Title: Hello From Steve & the big Mr George
Post by: Steve_R on December 21, 2007, 12:56:05 PM
Hello all, glad I found this forum and have been having a good read of everything cat related whilst waiting for my account to be activated.

Just wanted to say hi from me, and my furball Mr George.

I stumbled across this forum whilst trying to find out what breed Mr G was, as we dont know as we rescued him from a farm barn when he was left by his mother when he was just a tiny kitten.  His sisters all managed to climb a big ladder to find a way out of the barn, but Mr G was a scardy-cat and wouldnt climb the lader so therefore got left behind.

Anyway, I know he is going to be a mixed breed being a farm cat, but he has all the features, and especially the behaviours of a Maine Coon.  Is there any Maine Coon guru's out there who could take a look at his mugshots for me?

Thanks.

Here is the big man himself, 14 months old......

Hi Steve and Mr G  :welcome: to Purrs,

As you rightly say Mr G is technically classed as a "moggy" as he doesn't come with any papers but he does have the look of a Maine Coon or maybe a bit of Norweigan Forest Cat.  Whatever he is he's stunning and certianly looks like he has his paws well and trully under the table, on the bed, in the washing basket and whereever else he fancies putting them  :Luv2: :Luv2:

Thanks very much for the welcomes :Luv:

Yes he does tend to get the run of the house, and he loves to sleep on HIS bed, on HIS sofa, or HIS washing basket, etc etc etc :innocent:

He is a notoriously difficult cat to get a good photo of though, as he always seems to move just at the wrong time, and ruin a good shot.  I'll try and get some better ones tonight.

Oh, ok then, just a couple more photo's while I'm here, of when he was a kitten :naughty:

He is gorgeous, but as a farm cat, unlikely to have any pedigree in him - a lot of people think a longhaired tabby is a Maine Coon, but he is a Domestic Longhair.

Thanks for clearing that up Desley.  I was just flicking through a book of cats in the library and saw a picture of a Maine, and thought he looked similar, hence I thought I would ask on here.

We were initially quite hesitant about having a farm cat, as lots of people told us that they have lots of health problems, and behaviour problems.  However, he has grown up to be the perfect moggy for us, apart from his apparently bottomless belly! :-:

Hi and  :welcome: to Purrs  ;D

Just cos he was a farm cat doesnt mean he cant have some pedigree in him and I have just come back from my brothers who has a Maine Coon and he is the spit of Mr George!

Sadly Chester is scardy cat and have no adult pictures of him but Mr Gs face has the Maine Coon shape and they also have tails wich are the same length as their body and bushy . They are very big cats and and grow until they are 4 yrs old ;D

I would say that although he is a moggie he definately has Maine Coon in him.

Gill, you dont generally get pedigrees wandering round farms, and without papers, there is no way of proving anything.

One of the many pleasures of owning a moggie is speculating which, if any breed, may be present in it's background. While clearly he is not a pedigree (as he has no papers) this does not discount the possibility (albeit remote) of him being a purebreed. I would, however be inclined to suggest he is more likely a moggy of undistinguished background. Just look at those lovely colourpoint kittens we had on the site recently with a tonkinese dad. Lovely. It does not do to be too pedantic on these matters as it is really the owner's choice as to what their cat may be ...

As many of the rescues know, pedigrees get let out, dumped or just escape the same as any other cat

And I am sure a pedigree male is not fussy who his mistress is  :evillaugh: :evillaugh:
