it could be anything cc, she might not have been fed properly from before you got her - she might have an infection of some kind (that causes prematurity in humans) - its nothing you've done if she wasn't with you who knows what could be happening, my Star was left in labour for two days before finally being given over to the rspca for a c section - at least you are doing your best for her

When Cassie had her kittens i thought a couple of them were dead ,mum was busy cleaning one while another was being born so i gently helped with the sac and cleaned round the nose and mouth with a towel, took a few minutes but they started to breathe shortly afterwards then mum took over

CC have you got a good sized cat carrier ? if so put clean bedding in it and confine mum and leave her to it; this may sound cruel to you but it really is best that mum is left to get on with things, this way she will also be bagged up ready to take to vet.

OK then settle her in the box and sit stroking her and reassuring her, watch for the ripples down her flanks they will tell you if she is still having contractions, you know vets often get things wrong; as for body discretly removed him and place somewhere safe in case its a vet jobby because vet will know if baby is prem. Make sure you have towel, kitchen roll handy and round ended scissors just in case, you can do this CC
Kittens eyes are shut tight so look non existent, kittens ears flat on head at first, i think mum is likely full term and vet error

She could have gone into labour early, or sometimes they can go into labour and just have one, and then stop completely until the time they should give birth.

CC they never look fully formed in the sac, give mum cat some space, make yourself a cuppa and check on her in 10 minutes, hard to be calm when so much is at stake but you can do it, give vet a ring as soon as they open.

CC take a deep breath and keep yourself calm, you really need to get Saffron into a box to deliver, leave the dead baby with her until she either pushes it away or disposes of it ( do not be upset if mum eats it this is natures way). If by any remote chance kitten is still warm try to remove sac and gently rub kitten in a small towel with head pointing downwards for a couple of minutes just incase he can be revived. Its not uncommon for first one to be stillborn so dont panic. As long as mum is not unduly distressed you can leave ringing the vet until they open but if she has been contracting heavily and produced nothing ring vet now.

If its still warm clear its airways and then very gently rub round the heart area and very very gently blow into its mouth but only little tiny puffs as its only tiny compared to our breathe,  also hold behind its neck and head for support and gently shake downwards to clear all passageways

Sadly that sometimes happens CC. If the kitten is still warm then it will be worth giving it a vigorous rub with a rough towel to see if you can get it to start breathing, but otherwise I am afraid there is nothing you can do. Make sure you keep a count of the kittens so you can be sure she expels all the afterbirth ...

Ok, is the kitten definitely dead? If it has just been born you can get your finger in its mouth to clear out mucus then rub it vigorously while holding it upside down, this helps get yucky stuff out of their lungs and get them breathing (never done it myself but seen it on TV many times).

I'd also ring the vet as if there are more kittens she may be in distress and need help.

CC think you are an overly anxious expectant mum bless you
Cats dont have waters that break like humans, occasionally a cat will pass a small fluid filled sac before the first kitten is born but not always.
First signs of labour is often a missed meal, there may be extra trips to the litter tray and when labour is under way you see the contractions in the form of ripples along her body.
Honestly the only thing you may smell is your own body sweat through stress
Usually there is very little mess, and most cats produce without problem,it is a good idea to have vets details to hand incase of emergency and maybe read up a little.
Not sure of statistics but I would say about 1 in every hundred pregnant ones i`ve dealt with have problems. So Good Luck and try not to worry
