The original poster has not been on Purrs for 3 days , so hopefully she found a vet and her cat is OK.  She has been a member for a while , since June, so didnt trawl to find us for this.

I think we should give her the benefit of any doubt and I hope that her cat is safe, painfree and warm and dry.

Good grief yes - can you imagine trawling around the internet for a cat chat room when something like that had happened to your cat!!??

I would barely have stopped to close the door I would have been off that fast!

does anyone have any means of establishing whether the poster has actually logged back in to check for responses? If not, it was hopefully someone's idea of a joke (in very poor taste). If not, then I sincerely hope the poor cat has been to the vet and has had proper treatment for its injuries and trauma.

cant really see that climbing caused this???

Frantic scrabbling to escape would do it 

He was very lucky to get out as the water at this time of year is so cold.

Did you get him to the vets for pain relief? I hope hes ok

Blackcat is right - it is not like just tearing a nail, it is like wrenching it out and really painful.  Your vet will be able to check Winston over and give him painkillers.

damage to claws can also be a common sign that he may have come off the worse with being hit by a car
this is caused by them being flung across the road, and they try and stop with thier claws, causing the damage 
is there any other injuries to his chin, or any signs of scrapes to his limbs ??
cant really see that climbing caused this???

If it were me I would wrap a dish cloth or something similar soaked in cold water and wrap around the paws to bring down swelling

Hi and Welcome to Purrs,

I agree with BC he needs to get to the Vet ASAP ... it would also be advisable just so the vet can check him over fully especially seeing as he fell into the canal.  He may have swallowed water or may even have other injuries that he is able to hide from you (cats are very good at hiding pain).

Hi no he hasn't lost them he just hasn't got much of them left! He is fine in himself though, still the same cheeky chappy just wanted to know if there was anything else we could do beofre we pop him down the vets on monday! Thanks xx

Are you sure that Winston has lost his claws?  cats do shed the outside of their claws, I would be very surprised if he had lost claws just by climbing.

get him to the vet as soon as you can!! he has been seriously injured. Imagine how you would feel if you had torn your nails out at the roots - that is what your cat is feeling right now. He needs painkillers and meds as soon as possible

Hi there
My poor Winston today we think has fallen into the canal where we live and tried to climb out via a concrete wall and in the process now has no front claws just bloody stumps. He seems to be ok, he was a little shaken and wet and his paws a little sore. We bathed them in salt water and checked him over. Do we need to pop him down to the vets just to be on the safe side and do the claws grow back? Bless his heart! Thanks for the help in advance! xx
