Many years ago we bought a scratching post from Argos. It was great. Base is about 30cm square, post is about 50cm high and 10cm diameter, wound with rope about 1cm thick. But it is now pretty much destroyed and a replacement is needed.
The one that Argos now sell is rubbish. The post is only about 40cm x 7cm, and is wound with fairly thin string. I've searched around online and it seems that scratching posts are now either feeble things like at Argos, or they are monstrous multi-tier affairs.
All we want is a simple, sturdy post about the same size as our old one. Any suggestions where we might get one?

Kalven do a range of various sizes and the one we have is very sturdy.

I know exactly what you mean about a "simple" scratching post.
I have two of these: http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/scratching_posts/scratching_posts/33681 (http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/scratching_posts/scratching_posts/33681). It's a bit taller than the one you describe at 80cm high on a 40cm base but is pretty sturdy - I've had one of them for about 3 years, used by two cats, and it has still got all its string - and it's an inoffensive beige. ;D

:-[ Don't you just hate it when people don't read your posts thoroughly? :-[
Apologies don't think Kalven do what you are after.

could you just replace the post or is the whole thing ruined, the purrs shop sells replacement posts at different heights

Many thanks for the replies. The post sold by Zooplus is closest to our needs, but it's just a bit too big for where it needs to live in the kitchen.
I may try buying some 10mm sisal rope and attempt to re-cover the existing post.

I've done that myself, got the rope off ebay!

What you want is the Ancol Fatboy it is the same but has a weighted base and is very strong and lasts ages, mine lasts about 3 years but does get a lot of abuse from the Clan cats

What you want is the Ancol Fatboy ...
Thanks, but that's definitely too big!
Looks ideal for a pet leopard :)

Mine love it weight ranges from 2,5kgs to 9kgs and it stands a lot of abuse and mine sit on the top of it and sleep on the base
