I took Bambi to the vets for her post op check up, the vet said she seems fine and all cats are individual in terms of how quickly they are back on there feet, she was given another pain killing injection to help ease any pain she might have and is now home happily, she has been much more awake today and has gone a toilet so I am happy.

She is also pleased as it is her birthday I bought her the panic mouse and another scratching post so all is well at the moment, so hopefully when we go back a week on saturday to have her stitches removed she will be completely back to normal.

Good morning,

So sorry about all the trauma that you have had.  Parrot took a little time to recover after being spayed but it did not affect Cody at all he just bounced back, it definitely takes longer for female cats than males.  Good luck at the Vet today.

Has their been any improvement yet?

I think a vet check is a good idea but cats, like people, are individuals and some take longer to recover than others.  Best of luck and keep us updated.

Ok, I am a bit concerned about Bambi again, the first day I brought her home (wednesday) after the op she was sleepy as expected but in the first hour she wouldnt settle once she did she has literally not moved since (except maybe to stretch and then lay back down again), so ever since very early Thursday morning till now (currently 3am on Friday morning) she has not moved I have had to bring her food and water to her, she has not gone a toilet since she got home and I am starting to worry as I hear so many people say there cat was mad again by the next day, so I am a bit concerned, any advice?

I have booked an appointment to see the vet today (Friday at around 11am) so hopefully everything will be fine.

Must admit I would have panicked just like you and would be going through all the same emotions

If the vets have done the op and say she is Ok, then she should be and I am sure when you collect her , apart from being a bit miserable and drowsy, she will be fine.

B***** vets why didn't he contact the specialist first before putting you in a panic?  Anyway I am sure she will be fine.

its a very routine op and if your specialist is happy with it I would have thought there was much your local vet could do wrong - don't worry hun, perhaps give them a ring soon just to see what stage they are at

Thanks for the support. I have had one of those days today, I dropped bambi off (left all worried but kept saying to myself she will be fine), I then went to the doctors only for a 45minute wait, I then went for a quick shop around Tesco, and while I was there my mobile rang (PANIC, PANIC) they said they would ring my mobile in case of emergency, it was the vets! The vets explained that they REFUSED to operate on Bambi saying that it was extremely risking because of her steroids, I was so blown back in complete shock, why would they let me pre book this operation to review her medical history on the day (and only because I ask, just to refresh there memory!).

Being honest I was totally shocked, as the specialist vet at dick white referrals keeps in touch with me every month to ensure Bambi condition is remaining well (regarding the diarrhea) I emailed him a week before her appointment to be spayed and checked about the medication (if I was to reduce it or not) and he said no keep her on that dose. So you can imagine what I am thinking WHAT? WHY? I was so confused to say the least, I told my vet to call Dick White referrals as he is the specialist and he said the operation would be find under the steriods, so he said ok. I then called the specialist before he could get a chance lol because I just could not sit around doing nothing I had to find out what was going on! The specialist at dick white referrals said he did not know what the problem was and why my vet was making such a fuss as it is slightly riskier but refusing to spay her all together! So he said he would talk to the vet, 10 minutes later I get a phone call off of my local vet saying he has spoken to the specialist and is happy to do the procedure. WHAT? I mean I am not being funny but one minute he is panicing saying he refuses to operate on her and the next he is happy to do it? I know perhaps the specialist made him realise the risks are small but you can imagine I am sitting they thinking do I go with my gut instinct and go collect her and not let any of them near my baby or do I trust them and let them go through with it?

They told me I could have the surgery done at Dick White referrals (as there specialists so equipment/standards and vets in general are far better) but the price tag is £800 which will not be covered by my insurance so as I student I had to say no, I can not afford it...I did not know what to do to be honest I had been started half to death with "I refuse to operate it is far to risky" and then "I am happy to do it" maybe I am over reacting but going from one end of the scale to the other was a complete wave of different emotions. I had to make a decision so I alllowed her to be spayed at the local vets, I am so worried about her now, I still have not got a call saying she is ok, I feel like maybe I made the wrong decision. But on the other hand she did need to be spayed because of all the benefits.

Did I make the wrong decision???? A very worried mummy.

They're right, she should be fine  I can remember when we took our first, Penny and I was so worried not knowing what to expect but we brought her home and although she looked alarming with her side all shaved she jumped straight up onto the ironing board! I think I was far worse than her.  Since then I've trapped and had many ferals spayed/neutered and they have all been fine.

I've only had one of mine since kitten hood but when she was spayed she was up and about and shouting her mouth off while the vn was on the phone telling me the op was done!  they seem to bounce back very quickly, I'm sure the vn will be able to tell you if you need to do anything special

I understand your concerns but I am sure she will be fine.  None of my furries have had a problem when they have been speyed.  A little drunk perhaps but once they've slept it off they were back to their normal mischevious selves.  As MM says nice warm bed, some chicken or fish will make her feel much better.  Just be careful if you pick her up to watch where you touch  :Luv:

Bambi Is Being Spayed...
« Reply #1 on: January 14, 2009, 02:42:23 AM »
So I am sitting here at 2.32am I can not sleep as I am too worried about Bambi's operation tomorrow, she is being spayed which I understand is considered a minor procedure, but for those of you who have read posts about Bambi before and understand her background as she is unusally small (kitten size infact) due to her condition, which makes me moddy coddle her like god knows what, which is why I am so worried as I am not sure if this will increase her risks of something going wrong. Anyway, I am worried for her, I have to take her in at 9am tomorrow (or today even lol), so panic stations from then on...

I can imagine it now picking her up after with a disgusted look on her face saying 'you left me here!', awww I will have to make it up to her even more than usual as it is her 1st birthday this friday as well, so spoilt rotten kitty will need more pampering lol...

Anyway if anyone has any suggestions of what I should do to make sure she recovers as best as possible when she returns home would be greatly appreciated.
