Guinness has mild gingivitis any advice please

Jessica mum to Pippa ,Guiness and Widget definately had no problems with this.
Since Jessica always chose to keep dad cats identity secret we will never know about his dentistry

Ellie, Ollies sister does not have any sign of it and there were 5 kittens she had in the litter and only 2 with it.

Well they all love the logic gel  and haven't noticed the plaque off in their food 

Hopefully this will help and I shall keep an eye on their gums.

CC I wonder too, however, Pippa the boy's sister doesn't seem to be affected.

My Yagga has mild gingivitus.....he was diagnosed (says in belows post) he never eats biccies.....the vet said to keep an eye on it and to try to keep him as stress free as possible as stress can also aggravate it 

He has'nt had any probs with it though and he is approx 20 months old

Both my mums cat and my aunty's cat have mild gingivitis, this was noticed when they had the snip, the vet said no treatment was necessary. These 2 cats are brothers and came from a litter of my Ollie's sister, Ollie is very bad with it but I asked his sisters owner and she has never noticed anything.

Maybe it is hereditary?

It can be from teething aswell so dont worry too much at this point.
Other than logic gel and plaque off, chicken wings are good for oral health. Must be raw tho. Chewing creates saliva which keeps germs at bay. Break the wing into 3 at the joints and let them choose which size they like

The boys eat mostly wet but they have the dry down to graze on during the day. I see what you mean about eating it though 

Hopefully it will stop the gingivitis getting any worse.

I get the logic gel and plaque off from vet uk.  cheapest prices I think 

Personally, I would ignore the advice about dry food.  I don't think that helps dental problems at all.  I actually think the crumbs from the kibble can be more harmful than wet food (think about all the bits that get stuck to your teeth when you eat a cracker!)

Thanks for the advice I really appreciate it. I think I paniced because Guinny is so young and then with Widge too it seemed worse than it probably is, she says hopefully.

Susanne I remember about Mosi now bless him. Where do I get the logic gel and plaque off please? Like you I was really shocked but the vet didn't seem too concerned. She said to make sure they have dry food as well as wet, which they do, and keep an eye on it  Guess I just worry too much about my babies.

The boys are really good and let me cut their nails etc., so hopefully I will be able to brush their teeth

The main problem with logic gel is that they like it so much you're in danger of getting your finger bitten off!  Spose it's better than them running away and refusing to have anything to do with it.  I think.  Some usually gets somewhere near the gums and I still have 10 digits on my hands.

I was a bit shocked when I found out about Mosi having gingivitis because Jaffa and Magpie had never had any and every check up the vet would say their teeth were good.  It wasn't until they were 8 yrs old that the vet said Jaffa had some gingivitis and could do with a dental (but Magpie was fine).  So for a 1 year old to have it worried me a bit but he's fine and I think if I hadn't specifically asked the vet about it she would have checked his mouth and teeth without mentioning it because it is mild.

I give Lexy Logic Gel daily on her dry food, I have plaque off as well but have never tried it.

Lexy had mile gingivitis when she had her first check up well over a year ago and the vet didn't say anything about it this annual check up.

I would think you can treat it Ellie, without little fuss, but as Susanne says if you can get him to let you brush it on his teeth now while he's young and will get used to it then it will help in later years.

As for Widget I'd start with the Logic Gel and Plaque off for him as well, as a preventative measure.

Mosi had some gingivitis when he went for his first annual booster (age 1).  The vet didnt' say anything at first and only when I specifically asked about it (because somalis are supposedly more prone to gingivitis) did she say he had some gingivitis.  She recommended him seeing a specialist as she wasn't able to do more than say he had it, and the dentistry specialist would be able to say more about causes.  I think that was mainly because I use a practice that's primarily a referral practice so the general practice is done by inexperienced interns and also specialists are on the spot.  I'm keeping an eye on it and it's not getting any worse and he shows no problems with eating etc.  I do plan to take him to the specialist eventually, but may just see how it goes for a bit longer then take him back to the vet for a 2nd opinion first.  I'm giving him logic gel a few times a week and he has plaque off on top of his food twice a day.  Just had a little look at his gums as he's sat beside me and I think it is actually looking a bit better than it was when first diagnosed.

I guess the main worry with them when they're young is that it might be a result of something more serious than the gingivitis you'd expect in an older cat.  I'd just keep an eye on it and try to brush his teeth if you can (logic gel is good as you can let them lick it from the tube and my 2 love it.  I try to actually rub it on his gums sometimes).

Oh, I just posted about Co-enzyme Q10 on the other gingivitis thread!  Its recommended by holistic vets for mouth/gum probs, like gingivitis. You could also put Plaque Off in the food (my cats don't notice it) which will help to prevent build up of plaque, and therefore hopefully prevent the gingivitis getting any worse.

The boys had their snip-n-chip post-op check this afternoon and they both passed bless them 

However the vet noticed that Guinness had very mild gingivitis. She said no treatment was necessary buy to keep an eye on him and they will check him when he gets his booster. She also mentioned he will be prone to dental problems 

Has anyone any advice what I can do to stop the gingivitis getting any worse? I didn't think a 6 month old kitten would have dental problems like this. Widget's gums could be heading the same way, silly question but can it be hereditary ?
