Title: The Tortie Appreciation Thread
Post by: No Name on September 19, 2007, 18:07:09 PM
(bit of fun)

I know all cats of all colours and breeds are beautiful in their own ways, but I adore the Tortie, especially the very black ones with sprinkles of cream/red, and no white.

so lets show some Tortietude and post pics of the lovely Tortie cats and kitten we adore.

Calicos are welcome but this is for the True Tortoiseshell

I will start off with a photo of Ruby

thats Princess Ruby Red_ Slipper

I actually prefer the calico cat. My Tabitha Jane had the loveliest snowy white body with large torti blobs that gave her a unique and beautiful character all her own - Much missed my lovely Tabitha. :Luv:

THE TORTOISESHELL CAT
The tortoiseshell cat
She sits on the mat,
As gay as a sunflower she;
In orange and black you see her blink,
And her waistcoat's white and her nose is pink,
And her eyes are green of sea.
But all is vanity, all the way;
Twilight coming and close of day,
And every cat in the twilight's gray,
Every possible cat.

The tortoiseshell cat,
She is smooth and fat,
And we call her josephine,
Because she weareth upon her back,
This coat of colours, this raven black,
This red of the tangerine;
But all is vanity, all the way;
Twilight follows the bright day,

And every cat in the twilight's gray.
Every possible cat.

PUNCH

not mine just one I found

I've found, from my experience, that the dilute torties don't seem to have the bad/cheeky attitude that the big calico type torties have.  Also, I've noticed that the dilute torties retain their slim figures but the big calico ones seem to grow BIG (and have the flappy belly thing).  Does anyone agree with me?  They're all lovely, though!

A rare find in the feline world, a male tortoiseshell cat.

Title: Re: The Tortie Appreciation Thread
Post by: No Name on September 20, 2007, 07:27:33 AM
Thinking of owning a Tortie? please read on:

Tortoiseshell is a colouring found in cats caused by a combination of specific genetic traits. It is a mix of (red) and (black, chocolate and cinnamon). The pattern results in a cat with patches of red and patches of black, chocolate or cinnamon. The size of the patches can vary from a fine speckled pattern to large areas of colour. Dilution genes may modify the coloring, lightening the fur to a mix of cream and blue, lilac or fawn. Occasionally silver or ginger tabby patterns are also seen (sometimes called "torbies"). The description "tortoiseshell" (also called "calimanco" or "clouded tiger" in North America) is correctly reserved for cats with coats that have no white markings, while those that are largely white with orange and black patches are described as calico (in the US) or tortoiseshell-and-white (in the UK). Tortoiseshells and calicos are not specific breeds of cat. The tortoiseshell markings appear in many different breeds.

Temprament: All the female Tortoishell cats are known as excellent mothers and companions.

Interesting Facts: Torties almost always have copper or yellow eyes. (Except kittens). People often talk about the "tortie temperament," which says that torties tend to be very nervous and jumpy, sometimes have an 'attitude,' (commonly referred to as "tortietude") and are prone to hyperactivity. They are also very sweet and loving when calm, but are easily riled up and very high strung. Torties are almost always female. This is because the genes for color reside on the X chromosome, so for a cat to have multiple colors (i.e., black and orange), they must have two X chromosomes, therefore making them female. The few male torties are technically genetically defective and are sterile.

Tortie History: The Celts believed that a tortoiseshell cat was good luck in a home. The English believed that torties could remove warts if you rubbed their tail on the wart during the month of May. In Scotland and Ireland, a stray tortoiseshell cat settling in one's home is a good omen. To dream of a tortoiseshell cat means luck in love. In Normandy, seeing a tortoiseshell cat foretold death by accident. Edgar Allen Poe was devoted to his tortoiseshell Catarina.  She inspired his story "The Black Cat".  She sat with his wife during her illness and frequently sat on his shoulder when he wrote.

I have to say Brindle/Tortie are if I had a choice would  be the cat I would ideally have. Although I would never choose a Brindle/Tortie over another colour as  I always choose to keep on 'need'. In fact all my life I have only had 2 brindle's, one  when I was a child and one we adopted in the Isle of Man 21 years ago. Every time I see a Brindle/Tortie my heart just melts. I just don't know why as I would never ever give one any preferential treatment.

she chose us Ela, we were visiting Star our dlh who we had decided to adopt but couldn't yet take so we were on one of our visits while cleaning the pen she was in they let Amber out for a walk she jumped on top of a cupboard and straight into oh arms and licked his ear, as soon as I saw his face I knew she was coming with us as well!  my mother in law doesn't like her because she is not conventionality pretty but that makes me love her more!

Shame on you mother in law I say. If I was in that position  I would tell her (even if she was attractive) that obviously she was also at the back of the queue when looks were handed out. The brindle we had when I was a child was named Ugly (can't remember who named her) as her face was odd, but to me she was  pretty in a funny sort of way. I know exactly what you mean when you say it makes you love her more. I think your heart seem to reach out somehow in these situations.

He should not be piggy in the middle if the mother in law is wrong then she is wrong and there is no middle ground. Perhaps one day he will stand up to her.

Ooh, can't miss out on that opportunity.  Picture 1 shows my brindle Torti Pepper, who definitely does not have tortitude.  She is affectionate, vocal and a bit plumteous (but we are working on that) and the sweetest girl in the world.

Picture 2 is Jazz, a little torti-tabby that I fostered 11 years ago.  She is mum to my ginger boy, Buddie and definitely had tortitude.  She was a feisty semi-feral but a great mum.

Unfortunately I have photo issues, so can't post piccies ATM.  However, I can't read this thread without mentioning my darling Meesha!  Torti through and through, tiny and torti - with no Tortitude!  She's a fantastic mum though, even now that Sabby is over a year old!!  She is a very 'good' cat, and highly intelligent.  She's a wonderful companion, as long as it's only me and her!  She's so sweet-natured, and she has a little cream triangle on her left eye :)  :Luv:  Oh, and she has green eyes!

Lovely to see a torti appreciation thread!

WEll, I dont have a tortie in teh house anymore!! I am not a big fan of them, but should be getting another one when I get back off my hol - she needs a home environment, so will get it regardless of colour!! I have looked after 3 torties now I Think, 2 were brindle, and then there was Lucy. Not met a lot of nice torties though, but the one who is coming next is supposed to be nice, and Lucy was most of the time.

Tabitha Jane was nice with people. And she was generally good with other cats. Except when a new kitten made its first venture into the outside world when she would persuade it to run across the road :evillaugh:. She never worked out she had to wait for a car though , so they all survived. She was also murder on all dogs. None would dare enter the yard. :scared:

awwww you must have met them when they had PMT ,,,Puss Mental Tension......I have always loved the tortie cat so much that I have tried to get a kitten for the past 2 years.
I advertised on a site and was told that my beloved Mrs Moggs needed to be re-homed and so I took her in (she is a dilute tortie), then two years later I thought I would try again. This time I took in a white Persian who had suffered a lot in his short 2 year life, he had behavioural problems so he was taken in by the Persian rescue who rehabilitated him. so I thought, I would try once more. I ended up fostering the sweetest little feral kitten until she became  tame enough to go to a new forever home.

Now at last I have ruby, who is from a litter of 6, 1 ginger male Tigger whom my friend is having,, 1 tabby female Peach my daughter is having her and 4 torties females and I chose Ruby who is the darkest but has one red sock..hence her name Ruby Red_Slipper........at long last my tortie kitten is coming home .well in approx 14 days :Luv:

PRAYER OF A STRAY CAT

Please send me somebody who'll care,

I'm tired of running, I'm sick with despair.

My body is aching, it's so racked with pain,

And I pray as I run in the rain,

That someone will love me and give me a home,

A warm cozy bed to call my own.

My last owner neglected me and chased me away,

To rummage in garbage and live as a stray.

But now I'm tired, hungry and cold,

And I'm so afraid that I'll never grow old.

They've chased me with sticks and hit me with stones,

While I run in the streets just looking for bones.

I'm not really bad, please help if you can,

For I have become just a "victim of man!"

I'm wormy and I'm ridden with fleas,

And all I want is an owner to please.

If you find one for me, I'll try to be good,

I won't run away and I'll do as I should.

I don't think I'll make it too long on my own,

Cause I'm getting weak and I'm so all alone.

Each night as I sleep in the bushes I cry,

Cause I'm so afraid that I'm gonna die.

I've got so much love and devotion to give,

That I should be given a new chance to live.

So PLEASE, PLEASE answer my prayer,

And send me somebody who'll really care

yes. I obtained her under rather odd circumstances. She was at the home of a friend whose cats had just had kittens and was only 5 weeks old. I indicated I liked her and would love to have her but they refused. That night at the party, an old boyfriend gave me a really hard time (violent). When I woke up the next morning there was Tabitha Jane in a cardboard box on my doorstep. My friends way of apologising for the behaviour of their other guest I guess. Anyway, she lived a long and happy life in about three of my houses and would sit on the top of the fridge staring at new kittens like an owl (I had about 8 cats that that point, acquired progressively). After three days she would come down and start treating the kitten as if it was a new animated toy, tossing it around and generally beating it into submission as the matriarch cat does with younglings. From there on she would be really good friends with them until it was their turn to be introduced to the outside world At that point she started her - lets run flat out to the road and see if you can stop - game. The kittens fell for it every time and overshot to the other side of the road. After they had done that she was fine with them once more ... funny old girl.

OOOH,Thankyou, she was beautifull, they all are,tortie,tabby,.......they might have a temper but its not to do with the look or colour,i belive its the way us people treat them, piccollo was born in my place and she was tortie but beautifull nature, but DD was rescued and her privious owner treated her badly after three years with me she changed to a loving cat and yes she still had her moments but thats cats privillage :sneaky:

I agree that the problem is that torties look so different from other cats and I reckon they often get a bad deal and maybe the mother cats teach their kittens not to trust humans. So now the tortitude is so well bred in and l.......................... sigh

I know Sasa must have had a terrible life cos at 10yrs old she is so scared of everything, she loves sofas and lying under radiators  ;D

I dont agree that torties are like that cos of the way people treat them, I do believe it is genetic due to their colouring - if it was due to teh way people treated them, it wouldn't be just torties that had that kind of attitude.
Title: Re: The Tortie Appreciation Thread
Post by: Kittybabe (Ruth) on September 24, 2007, 09:12:13 AM
That can be said for all cats, I just think that "tortitude" has become stereotyped as a characteristic, which personally I find adorable.

Pav, or course I remember Piccolo. I can't remember the other it may have been before we moved in next door. I remember being excited because of Piccolo and Jessie being so close by.  Lisa had a couple cats that I recall one was a Tortie too wasn't she?   There was always one cat or another in the garden. Piccolo had a fetish for the hedera plant in Guida's garden...  :evillaugh:

I think its genetic too. Its the red bit, ginger cats, red dogs, chestnut horses often have that bit extra to their characters. Chestnut mares are known to be more difficult and theres some old rhyme to do with chestnuts and white socks  :-:

I agree and i'm more wary of gingers  :shify:. Buster my previous ginger cat RIP was much more aloof and aggressive than my tortie Mika and he lived with us since he was a kitten, so he didn't have the abusive background that Mika had suffered before we adopted her. I find Mika different from my other cats as she's more vocal and more demanding of attention, but not knowing much about tortitude, innocently I always thought that she may have siamese roots!!

INTERESTING FACT

OUR BELOVED TORTIE TAKES IT'S NAME FROM
ARTICLES MADE FROM THE SHELL OF THIS LOVELY CREATURE:-

The HAWKSBILL TURTLE  : Eretmochelys imbricata. The Hawksbill Turtle gets its name from its hawk-like beak. It ranges in size from 30 to 36 inches in length. This turtle's shell is the source of "tortoise shell", and because of this commercial exploitation has caused their numbers to dwindle. Their shell and oils are in constant demand, placing this turtle in danger.

Ickle

I just wanted to say thank you for starting this thread. Rosie was attacked back in April by 2 dogs and very nearly didn't make it. I was so cross and upset that I posted about it on a website that a few of the very good and supportive people from here (you all know who you are ) pointed me in this direction.

I am taking the dog's owners to Court and have today received a Court date of November 30th. I think we all take our family, jobs, pets for granted at times and it's true when people say 'You never know what you have until it's gone'. That is so true.

Thank you once again and I hope that Rosie knows that I love her so very much (even though she has gone back to her old, aloof, snotty tortie self!)

Sorry got a bit emotional after the letter, it brought it all back.

Love and hugs to all of you .xx :thanks:

Sweep says hi to Pippa and aren't we both beautiful ;) ;)
I fostered her when she was approx 1 years old with 5 ten day old kittens. They quickly found homes and Sweep just gazed at me with her head on one side and.....she won!! Unfortunately, she's not too keen on my boy that I adopted last July, but we're working on it!

Pippa's had that lovely thick fur all the time Ive known her (only about 6/7 months)....she came to me as a stray  :) I dont really know her age but the more I get to know her I do reckon she's an oldie cos of the way she moves, she has that "somewhere out there" look also.....she sits in a corner staring at the wall!!!  :Luv: :Luv:

We reckon she defo has her senile moments....but she is a real people charmer and adores kids  :Luv2: :Luv2:

When brushing her she does shed alot of fur but it looks more grey when on the brush!  ;)

I ewas looking through cat rescue sites today (as one does) and I've noticed there seem to be a lot more torties than I've noticed in the past.  Any ideas why or just a lot of cats that need homes?

After blacks and black/whites torties seem to be the next most likely to end up in rescue,or at least they do with us and usually pregnant or with a litter of kittens in tow.

I have say to Rossi doesn't actually have totietude she has something even worse .... Abytude    When she came to me she was a bolshy brazen little thing however after watching and learning from her Big Step Brother (Zephyr) she has picked up all his bad habits and combined them with her tortietude ..... She is now bolshy, brazen, sometimes annoying and  incredibly cocky but has perfected the "but I'm so cute ya gotta love me" face she knows she can get away with blue murder  :naughty:

Post by: Team Svartalfheims on January 08, 2008, 19:14:59 PM
Yes Sunset said she's definately a girl and not a very rare tortie boy lol. I think it's just where her markings are that make it look like she's got bumps lol. It's a shame she's got her front leg where she has so you can't see her delightfully spotty tummy. She is Miss Boopy in minature personality wise.

Poor Sunrise Sunset is the kitten I thought was a silver tabby boy for the first few days until the tiny red bit on her head became clear as that's the only red on her unlike Sunset who has lovely cream bits all over her and those 2 lovely cream toes.

The good thing about the colour of Miss Boopy and Alfie means that unless we have some weird quirk and get a tortie boy all the torties are girls and any non torties are boys so I don't have to spend ages looking at them trying to work out sexes  :evillaugh:

They were 4.5 weeks old in the pics (they are 5 weeks old now). The little boy in my avatar is their litter brother and they are half sisters to the gorgeous Poppy (LittleKitten) on here  :Luv2: :Luv2:

You wouldn't believe Sunshine is the same cat that I picked up from an Estate where the kids had been tying string round her neck and dragging her down the road. Her poor tail was red raw - just raw flesh at the end so she had to have part of it removed. It might have been frostbite as the kids kept putting her in the freezer. The caring mum got sick of taking her out of the freezer so "threw it (sunshine) out"  >:( - anyway, Sally another CP volunteer fell in love with her and dotes on her - I think her rotten past is forgotten  :Luv2:

Yes she is a calico and she is beautiful isn't she.She came home with me one day from work 'by accident' as she was in a dreadful state and not being looked after by her owners.Skinny, half bald and covered in scabs she was.Now she's a portly little strop bucket

Squid that lives with my Mother. She is still my baby as I raised her from three days old because her mother was run over. We decided it wasn't fair to move her from Mum's because she is older now and is quite shy so we didn't think she would deal very well with the move. I only live a few miles away though so we get regular cuddles  :Luv:

Hello! Hope you don't mind me resurrecting this thread. I've just posted on the newbies thread and got directed by Dawn and her lovely Amber to look at other torties because i've never had one before. I have to admit total ignorance in not previously knowing how many types there are, that torties are usually female and if male are sterile and the whole 'naughty tortie' issues which we are discovering on a daily basis LOL!

This is Atti (Atticus Bast).  She was born in a barn to a semi-feral barn cat mum.  I've only seen her sister, Tiddles who went to my riding instructor and Tiddles is darker, less fawn and ginger and no cute stripe down her nose. Still a lovely cat though!  We think they were born in August, so they're about 7 months now.  Enjoy ;)

I have to say once you are Tortied there is no way back

We always said no to Torties as Sweetie the Clan leader hated the one who lived next door and did some serious damage - she was a lot younger then!

The somehow we ended up with Amber and Sailor a feral duo we rehomed - one Tortie and one ginger and white then came Xian and her sisters so we had a brindle feral tortie, then came Miss gracie our longhaired tortie then finally Miss Gem and her brindle baby Beijing

I can honestly say there will always be a Tortie of some colour in the Clan they are just so Tortie!!!!! ;D

I don't really know how unusual it is, but there are loads of back street Siamese and Ragdoll breeders around here so she could have inherited them fairly easy, most mogs from town look slightly oriental/siamese and Indy looks very old style siamese in shape...

Either way I love her eyes, they are almost violet in sunlight :)

Dot wants to be in on this, especially as she has no "tortietude" (she says!).  She does have some white but she says it's all nice and neat and in the right place.

She is the same type of colouring as my Alice who is also on this thread. I think they call it calico?
Title: Re: The Tortie Appreciation Thread
Post by: kcsunshine on April 25, 2010, 19:56:01 PM
Really Mark? I had thought that calico was the white and tortie mix? I could be wrong tho; this is my first tortie. This girly has got lots of brindle and a muddled face and chest. We are trying to think of names. Flowers, Disney and lately railway related. Stuck tho. Kids in bed shouting out names to each other!!

If she has solid orange, white and black then she passes as calico, maybe not in the show ring where particular patterns are favoured masks etc but shes good to me! I have a traditional naughty torti lola who is calico and a poncy lump of hair thats some kind of snazzy torti, they are both extremely intelligent cats and show a different level of problem solving than the rest of my lot  :evillaugh: they also took an instant dislike to each other, lola also hates her doppelganger - lola the imposter aka pickle  :evillaugh:
Tortitude will take on a new meaning once you get her home  ;)

They are often floozy flumpets so you could put lady, mademoiselle (sp?) or princess in front of her name to make her more special (not lady ga ga  :evillaugh: )

I'm currently stuck on Ginny (G&T for me; Ginny Weasley - son loves HP; she was found near to Virginia Water) or Mojito (but I think that's boyish perhaps); Matilda (Tilly) as my daughter is like the Roald Dahl book; Lavender (as I like it); Strawberry (yummy and she has that strawberry blonde chest); Agnes (as we all love St Agnes in Cornwall) and beyond that I;m stuck.   ;)

Does twitter give you a storage area for files? - otherwise I don't think that will. work. You need to have it uploaded to a host that allows you to store files. It is worth getting a photobucket account as you can also post bigger pictures on purrs. When files are uploaded, you just copy a link code from photobucket onto purrs.

This is one I uploaded t photobucket last year.
