Title: HELP ME PLEASE!!!
Post by: Furious Angel on December 14, 2006, 12:19:32 PM
my cat spooky is a very poorly lady, usually she doesn't want cuddles a lot or even much attention usually quite happy to stay in the background.
thing is
she got an absess on her head and with that she wouldn't eat much so she lost a lot of weight.
the very nice cat doctor gave her some medicine and some yucky tablets to swallow and said she'd get better.
she did
but she still wont eat
we took her back to the very nice cat doctor and her gave her some more medicine and some more yucky tablets to take
this was a couple of days ago
thing is she is no better at all and has got worse
she now can't keep any food down
she is drinking a lot thank fluffy god
but she wants loads of cuddles, can't move much, and she always moves her tail, the only time it stops is when she sleeps but this has stopped
i'm going out of my mind with worry and her brother is sad too!
does anyone know what this may be?
please please help me and my fluffy child  :'(

I'm guessing she doesn't want to eat cos of all the yucky tablets.

what does auntie/uncle vet think about it all?

Some things to try:

boil a small piece of chicken or fish and offer her both the meat AND the water it was cooked in (no salt) when it's cooled

offer her a little bit of boiled egg mashed up (not a whole egg, just a tiny bit)

see what vet thinks about offering her either some special cat formula or commercial cat milk

I do hope she feels better soon  :Luv:

Rebecca you beat me to it!!

You could also try her giving her kitten food .... this has lots of extra goodness in and will help getting the weight back on.

But i would definately have another word with Mr Vet.

Sending lots of hugs and postiive vibes that Spooky gets well soon :)

I really think that you should take Miss Spooky back to the Vets - if she cant keep anything down you really need some more advice.

Good luck xx

Good luck at the vets - they should be looking at this seriously by now, and not just relying on tabs given at home.

Also - give her TINY amounts at a time. Like, a teaspoon. Or half a teaspoon.

It may be that her tummy's now got used to being empty and that she's being sick because her stomach is reacting as if she's overeaten.

And agreed - back to the vet time, too.

This may be a stress-related thing - perhaps ask about feliway diffusers or spray, make sure she's somewhere quiet and feeling safe with no other critters around when she's eating (that includes human children!).

Angel if you go to links in the little boxes at top of page and into health etc there is a link in there for CRF.

I do hope your cat will be OK if she is put on the right meds, keeping fingers crossed

I think a bit was left out of the link - its www.felinecrf.org - that should get you to the site that many people believe is the 'bible' for kidney  failure cats - it is a wonderful resource. There are things that can be done for cats with kidney failure, including diet and medication, so no need to give up hope. One of mine was recently diagnosed and she is quite well at the moment.

Oh Angel that wasn't the news we were waiting for !

But as others have said Don't give up on her, this doesn't have to be the end.

Let me tell you about my friend, He had to carry his cat Tilly into the vets as she was so weak and unwell and believe me i didn't give her much hope especially when they found out that her kidneys were failing BUT with treatment and medication she is still here 18mths later and doing well !

How old is Spooky BTW ?

Keep ya chin up Angel - Big {Hugs}

nobody really knows her age but aparently from todays resuts she is quite an old lady (although looks like and acts like a kitten)
Title: Re: HELP ME PLEASE!!!
Post by: Desley (booktigger) on December 15, 2006, 09:25:59 AM
The vet will be able to give a rough idea of her age from her teeth, but just cos her kidneys aren't too good doesn't mean she is quite an old lady, esp not if this is after an infection. My apologies for the link, dont quite know how I got that wrong!!

well the vet thought she was 4 years 2 months old but we have had her for 4 years so this is not true :S also she was supposed to be about 5 years old when we had her :S

Sorry to hear about Spooky,  I just want to say that although CRF is a progressive condition that you could have more time together than you think. My cat was diagnosed 18 months ago (aged 17) and I was told 5 - 7 months would be a realistic timeframe of how long we had left together.  She does have her off days but 95% of the time she is happy and appears perfectly healthy.  I really do second or third the recommendation of www.felinecrf.org  There is a lot to take in but I honestly believe that without the information that I have learned from that website my little girl would probably not be here today.

Hugs to both you and Spooky, as Claire said we are all here to support you and help you through the times ahead.

Hi Angel,

Really sorry to hear about Spooky.  Enjoy the precious time you have left & I truly hope it's a lot longer than the two months suggested.  I lost my furbaby in the summer due to chronic renal failure, she had been coping with it for a long time, but I just didn't know what the symptoms were & left it too late for anything to be done about it.  However my Chico was nearly 19 years old which is a grand old age.  Just doesn't seem fair that Spooky has this condition so young.  Thinking about you & hoping that Spooky fights on for as long as possible x

Am crossing everything for Spooky. I know it's not the same thing, but mine and my sister's cats Sooty (who had FIV) was given a few weeks to live (in fact we were advised to pts) in August 1999. He died this year after 7 years with barely any symptoms apart from for the last couple of weeks. So don't give up!! Not until your cat does, anyway. :luck:

Angel I am so very sorry about Spookys bad new, I really am.

Has the vets decided on medication and treatment to help her ?

I have found that most vets are superb, but it doesn't hurt to do some investigationg (eg over the internet) and then suggest ideas to the vet. If you pose the question right, they won't mind. To me a vet is like a GP and sometimes you need a specialist.

Also ask them if they might consider contacting a specialist for some advice.

My mother in laws cat had kidney failure and a heart murmur 6 years ago. She lost lots of weight, threw up everything she ate. The vet was not hopeful at all. Everyday, twice a day I went round and syringed water into her and  tiny bits of cat food jelly. Eventually I mixed the water and jelly together. I was just something to keep her strength up and stop her dehydrating.

Slowly but eventually she pulled thro. She still has a few off days and is on permanent tablets but she is now 16 and doing pretty well.

So please, please don't give up yet.

i'm sorry i haven't posted recently, as you can gather i have been spending my time with my lady and crying my eyes out inbetween.
She had her kidney's flushed at the vets and they said this should make her feel better at least for a while, and although she is a little more active, she is definatly not herself which makes me feel that maybe she really doesn't have long left.
This however is by no means myself giving up, if there is treatment to be had then shorty will get it.
She has been put on renal food as it stops her kidneys having to work so hard, can anyone tell me if she can have treats every now and then? Only with xmas around the corner and her not wanting or having the energy to play with toys then treats are all i have left to give her and xmas day is her birthday...
I am reading the feline crf a bit at a time as it is a lot to take in, but now i know which one she has, i can focus my attention there!
thanks for all your support and i will continue to write here and let you know how she and i are doing.
love to you all,
jo

It's just your way of reacting. I was like that for a couple of days when Sooty was diagnosed with FIV  :tired:, so was my sister. Then the drugs to fight the secondary infections started to work a bit and Sooty became a little more demanding (maow, maow, maow, maow...) and we had to focus on getting him better. We all react differently, so don't kick yourself.

So sorry to hear the bad news. Kocka died aged 20yrs of this but had lived with kidney probs for a number of years.

It is very hard to live with a sick cat, especially when they get very demanding and I wish I had know about CC and all the people now here when Kocka was still alive.

Yes there will be sad days and the shock of the information must have really hit you but take one day at a time and enjoy Spooky to the full. always give a a special cuddle and stroke and a few extra nice words. Take loads of pictures and just try and enjoy all the time left.......it maybe much longer than you expect.

Never look back and think I wish I had done that, do it, so all your memories are guilt free.

Happy Christmas to you and Spooky, have a great one  ;D

Chronic Renal Failure - CRF - Frequently Asked Questions

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LIVING WITH A CRF CAT

If you are reading this, your cat has probably been diagnosed with CRF. Your cat may be newly diagnosed or has been fighting this disease for some time.
You undoubtedly feel overwhelmed, frightened and emotionally devastated by the news. Don’t beat yourself up about not noticing anything sooner; cats are masters at masking until they can hide it no longer.

CRF is a very complex issue and all things are relevant. I have tried to keep it as simple and easy to understand as I could. CRF is a progressive, terminal illness and not usually an immediate death sentence. Most CRF cats can go on to live for quite some time. I would like to offer some hope and support where I can.

Winston was 18 and half years old when he was diagnosed. My vet offered me little hope, so I set off, heartbroken, and started to read and learn as much as I possibly could about CRF and am still learning today. It’s not all plain sailing and we had many emotional pit falls but Winston’s quality of life was good and we shared each others lives for another 2 and half years. Winston died at the grand old age of 21 on April 4th 2006.

I am not a vet nor am I an expert on CRF but wanted to share what I have learned and try to explain in layman’s terms. I hope this may help you and your cat.

WHAT IS CRF?

CRF or Chronic Renal Failure is, in my opinion, a little misleading and I prefer to use the term Insufficiency as opposed to Failure.
It’s a term that classifies kidney problems, which eventually results in kidney function being lost.
As kidney function is lost cats are unable to filter, process and eliminate waste products effectively, resulting in a build up of toxins in the blood stream, making your cat feel very sick.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF CRF?

The signs can often be very subtle but usually include some or all of the following.

An increased thirst and/or urination

Loss of appetite

Vomiting

Weight loss

Dull coat

If you think your cat may have CRF, a trip to the vets for a blood and/or urine test will confirm this.

MY VET ADVISES TO PTS MY CAT

Vets may offer this option as it may be an easier solution for an owner who may feel that the cat is near the end or if faced with, what may be years of treatments to help keep the cat stable. Some owners may feel they wouldn’t be able to cope or afford on going treatments.
Many vets talk very negatively about CRF from the start which doesn’t instil much hope or confidence in the owner. It is important that you and your vet can talk openly and honestly with each other thus creating a good working relationship for the benefit of the cat.
Change vets or get a second opinion. Many vets are not very experienced with CRF, or they think that the owners won’t do what is necessary to help and care for a CRF cat.
No one can tell you how long your cat can live with CRF. Some cats may go down hill fast, while others may go on for years. Even cats with high kidney values can sometimes go on to live for quite some time.
Ask for a copy of the blood results and ask your vet to explain the values to you, and what your options are.
You know your cat better than any one else so follow your instincts.

CREATININE AND UREA ARE HIGH

Urea, when protein is broken down through the digestive process, ammonia is absorbed into the gut. The liver then makes a substance call urea from the ammonia. The urea then travels through the blood stream in the form of urea nitrogen to the kidneys, the blood is filtered out and the rest is filtered out as urine. This means that the urea test is to check the level of nitrogen in the bloodstream.
Creatinine is another waste product which is filtered through the kidneys. Creatinine can tell us more accurately of underlying kidney issues because diet, dehydration and stress affect it less.
Many vets will tell you these values and then tell you what the normal ranges are. It’s scary because it sounds like your cat’s values are exceptionally high. By doing this, your vet isn’t giving you a good reference.
Each cat is different. These values are variable and can be reduced with treatment or at least stabilised. Some cats are able to tolerate mid to high levels of Creatinine and Urea quite well.

For example
Normal ranges Urea = 3.5 – 8.0 mmol/L Creatinine = 40 – 180
Winston was stable for over a year with a Urea of 18mmol/L and Creatinine of 360 – 377
Although these numbers look high, Winston was comfortable. He had off days but mostly he was on good form.

MY CAT WONT EAT THE PRESCRIPTION FOOD

It’s always best to introduce new foods gradually. There are some mixed opinions about prescription food for CRF cats. The important thing is that your cat eats. If your cat won’t eat the prescribed food, try to find a food with the lowest phosphorus that your cat will eat. Senior cat foods tend to have less phosphorus than Adult cat foods. You may also want to discuss the use of phos binders with your vet. A phos binder will bind the phosphorus in the food in the intestine and stops it from being absorbed. A cat with CRF can‘t excrete phosphorus from its kidneys properly, this in turn may affect calcium levels which can have serious consequences. High levels of phosphorus will make your CRF cat feel very sick. It is recommended that the phosphorus level in the food you choose for your CRF cat should be under 1%, most prescription foods have a phosphorus level of under 0.5%.

TEMPTING YOUR CAT TO EAT

It’s very upsetting and frustrating when your cat refuses to eat. You may want to try the following.

Mixing some chicken or tuna into your cat’s food.

Try a variety of foods.

Sit with and talk to your cat while it’s eating.

Excess tummy acid is a big issue with CRF cats, ask your vet about Zantac syrup or similar to help settle your cats tummy.

Slippery Elm Bark may also be useful to help combat tummy acid.
Try mixing some tuna and water together.

Baby foods; just make sure they don’t contain any onion.

Try warming the food or adding a little boiled water to it.

Try assist feeding, sometimes if you can get a little food into your cat, he/she may start to eat on their own. Syringe a little food into the side of the mouth and not directly down the cat’s throat.

You may also want to ask your vet about appetite stimulants.

HIND LEG WEAKNESS

Your cat may have a potassium deficiency. Ask your vet about a potassium supplement.

MY CAT IS VERY SICK AND LETHARGIC

CRF cats are very prone to becoming anaemic. This can be life threatening and must be taken seriously and treated.
PCV and HCT are both values that can indicate anaemia. Your vet can prescribe Epogen or similar to help with this but my favourite is a supplement of B vits and Iron in the form of Pet Tinnic.

HOW WILL I KNOW WHEN IT’S TIME TO LET GO?

This is of course a very difficult time. Some say you will know instinctively, others that their cat let them know. It may be an idea to think about PTS before the time actually arrives. Talk to your vet and ask for their guidance. It’s very rare that a CRF cat will die peacefully in its sleep.
With Winston, it was under discussion for a week or two before; his age and ability to cope, as well as his quality of life were all considered. He was almost 21 years old and frail, his world had become so very small and he barely moved from the bed at this stage. He just seemed miserable and the bad times had now out weighed the good times. I couldn’t watch him suffer any more, despite my best efforts to help him. Sadly, the day after his 21st birthday, I let him go. He had had a long and happy life.

WHERE CAN I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT CRF?

There is a wealth of information on the internet about CRF. Try a search for Feline CRF and you will be faced with more sites than you could shake a stick at. Here are a few of my favourites.

Fingers crossed you can both prove the vets wrong, a lot of CRF cats have - some vets aren't very proactive about it though, and wont consider some of the things that the CRF site say will help, so I would ask your vet in general about things like Fortekor and Sub-q fluids, and if they are quite negative, ring more vets. There are also Yahoo support groups.
Title: Re: HELP ME PLEASE!!!
Post by: Susanne (urbantigers) on December 19, 2006, 08:50:48 AM
I agree with being proactive and questioning your vet.  It pays to be well informed yourself so that you can ask your vet's opinion on things like supplements and sub cutaneous fluids.  If your vet doesn't welcome you doing this I'd seriously consider changing your vet.

The other thing to bear in mind that different labs have slightly different reference ranges for normal values so sometimes it's difficult to compare values between cats or to say that a specific value is high or low.  eg the article Gill posted states that a normal urea value is between 3.5 and 8, however the lab that did Jaffa's blood test a few months ago defines the upper limit of normal as about 12.  That's why I second asking the vet for a copy of the blood results and discussing them in detail with him/her (the results should have normal lab ranges printed on it).

Sleeping all the time is a classic symptom of depression. It's nothing to feel bad about but you need to try and turn it round. Otherwise you will waste time and feel worse about yourself. But try not to beat yourself up cos it is a natural reaction.

You sound like a pretty switched on person and you clearly love Spooky. So you need to try and transfer your depression and start to get into some research.  You have plenty of people here who will help.

Perhaps you could diplomatically ask your vets if they could contact a specialist for you. I have said before, vets are like GP's and sometimes you need someone with more specialised knowledge.

I don't mean to make it sound easy, cos I know it isn't.

Sorry things aren't going too well, it is so important that Spooky eats, when Tiggy was diagnosed I tried her on all the various renal foods including the wet pouches but she wouldn't touch them. I was recommended Felix Senior by somebody from the CRF yahoo group.

It is lower in phosphorous which is very important in CRF, it's not low in protein which renal foods normally are but I had no choice but to feed it to Tiggy as she simply wouldn't touch the renal foods.  The foil tray type was more popular than the pouches for some reason, Tiggy ate it happily for around 9 months but has now decided it's the devils food!  Hope you can find something she likes soon, it really is important that she eats and keeps her strength up.

there are lots of senior wet foods, and wet is better for them than dry. I think at the moment though, it is more important to get her eating, than worrying about her eating her 'special' food - there are things you can add to their food to help if they wont eat prescription. Fingers crossed for her.

Yes, defnitely agree, as long as she eats something - so don't stress about the renal food and go with what she'll eat. Try the one Helen mentioned, because if its low in phosphorus then thats good. Your vet can also prescribe phosphorus binders which you just put in her normal food, if she won't eat any of the prescription ones or the Felix senior. Moist food is definitely better than dry anyway.

Very sleepy. I happen to think she might have had a stroke recently too. She keeps losing her balance and falling on her left side and she keeps twitching her head and left front paw, like she has the hiccups but doesn't. Can anyone tell me if i'm right by thinking a stroke?
Title: Re: HELP ME PLEASE!!!
Post by: Gillian Harvey on December 28, 2006, 13:43:49 PM
Hi Angel,
Losing her balance and twitching could be a variety of things. Twitching can be a sign of both high or low potassium levels. High potassium levels can also cause weakness, as can anemia. High phosphorus levels can lead to stumbling, poor coordination and weakness. Also, when acid levels rise, weakness can occur. You'll need to talk to your vet about this, because he or she can prescribe something to help these symptoms. Ask to go through the initial blood tests with your vet, so that you can get more of an idea whats going on, and work out the best course of treatment for her - there is more treatment available than just prescription diets. All the individual symptoms can be treated.

Is she eating ok now?

Please do speak to the vet again - I dont think strokes are that common in cats, and as Gillian says, it can be a number of things, and some are treatable.

I had my father ring up and get her an appointment and ask about the food and stuff but fathers being fathers they don't get the infomation you require! lol! Anyway, spooks vet isn't back until after new year so we have been told to ring up on tuesday and get her in. God bless her, she is starting to be noticably ill, not that others would notice, more things a mum would notice, y,no?
Title: Re: HELP ME PLEASE!!!

Angel, if Spooky is noticeably ill as you say, I don't think you can delay - Is there just the 1 vet at the practice? if so - then there should be emergency cover, if there is no emergency cover, then I really think she should be seen by another vetinary practice.

As I posted before, alll of those symptoms you described CAN be treated - but can be extremely serious very quickly,  if NOT treated, so please don't wait till Tuesday. I know its hard when you're feeling poorly yourself too, but try and impress on your family that this could be serious.
Title: Re: HELP ME PLEASE!!!
Post by: Sam (Fussy_Furball) on December 29, 2006, 15:48:25 PM
I agree with Gillian .... if Spooky's normal vet is away there should be someone else who will have access to her notes.  It's better to see someone who doesn't know her very well but can offer treatment than to wait for your regular vet to return and to find out if treatment had started a couple of days earlier the outlook would be brighter!  Sorry to be alarmist but cats can go downhill very quickly.

Hi Angel -

Hope you are feelin better.

You should definitely get Spooky to another vet if yours is not available. Tuesday is too far away and it wouldn't be fair if she feels worse.

Angel do you realise how heartbreaking it is for genuine cat lovers to read just how poorly Spooky is and to worry that he will not get the urgent vet treatment he needs until Tuesday.
If one of mine was poorly I would manage to get to the vet even on my death bed.

And i will get my spook to a vet. I am a cat lover. Aparently more than one of you realise. Spooky is not bad at the moment, infact she is looking rather good. Apologies if i upset someone with this but i don't feel that treating me as someone who doesn't care an awful lot is very unfair! This cat is my life and i never said she wouldn't go if i was ill, i simply mentioned that i was ill.
Thanks

Angel - your last post mentioned her starting to be noticeably ill, which is why we are all worried, cats are incredibly good at hiding illnesses. Vets have to provide 24 hour cover, so if her vet isn't available, there should be another vet who could at least look at her, and hopefully start some treatment that will make her feel better, rather than leave it till it is too late. We are not trying to have a go, but none of us want this little love to suffer.
Title: Re: HELP ME PLEASE!!!

She isn't suffering and if she needed urgent treatment she would get it. She will be seeing the vet on Tuesday, they will make her feel good.

Hiya

Im so so sorry your both going through all this, Im sending you more hugs from me and all my babies.

I just wanted to say before Bella was diagnosed with her kidney problem we too thought she had, had a stroke. Once her antibiotics kicked in she stopped all the funny behaviour of the twitching anf falling over. All she has had for her kidney failure is Synolux a 3 week course, she would not eat the special food either and I was advised to give her senior food Fortunatly she was on it before being taken ill as she hates dry food anyway

I really hope things start to get bettter and don feel bad about the sleeping, as someone said its a classic sign of depression and the thought of any one of us losing our babies is the worst kind of depression

Love and hugs from me and all my babies

Angel, your original post said she was 'losing her balance, falling on her left side and twitching', and you yourself actually thought she'd had a stroke - well if thats not serious enough to warrant a trip to the vets right away  - I don't know what is!

Then your next post said she was 'noticeably ill' - and yet you now say she's not suffering - sorry Angel, I beg to differ - if my cat with kidney failure was doing any of those things or if I thought she'd had a stroke, I would take her to the vets straight away - emergency vet, if mine wasnt available.

well you carry on and think that. Spooky is going to the vets on Tuesday and she won't be coming home. The v e had been told of her problems and has told us once again there is nothing more they can do for her. I would never dream of harming my babies in anyway, and i'm sure if u would have read the posts in the way intended then you would not have gone off on your high horse. I'm sorry for reascting this way but things are bad enough dealing with all this, to then get a vicious post like those!

Angel, no one was having a go at you, and Gillian's post wasn't vicious at all. All we have to go off is what you have posted, we can't see your cat. I am sorry that the vets dont think there is anything else they can do, it is an incredibly hard thing to accept, but if they are ill and nothing can be done to make them feel better it is the best thing to do for them.

Angel

Am gonna keep everything crossed for you and Spooky tomorrow in the hope that she just might be okay.

Sometimes posts aren't clear or can be misinterpreted

I understand people's concerns for Spooky when you said she was noticeably ill, I was also concerned. However, I think that people have to try and trust that if you are posting on here, then you are a cat lover and therefore will always do the best you can, despite anything else that may crop up.

Equally you need to trust that people who reply, are simply trying to help and offer a bit of guidance.

At the end of the day no one knows or loves Spooky like you. However, we all have animal welfare at heart and sometimes people feel they have to stick their neck out, in the best interests of the animal.

But we are all on the same side here. And I am sure everyone will be thinking of Spooky and you tomorrow.

I'm so sorry to hear this, Angel. I'm sure Spooky appreciates everything you've done for her and is glad that she had someone to love her as much as you do before she goes. It sounds as though you did everything you could and although it's hard, sometimes letting go is the kindest thing; not to you, because you'll miss your companion so much, but to them.

Take care and ((hugs)) to you.

Big hugs for your vet appointment.

I'm learning to fly
the world took me away,
but please don't you cry

And I chose you today
to try and be strong
so please don't you cry
and don't say that I'm gone

When you're feeling alone
just remember our love,
I'm up near the stars
looking down from above.

Remember our love
In a moment you'll see
that I'm still here beside you
when you're thinking of me.

i'd give anything to have my baby back. Spooks you were a wonderful pussy cat. Gorgeous and fluffy, cute and inspiring. My world has been left with a huge void that will never be filled again. You were always there when i needed you to cuddle and be sad with. You helped me immensly with the death of Robin. If i can be just a half of what you were then i would be a very lucky lady. There was nothing you couldn't do. You never caused anyone any harm and loved everyone. You loved time on your own and you loved time with people. I will never forget your tail that would only stop wiggling around if you were asleep or the mornngs you would wake me with a good morning face wash. Even little things like meowing everytime someone said your name so people knew you were there and listening to us all. There is an empty space on the bath now, and my desk needs a furry spooky doo to fill it. Sammie misses you terribly and i miss you as much as i love you. Wont you come back spooks? We need you. Sam needs you. I need you.
