I dunno but I reckon if people were in some way influenced by Rog's poem into thinking cats offered for adoption by the CPL were in some way "Borstal Boys" or juvenile delinquents and were then put off the idea of owning cats for life, that mightn't be a bad idea - it could deter the less committed kind of cat owner......[/quote

That is exactly the thought of some people.

Damn!  You'll never guess what just happened - I was putting me blue rinse on, when I got some in me eyes.  I went for the towel, tripped over me bloody hockey stick and I swear to God I heard a cat laugh!     :shify:

I was thinking more along the lines of the "Jolly Hockey Sticks" WI garden party types

I know they still exist as my mum belonged to the WI until recently

I am sure the do exist, but we in our branch certainly don't have anyone like that,  in fact I have never met anyone (in CP anyway) that was remotly like that.  I just think if anyone says anything about cats we don't like (even if it is to make rhyme) we don't like it.

defo didn't read it that he was taking the mick or put people down in ant way.

It was not seen at a slight on CP but a slight at cats. What people say about us  goes over the head. My goodness if we worried about what people said about us we would have a nervous breakdown, often I am called a cow (when someone can’t have what they want, a cat for instance, also when they come out with something like that it endorses my decision)  but it doesn’t bother me a bit.

It is quite funny, only the old-school "blue rinse" type CPL ladies could be offended

Thank you Mark, but I have never had a blue rince in my life and and very young at heart.

I dont think its meaning the actual Cats protection but cats that are going about the neighbour hood offering protection.

It was the last line that people took offence to 'Those bad, bad cats from the CPL'.

And just to add - wouldn't want to offend any CPL'ers out there!

None taken, it is just that I know it cause much controversy at the time and I understand why Although someone at HQ must have approved it.

Don't think he would have intended to be derogatory Ela - most of his poetry is tongue in cheek

It would probably sound better if he read it out himself though. It was his voice I imagined as I read it
,

It could well have been him that did read it out, I cannot quite remember.

I doubt if it was really meant to be derogatory.

To be honest when I heard it I too thought it in very poor taste  and I was very surprised that he had written such a thing.

From what I know about  Roger McGough, I doubt if it was really meant to be derogatory. It would probably sound better if he read it out himself though. It was his voice I imagined as I read it, he has a very laconic way of talking.

It was read out initially at a CP meeting  a few years ago and caused a lot of controversy.

Cats Protection League - made me laugh
« Reply #1 on: June 07, 2007, 12:11:25 PM »
Midnight. A knock at the door.
Open it? Better had.
Three heavy cats, mean and bad.

They offer protection. I ask, 'What for?'
The Boss-cat snarls, 'You know the score.
Listen man and listen good

If you wanna stay in the neighbourhood,
Pay your dues or the toms will call
And wail each night on the backyard wall.

Mangle the flowers, and as for the lawn
a smelly minefield awaits you at dawn.'
These guys meant business without a doubt

Three cans of tuna, I handed them out.
They then disappeared like bats into hell
Those bad, bad cats from the CPL.
