I still think it was a licking lesion. Cats do that sometimes when they're feeling a bit on edge about something. (It can be something pretty small too.) Glad  the fur's growing back. :)

Not sure what the heck is going on, vet said fur would not grow back as the hair folicles had gone said there was little point in a referal. Anyway after 4 months the fur has started to regrow by itself and the bald patch has all but dissapeared. Weird cat  Just wish he'd stop chewing his leg, vet say's its a bit like people chewing their nails...

glad that it's growing back, re the chewing - my sister's cat and one of ours used to chew and pluck fur and our vets said the same it can just be like humans with a habit of biting their nails.

Not an expert but you would think a yeast prob would come out in more than that little area.... The patch does look rather clean though!

I was told with one of mine when I first got him he got cystitis that it was stress related.... Although after the jab he was fine and has never had it again (that was over 2 yrs ago!  ;)

If when your babe was chewing his back leg it cant of been psychological, no jab can stop it if it were!

Hope you get to the bottom of the baldness!  ;)

Oh, well I did think that myself, but thats what the vet said and whatever injection he gave him it worked. Then when Barney had his annual vacinations last year about 2 or 3 weeks later he started chewing his leg again. So had to have another jab, thankfully he stopped.
So if as the vet says this bald patch is a yeast problem would it not be his whole coat that was effected rather than just this localised area?

then I would certainly press for a referral - access to centres of excellence is one of the things insurance is for, I reckon

Yes all of my cats are insured via petplan, although I'm quite happy to pay for treatment should they ever need it.

I would be surprised if your vet refused to refer Barney to a skin specialist - that would be a rather risky attitude

do you have pet insurance?

Is it possible to take an animal to a specialist without a referal? As far as I can see vets are no different than your local GPs, it's impossible for them to know everything. Barney did go through a stage of chewing his left back leg last year for no good reason, vet said it was pyscological gave him a jab of something and he stopped. At the moment I'm not prepared to give any of the cats flea treatments until I get to the bottom of this. When I did press the vet he said it may be a yeast problem but wasn't sure of this. As I see Barney every day it's difficult to say whether it has got any worse than what it was in Novemeber, but now were getting to the 3 month stage nothing seems to have grown back...

I don't want to worry you, but you might like to check out this story

a referral might be a good idea if your own vet does not know what is causing the bald patch

Bald patch

Hi all, my boy Barney has a bald patch between his front shoulder blades, it just started to appear over a a few days back in November, been to the vets a couple of times and was prescribed Surolan. He cannot reach the spot to groom it and I'm not sure what has caused it. But it is the normal area where I would zap him with Advocate although this was last done back in September. Theres no redness or scarring just what looks like normal healthy tissue, he will be 3 May 17th it's between 11/2 to 2inches in diameter. I think it annoys me more than it annoys him. Is this common in cats? None of the others seem to have any problems he eats healthy and drinks plenty. Vet didn't seem to know the cause, just wondering if once bald patch has arrived will the hair eventually grow back?
