Title: Advice please. Putting nervous cat into cattery.
Post by: Lesley Frankie on February 20, 2015, 15:14:33 PM
hello, I am looking for advice. I have 3 male indoor / outdoor cats. Basil has cardiomyopathy - the left side of his heart is enlarged but he is not showing any symptoms yet. The vet has prescribed half a  Nelio 5mg pill daily.  The other 2 are healthy. Up until now, we have someone come to the house daily to feed and clean up after them when we go on vacation but she is leaving the area.  I did put them into a cattery several years ago but I felt that this was particularly stressful for Basil. Apparently he spent the week hiding under a bed.  So ideally I would like to find another cat-sitter. However, if this is not possible, is there anything I can give Basil to help him stay calm while in the cattery? We only go away for a week at a time but I really worry about his heart when he is stressed.

I would speak to your vet or your local cat protection branch, they may know of someone qualified/pet sitter who would come and see to them daily, a lot of vet nurses do it in their spare time? our vet has a few cards in the surgery for pet sitters.

This stuff is very good .... http://www.petremedy.co.uk/  if you could get the cattery to put a plug in in Basil's area it should calm him.

Hi Rumletum,

I'm a fan of home visits too, only ever use a cattery when there's absolutely no option and then only for the cats who are adaptable.

I'm currently discussing options with these folk:

You might find a similar company in your area? :luck:

Personally I wouldnt use a cattery cos likely to not help him and he is very vunerable.

Also personally I wouldnt go away!

Hello again,  thank you for all of your suggestions. I live in France so it is not quite so easy to find sitters as it may be in the UK. Cats here tend to be left to their own devices more than in the UK.  However, I do have a friend who lives not too far away who will help if all else fails. Likewise I have made contact with an English lady who lives even closer and is willing to help. In the long-term I am hoping to persuade my neighbour to do it although she is not used to animals - other than my lot rambling through her garden and sleeping on the outdoor chairs!  I will make a convert of her supposing it kills her :sneaky:

I like the idea of the herbal diffuser and will try to pick one up when I am in the UK next month.

Thanks again for all of your help.
