We saw an advert in Pets at Home and it turned out they were six doors around the corner.

Hi there! I understand I have caused a bit of a hoo ha with my questions/posts etc in regard to Rescue Reviews.   :-[
I didn't realise it may be considered spam/advertising or whatever so please accept my apologies for that. You may not believe me but it was an un-intensional mistake. Thank you anyway to everyone who filled out a review or decides to fill one out in the future.  I have put together a list of FAQ's (should really be called AQ's!!) which are now on the website to clarify the situation/project.  I appreciate that if I 'send' you to the website to read them - I will be breaking another rule  :scared: so am attaching the FAQ's and answers here now.  :-:.  I shall keep in touch but I won't mention my project again!!! :-:

How did you come up with the Rescue Reviews project?  Anyone can start up a shelter or rescue in the UK as no qualifications are required and the sector is unregulated.  There are many organisations that are doing a fantastic job and manage excellent adoption volumes with very low return rates*.  However there are also many more who are struggling due to lack of experience or knowledge and despite best intentions, are not achieving their aims. The focus of Rescue Review is to gather and collate useful information as an aid to improve standards in animal rehoming shelters and within adoption organisations in the UK.  It is hoped that the dissemination of this information will result in improvements, sharing of best practice, rewarding of excellence and will increase successful adoptions and reduce the number visitors going elsewhere (puppy farm etc) to obtain a pet.

How did you decide which questions to ask?  By speaking to numerous individuals directly involved in rescue organisations (over the last 18 months) to develop the questions that would be of most use to them.

Why do you ask about the choice of animals available?  To determine and gauge success of open or subjective admittance and potential for breed or specie transfer.

Why do you ask about signs and directions? If people can't find a shelter - there is no way they can adopt, shop or give a donation to that shelter.  Increased footfall means more donations, neutering, vaccinations, chipping, treatment, education etc.  Signs are also a constant source of advertising to remind people you are there.

Will the shelter/rescue find out that I wrote the review?  No. Although you must submit your email address and I may contact you for further detail/justification about your review, your information is not made public. Strict data-protection is adhered to and your details cannot be passed on to the rescue/shelter.

Are the review categories given equal weighting in the star award that is allocated?  There is slight weighting in the ranking of questions with a bias on animal welfare however parking and merchandise are obviously important. I've seen cars turn away in frustration at an entrance, as no parking space was available. I've also seen very poor quality merchandise which I wouldn't recommend using on animals. On the flip side - merchandise sales can be an excellent source of income - which could then be spent on improving animal environs etc.

Are rescues/shelters notified when a review is published about them?  If necessary, I contact the organisation being reviewed to gain clarification on a policy or their views on a particular comment prior to publishing a review. When there are 5 or more reviews, I notify the rescue to provide them with their feedback.

Can I review a shelter/rescue that is outside of the UK?  No sorry. This project is UK only.

Do you screen or verify the reviews before they are posted?  Yes. I personally read each review.  I also have a checking system whereby I may contact the reviewer or shelter directly and request further information. I withhold all reviews that do not withstand scrutiny.

When you give the feedback to the shelters or rescues, do you sell them services or products?  No. Nor am I making any product or service recommendations.  I'm purely feeding back the information. It will be up to the individual shelters to make their decisions on how or whether they reward excellence, implement changes etc.

Do you help rescues or shelters to finance improvements?  No. Although there may be financial implications i.e. resolving a sign issue if people are unable to find the shelter, there may also be areas for improvement that are of no cost i.e. a policy or SOP modification (rehoming policy/cleaning procedure).

What about foster and breed specific organisations?  I appreciate the current questions are geared towards actual ‘shelters’.  Based on suggested received to date, a new review form is being written and should be live in September ‘10.  This will provide greater useful information to foster and breed specific organsiations.

Is a drug/food/pet supply or other company financing Rescue Reviews?  No. This is a project that I have personally developed. I carry it out in my spare time and am not getting paid.

Why are you using this format?
Rescue Reviews is based on a number of tried and tested review sites such as TripAdvisor. This decision was made after consultation with a number of review site professionals and a website legal specialist.

What feedback will the shelters/rescues get?  My analysis will pinpoint repeat problem or areas of excellence.  This information will be sent back to the shelter/rescue.  Organisations are obviously free to check on site to read individual reviews and comments whenever they like.

What are return rates*?
Finding someone to adopt an animal is a relatively easy task however finding the ‘right’ someone to adopt the ‘right’ animal is difficult, takes skill, knowledge and understanding.  Organisations will often publish their adoption rates, but the really important figure is actually the return rate.  This is when the animal is returned to the shelter/organisation because the situation has not worked out.  There are different return rates for different species – cat return rates are low, small furries are the lowest etc.  Organisations should be looking regularly at their return rates and focusing on how to reduce them.
End.
The more the shelters and rescues know about your views, the better they will be able meet your needs, improve standards & increase the number of animals successfully homed!

Plus the 80ish fosters in the last 6 years.

Wooah! 80 in 6 years! There should be an award for people like you!!! Well done!

IT's nothing compared to some of the people on here, as i rarely took in kittens and often ended up with the hard to home cats, plus the oldies (some of which called this their last home).

My list is rather long as I only adopt oldies, and seem to have a knack for picking an apparently healthy oldie that then turns out to have health issues!! As hard as it has been to deal with some of the illnesses and losing them, I am glad that they have had a home to call their own at the end, with someone who loves them, and only wish I could help more.

Current cats

Molly - CAT77 Shaw - I had wanted to foster her from the moment I started volunteering for them, but she was temperamental so the rescue decided not to move her. 4.5 years ago, she thought she didn't have long left, so I offered to give her a home life for the weeks/months she had left - turned out she was just depressed, and I adopted her after 6 months.
Zia - Pennine Pen - I offered to foster her when the cat she came in with died suddenly. I personally wanted to adopt her out, but the rescue disagreed, so she is still here.
Buster - Pennine Pen - I had liked him for ages, but wasn't an option to bring him here until recently.

Bridge Babes (just since i have been living on my own)

Charlie - through a neighbour, her owner had died and son threatened to microwave her unless a home was found, so she came here.
Tigger - CP, I couldnt bear a house without any cats, and she was the only adult available for rehoming. Only cat I have adopted under the age of 10.
Ginger - picked up from street, he kept being left outside by his owner, so I took him.
Snowy - Bleakholt, as a friend for Ginger. I wanted a tabby called Magic, but my friend made me take Snowy as she was rather an ugly cat - she blossomed in a home environment though.
Pebbles - sort of through CP, her owner couldn't take her, her son took her in but couldnt keep her, so they contacted CP - CP knew I was looking for an oldie, so rang me - ironically same day I lost Snowy.
Blackie - through Diddydawn, her owner had died and daughter couldnt take her, she was old, semi-feral with health issues, so didn't think a rescue would take her on.
Tiger - CAT77 - an ex-foster who hated people so homing chances were slim, and I loved her to bits.
Mabel - Oldham Cats - I was looking for an oldie due to Rosie (foster) and they said they didnt' have any but invited me to look around - I found an old looking cat in front of a fire, she wasn't on the homing list due to weeing issues, but they let me take her.
Sam - CAT77 - a foster who I kept when I changed rescues, as he had health issues

Plus the 80ish fosters in the last 6 years.
Please spay your cat

All my cats have been adults adopted from the RSPCA or CP, tho I have lived with cats who were not rescue. If I were to succumb to pedigree it would have to be a rosetted Bengal (tho I have a major soft spot for Gillian's Sasha :Luv2: )
:'( My beautiful Noah rescued 13/02/09, adopted 11/10/09, taken 11/02/11 :'( You deserved so much more.

Whats DHB Miranda? I am sure I will know as soon as you say

FIP is just the most dreadful of illnesses and sorry that a whole family had it

Dogs Home Battersea.  Which is now actually called 'Battersea Dogs and Cats Home' so I shouldn't really be referring to it as DHB anyway! :)

Migs came from a breeder although she was being classed as an adult cat (at 7 months) and she needed a forever home. Newbie (doesn't have a name yet) came from somebody who could no longer look after him.

RIP - Pud was living in a factory because the owner of the factory didnt want him at home... Buggle, from a breeder but developed FIP at 7 months old.

Ok I will have a bash at the Clan

Sweetie and the late Toerag - Kirkintilloch CP - 18 and half years ago and so started my black cat obsession

The Later Tiger - turned up at our last house a very nasty feral boy - Toerag wanted someone to play with so OH said if you can catch him you can keep him - 2 broken fingers and a wrecked bathroom and Tiger came to stay and so started our love affair with the ferals - he was also diabetic for the last 3 years of his lfe a great combo - a feral and needles twice a day

Lima and Clio - our "first" kittens - aged 11 months never having seen humans what a joy took 3 long hard years of taming!

Max and Merlin - the nice kittens we put our names down for - bought a cat box on the way to pick them up!

Haggis came from friends who were threatened by their landlord

Floddy again from friends as she has toileting issues!

Bert and Moose came for Christmas 2000 as Fosters - both golden oldies and somehow became one of my best Christmas presents ever - vets says to OH what the hell have you got ghere - bert was bald with stress and Moose was yellow and blac with a badly knotted coat!

I will add more later - there will several attempts as there are many with us and also sadly some not with us anymore

Fluffy came from DHB and belonged to my husband before we met.  (My husband - I got off the internet ... but that's another story!).  :briggin:

Oscar (RIP) was the retired 'dog tester' at an RSPCA rehoming centre.

Before that I had two Cinnamon Orientals from breeders (in the 1980's/early 90's). Otto died after inadvertently ingesting a spot-on flea treatment from his best friend Rocky the dogs coat (the products are much improved now and that wouldn't happen these days) and Toque died from FIP (turned out to be in the line and all his siblings died). :'(

In between I've had a number of fosters and hand-rears that have then gone on to permanent homes. :)

Sophie - HARA rescue (she was taken there by her owners from Hull and they told the rescue they did not want her rehome or whatever.  A homechecker for the rescue who knew me told me about her and said unless she could find a home she was to be put to sleep as most of the workers there were scared of her)

Timmy - Also HARA rescue (went to get a play friend for Sophie and they showed me this around 4 month old kitten and let me take him home without a home check.  They loaned me a pet carrier to take him home in and when I got him home noticed he was very timid.  Returned the pet carrier and asked a few questions and found out he was born feral and was the only one out of mum and the other kittens that they thought suitable for homing)

Baby - Grimsby & District CP (she was originally a foster of mine with 4 others, one was ordered to take for PTS aged 7 months due to having FeLV and FIV, 1 was way too old to be tamed, 2 others were returned back to the colony a week before bonfire night near to where they knew there was a bonfire and firework display held every year.  All had been with CP since December the year before.  Adopted Baby as she was the smallest out of the ones that came and was an almighty struggle to get her upto weight to be spayed)

Danita - Found me just walked in my door one February night, growled at the dogs and went to the kitchen and sat by a dish.  Advertised locally and in the paper several times and no owner came forward so stayed.  Turned out she is a Russian Blue.

Tia - Got told about her and went to give the owners phone numbers of rescues and they basically said so you not taking her so I will put her outside to fend for herself. They were saying she was 5 months old when in truth I believe she was only 3 months old and she had been got and the owner had just had a baby and could not keep her so brought her home in my jumper.

Miffy - Off the neighbour that could not cope as she would attack them every time they went near her.  Well what do you expect when she was kept in a bathroom from 4 weeks until 17 weeks when she came to me.

Domino - He came via a friend whose boyfriends sister had taken on her nana's cat when the lady died but she was already pregnant.  I had lost one of my other cats 6 months before which was male and these were going to be taken to a vets as rescues were not taking in as so full.

RIP

Tasha - dumped in a carrier bag which was tied up tightly in my front garden in October 2000 you know the night of the high gales, when Seven Oaks lost 6 of them. Sadly lost her to sudden renal failure 22nd January 2009

Whisp - Grimsby & District CP (he had been in the rescue for 1 month and as they knew I liked black cats they asked me if I would be interested.  When he arrived from the other fosterer he had a scab on his back 2 inches by 3 inches and the fosterer had not even noticed it.  Sadly lost him to Lymphoma aged 4 years 21st December 2007

It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all

Poppy and Charlie came from Lesley(Eight Lives Left) who's rescue I saw on CatChat local rescue list. They've been with us since Sept last year. Time flies when your being wrapped around their little paws.

Giving a home to these 2 little lovelies was the best thing we've done. Spoilt brats. :naughty: :Luv:

Chilli - before I found purrs I misguidedly got her from a free ad. Turns out it was probably no bad thing, I think she was younger than they said and wasn't weaned properly.

Dave - free ads but this time I wasn't actually looking but it was one of those "must go today, he doesn't get on with my dog". Turns out Dave loves all animals, including dogs!

Hmmm...OK:

Carrie came from the local RSPCA 15 years ago this month. Not sure about her previous history, they didn't seem to have any!
Jack (RIP) was given to me by a lady at about ten weeks old because she couldn't deal with litter training him. :tired: Took about two weeks, and he was good as gold after that.
Toby (RIP) was a last of litter from one of my friends cats after she got out before spaying. I think he was meant to come and live with me to meet my partner, who he doted on, and vice versa.
Parsley (RIP) came to live with us from my partners dads house. She'd been left there when his sister emigrated, but unfortunately his dad isn't much of a cat person and was feeding her on the porch and giving her very sporadic attention.
Sage was given to me to look after while her "owner" sorted herself out. The lady visited twice, Sage pee'd in the basket both times. She stayed and became a permanent family member..... ;)
Astryd was being advertised on a freebie site and I got worried about her being picked up for breeding. (She's very beautiful.) She was going to stay while we found her a home, but my partner and her bonded really quickly so she also became a permanent family member!
Darwin came from a Derby Rescue after he and his litter were posted on a neighbouring Freecycle. He's nearly a year old and a lovely lad.

All seven of these cats are special and amazing with hugely different personalities. I feel blessed to know them all (or have known them) every day. :Luv:

Willow (RIP) from rescue shelter in Paris (OH got her)
Clapton - SNIP Rescue (Society to neuter Islington's Pussies)
Kylie - CP North London Homing centre
Alice - Canterbury CP
DO NOT BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER ANIMALS DIE

I believe I am not interested to know whether Vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesn't. To know that the results are profitable to the race would not remove my hostility to it.  Mark Twain
