:57 AM
She was fine all day, ate supper and settled on my lap when i noticed her breathing was faster than it should be. I went and checked everyone else to compare and after that short time i could then see her nostrils moving and she was struggling to breathe   :'(
Iv left her there for oxygen and an x ray, have 2 hrs still to go before i can phone  :(

Hes mentioned asthma, heart disease, pneumonia and tumours, i cant take the thought of loosing another so soon  :'( :'(

Positive vibes for Lola.

Our nervous girl sometimes breathes really quickly; it terrifies us and is something we watch out for with her. We think it's a panic attack with her though, she's scared of pretty much everything.

my old girl had a rapid breathing and was told it may be asthma - she's on pred and Corvental-D and been on that for nearly 2 years now.

Title: Re: Lola at vets now in oxygen tent
Post by: Millys Mum on July 20, 2009, 21:03:10 PM
:thanks: iv had a very stressful day  :tired:

I heard from the emergency vet at 2.40 am and he was concerned with her x rays so emailed them to some expert in the USA for their opinion, they were also very concerned and reccomended a biopsy  :scared:
Her xrays were done again before i collected her this morning and they showed a small improvement.
Off to my vets who were also intrigued by her xrays, had no treatments to offer other than referal to Dick White clinic in Newmarket.
Mad dash to work to get everything done in half day and off to Newmarket we go, we were an hour late for the appointment as  :censored: google sent us the wrong way up the M11! Having missed our slot we had a good hour wait as 2 emergencies came in. 5pm by this time  :tired:
Was feeling really guilty at this point for taking her  :(

Finally got seen by a vet who has admitted her for bloods, imaging, chest drain, IV Ab's and possible surgery. Cue the tears in carpark for leaving her behind  :'( :'(

Got a phonecall not long ago saying the xrays they have done are better than this mornings  :) so he feels this could be some kind of allergic response rather than lung/heart failure. Shes having more oxygen therapy and started AB's, so until the morning i wont know anything else.
Its a really lovely clinic, lovely staff, clean and ultra modern  :wow:
The most shocking thing is the clinics quote, 2-3k  :hairrasin: :faint: :faint:

Will she just be staying at the clinic for tomorrow? Will you have to pick her up to take her back to the normal vets?

Shes in for now, im not sure how long for i guess it depends on what their tests show up. I copied some of her notes down so i could look up the words, so many i havnt heard before!

I normally cope ok with things but only when i have planned them lol had very little sleep last night and bish bash bosh its all off, was expecting her to stay in under obs before doing anything drastic, had no change of clothes or any paperwork  :innocent:
Iv had a look at the clinics site and she has 24 hr staff, theres airconditioned accommodation and underfloor heating!

Wow! what a day! and what a worry, its so scarey that they can be fine one minute and then fighting for breath the next. It sounds more hopeful though, that its probably not heart/lung, wonder what could have provoked an allergic response like that? Here's hoping that Lola is feeling much better soon and you can get some answers.

It really scared me last night, she was fine, eating and fly hunting and then really struggling an hour later  :scared:
I have no idea how the allergic response works, i wonder if it could be more immune system then a pollen allergy type reaction, she was in all evening napping so wasnt breathing in any funny dusts etc  :-:

Geezzzzzzzzzz what a day for you and Lola. So pleased she seems to be improving and sending lots of good vibes for Lola

Yes i have thank god but this clinic requires the bill to be settled unlike AHT who when i enquired 2 years ago dealt direct with certain insurers.
Iv just requested a credit increase :wish: so i hope i get it or i will need to transfer savings asap

Hope all goes well and maybe not as expensive as they have said
Title: Re: Lola at vets now in oxygen tent. Updated - now in referral clinic
Post by: Millys Mum on July 20, 2009, 23:37:23 PM
I can kind of understand why they do it, if the insurers wont pay certain bits then they may have trouble getting it out of the owners. I had to pay £200 as a deposit at vets now! I thought the fact they had my cat they would be seeing me again but i know they have had problems with people leaving animals and then not collecting  :(

I hate waiting on telephone calls  :sigh: :yawn 2:

When i took Boy to RVC in Heartfordshire 2 years ago i was given two quote, one just for x-rays , ultrasounds, blood .....and then they said if they do a full biopsy and op it could be up to £2500. Had to sign a form but they didnt take any deposit .
Its comforting to know they have 24 h staff.

Glad the vet is thinking it might be an allergic response rather than heart/liver failure. Hope she has had a good night and you can bring her home today. What a shame the clinic dont deal direct with the insurance company though, the specialist Tiger saw did (but she did say they were constantly owed thousands waiting for the claims to be paid) - there was a clause that if the insurance didn't pay up within 60 days you had to pay.

Phonecall this morning was better (english vet this time who speaks slow enough for me to register info lol)

I now understand that its the pneumothorax that caused her breathing difficulties, the escaped air was putting alot of pressure so she couldnt fill her lungs properly.
They now need to find out what caused the air to leak in the first place, the leak needs time to heal over before they can investigate under a GA so shes staying in to be kept an eye on and another x ray later.
She will have a bronchoscopy done when they are happy the leak is healed or else things are more likely to go wrong once shes under :scared: they will also do a wash for cells to check for infection and will take samples if necessary.

He said she had a good night and externally her breathing now looks normal  ;D fingers crossed the next x ray is better still and she can have her camera work done

Thanks for all your good wishes, think they all helped  :wow:
They did the tests today and she coped well with the GA, came round and breathing still good  ;D

All the escaped air has gone and her x rays showed further improvement. The camera found inflamed bronchi and mucus, the flushes were done to collect the mucus and under the microscope the cells were found to be inflammatory not cancer  :yayyy: :yayyy:  ;D :Luv:

Theres been samples sent off for further testing/checking but hes quite sure this is an inflammatory problem not a sinister one  :)
Shes continuing her antibiotics and started on steroids to help her bronchi out, all being well overnight i should get to pick her up tomorrow  :cheer: :cheer:

She will have to go back after 10-14 days when all the tests are in for follow up x rays and to make sure her meds are appropriate if a particular bacteria is found.

Happy Happy Happy!

So pleased she is OK and home  ;D

If they say its asthma then reckon it was an allergic reaction to something.

I hope she stays fit for ever and ever

glad shes home again.

Have you made any changes in the house to your detergents or cleaning products?
With my old girl I avoid using any cans of stuff like furniture polish just in case and dust with a damp cloth (or sometimes a trowel  :-[)

Steroid munchies are setting in bless her, every dish of food is licked clean and some.

glad shes home again.

I cant think that anything has changed, none of the cats beds/towels are newly washed either. I tend to hoover up as dont like to disturb any dust and the regular used areas are wiped with diluted trigene.
We dont tend to use alot of chemicals, dont use plug in airfresheners or febreeze type things  :-:

The only thing i could try to change is what clay litter i have, shes always used it but that is about all i can think of. Problem with that is Taz has particular needs with his bladder history, things are never straight forward are they!

The vet is very pleased with her progress, x rays are clearer than the last lot  ;D Shes not quite there yet so has to continue with preds and go back in 4-6 weeks for another check and hopefully she will be back to care with my normal vet after that. All her other tests came back clear and he thinks she has low grade asthma, i think as her x rays show thickened lungs it makes his decision harder  :innocent:
