Well been to vets today. She is diabetic but not full blown. Gave me insulin and needles home with me(iv a needle phobia eek) showed me how to do it at vets. Im scared doing it but il do whatever it takes. On 1 injection a day so far. I dont know much about diabetes but im hoping insulin will stabilise her and she gets some normality back i.e her normal self

I think the sugar would have to be quite high and then if its diabetes , in a human you would definately be lethargic and eventually go into a coma.

Hope the results come back with no serious problem

Well took cat to vet today with the urine sample. All clear for kidney and liver problems but was a faint sign of sugar. He then done a blood test which i have to go back next thursday for the results. All few bad teeth that need sorted out. About the sugar he says cats sugar levels go up due to stress( surely thats not a reason why shes lethargic) but anyway be next week till i find out more

I Would definately get Bloods done, as others have said as well as detecting Kidney issues it is also a good way of
keeping track of Her Health, If Kidney Problems are caught early enough, they can still Live a full happy life with Meds
please refrain from reading the net for answers, as I found out it just causes anguish  :scared:

One of my youngsters (almost 9 months  :( ) also has gingivitis and currently on ABs (stormogyl?).  He didn't even bother to suggest I bring her back in for check up as he knows I will.  I don't think gingivitus at age 12 is that unusual so I wouldn't be overly concerned yet.  Just try and be patient and see how she responds to ABs and dental; so much easier said than done of course

Vet said she had gingivitis and would take her in soon for plague removal.

Took her to vet last week and vet says she has dental issues
..... i go back wednesday with a urine sample.

Did vet elaborate on "dental issues" and what is urine sample being tested for?  Perhaps vet wants to clear existing infection before suggesting other tests or dental work.  The fact that her appetite is good and she is drinking less is a good sign.

I agree, full bloods and then a dental if healthy enough, teeth problems can painful and cause other issues and it's better to get them sorted long term rather than giving abs if possible

I would certainly insist on running bloodworks as well, testing organ function (particularly kidney), and possibly for thyroid as well.

I noticed by boy Max drinking more a couple of years ago and his kidney levels were slightly elevated, it was caught early which was helpful in treating the problem.

Its about £80 for full bloods, depending on your vet, but its definitely worth the money to find out if there are any underlying issues

I think your vet should be taking blood tests because of all the drinking, its a sign of kidney problems and other things.

Insist if you have to

Worried about my 12yr old cat
« Reply #1 on: August 08, 2009, 00:24:15 AM »
My cat has gone from playful to lethargic in days. She started drinking lots of water, breath was bad and looking on the net scared me with all the horror stories about kidney disease and diabetes. Took her to vet last week and vet says she has dental issues but although worried by the drinking lots of water she looks completely healthy and weight is perfect maybe its just an infection. Shes on antibiotics for her mouth and i go back wednesday with a urine sample. She does look brighter and not drinkin so much and good appetite. Am sorry for warbling on a bit but just like to ask if anyone had simular probs with a cat and what happened? I would be devestated if i lost her
