Title: Is total castration different to neutering?
Post by: mad_lilli on April 20, 2012, 21:51:37 PM
As some of you know Mr Ted is a demon piddler and a fighter. He is neutered (since 9 months old) but I'm wondering if I should take him to be castrated. He comes in with cuts and abcesses on a regular basis from his altercations with fat tabby from up the street (ftfus) and over the past 6 or 7 months (since Cooper went missing) Ted is marking a lot - my bedding mainly and one of the sofas downstairs. Would the castration potentially reduce his fighting and calm his need to mark? Obviously I wouldn't put him through the op on a whim, but I wonder if the reduction in hormones would result in a happier Ted. We've been down the feliway, zylkene, kalm-aid routes to no avail.
All thoughts welcome - and I am thinking of Ted first, piddling second and ftfus third.

Sorry but Im a bit confused - if he has been neutered I thought that was the same as being castrated ?? just a diferent name  :-:

  me too! However, I think castration removes the lot, rather than having the tubes tied? Hence my asking here before making a total idiot of myself at the vet!  :shy:

My understanding of castration/neutering (although I could be totally wrong!) is that they make an incision into the outer sack and then remove the 'innards' hence the slighty deflated look  :naughty: I've not heard of tubes being tied in an animal, I thought that was what a vasectomy was in a human man  :-:

Totally confused here and thought that neutering was not tying anything but what ever is done it stops the male hormones after a short while.

Nothing will stop spraying and fighting unless the target is sorted.

Cats still mark their territorry, male and female.

If there is another cat in the area that Ted does not like, could be because the other cat isnt neutered or likes to fight.

The reason I'm confused, is that when we had boy cats at home, when I was a kid, they had no bits at all left over, even deflated ones. The first male cat I had myself in England was 13 (10 years ago) and he had no bits at all. When I rescued D'arcy he was 2 and had his bits but was neutered. Has the surgery changed? Ted has been neutered too, but still has his bits.

If you dared, a squeeze would probably reveal they were empty  :shify: :shify:

I don't dare! I like my blood travelling thru my veins as opposed to down my arms/legs! I know I sound like a dimwit, I just don't understand why my old cats didn't have their cojones after neutering but now the cats do. My sister's boy Aslan has no cojones either

I don't like to dredge up the past, especially when it involves embarassing me but have a look at the pic in this thread http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php/topic,8252.msg130562.html#msg130562 I promise I'm not a cat perv - honest!  :evillaugh:

   @ Tiggy's mum! Thank you for that! I feel better now    ;D
I have trawled the net and it seems that the total removal of the sac is an outdated method of neutering. The current method is as Tiggy's mum described below - small incision, removal of contents and either the tying off of the cords or stitching, then said contents are cut free. So, it looks like Ted will not be undergoing any further interference with his bits!

Tiggy's Mum, thats amazing! - I also love the part on CurlyCayz comment which states "Attachment Deleted by Admin".....what sort of kitty indecency was that picture!?!?!

Unfortunately...  :shify: :shify: I am now feeling slightly degraded by the fact that i am trying to picture in my head Nuggies Nads (the fur hides any impressive falsies he may have aquired) and I wont be able to stop myself inspecting Peanuts Nuts (or lack off)  :shify: :shify:
Further more - I dont know whether I will be pleased at the fact whatever should be there isnt, or disappointed that in the removal they didnt get some exciting reconstructed falsies and look like 'real boys' :shify: :shify:

you dont realise what you;ve done Lilli.....every male cat on here will be getting inspected and groped in regions best left to vets

Nothing sinister... It's just that the post was from over 4 years ago now, any pics that are hosted via the 'browse/attach' button take up space on the Purrs forum server so are automatically removed after a few years to preserve space. My pervy pic was hosted via photobucket  :naughty:

This has really made me laugh!  ;D

My vets always refer to neutering as castration - no beating about the bush!

I'm really glad I asked now - Ted's issues aside, this has been both educational & funny!
@ Funkiechicken - poor Nuggie - weren't we discussing his poor exposed Nuggie nips a while back? Now it's Nuggies nads!

I've just found an even better pic for you mad_lilli, I'd obviously tried to blank the memory of taking this pic out as it was too traumatic  :evillaugh:

  you're right Lilly!! At this rate Nuggie will never be able to show himself in Cats Mouths again...... Literally exposed!!     this is also the person who took the hamster to the vet with a "tumour" only to be told it was a testicle and that the visit was free based on entertainment factor  :shify:  no wonder the cats don't trust me near their nether regions

Oh I'm so glad the removed photo was explained Tiggy and I can see by the latest photo that Riley is clearly proud of his falsies  :evillaugh:
Although as i am on my phone and the photos were coming up on screens I did take a sharp intake of breath as the photo above it was revealed  but was most relieved

Lilly...I think is safe to say everything's normal in that area  :shify: and hopefully once this dominant cat gives up there'll be no more spraying! x
