Title: Kittens/cats ears
Post by: Jules_s on April 04, 2007, 22:37:42 PM
Major newbie here

My partner is shortly going to 'adopt/majorly love' a kitten....

He is quite a pedigree variety...and he wont be cheap.

Personally I couldn't care less if he was a moggie/stray...but he seems to have split ears at the lower end of his ears.

Is that a problem?

Thanks for advice in advance  :sneaky:

Hi Jules  :welcome: to Purrs.

Congrats to your partner on his pending furbaby :)

When you say split ears do you mean that pocket/flap thing near the base?  As far as I know all cats have that litle flap.  No idea what it does but probably something to do with the range of movement.

not quite sure what you mean but all/most cats have a bit on the edge of their ears (on the outside edge) that seems to split a wee bit..it has a proper name...something pockets (cant for the life of me remember the exact name)

could this be what you mean or does this kitten look as if it has had injured ears ?

It's my woman/ partners cat/kitten.

The kitten we are getting is absolutley gorgeous....he's a silver bengal leopard.

Just a bit worried about his ears  :scared:

No, the frilly bit at the base of the ear (bursa) is there to help the cat move its ears about freely. Comes as standard whether mog or ped.  ;)

Enjoy your new kit!  :Luv:

Awwww!  What a cutie!  Is that little "nick" in the ear what you were referring to?  If so, it looks perfectly normal to me.  If you're worried ask the breeder about it.

How old is she in that pic - she looks so small and cute!

There are a few people on here with bengals - Bengalbabe (Linda) has 3!  ;D

He's lovely jules, when do you get him home ?

We got his papers and paid for him on sunday....he comes 'home' to our house on the 20th of May (he's only 7 weeks at the mo)

we also have a 10 day holiday booked in september and I'm already worried about what to do with him  :scared:
Title: Re: Kittens/cats ears
Post by: CurlyCatz on April 10, 2007, 08:57:25 AM
september, well you have loads of time to start finding out and viewing a good cattery.  Word of mouth is often a good way to find one so if you have cat friends ask around, beware though they can book up pretty fast so look into it sooner rather than later.  Unless of course you have someone in the family that could come and cat sit for you ?  I'd say for a kitten and 10 days you need fairly decent arrangements ie for a day or two its fine to get someone to swing in past for a wee while too feed/clean trays/pet & play  etc but 10days is really too long for that.  Maybe your breeder knows of a reputable cattery.

You did say it was your partners cat didnt you..funny you are the one worrying

Now you see i have a hubby who thinks my red boy is merely "ok" but last night he carried him through to the kitchen to fetch something as cody was on his lap and hubby didnt want to wake him up

he's lovely, you both must be very excited and we look forward to many more pics.

How refreshing it is to hear from you actually buying a pedigree kitten from what sounds like a reputable breeder as you have had to wait and i presume he'll be vaccinated.

If you follow other posts you'll see there has been a run of furbabes from not so nice people lately  :(

He's a stunner  :Luv: :Luv:  Have you 'cat-proofed' your home yet?  I'm proud Mum to two new kittens and believe me, if there is somewhere you don't want them to go they will.  I spent ages blocking up gaps by the fridge etc etc I thought I was cat proofed but how wrong was I !!!

I've had to take the connecting cords out of the blinds, tie the curtains up, hide the washing while it's drying on the airer - you need eyes in the back of your head  :evillaugh:

Can't wait to see more pics of him when he's home  :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:

Yes....

We got him from Mel and Ron at Redgrave Bengals....I intended to look around, but when we saw him it was pretty much 'love at first sight'....he stood out because of his much darker (and impressive) markings.

http://www.redgravebengals.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/1.html (http://www.redgravebengals.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/1.html)

I've never seen such character in a kitten (im not too familiar with the bengal breed) he seems very mature for his age (weeks)......whilst being curious like a kitten should be, he sort of 'investigates' things as opposed to headlong charging in  :Luv:

I guess time will tell when he moves in.

As for getting him later.....I can't help but be a little disappointed if im totally honest. Ive deliberately not visited him since we paid for him (bought is a horrible word when referring to a new family member) and I feel ive missed out on his development into a cat  :(    I didnt visit him beacuase I know I would get frustrated because of not being able to take him home because of this.....

Anyway, this is him.....taken by the breeder. Such great markings, beautiful temperament.....and the biggest/heaviest of the litter  8)

Will get some more pics up when he 'arrives' home

I love the shape of his markings around his shoulder blades/top of front legs.

dont be dissapointed that you have missed out..i know how you feel but leaving them for this long is what all responsible breeders would and have to do.  He has gained so much more being with his mother and siblings for a longer period of time which will stand him in better form not only health wise but esp in behavioural aspects so you're likely to have a far happier well adjusted kitten.

anyway...13 wks out of 16 years or so aint to bad  ;)

His 'tummy' marking are to be believed as well...excuse the 'choke hold' pic...the breeder wanted a pic of them so Debs held his neck back....

He is stunning, I bet you are getting very excited now! Don't worry about missing out on anything, my babe was 10 weeks when I got him and believe me he is still very much a kitten now even though he is nearly 7 months. He is still so much fun and is still learning new things everyday which is great to watch. Helen is absolutely right he will be in to everything, even places you think you have blocked off and watch out for your curtains

Ok oK   :)

We got him yesterday...as expected he was a little distressed, and sat under our bed for a few hours.

Yesterday evening he came downstairs, had a nice meal and befriended Deborah  :Luv: he then had a wander around checking out his new 'home'

Then licked Debs clean and went to sleep...

Such a beautiful animal....

His temperment is absolutely spot on.....he's sat beside me purring now as I type...in fact he's either sleeping or purring  :Luv:

He seems very affectionate.....either grooms himself of one of us, and so far he hasn't missed the litter tray once  :)

Title: Re: Kittens/cats ears
Post by: Jules_s on May 23, 2007, 22:34:34 PM
Well,

He's mental thats for sure...like a usual kitten but more agressive (compared to the two moggies ive had in the past) We accept that given he quite large for his age.

He's definitely come out of his shell...the first couple of days he was confident and loving....and relatively 'quiet' in terms of shouting. He's now pretty vocal (we dont mind that, we were expecting it) but still very loving and attentive when we are around.

It's been a few years since I've been in contact with a kitten, but he is already showing a penchant for climbing anything and everything...we got an 'activity centre' for him before he arrived, and he has already got to the top of that....even though the stages are a good 6" taller than he is

On the plus side......he is only really chatty when he is up and active, he seems to look at things and 'chat'...just to see if he gets a reaction...he hasn't missed the litter tray once in six days, and is happy(ish) being held and is VERY happy being groomed....

So all in all we are very happy  :)

Lol....ive been away all week sorting out the house....was a bit worried he would have forgotten me, but he seems ok this evening  :)

So here you go...one week in...he is still brilliant, still hasn't missed his tray....still a bit vocal and still farts quite a bit after beef. He loves salmon most  :Luv:

Naughty.......

Yay glad we finally got to see lots of pics, i was in heaven..He is soooooooo gorgeous and im very chuffed he has settled in well for you guys.  You look like you were well prepared before his arrival though, lots of lovely bengly toys.

keep the pics coming, we luv em  :Luv

Oh by the way,you might already know but bengals are apparently prone to a more sensitive digestive tract so Re the wind etc it might be a good idea to PM Linda Bengalbabe to discuss that type of issues with her, she has 5 so far LOL (and counting) Might be worth it as 3 of hers got very poorly with digestive probs earlier this year and were on drips etc so i'm sure she'd be more than happy to share valuble info with you.

Yep, totally understand the cooker comment....

He seemed too small to get on the worktops (whilst trying) but a kitchen glove got left on the cooker door which gave him a grippy route up there. We thought it would be nice to have some water and biscuits downstairs in the kitchen, but he has pretty much ignored them so he is now banned from the kitchen unless we are about.

He does like sitting in the kitchen sink and playing with the water though  :shy:

We are feeding him the same food he was fed before we got him....it's cat food not kitten stuff and whilst i make a joke about his flatulence it's not too bad  :Luv:

Do you all think feeding him adult cat food is a good idea? he seems very happy with it...

I'm going to 'force' Deborah to sign up on here....she is very shy, but Teoh is her cat so please treat her gently as she is a little worried having never lived with a cat before and a bit internet shy too boot

 :thanks:

So pleased Teoh has settled  he really is stunning and the pics are wonderful.

With regards to the water thing bengals love water apparently ... i  know Linda used to have a small kiddies paddling pool set up for her boys to play in and they loved getting "wet wet wet"

I think you should definitely get Deborah to come and join us ... we'll be gentle with her.

Hi Deborah.  We're a friendly mad bunch of females with the exception of a couple of gents so feel free to post anytime you want to.  We have all different levels of experience and no matter how experienced or not we may be we have all learned from each other in some way shape or form so we'd love to hear from you.

Your new baby is gorg !!!

Most of our cats start off on kitten food i think, some however progress onto adult food quicker than others for varying reasons.  My cody was around 8 mnths when he went onto adult food and that main reason was that he prefers it.  Providing he is on a good quality food i dont think the adult will do him much harm, he certainly looks as though he's growing well and in veyr good condition.

Re the water play..some of them have got themselves a large, deep ordinary littertray and half fillied that with water with a few "floaty" toys in for their furbabes..I just leave a tap slightly on sometimes for mine (he's so deprived LOL)
Watch yourself at bathtimes though..its a big hazzard with curious water loving felines so please please run cold water into the bath first to avoid horrific injuries...Sorry if thats stating the obvious..lots of advice may be like that on here but what is common sense to one person may not be for the next.

Hi Deborah,

Like Lynn said people put cats onto adult food at different times for different reasons. My little girl had RC adult food from being about 2-3 months old and it's done her no harm equally my boy and other girl only had adult food from being about 15 months old and they are fine too.

Everyone on here is really friendly and people have such a wide variety of 'specialist subjects' that whatever question you ask someone will always know the answer or will know someone else who'll know the answer and if you are having a crisis someone will always help ;D   Linda will be able to give you loads of advice about your Bengly.

A deep litter tray filled with water and some kids wind up bath toys (about 95p each from Tesco, the frog is the favourite of my mob) and ping pong balls are essential for water loving cats. Put it in the bath or in an outside run or your floor will get flooded

Your Bengly baby is stunning, really love his colour and markings  ;D

Thank you so much for the advice. I will be very careful whilst running a bath. No more bubble bath either for me  :)
Teoh has already had a paddle in his drinks bowl, the kitchen sink and is intrigued by the shower so really love your idea of a water tray with toys especially for him  :Luv:

Looking forward to seeing the waterbabe piccys.. :evillaugh:

No need to stop the bubble bath, that wouldnt harm teoh if he did take a dive but the hot water warning is close to my heart, i am a vn altho not working just now (kids eh) and had to treat a poor 5 month puss that fell inot scalding hot bath with no cold water so i am very quick to dish out that advice  ;)

You new baby is so handsome and we're very glad to have all 3 of you onboard.

Oh Lynn that must have been awful for you and kitty cat falling into the hot water :( do hope all is well now and no long term damage has occured  :'(

Thank you for the advice on bubble bath, wasn't sure if it would be bad for his fur... So, if its luke warm then Teoh may enjoy smelling of Jean Paul Gaultier bubbles then... I wonder...  ;)

I promise to send you water baby piccies when he has his own pool. The house is like 'Teoh Tiger Towers' now. It is all his and he knows it even has his own bedroom full of bengalie toys  :Luv:

i bet he'd be even more delicious smelling of that LOL.  (does it smell same as perfume..MMmmm)

Re the scalded cat..was awful , horrendous and yes eventually it came good but after months of dressings, lost all its skin full thickness all over under carriage, feet, under tail and privates etc..eventually it healed but had hairless tighter skin, never got any nails back though on its feet as all its nail beds sloughed off, wasnt my cat but a patient and one that will never leave my mind, a wee red boy too.  I always think if i spead his message and make people think of something they wouldnt have before (i never used to run cold water first either) then his pain wasnt for nothing if that makes sense.

What is it with these bengly babies, i know another tribe that also have their own bedroom..Jeez i had to share when i was a kid HUMPH...ROFL

Oh Lynn  :'( poor little baby> Please give him a tickle and a kiss from Teoh and me  :Luv:

Yes please do spread the word. Goodness if it helps to stop that ever happening to another cat/kitten then its very worthwhile

Oh yes, the jean paul gaultier bubble bath is just like the perfume, its really lovely but only for special occasions!

My house has two bedrooms and the second bedroom is all his!

He has his own bed, basket, little bathroom and his food tray in there, along with a big iron double bed which he loves to jump on and some nice high shelves...

As I haven't any children, its all his and looks like a bengal nursery   :Luv:

He may well have to share if he ever wants a bengal playmate!!! We will have to wait and see if he is happy on his own in the day or needs a friend, maybe of the brown glitter furred variety!  ;)

Exciting news too!

Teoh is getting a Bengal playmate, we are promised the best boy of the litter too  ;D

Kittens are due 9th of July, I like the name 'Storm' or 'Silver Storm', apparently its now a girls name though but it is a boys name according to history, we also thought Howard Hunter to go with Teoh Tiger, not sure and the poor blighter isnt born yet  ;)

 :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:

Shall we say... Teoh has taken an odd interest in Jules ;) but I think its just kitten adoration of his Human Daddy!

I know it might be a tad strange.....but we named Teoh after one of our favourite restaurants...we love it there and we love him. Just suited him down to the ground  :Luv:

He doesn't respond to the name yet, I'm not sure he ever will TBH  :scared: but he follows Debs around all the time she is in the house  :Luv:

As for the new kitten we thought about the name 'theo' but that seemed too close to Teoh.....and given Teoh doesn't really grasp his name (as yet) I think confusion may occur?

Anyways...I would like the new kitten to be called 'howard' (another restaurant name)...Debs might prefer 'storm'

Any thoughts?

Hi Jules & Debs (and of course the scrumptious Teoh)

Congrats on the 2nd kitten news, I am doubly jealous now  :Luv:

My boys are the same age as Teoh and I was getting to the point where I didn't think they would learn their names.  I always used their names in 'conversations' (yes, I know I sound  like 'careful Riley you'll hurt yourself' as I pluck him off something he shouldn't be on/in) but they wouldn't come when called.  I made a concerted effort to call them only using their proper name ie Riley/Lukey instead of silly nicknames like baby Riles or Mr Wooky.  When they came near me I repeated their names over and over again at the same time as giving them some Milky Flake-ums for kittens (milky style kitten treats).  I did this for two days and now they bound over come to their names when called... most of the time!

I can also completely empathise with the lack of sleep, it's REALLY getting to me know, they came home at 10 weeks old so have had this for 6 weeks solid.  Lucas is an angel and you wouldn't know he is there at night but as for Riley, well  :tired: :tired: :tired:  I am trialling a psychological training method so will let you know the details if I have a breakthrough  :evillaugh:

give him time and he'll get to know his name..cody SOOOO knows his name  :evillaugh:  i just have to say "cody" and he immediately resonds Pprrrruurrrrrr in his cody voice (so the hard of hearing wont have any problems  :evillaugh:  )

normally i prefer human names but given the choice i'd prefer storm over howard.

Congrats on the new bengly!  ;D  I like the name Storm.

I sometimes wonder whether Mosi knows his name but he does, he just chooses not to respond most of the time.  Last night I couldn't find him and thought I may have shut him in the bathroom so went around calling Mosi - he came bouncing out from behind the curtains.  He knows exactly who Mosi is!

Lack of sleep?  6 weeks?  I'm a pro - you've got another year or so to catch me up!  ;D  Mosi has his good nights, his bad nights and his somewhere in between nights!  Doesn't have too many good nights.  ;D  But he's cute so he gets away with it.

Hey Susanne

You have hit the nail on the head!  ;D Mosi sounds pretty cool I think our young man may have 'selective hearing' also!

Thanks about the name too. Storm does sound rather cool but may be a tad fierce and I would love another cuddly boy so I am growing fonder of little Howard Hunter by the minute, not sure why but it sort of feels right  :Luv:

I think Jules is pretty smitten with this name also  :Luv:

Lots of time for us to be sure, when we visit the kittens I am certain we will then get it just right  :care:

Yay on the expected new arrival.

2 of our cats know their names, Lirael was originally named Kay by the breeder she's a very needs to be near you cat so she picked up her name fast (that and we were constantly yelling it, "Lirael, NO! Get off daddy's Legos"

Smoke was named Megan from the rescue we got her from but doesn't answer to either ;)

I like Storm better than Howard but if you're going for resturant names then Howard would work. Though I'd have issues as my favorite is From Rome to Mexico in Dublin (might have the name backwards).

When they came near me I repeated their names over and over again at the same time as giving them some Milky Flake-ums for kittens (milky style kitten treats).  I did this for two days and now they bound over come to their names when called... most of the time!

:thanks: Helen. I will try this in the evening when our young man has his kitten milk treat. I do like the sound of your Milky Flake-ums, where do you get them from please?

Debs xx

I bought them from Pets at Home but they sell them in Jollyes and most online pet stores too...  They are very light in texture and weight and apparently they taste, well, um - milky! They get the big paws up from the boys  :drool; :ok:

Hobbes loves those too, he gets them before I go to bed and he always jumps onto the platform on the cat tree to get them. He does respond sometimes to his name but it took him quite a while and like Mosi he has selective hearing too  I can sympathise with the lack of sleep too - 4am is Hobbes' favourite time to come for a cuddle and as he sticks his head under my hand until I stroke him I have no choice but to succumb  Having said that I did get to sleep in until 5am this morning and woke up of my own accord to see Dylan and Hobbes lying curled up together  :Luv: That will be it for the next few weeks tho

Well, young Teoh had the 'snip and chip' today  :(

Apparently (according to the vet) he should be 'sleepy and lethargic' right now.

Predictably he's being his usual nutcase self  :evillaugh:

Our little Teoh is truly mental  :-:

Far from being sleepy he is going absolutely mental...he's attacked us both (in a really playful manner) but Debs is now carrying some really nasty wounds  :scared:

I guess the Bengal genes over ride all this post op trauma business  :innocent:

Anyway, to answer our questions re: Howard......yes he was born july the 10th. We've not met him yet, but our breeder is pretty certain she has picked him out for us. We are paying them a visit on sunday to meet the latest member of our 'family'

Howard shares the same mum as Teoh, and his dad is silvergam silver shadow.

Here is Howard with princess, again she had nine kittens (one unfortunately died  :'( )

No idea which one is Howard mind you  :evillaugh:

Pleased to hear Teoh is showing no side effects from his visit to Mr Vet  ... Zephyr was exactly the same ... I actually had a call from my vet when he was taken in to ask if I could come and collect him a bit earlier than arrange cuz he was making such a racket and was obviously over the anaesthetic

Have a lovely time on Sunday with the babies .. looking forward to seeing the first official "Howard" pics :)

Teoh is lovely Jules  :Luv:

Think you will find it was me who said they are not typically lapcats (some other breeds are more suited for this purpose but thats not to say bengals wont snuggle on laps!).  This is a common view shared by many official bengal clubs as well as the bengal cat rescue.  There are of course always exceptions to any rule and it sounds like Teoh is one of those  :)

I also said most people either decide to get them in pairs or get another one later  ;)

Teoh decided to jump/fall out of a first floor window this morning

I say jump/fall because I simply can't believe he would try to 'jump' 13ft down onto the patio.

No harm done though it seems, I looked out of the window and he was smug as hell sitting under the garden furniture  :Luv:

Glad to hear Teoh is fine after his 'fall'.  I had a similar episode with one of my boys, however I was in the room at the time and he most definitely jumped!!!!!  Suffice to say all my window are now either firmly shut or catproofed!

Gorgeous photo, he's so cute.

Cats definately do sustain injury, often very serious ones jumping from even that height so be careful, actually i've heard some people say that shorter falls ie first floors can sometimes be more dangerous as they dont always have enough time mid flight to rectify themselves

BTW .. did you know that Howard means "protector of the home" ... I only know this because the White Witch that lives across the road from me has just got herself a new 8 week old kitten and he is also called Howard.

Glad Teoh is OK after his "leap"  I remember when I caught Zephyr jumping out of my 1st floor bathroom window ..I was beside myself and rushed downstairs to find him sat on the floor looking up at the window as much as to say "wow that was further than I thought it would be!"  Needless to say ... ALL first floor windows are now catproofed.

I think we have agreed to either see Howard next weekend or the weekend after....we have a choice between two of the 'boys' but my mind is set, once again the kitten has chosen us not the other way around  :Luv:

I know that sounds pretty awful/insensitive choosing between one or the other, but they have barely opened their eyes, and I (for one) would like to see them a few weeks older.

The kitten Debs has posted is VERY dark, in fact he looks near black.....he's my choice though...he even has black ears  :evillaugh:

I have to say you are definitely right in waiting to see them, and I thought breeders wouldnt actually let you see the kittens until they were at least 5 weeks old, the rescue I foster for has a minimum age of 6 weeks.

Hi Jules and Debs,

I just Knew you would end up getting another Bengal baby, Teoh is growing up to be a very handsome boy and little Howard is a real cutie

My 2 are growing fast and OH announced the other night that it would be nice to have one of each sort of Bengal   that would mean a silver spoted, a blue spotted, a snow, a brown marble and goodness knows what else aswell as the 2 we have already got and my other 4 furbabies - think he must have been having a funny turn - they are addictive though

Hello all,

A quick update (jules here, debs is no longer using the interweb to chat)

Bad news and good(ish) news fingers crossed...

Much that I hate to be proven wrong, but I think Linda may be correct about certain Bengals....Teoh has become quite 'timid' in the last month or so. He is 'very' selective about the time he spends with us, and I think its worse for Debs given she always wants to pick him up for a cuddle. He's happy being picked up/stroked but doesn't purr at all (audibly) and if you pick him up/then sit down he's off like a shot....but he does 'purr'..weird really, if the room isn't in absolute silence you can't hear him.

We accept that and still love him to bits...he seems to have the character of a grumpy old man that you cant help to feel a warm affection to  :Luv:

Howard, on the other hand, is the most affectionate cat I've ever come across..doting is an understatement. I just hope he doesn't mature in the same way as Teoh, but if he does he will be given just as much love too  :Luv:

Fabulous picture  :)

What a shame Debs doesnt come online , doesnt she like us anymore  :(   ;)

Teoh is still young so you never know he may change again.  My cody hardly ever purred when he was under 1 year old but now his purrs come easier and easier (he'll be 2 in march) so they do change as they mature.

Post by: Susanne (urbantigers) on November 13, 2007, 18:23:33 PM
Aww - they are both gorgeous.  Dont' give up Teoh - just because he's not a lap cat doesnt mean he won't turn out to be affectionate.  I would never try to pick up Jaffa as he hates it, and when he was young he never came on my knee or anything, but he loved it if I got down to his level and gave cuddles.  As he grew older he started climbing on my knee occasionally if I was sat watching tv (I think he was about 3 when he first did it!).  He still doesn't curl up and go to sleep, but he now frequently climbs on me if I'm sat at the computer or on the soafa, and sits leaning against me so that I can kiss his head and give him cuddles.  He's an incredibly affectionate cat, just hates being picked up.

That's interesting about Cody's purr, Lynn.  Mosi has never had much of a purr and I used to think he didnt' purr at all.  But sometimes if I put my head on his side I could feel faint vibrations.  However, over the past couple of weeks he seems to have started purring louder.  You still have to be resting your head on him, but now instead of faint vibrations I hear a definite purr.  I wonder whether it's a breed thing or just an individual cat thing?  Jaffa purred loudly from the day I brought him home at 8 weeks.

Glad to hear both boys are OK ... sorry to hear Debs has stopped chatting  :(

Looking forward to more pics of the gorgeous boys.  Regarding the "lap cat" thing my boy Zephyr has never been a lap cat but as he is getting older he is getting better and loves bedtime when he come upstairs and have a cuddle.

Hello all, long time no speak to  :shy:

Teoh is coming around, we now understand he likes time on his own....but when he is ready he comes over for a cuddle  :Luv2:

Teoh does purr, but its almost inaudible...until you get him in his own room, then he lets 'rip'  :Luv:

Sadly (for me) Howard had his chop done last week (excuse my male terminology on that matter, I really felt for the poor mite) To me, it was a real shame he didn't get to forward his bloodline...perfect temprament, and probably the best markings I've seen on a silver Bengal....but hey ho, he seems as happy now as before his op, thank the lord for that  :Luv2:

Zephyr has no real worries, Howard Hunter is right now swinging from a tapestry on the landing and looks like a wildcat

He can just pose like his Dad when a camera comes out, the rest of the time he is a mentalist!

Hi Debs,

How are the two gorgeous boys?

Hi Sam

Thank you for asking

The boys are growing up big and fast, they are like two peas in a pod today!

Although Howard is a lot darker than Teoh, he sometimes looks black as certain angles

They have totally different personalities too which is a nice contrast

Being new to owning cats may I ask you please?

Is it normal for them to sleep all day?

They have not shifted from the sofa today  :tired:

I do hope this is normal, I am a little bit worried in case this is not healthy for them

 :shy:

Title: Re: Kittens/cats ears

:evillaugh: Lexy can sleep 18-20 hours of the day. I believe its perfectly normal. Cats live long because they sleep so much.

Oh thank you Ruth

That has really put my mind at rest

I was worried that they might be sleeping because they were bored or not happy babies

I guess I have a lot to learn about cats  :thanks:

That is very good news because at this rate they will live til they are 110 years old

So will Lexy  ;) :)

I didn't think it was as normal for Bengals as moggies, due to their high energy levels, but as long as they aren't getting fat, they are obviously getting enough exercise.
Title: Re: Kittens/cats ears
Post by: Susanne (urbantigers) on February 02, 2008, 22:04:26 PM
Well it's certainly not normal for my two to sleep all day!  ;D  Quite the opposite.  But it is funny weather at the moment and they're maybe just feeling lazy today!  For young Bengals I'd say it's not normal if they are like that every day, but as long as they're not sleeping all the time and do show interest in play generally, then I don't think there's anything to worry about.  I do actually envy you in a way.  I just dont' know what it's like to have cats that sleep all day since both of mine are real livewires.  I love them like that but there are times when I wish they would give me some peace and go and lie down!

They are both very stunning and look happy and healthy to me  ;D

Thank you all

Teoh is a tad on the large size so wet food has been limited to just brekkie now, hopefully he will stop snoozing so much!

Already he is far more playful like his brother Howard

Today, the boys had a treat...

Jules has put their shelf back up after it fell down as I swang off it while drunk

It is now reinforced with a shiny metal pole!!! Plus rawl bolts!!!

Here are the boys taking a look at their new observation station

Its so high up they love it  :Luv2:

Wow!!! Just for info, dry food is more likely to keep the weight on than wet food is, so I would be limiting the dry, not the wet.

I want  :wow: OK, I meant Howard and Teoh but I guess that's a No so how about some info on that super high shelf - did you cover it with furry stuff yourself?  If so how did you attach it, where can I buy the furry stuff and where can I buy the pole - my boys MUST have one  :evillaugh:

Hello Desley

Thank you!

Diet has just been re-arranged, didn't know that so very much appreciated, Howard is very slender whereas Teoh is a little portly, bless!

But hopefully Teoh will soon be a slimmer boy for his new regime  :evillaugh:

The boys like a treat of whiskers cat milk, how often would you say is best for them to have that to avoid weight gain?

They really adore it!  :Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2:
Title: Re: Kittens/cats ears
Post by: Sam (Fussy_Furball) on February 04, 2008, 18:48:35 PM
Cat milk is classed as a "food" rather than a drink therefore it should only be given as a treat .... once or twice a week at the most.

Title: Re: Kittens/cats ears

That was my handywork  :innocent:

Its an Ikea 'Lack' shelf...cost about £20...http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120218449873&ih=002&category=141182&ssPageName=WDVW&rd=1 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120218449873&ih=002&category=141182&ssPageName=WDVW&rd=1)

We went to a local shop that sells faux fur and fitted it with a staple gun. then fixed the shelf to the wall using plugs and screws.

Unfortunatley Teoh is a right fat lad now (joking) and their combined weight saw the shelf slightly pull off the wall....before Debs demolished it completely

The shelf is now fixed to the wall with the biggest (heavy load) Rawlbolts the shelf could accommodate (about £6) Debs bought the pole and fixings (about £20)..... the shelf isn't going to fall down again (even if Debs does decide to go mountaineering again)  :evillaugh:

I am so glad Jules replied to that as I couldn't take any credit for such a FANTASTIC shelf!!!

It was all his idea and hard work

 :Luv: :Luv2: :Luv:

All I did was send the proto-type crashing to the floor, oops   :naughty:

The boys have been sitting up there since I got home

Hmmmm, yep they do look cosy...

I must control the temptation to get up there with them again  ;)

Jules here on Debs lappy...

Got the pole from B&Q....it cost about £20 with all the fixings. It was 2.4m long (37mm dia IIRC) and I cut it down to size

Teoh is seriously hogging the shelf, so I guess another is in order; I think 1.1metre long is a tad too small for them both when they are fully grown  :innocent:

Jules here...some bad news im afraid.

Teoh had some sort of 'fit' this afternoon   :(

Luckily enough Debs had to go home sick this afternoon, she called me to tell me that she had just found Teoh at the foot of the stairs....

He was led on his side, tongue hanging out, eyes rolled back and the poor mite had also lost control of his bowels

She quickly took him to the vets (he was hardly breathing) and they put him in an oxygen box and inserted a drip.

Sounds like he is coming around, but they are doing further tests and keeping him in overnight.

Fingers crossed peeps   :(

Thank you everybody

Its been a very upsetting 24 hours but Teoh is back home now

He has had many tests and x-rays and seems well again luckily

The vet thought at first he had eaten something like rat poison and ran blood tests

All clear and his chest scan/x-ray is clear also  :)

We have been told to 'monitor' him for the weekend and take him back into the vets on Tuesday for another examination and results of further tests which had to be sent away

he is a tad weedy and has all his fur missing on his neck and leg  :(

we think the most likely senario is that whilst he was 'racing' howard on the staircase, he tripped and fell down the stairs and knocked himself out on the concrete wall ending in a episode of trauma

He keeps twitching down his back though so we cannot rule out further episodes of seizures and need to watch him closely, poor baby

I really thought we were going to lose Teoh yesterday, he looked at deaths door, so amazed and happy to have our number one boy home again

Howard hissed like mad when he got back, maybe the smell was different

Hoping its a one off accident and not a medical problem

 xxx

phew! well that's a relief! I wonder why they did not xray his skull? Concussion would certainly cause the symptoms you described, so that may be the case. In which case the 'ticklish' spine should sort itself once he gets past the concussion. Fingers crossed. Such a tiny wee babe will hopefully not have fallen hard enough to cause more serious head injuries ...  ;D

I'm back at my flat now.....and cant sleep after all the stress.

Yes we got Teoh back on Saturday, and he seems fine...and strangely enough more friendly after the 'incident'

Personally I think he knocked himself out, although I'm mightily glad I didn't find him in that sort of distressed/unconcious state and covered in his own poo.

Whilst I was worried about Debs being stressed, it really brought it into context how much I love Teoh...picking him up from the vets (and him being healthy) was such a relief  :Luv:

Lets hope it was a one off  :)

PS: sorry if I only contribute on purrs on this thread  :scared:

Hi Blackcat

That is a very good point

They said he had 'no obvious injuries' which was of course a relief, but yes, if Teoh's head had been knocked so severely as too send him unconscious, then I agree they should have x-rayed his little skull. We were expecting a big bump on his head if he had knocked himself out but thankfully it all feels fine :)

I love to hear the boys play, but if Teoh's 'collapse' was the result of an accident, it has made me a tad nervous, I am scared stiff to let them play/race unsupervised on the staircase now tbph

Taking Teoh to see the vet and collect further test results tomorrow at 6pm, fingers crossed all will go well for him. Not sure he will be happy leaving his home, he did not much enjoy his night in a cage with other animals, dogs and tortoises for company, they say he was rather stressed, poor love  :(

Baby Howard went shopping today and came back with a nice big tin of Quality Street!!! He says they are for the nice ladies at the vets as they dropped everything to make his big brother well, bless his furry Bengal socks ;)

Thank you Ruth, Helen, Desley and Susanne for the good wishes, Jules and I promise to keep you updated on Teoh's progress. Thank you all for thinking of him  :thanks:

Love from Debs x

Hello all

Just to let you know that all test results (bar one) are back and were all fine!

Teoh is getting back to normal at home. Seems far more affectionate to us and totally adores his carry/travel case now!

He got in it to travel last night without any help and was a very good boy for the vet!

Hopefully it was a one off although she says she cannot rule out further seizures so to keep him closely monitored

Thank you all for your support

Zephyr and Howard are both aristocats!!!

Howard has the most 'Lord-Snooty' face going bless him

Good News and Bad here Ruth

Howard say that he would very much like a visit to the Queen Lexy palace, but ahem he is rather particular in his requirements...

He states that in order to keep up his image he will need a helicopter to collect him please. He requests that he would like to have an entire wing of Lexy's palace at his disposal. He would like a welcome jacuzzi bath complete with a bowl of caviar and finest champagne  :evillaugh:

Bless, he had no chance, look at his Father and it's no wonder Howard has Lord Snooty genes  ;D

Well,

Unfortunately Teoh had another 'incident' today....

Luckily for him I was at Debs house when it happened, unluckily for me I witnessed the whole episode  :(

Truly horrific to hear your pet make such distressing sounds whilst having what I can only descirbe as a 'seizure'...he then collapsed and couldn't move, with his tongue hanging out, panting again :(

He's back at the vets again over night, more tests have all proved negative (blood/ammonia levels seem fine) next is an MRI scan.

Any ideas what an MRI might pull up?

 :thanks: for any replies x

What adorable little kitts ;D

I have a little ginger boy, he was a bottle fed from last year (from a gypsy site)

He is mainly spotted rather than striped- he's a mischievous little devil :naughty:

Poor Teoh, and what a worrying time for you both.  I hope the vet can come up with some ideas as to why this is happening, and that it can be treated.  It must be horrible watching a much loved furry having seizures like that

Thank you Desley and Suzanne

Yes, I feel very sorry for Jules as he witnessed the whole episode, last time I just found Teoh twitching at the foot of the stairs but had no idea what had really happened  :scared:

Teoh is home and will be having an MRI scan next week. the vets said that he will need to be sedated to go through the tunnel still as the scan will not photograph properly if he moves, poor baby

We feel he has epilepsy as Jules has found a lot of information on the internet last night and it seems to be identical to Teoh's symtoms

They need to rule out brain tumors though, so fingers crossed

They are very cagey at the vets... but I guess they must be certain before they offer us a diagnosis just in case they get it wrong

Here he is with a little bandage on his leg as he has been fed with a drip again, poor boy was ravenous when he arrived home this morning

Sooooo glad he is home and so is Howard, he was lost without his big brother last night to play with  :(

I hope Teoh is ok today.

I know it can't be pleasant to see it. I've been there, with a pup I had many years ago. It's heartbreaking I know.

You have done well so far and I hope the MRI scan proves something that can be treated.

Poor little Howard  :(  Really hope you can get to the bottom of it, as far as I know Epilepsy is controllable in cats it's just a case of gettingthe correct dosage of meds - you can cross that bridge if and when you come to it.

On a happier note, Teoh looks as stunning as ever despite his trauma, I love that he has his very own model car too  :)

:thanks: to you all for being so lovely x

Teoh has had a pretty rotten day he has had his MRI scan and a spinal tap/CSF today

The poor little boy is slumped at home right now still very dozey from his sedation

Look what they have done to his fur  :(

The vet said that they have unfortunately found 2 areas of concern in his brain and his spine, they say they do not look like 'obvious' tumors, but they are sending them off to the lab for a second opinion along with some more blood tests...

She mentioned an increased signal at T1 and T2 of his spine and a slight enhancing/swelling in the pituitary area of the brain

Does anybody here know what this could be please or had a cat with a similar diagnosis?

Worried sick  :( :( :(

Poor little boy, hope he will be mended soon

He will be getting all of your hugs and cuddles all over again when he wakes up tonight  :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:

We are waiting for a second opinion on his MRI scan, the expert who is doing it on her hols but will be back on the 22nd and hopefully will take a look and may be able to help him further

I wonder how long it takes for fur to grow back?

Good luck for the second opinion - it can take a while for the fur to grow back, Rolo and Molly still have shorter fur from where their necks were shaved for bloods, they were done in Dec and Jan respectively. Tigers fur took ages after her ultrasound.

Hi Debs,

Glad to hear that Teoh is doing well, good luck for the 2nd opinion.  I bet Howard is quite a big boy now, which breeder did you get your Benglies from?  My Mums friend is interested in a Silver and the breeder we got ours from is not breeding many silvers anymore.

When Mellika was spayed in Sept she had all her fur back by Christmas.

Take care, huggles for Teoh and Howard xxx

Awww

Thank you everyone for your lovely kind words  :thanks:

We should get the second opinion back tomorrow or Wednesday so fingers crossed

Teoh's fur has started to grow back, yippee!

But it has a long way to go....

Yes Sheryl, Howard is a big boy now, about the same size as a normal adult cat but way behind Teoh on size, Teoh is massive!!!!!

Do you know why the breeder is not breeding silver's anymore?

In America Silver Bengals are not recognised as a pure pedigree... and in all 3 of my bengal cat books, there are only photographs of brown ones! Not sure why  :-:

The breeder we used is in Bristol, Redgrave Bengals

I have also heard that silverglam are very good too, Howard's father 'Silver Shadow' is a stunning stud from Silverglam, Howard really is his father's son  :Luv2:

He was sniifing our tea on the dining table the other evening...ie stood up and head over the table with his paws on the table

They are both gorgeous and huge.  Our new little snow boy Teeko looks like he is going to be a big boy- he is only 4 months old and is alreaddy nearly 3kg!, Raffiki our Silver marbled boy is very tall and muscular but doesnt weigh as much as our brown spotted girl Mellika who is a real chunky girl, they were born on the same day but are not related.

Im not sure why our breeder isnt breeding many silvers anymore she is also not breeding many blues now, she is concentrating on snows and browns and is also breeding savannahs now too.

Any news on Teohs 2nd opinion yet, fingers crossed that the news is all good xxx

Hello all

Good news and bad today regarding little Teoh

It was a bit of a palava today tbh, the receptionist claimed that she had no idea when the results would be back as (and I quote) we don't usually send brain scans away for second opinions so this is all a bit new to me!

I asked her if I could telephone the other laboratory myself, I was on hold for an age and then she told me that our vet would chase it up for Jules and I today

The vet has 'just' telephoned me at home at this late hour to say that Teoh's second opinion on his brain scan is clear of tumors and has come back 'normal'  :)

It was sent for a second opinion to an expert at the laboratory as there were 'increased signals/activity in his brain and spine'

The diagnosis is that Teoh has not had a head injury as first thought. He also does not have a brain or spinal tumor. Our vet originally said that although the MRI scan did not look like an 'obvious' mass/tumor, it was increased activity and she wanted to be sure that there was no tumor there and find out why there were such increased activity/signals when MRI scan's usually show nothing at all out of the ordinary

The expert at the lab told our vet that she is 95% certain that Teoh is suffering from epilepsy caused by electrical activity in his brain hence the increased electrical signals seen on his scan

Teoh's level of electrical activity in his brain is very high :'(

Our vet confessed that she did not think that it would be epilepsy as it is very rare in cats  :-:

Jules thought this pretty much all the time, perhaps he should be a vet!

So, we have to 'monitor' Teoh now, he may not have a fit again, but the expert suggested to our vet that if he has another seizure within the 2 months of the last one that he should be given medication to control his seizures

The medicine does has side effects she said, so it may be that we have to monitor him for a while and find out the frequency of any future fits to be able to get his dosage correct before he starts any medication

So, very good news that our boy does not have a brain tumor and we will have him for a nice long life  :Luv2:

But, not so good is that we now know that he is epileptic and could possibly suffer with that all his life

There is a chance that he may never have another fit, so fingers crossed and thank you all for being there

Sorry to ramble on  :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

I have just had to stop the boys play fighting, it seems when Teoh gets over excited he is more likely to fit plus we are coming up to month later so watching him like a hawk as it says on many of the cat epilepsy sites that the fits often go in 30 days cycles  :scared:

Sure the boys would too!

That's good news

Teoh was quite a good boy when he had his tablets last time, I hid them in small pieces of chicken breast from M&S!!!

Walked away from the first attempt to put said tablet directly into his mouth with only a few minor scratches on my face and throat!!! :evillaugh:

If all else fails, Jules loves his steak so I might steal some of his finest fillet steak to disguise Teoh's medication, he will never guess!  :naughty:

Thanks Desley, glad to learn that Teoh is not as rare with this condition as our vet believes  :thanks:

He is only just one year old just a baby still really

It does worry/sadden me when told by a vet that she had ruled that diagnosis out originally as she thought it was so rare!

I would give anything to make Teoh better, poor little love  :ahh:

Wow!!!  :wow:

Thank you Caroline, your photo's are a real treat to wake up too!!!

You are so lucky, what stunners they all are, I especially love the pic of them all snuggled up on your bed, they look gorgeous with the 3 different variations of perfect bengal fur!

The picture of Sabre on his back made me do a double take, it's so much like the picture of Teoh taken on his very first night here!

Simba's fur is the most amazing colour there and what a distinguished face

I really adore the richness of the brown bengals, Teoh's Dad is a brown bengal he is called Apollo, his fur shimmers, the breeder keeps saying the silvers 'drip with glitter' but I cannot see it, I have only really seen that on Apollo being brown

Oh dear. This is bad. I must not get another bengal but I have completely fallen for Sky  :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:

What a cutie pie she is!!!! I have not seen very many marbled Bengals, never in real life, only spotted ones, she is beautiful  :Luv2:

They look as if they all get on very well

Did you get them at the same time or are they different ages?

Do they get on alright with your moggies?

One of the last litter our breeder had was given back to her as apparently the bengal terrorised the lady's moggie!  :evillaugh: :evillaugh: :evillaugh:

Brilliant photo's Caroline, thank you so much for starting the day off with a great big smile

Good news that Teoh does not have a tumour - Phew.

My sisters cat was diagnoes with epilepsy 4 yrs ago and with medication she is fine - over time they have decreased the dosage.

Stay well Teoh xxxx

Hi Sheryl

Sorry to hear about your sister's cat  :(

But thank you for letting us know that she is doing fine on her medication, that's most encouraging to know

Good news about her dosage being decreased too

Fingers crossed she may not need medicine again one day :Luv2:

Thanks Debs yes they get on great. Sabre+Sky were from the same breeder but from different litters.Sabre was born 8th feb07 and Sky was born 2nd march 07.Simba was born 23rd feb 07. Simba has been suffering from I B D and has been the vets loads of time for a bad tummy. :'(
They get on fine with Corky our 11 year old male (did take a while though) but Geri our 5 year old girl still stays out of their way. Sky and Geri are even worse, think Sky wants to be Queen cat. Lol.xxx

Caroline thank you!!!

What a wonderful baby Bengal fix!

They are all so adorable, but this little darling is my fave pic, cannot stop staring at Sky as a baby. I loved her before but now with baby pics awwww  :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:

Jules said to me that Sabre remind's him of Teoh as a baby too, it's uncanny especially as they are different colours

Simba's Mum is beautiful, wouldn't it be nice to find a picture of Monty too, bet he is stunning!

I am so happy looking at your pics Caroline, they are fab  :)

Jules is probably a tad worried that I would like a third bengal (brown) now  :scared:

As if eh....  :naughty: :naughty: :naughty:

Hee hee  :innocent:

I have just popped into the bedroom to see Jules having a Sunday afternoon snooze with Teoh snoozing next to him

Howard is snoring his head off downstairs on the sofa next to me

It would be lovely to see a little one like Sky snuggled in too

But no more Bengals for now, not until we have a bigger house!

Then I reckon it will be okay!

 ;)

I am not feeling very well today so am at home

They are both lovely  :Luv: :Luv:

The boys have been very excited and I have been trying to sleep most of the day, but not that simple.... scratch scratch scratch at the bedroom door from them!  :tired:

They are not allowed in the bedroom since they scratched the beuatiful designer leather bed to bits  :censored:

They are both now asleep and I am off to the doctors in a moe, my ear is quite painful and I am full of the sniffles so best see the quack as cannot really be home from work too long

Time for Teoh and Howard to play doctor to me for a change!  :heeee heeee:

Off to doctors now xx

Hi Debs,

Hope you are feeling a bit better today and Dr Howard Hunter and Consultant Teoh are looking after you   :evillaugh:

Yes Sam, the medics are being very attentive and looking after me a treat thank you.

Dr Howard Hunter is chasing his stethoscope around the room as I type and Consultant Teoh says it's best all round if we all take (yet another) snooze! ;)

Although, today it appears Dr Howard Hunter and Consultant Teoh Tiger think the best thing for me is to play 'let's tickle the cats tummies'

They are funny and keep staring at me until I catch either eye, then they fling themselves on their backs spotted tummies ready for tickling!

It's getting quite competitive, each trying to out do each other in the cutest tummy stakes!!!

They do teach them some odd methods in medical school thesedays

But their company is a real tonic and I am feeling far better today  ;D

Hello Sam,

Thanks for the e-mail...and yes we are still all well and alive  :shy:

We don't post on here much as we both think that our posts could seem like 'look at our Bengals'.....that's certainly not the case, but we don't get online that much (well I do, but I'm always chatting about fixing my broken car  >:(  )

Anyways, Debs mum has kindly bought the duo a newer/bigger carry case, as they have pretty much eaten the smaller one we got when Teoh was a nipper....and I MEAN eaten it  :innocent:

We questioned Teoh about it.....but he has found his gay side, and now only resides on silk surfaces after his illness  :innocent:

When pushed, he gave me his Paddington 'hard' stare  ;)

I'll twist Debs arm to get some pics taken of Howard, the ickle mite never stays still for more than five seconds these days.

Joking aside, Teoh has been fine since his seizures...I'm now 100% convinced he knocked himself out both times. They both fight more than ever (and make up equally afterwards) and since Teohs trips to the vets he has truly become a 'loving' animal; he sits with us on the sofa most nights, which is very nice indeed  :Luv: Howard also does 'monkey see, monkey do' and is joining in the love fest  :)

So all in all, all is well in the household  :Luv2:

Ok,

Every time I come on here I get inspired to look at all of the kitten pics of our boys when we met them and invited them to live with us...

Happy days  :Luv2:

One of Howard then, one of (if not) the best looking spotted Bengal I've seen...not that I'm biased mind you  :innocent:

Hi ya Jules & Debs,

Great to hear from ya ... I can't see anything wrong with "Look at our Benglies" posts .... most of us have "known" the boys since they were babies and it's lovely to see pics of them and to see what beautiful boys they have grown into.

Great to hear that Teoh is fit and well (and in touch with his femine "silky" side  ) and has turned into a cuddle bum  :Luv2:

I love the pic of the boys in their baskets sooooo cute.

Don't be strangers and feel free to post as many pics as you can find.

All the best

Evening all  :Luv:

We went for a walk this afternoon, and I got bitten whilst stroking a random cat...he loved the attention right up until he decided my hand must taste like premium cat food  :shify: and we realised we hadn't been on this sit for a while...sorry  :'(

Teoh and Howard are fine these days, no more fits for Teoh which is great  :Luv:

We've just got back from barcelona (where the camera went missing) so we can't post any pics....but Howard is still long/thin and always on his back wanting his tummy stroked.

Teoh is.....well....massive now.  2.5 years old now and I would think he's about 10kg, he eats like a bladdy horse too

I'll post some recent pics when we replace the camera.

Hope you are all keeping well  :shy:

Woo Hoo hi ya guys,

How spooky I was only thinking about you two (sorry, you 4) the other night and was gonna send you a message to see how Teoh was getting on. Fab news that he hasn't had any more fits ... long may it continue.

Lovely to hear from you again.  Glad you had a nice time in Barcelona and really looking forward to seeing pics of Howard and Fatty Teoh

 :Luv2:

And so we are here again! whenever I think about 'getting' Teoh I think about Purrs and the great advice we had all those years back :)

14 years ago now (where did they go?) I'd genuinely like to thank everybody for the advice you all gave us both back then - it really was appreciated

On a sombre note - Teohs days left are numbered. He has heart/kidney failure and has oedema everywhere. He's happy, active and hungry still  :P but his trip to the rainbow bridge will be pretty soon  :(

On a brighter side - Howard is still with us and mental as always! keeping him away from Teoh has been tough but necessary

So. Thanks all :) Teoh has been loved soooo much by us and he's given it all back. This was the first place I posted about #1 son so I felt it would be fitting to close the thread circle

All our best to all  :(
