Title: It's Bad News - UPDATE: Healing Vibes Needed For Misty - RIP 6 April 09
Post by: Stuart on January 19, 2009, 11:15:27 AM
original post http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php/topic,21148.msg373078.html#msg373078

Just recieved a phone call from the vet, it's the Worst news  :'( during the blood test, the lab in Aberdeen found Strange Abnormalities in Misty's Plasma
and had phoned the vet's to see if they could do another kind of test to determine what it was, Misty has now been diagnosed with " Lymphosarcoma "
( Cancer of the Bone Marrow ) I had a very good/long talk with the vet going through all the option's chemotherapy/steroids and the side effects, but
just like Misty's CRF there is no cure, I was also told that even if I put Him through this it still might not add any longevity to his life, there's just no telling?
I had asked would he be in any pain if I decided not to go through with the Treatment (because of His age) and was told Just like the CRF condition there
is no pain, It'll just make Him feel a bit Lousy every now and then. The vet also told me that it was this that Caused his CRF to begin with, and His new
blood result's have confirmed that the state of His Kidney's have worsened over the past year.

Can't really think of anything else to say at the moment, I feel so Rotten and Down  :'( :'( :'(
Misty's been with me for such a long time (My First Pud)

Prognosis from diagnosis is 2 - 9 month's

Sorry to hear the bad news. I think you are doing the right thing saying no to chemotherapy, esp if he will be in no pain without it.

Hugs to you both.

Sorry for the bad news for you and Misty - its never what we want to hear is it

On the plus side he is still Misty and you are still his Dad so that bond hasn't changed its only the time factor that has been moved

Stuart you will love him while you can and I'm sure more treats are coming as are the cuddles - by the way vet should ask the cat re the time parameters all ours have outlived the time frame the vets gave them and we got them for that wee bit longer

Its a very hard outcome but at least you still have your boy and thats what makes this day and all the others he still has with you worth it

Thanks Guy's,
although this past month Misty has had a couple of bad day's , not really eating he's just licking the gravy off his food
still been lapping up his milk and drinking water
Right at this moment He's as bright as a button and is currently tucking into a large piece of freshly cooked Salmon
Looking at him tucking in, I still find it hard to digest that I only have a limited amount of time left with him :'(

can't think of anything else to say, I wont let him suffer

Thank's again for your understanding and support

Really so sorry to hear this Stuart  .

It's so very difficult to get a time limit out of your head once a vet has mentioned something but we all know the vet can't really know how long Misty has left.  You always knew Misty was getting on and has a limited span like us all. Try to think back to that reality not the vet's guess and enjoy Misty as he is now

I am so sorry Stuart and know exactly how you are feeling.

I try to tell myself that Franta is no worse now than he was before I knew the story and thats working better now but its taken all month and unlike Misty he never tucks into nice food.

I think that you must tell yourself the same and then it sorta calms down until they have a bad day........sigh

Its the shock of actually being told and the time it takes to sink in and then the misery.

Like everyone says take each day one by one and give him lots of cuddles from me and franta sends furry headbuts and pushes and a meowwwwwwwwwww

Post by: Stuart on January 20, 2009, 15:16:39 PM
Thank's again folks
I look at Misty now and He's still Misty :Luv: although today he's back to gravy licking again  :(
Like you say Gill, just because I now know what's wrong with Him, He's still the Same, untill they have an off day  :(
then it all hit's home and the misery set's in  :'(

the vet also told me that it won't be the cancer that will take Him (although that is the underlying cause for His illness)
but it will probably be kidney failure. (this is bad) but I feel a wee bit of relief knowing that, and will know what to look out
for and what to expect as I went through the same with Hamish

as you have all said, I will now be Taking it day by day

Thank You all again, Your support means so much to me

with Bluto (he died of kidney cancer so might not be the same) the first sign he was going down hill was a lack of co-ordinatation - not trying to scare you or upset you but its worth knowing because I didn't have a clue - I just put it down to him getting on a bit

I am sorry that the bloods didn't show anything more positive Stuart, I think you are doing the right thing by not giving him the treatment, and I do hope he exceeds the vets expectations. While deep down we know our babies wont be with us forever, it is news like this that hammers it home, and makes things hard, but he will enjoy life regardless, he has no concept of time in that respect, and just treasure every day with him, and make sure you have plenty of pics and happy memories.

I'm so, so sorry.

Doubtless you know that cancer just took one of ours.

All I can say is what Ed-puss taught me in the last month or so - he doesn't know what's happening - treasure every day - try not to think about what's coming (I know, I couldn't stop myself, but try).

And it's true that you'd know if he were in pain, so don't worry about that.

Misty has eaten very little in the last 2 day's and He is now refusing to touch the milk and his water intake has reduced also :'(
I was back at the vet's yesterday, and had another long talk with Her to see if there was some way of kick starting him to eat??
I've now got half a pill to give him, to increase appetite, and a course of steroid pill's which may perk Him up a bit (no side effect's with these)
He has eaten some raw chicken today and licked all the gravy from three pouches + had some tuna brine, and I'm currently making up some
chicken broth for him (a simple recipe I found on the internet) so will see how he goes with that
there was no stool in the litter tray this morning but he'd weed a lot  :( which is making me worry even more, Hamish started doing this and it
was only ten day's later he was sent to the bridge :'(

He still seem's bright in himself, but i know if he doesn't start eating soon He will go down hill very quickly
I will see how he goes the rest of the day, but if there is no improvement, I will give him the appetite inducer and start the course of steroids
tommorrow

I wonder why the vet has chosen tablets? my vet gives Schui a steroid injection and it's brilliant, I suppose your vet will have her reason though.  Also if he hasn't eaten very much he probably doesn't need to go to loo.   I hope Misty starts to eat more soon, loads of positive vibes for him

Sometimes 1/2 a valium tablet helps - Beavis has a steroid injection and it did naff all, but the valium kick started his appetite.
Title: Re: It's Bad News
Post by: swampmaxmum on January 22, 2009, 17:26:23 PM
The steroids should help his appetite and I think the pills give a steady dose rather than the whammy of the injection, which is a lot stronger than prednisone. You can also play around a bit with the dose to find the right one for him.  Sometimes they make cats drink and wee even more often (and sometimes not, just a warning in case it worries you more). One thing that puts my Swampy off his food is that even moderate CRF can cause indigestion or stomach acid. You could ask the vet if he's got any Zantac as Pepcid's not available here any more. I think UK vets now use Zantac? If he's not left you a nasty to clean up, he could be off his food from constipation? Hope things are better tomorrow

Post by: Stuart on January 23, 2009, 00:52:25 AM
Well the rest of the day Misty made no progress eating wise (although he kept running to his feeding area even though I had tried him with
everything I had, hi-life 70% fish cat food, the chicken drumstick's-carrot-potato-stock cube-teaspoon of catnip all simmered into a broth +
slices of thin cut chicken and every tin/pouch of catfood i have in the house  :(
my OH(nurse) suggested trying the steroids as they are the same as the ones humans get to perk elderly people up and put on weight too
within half an hour He was eating /drinking everything that was on offer (not over indulging) just small amount's, and has even passed a stool
(although that wasn't very well formed) but that was kind of expected because he hadn't really been eating
I haven't given him the appetite inducer, will see how he get's on with the steroids
the steroid pill's are called prednisolone 5mg ( x 60 ) misty is really good at taking pill's....thankfully
the vet did mention the injection and how strong it was, and decided to see how He got on with the pill's, leaving the injection as a last resort
as for the indigestion & stomach acid, i have been giving Misty Sippery elm bark, which i think is working ??

thank you all for you support and concerns
i will keep you all updated how it goes, still taking things one step at a time

Stuart + Misty

Thank you Stuart, probably why Schui had the injection then as we thought at the time we may lose him - although the injections (he's had a couple in the past as he could have nasal growth) take a couple of weeks to kick in he is now a different cat.

Brilliant news about Misty!  ;D

good news about Misty, Stuart. If he does have to be on steroids for ages, I've read (vet disagrees on its importance, but I don't) on a vet site on the web that it is better to give them at night. Something to do with cats' natural production of whatever by the adrenal system as they are more awake at night. If constantly given in the morning - unless you have to, I have to give every 36 hours so have not much choice with Swampy - they over time impair the cat's ability to manage stress. I've really found that to be honest. But I couldn't cut his steroids as they help too much in other ways. Even if it's masking the real problem, they feel better and eat and that is surely what it is all about.
What they do do is lower immunity so if he's on them for a while, he may also have to take some a.bs.
I've been told by 2 different vets that cats handle long/er term use of steroids quite well, unlike dogs, so not to worry if they are working and he's feeling better. But the best dose is the lowest dose at which you get good results.

So glad that Misty has eaten something - sending love, huggles and positive vibes xxx

Big    for you Stuart - I know how hard it is when they refuse to eat, I can remember sitting on the floor with Amber and trying every food I could think of and just crying and begging her to eat something.

Glad that Misty has eaten - it's so nerve wracking when they won't.

When Dinah has bad tummy acids she refuses to eat, hovers over her water dish and smacks her lips all the time so it sounds as if the slippery elm is working for him.

Re: steroids, our vet agrees with swampmaxmum - they are better given at night as the withdrawal is less rapid that way.
Title: Re: It's Bad News

Misty has currently got 4 different food bowls to choose from, ( not really sure if thats the best idea ) the chicken broth, fishy cat food,
senior cat food, and the milk. He hasn't done too bad today, and i say he's eaten more of the fishy food than anything else
(about quater of a tin) still gravy licking of the senior food though  :(, had some milk, had some chicken broth
(although he doesn't seem so keen on it now) and he's drinking the water, but still no where near like he was

not sure what to do about the steroids though, the perscription says 1x5mg pill twice a day, I was giving 1 in the morning and 1 at night
should i cut out the one in the morning ?? and just give him one at night ??

thanks again guys

Misty might like Hermanns food: I've just bought some for the first time and it's really sloppy - the consistency of porridge or pottage.  Blip loves gravy and she loves the Hermanns.  I got it from Zooplus.

I'd stick to one tablet in the morning and one at night - as he's having two they won't be wearing off inbetween doses so the withdrawal thing won't matter as much - if that makes sense?
Title: Re: It's Bad News
Post by: Stuart on January 24, 2009, 16:26:42 PM
Thanks Baggy, yes that makes sense ( how's Dinah keeping btw ?? )

Thanks Christine, we have a couple of pet shops in fraserburgh, will see if they have it as they have a wide variaty of stock
Just wondering though??  how long does zooplus take to deliver an order ??

Misty is still nibbling away at the food I chase him around the house with, but it's so frustrating !!  ;D when He eats something
and  :'( when He just turn's His head away (but like OH pointed out, with him not eating properly recently, his stomach has
probably shrunk, therefore he doesnt need so much food to fill Him up) I want Him to eat like he used to :(

He has eaten a big piece of salmon today, along with the fishy cat food and has maybe had about half a pouch of senior, and I'll
try him with some more raw chicken later on tonight.

there were these treats I was giving him for the last year called Pit'r pat, and He goes daft for them, but I have been having
difficulty getting more (they are very popular apparently) I have scoured uk websites selling them, and most say not in stock!
I did find a website and ordered 20 tin's , just to recieve an e-mail 4 days later telling me "they are sorry, but we have none left  >:( "

Last week I bit the bullett and ordered the Tin's off an ebay seller from America (thats where these treats are made)
I just hope they get here soon  :(

I've always found Zooplus extremely efficient: I ordered food for Blip last Saturday and had it by Wednesday.  Would you like me to send you a pouch to see if Misty likes it?  If so, PM me your address and say whether Misty would prefer fish or beef

I thought he was going off His milk, but I caught Him earlier drinking some, so that is good, He has also made a Large healthy looking deposit in his litter tray  :evillaugh:

for fleeting moments I'm happy, but it's now always in my mind that He has Cancer and it will be just a matter of time :'(

( As with all our furbabes ) I have lost count of the times I have seen Misty being cheeky/funny or cute and thought of getting it on film or a photo, and I regret
myself for thinking " I'll get the camcorder/camera out next time " I do have a lot of Photo's of Misty, but am now thinking of all the missed Opportunities  :(

anyway as some of you may know, I entered Misty into our local pet show, and He won the category of "Best Veteran Cat" I just got round to getting a photo tonight  :-[

It sounds as if he has eaten well today  ;D.

Dinah is doing a bit better thanks Stuart, she is eating well and quite bright in herself but not definitely not as well as she has been.  Bonnielass is right, we should be enjoying time with our babes but it is hard at the moment - when she eats and purrs, or nags me to light the fire I feel so happy, then catch her looking a bit sad, or she doesn't enjoy being fussed and I'm all down again.

Even though we can't change what is going to happen, at least we know we will do our absolute best to make sure our babes are comfortable and spoiled rotten so I hope we can take some comfort from that.

That's a lovely photo and memory for you to keep Stuart  :Luv2: I too regret not taking more photos of my previous cats as I think we all regret things at times like this but we still have the memories in our hearts and they never go.

Thank's Bonnielass, Misty is so so, he IS eating and drinking more, but when I put food down, I usually find myself waiting with Bated Breath
to see if He'll eat it, I'll lay it down in front of Him, and go out of the room Listening to see if he's eating (I don't want to distract him) I have tried
the coaxing and giving Him encouragement to get him to eat something, but have found it makes no difference whether I am doing that or not
it all depends on if he want's to eat, he had a bad day yesterday, and did not eat very much, just some raw chicken, I went down and bought
more chicken legs for him and also diced raw steak( he had a couple of bit's of raw steak and that was it. I'd also popped into Lidl's an got some
cat food to try him with (Opticat Supermeat, comes in 100g tin's) and He Liked it, during the rest of the afternoon to this morning, He'd eaten
two tins (200g) I went back to Lidl's this morning and bought more, but so far today He has only eaten about 25g's

as for myself I am still  :( because I know He wont get better.........only worse  :'(

Just glad I am at Home to nurse Him, was supposed to be back to work last saturday but that's been put on hold (still getting paid though)
which I'm really glad of because (although OH would do Her best for Him) I know I would just be worrying all the time about him

Misty has tooken to sleeping on/in one of my jacket's (camera is always at hand now)

Curled up Cosy

Very Cosy

Maybe too cosy, jacket probably making him  too hot

Sounds much like Franta but he never eats anything but jelly or gravy and a few biscuits. I stand over him  watching to see the other cats dont disturb him but nothing else I can do really.

He spends most of his time sleeping on the days that I think are his bad days and on the good days he drives me up the wall shouting and pushing and shoving to be on my knee.

Its so hard and I am sure somme good weather would help.

I didnt know Misty was a blue cat and he looks gorgeous..........I reckon he has lots of life in him still

Im glad hes eating a little bit, perhaps little and often may be better for him :Luv: I love the pictures of him ,his coat looks like velvet with that sheen on it and he looks very content all stratched out, its so hard to believe looking at him that there was anything amiss, and i know it must be so hard for you and my heart goes out to you, i wish i could say or do something to make it all go away but unfortunately that isnt possible :( so all i can offer is take pleasure in every minute with him and make sure that camera is always to hand to capture all those silly little things that make treasured memories

Thanks Guy's
That sound's exactly the same as Misty, He's spending most of his time sleeping also, and when he wakes i bring the food to him (usually work's) He is still
bright and happy looking when he is awake, but I can still tell He is unwell ( or maybe thats just because I know He's unwell, if that makes sense?? )
Misty does no head nipping to get on my knee, He'll just quietly walk in and sit down next to me till I pick Him up.
Yes and I do think if we had some good weather that would help too

Gill, You say that you didnt know Misty was a blue cat ?? LoL, thats kinda how he got His name, didn't know what to call Him when I first got Him, but with His
blue eye's and a slight tinge of blue through His coat, this colour reminded me of the Mist coming off Loch migdale in the morning when I stayed with my
grandfather during the holidays, So I called Him ( Misty Blue ) " Misty " for short

aye Bonnielass, the little and often is the route I am taking, and so far today He has had nearly two tins of the Lidl's food again, sfunny, you buy the most expensive
stuff and He wont look at it, but will happily eat the cheap stuff  go figure ??
I dont know if my mind is playing tricks on me but I think He has putten a little weight too?? or maybe it's just wishful thinking

anyway, I have managed to get my scanner working and have scanned in the only decent photos of Misty when He was ickle, back in 91
these were taken with a cheap camera so the quality is not too good, and they dont show the blue tinge
I got a bit upset doing these because it just made me realise how long I've had Him  :'( but I just felt the need to share  :shy:

Misty playing with the Rug Tassle's - note - just remembered, by the looks of his tummy, He's still full of worms at that point

I know what it looks like he is doing  :-: but I can assure you He's not !!, this was Mistys first experiance of being outside up at my grandfathers
He was going daft running about everywhere!! the amount of photo's I took that have no tale/head etc

This was an attempt at a close up with the cheap camera, thank Goodness for Digital nowadays

Of course you will get upset looking back to when Misty was a kitten :Luv: so cute, 18yrs is a long time to own such a beautiful cat and im sure over those years you have a million memories and photo,s  charting  the roads you travelled together, this is what stays in the heart and neither time nor man will ever erase those wonderful memories. Im sure you have given Misty the very best any cat could wish for . :Luv2:                                           It always amazes me as you say you buy the best and they only want the cheap stuff, but what the hell if thats what he wants thats what he gets as long as he is eating  thats the main thing, you say you think hes put some weight on, maybe he has if hes not so active but still eating, .                                                                          Anyway take each day as it comes, some may be bad , some will be good but through it all hes still your baby and you will do your best by him no matter what. God Bless and lots of hugs for all

I was going to suggest taking the food to him, it works a treat with Schui when he was last poorly I kept taking it to him on the sofa (where he always sleeps) and feeding him, trouble is he wants that all the time now!  lots of love to Misty, the photos are just so cute xx

Yes I take the food to Franta too and as Misty is eating so much, he may have put on weight. I was shattered when the vet weighed Franta in early Jan and he had put on weight, now I need his fur to grow again.......sigh

I think we are tainted by the fact that we know they are ill and we are watching and waiting for signs that they are getting worse , instead of just getting on as normal......whats normal!

At 18 years old its normal that Misty would sleep more and not be so energetic and the same with franta at 15 and half which is probably as good as 18 yrs for his breed.

I so understand how you feel and my late Kocka was a blue cat but with yellow eyes and she stayed with me for 10 years and came to me around 10 yrs old.

Oops, sorry Bonnielass, Misty is eating so much (maybe too much) and drinking normally too  :wow:
I cleaned out our local Lidl's of the beef flavour and had to go to Peterhead to get some more, I
bought another 22 tins on friday and have only got 8 tins left = 4+ tins a day, but this is bringing
up another problem, Misty still has CRF and is supposed to be eating a low Phosphorus diet, He
wouldn't eat the royal canin food I bought, so I had been feeding him on senior until he stopped
eating alltogether, now I am afraid to change his food or mix binders into it in case he goes off it
again. But if I keep feeding him the normal food the way it is, it may speed up His kidney failure  :(

Misty is still putting on the weight, and is happy :Luv: specially in the morning's where he'll run about
for 10 - 20 minutes before retiring to the bed for the rest of the day, only to get up for the lav
(I am still waiting on him hand and foot, and have a lap tray for his food and water)

still taking it day by day (even though He has improved a lot in a few days)

Stuart, please don't think you will speed up his kidney failure by feeding normal food - you've said yourself he's putting on weight - thats a good sign, and as you know its more important that he eats something (anything). I think you are right not to rock the boat.

I wouldnt worry about it speeding up his kidney failure, at the end of the day, if he wont eat, he will feel worse, and have a poor quality of life - and with illness, quality is way more important than quantity. I agree about not rocking the boat with binders though.

Hi Stuart,im glad to hear things are well so far and that Misty is eating well, have you tried  Hills prescription diet K/D(gold top ) this is especially for kidney failure and has reduced  phospherous  and as its mostly fresh chicken it should also help with his weight altho i think as Gillian said if hes putting on weight that cant be a bad thing and the fact that hes happy will make a difference.   I think your right just take each day as it comes and try to remain positive.

Hi Stuart.

I found with Tiffy that he wouldnt eat the renal foods available so I used Ipakitine phosphate binders. They should only be used for six months max though. At the end of the day, If the cat is eating any food its better than nothing. If blood toxin levels are high, then the cat may develop mouth ulcers that can cause pain on eating so if Misty is eating then thats good.

I don't know how you would feel about asking youre vet if they would teach you how to give subcutaneous fluids at home. It really helped my Tiffy when he crashed, but its something I felt comfortable doing as I am a trained nurse.

I truly believe it gave Tiffy 2 more years with me learning how to do that. I just wondered how you felt.

As the kidneys function deteriorates, it can be useful to have means of rehydrating the cat safely. Especially if it feels sick due to increased toxins in the blood (uraemia). Giving subcutaneous fluids helps to flush them out. You don't have to worrk about fluid overload as subcutaneous fluids absorb more slowly.

I did a instruction thread on how to do it:

Vey pleased that Misty is eating well  :)
Schui won't eat renal food but my vet said eating is more important and we agree quality of life than quantity, Schui eats what he wants but is a happy boy.

Thanks Peeps, Misty is still eating and drinking like a horse, I am getting OH to give him his steroid pill's, because I dont think he likes the taste :P
and he was starting to sulk with Me when I gave them  >:( Still chews his Fortekor though  :Luv:

about the sub-Q's Philip, the short answer would have to be no, I lost my Hamish through CRF (it was very well advanced, & I still regret/blame myself
for not noticing the sign's  :( ) Hamish did go into the vet's and was immediatley put on a drip for 24 hrs, which did help, but he lost all the fluids within
1 - 2 days, the vet did mention about doing sub-Q's at home, but due to his age (17) and the fact I knew he would not like being prodded and poked
with needles, if Hamish had been younger though??

But it is the same with MIsty, He'll nearly be 18, and I don't want to start poking him with needles either, also on top of His CRF he has Cancer too, It
has been a hard decision, but I dont want to prolong his life as the CRF / Cancer progresses.

at the end of the day He has reached a very respectable age

for now misty is eating and is happy, and I'm just taking/treasuring each day as it comes

Stuart am so glad Misty is being a good boy and now getting OH to be the dreaded pill person - I tend to do the same then they love me!

I think your attitude is positive and one day at time is the right way to go so no pressure on either of you and you enjoy each others company

I think if and when he ie ready he will let you know they are remarkable animals and ours always seem to beat the vets prognosis as I'm sure under your care misty will to
Title: Re: It's Bad News
Post by: Philip on February 04, 2009, 21:47:46 PM
Stuart.

Please don't beat yourself up about Hamish. The signs are very difficult sometimes to see and a cat with only 25 % kidney function will still look and act normally. I found out Tiffy had CRF by a chance blood test.

I respect your decisions and feelings with Misty and as someone who has been through this understand how you feel.

Tiffy didnt mind the needles so it did make things easier. He was 17 when I first started giving subcutaneous fluids. You have to do what you feel is right as you know Misty better than anyone.

I hope he continues to eat. I know what an emotional rollercoaster this is for you.

Anything you want to ask me about CRF please let me know.

Take care.

Thanks Liz  :shy:

and Thanks Philip, I was also annoyed with my old vet's, so much so I left them  >:( the first thing I noticed was Hamish weeing in strange
places, I didn't really notice Him drinking more because for over 10 years I had left the cold tap trickling in the bath, and thats where they
both drank from, that has changed now so i can keep an eye on Mistys water intake
Hamish had inhouse blood tests done by the vets about a year previous to the weeing problems, I remember the vet saying something about
slightly raised creatine, nothing to worry about just now, but we'll keep an eye on it.
anyway when I went in with Hamish's wee problem I was pretty hacked off to discover they had lost his previous results >:( it was only 10
days after that I lost Him  :'(

Thanks again Philip  :shy:

Stuart

I am so sorry for your troubles.    They are only lent to us for a short while...  :Luv: :'(

Try to enjoy whatever is left and do try not to worry or reflect on past mistakes however painful.   Throw caution to the wind and think about quality as much as qauntity. If Misty is enjoying junk food, well why the heavens not! Whatever she fancies as far as I'm concerned - my granny had bowel cancer and went to her grave puffing on a ciggie saying "It's too late now - knickers to the doctors!" :evillaugh:

I had exactly 6 hours warning that my bridge babe Tigger had chronic CRF after he broke his leg as he slipped down two steps coming downstairs. He had completely shattered his femur. The failing kidneys had weakened his bones, there was no hope and he had to be PTS later that day. I truly don't know whether it's worse to have the time to say goodbye or to have it sudden they way I did, but one thing is for sure you cannot stop it so cherish and enjoy what's left.  :briggin:

Thanks again fellow Purrs ppl  :) and yes Bonnielass, your right, I have been feeling more stress free since Misty started eating again  ;D

Just thought I'd give you all a wee update, Misty is still doing fine although He doesn't seem to be putting anymore weight on and
I can still feel his spine, But He is being Misty, Cleaning Himself quite regular too and not even throwing up any furball's, infact He has
not been sick in ages  :wow:

only thing I have not been happy about is the photo quality with my Camera, it's not so much the quality, it's maybe more lack of
knowledge and why the flash keep's going off and making it look as though He's a cat lantern  >:(
there was a new member Nigel who joined recently on purr's and he had a link to photo's of His two furbabes, I was so impressed
by them  :wow: that I got in touch, and he was more than helpfull (THANK'S AGAIN)

it did mean buying a new SLR Camera, but it has fairly improved my photografic skill's  :evillaugh:
what do you People think ??

http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd228/culnara/MrMisty-1.jpg

no more glowing eye's  :wow: although the colour's a wee bit yellow from bedroom light  :shify:
hopefull get some more taken in daylight which should improve lighting colour  ;)

The past couple of days were not so good  :( on thursday and friday he didn't eat a lot, and was sick during the early
hours on saturday, but he has bounced back a bit now and is eating better.
I had been clearing out some cupboards and had an empty box which Misty soon commandeered  :Luv:

so the box is in the spare bedroom and I made the journey into the attic to get his old bed, will just have to wait and
see how long it is before he stops using them again  :innocent:  :tired:

eventually got the mattress up ready for turning, and misty decided he hadn't done his mountaineering trick for a while  :tired:
here's some piccys  :)

Going down to Tesco's today to see if there is something else I can tempt him with

well went back to Tesco's and bought umpteen different variaties, quite a few were the good old "put on a plate, then put straight in the bin...sigh"
But we seem to have made a breakthrough, and He seem's to be eating reasonable amount's of Sheba Tender Terrine brands , at least two tins a day :)

must be feeling a little weak in His hind quarters  :scared: will keep an eye on that

Misty has really got worse these past four Day's :( I keep waiting for Him to return
to the way he was.. photos posted 13th march

He is still eating n drinking really well and looks happy in himself
but the main thing Ive noticed has been He's not jumping as well now and is really hesitant when attempting to do so
I don't know if this is arthritis related or something Else :scared: (He seem's weak)
He was clambering up to get onto bed's and settee (I lift Him up when I'm there)
But it has just been since yesterday I have observed Him doing the same when coming down (won't Jump :scared:)
will phone the vet tomorrow and see what she think's

Fingers crossed the vet doesn't think it is anything too serious - it could be a potassium issue, that is common with CRF and can cause weak back legs, I think it is easily remedied though.

Lets hope its just the change in the weather all this sun is a complete change to the freezing temps from last week.

Now you need to build lots of steps and ramps so he can get access to all his fave places - you need a project don't you.

We have the extra steps around the place for Maverick our 3 legged hooligan and have found that Sweetie now pulls her self up on the throws on 2 of the couches - now they are well anchored and taped under the cushions so she still thinks she is doing it all by herself

Hope the vet can help out with what ever the issue all paws crossed here at the Clan Homestead for you and Misty

On the way home from doing my Medical Yesterday, I went in by My vet's, and explained what's happening
They want to see Misty, so I'll be taking him through today (don't really want to take Him cause He gets in a right state
in the car sometimes ) But it has to be done  :(

He still looks really happy and contented (doesn't seem to be phased one little bit) Still cleaning Himself and drinking plenty,
but His food intake is down a bit (only had 1 tin of Sheba yesterday) and some raw chicken breast

My main worry is His hind quarters (He seem's really weak) He is very slow when walking and very wobbly at times
will not jump down from anywhere, not even wee distances, Yesterday I observed him flop down/fall over twice   :'(
He still goes to his litter tray no problem

I look back at my post's and this all seem's to have started on the 21st march and he's deteriorated from then onwards
I kept waiting for Him to improve

there are various step's placed about the house to aid His ascent and decent (when he feel's like using them....sigh)

Right now He is was curled up in front of His fire, I've just lifted Him onto the bed, and He's now
ermmmm....playing with his plush orangutan  :shy:

appointment at the vet's for 2pm, I'll update when I get home

Post by: Stuart on April 02, 2009, 15:12:53 PM
Misty had a thorough check and everything is fine Temp,Heart etc.etc

vet watched Him walking (very unsteady in His hind quarters) she ruled out arthritis because He's not moving like an arthritic cat
and guesses that the Lymphosarcoma may be progressing into His spine  :'(

I have been told to double the dose of steroids for the next week (He hates them) and see how He goes from there
if there is an improvement, to gradually lower the dose again

He was Sick in His carrier on the way home  :( but as soon as i let him out He made a B-line for food and ate about half :Luv:

I forgot to mention the Potassium
will see how He gets on over the next few days  :(

Stuart might be worth getting the vet to give a long lasting steroid injection rather than trying to tablet him

We used to get them for Gracie with her tumour and for Gem to - injections just seem less hassle thatn tablets

Lets hope he improves and we have all paws crossed here

I did mention the injection Liz, but vet said we'll see how he gets on with double dose as they helped Him first time round
this is a different vet than I usually get ( She's only in her 20's I'd say )
Much prefer the older one for some reason

Our Schui did very well on long acting steroid injections he had them for the first 2 years we had him and didn't have many they lasted a good 6 months in his system initially and made his life much better.   I suppose your vet has her reasons why she is trying this route though Stuart,

I have been up with Misty since 4:30 as he woke me up trying to get onto the lowest step for getting back onto the bed
Misty has virtually lost the use of His Back legs now  :'(
He has been to the toilet about 8 times today and I had to wash Him because He can no longer crouch
He still Looks really Healthy and is a Good weight, still eating and drinking lots

I really hoped the steroids would have kicked in by now, but It feels like it's getting close to the end of the road
It tears me up inside just watching Him try to stand, I feel like phoning the vet to come round and end it  :'(

I Dont know what to do
This is Breaking My Heart  :'( :'(

The vet has just left
Misty has been given the steroid injection, vet said if it is going to improve Him, it will be in the next 24/48 hrs
if not The decision will have to be made, I cant watch him suffering  :'(
It's so damned annoying/hard and I know it's probably the steroid Pill's, But He's eating and Drinking Really well
and Misty is Looking Just like He alway's did (He's still Misty) it's Just that His back end has gone
If He was Looking Ill and Not eating or Drinking, it would be a whole lot simpler  :(

Hoping for a Miracle

We sat out on the Balcony for twenty minutes getting some sun, where He started cleaning Himself
Although very wobbley, He walk's not to bad on the carpet, but in the Kitchen where His litter tray is
It's laminate flooring and he cannot get a grip on the floor, ends up sliding  :(

here is a photo taken at 11 o'clock

Sorry Desley, Misty's bloods were done in January this year, that's when He was diagnosed with the Lymphosarcoma  :'(
Misty has eaten about 3 tin's of Sheba today plus loads of Pit'r Pat candy for cats (He loves them)

JaneyK, did Schui wee a lot after the steroid injection ?? Misty was going every 10 minutes after his, I lost count of
how many times He went today, and I know He wasn't drinking enough to replace what He's got rid of  :(
for just now Misty is fast asleep, snoring on top of the bed (I've just discovered He'd wee'd on it during the night  :( )

Steroids can make them wee more, which is why they should be used with caution on CRF cats, as they can find it hard enough to keep themselves hydrated anyway - I refused them with Rosie, as she weed so much without them. I do hope they can help his legs, but it would be interesting to have his bloods repeated in case it is a potassium issue, as I am sure they can have an injection for that.

Lots of love, positive vibes and purrs for Misty

the tray near him is a good idea. Steroids often make them wee more, but not every few minutes (our record here is every hour or 1 1/2 hrs). Have you got any Cystease you could try as it sounds like a bit of cystitis on top? It seems to work by easing the irritation in the bladder. My vet gave me a potassium supplement for Swampy, which seems to perk cats up a bit - Kaminox.  Not cheap but it has amino acids and iron as well and is easy to give (1ml dropper).

Post by: Stuart on April 05, 2009, 13:28:02 PM
I'm afraid Misty has worsened overnight, and has now lost all mobility  :'(
and I'm not sure but I think He may have lost His Bladder and Bowel control, OH has got some pad's from the Hospital
This is so Hard Because apart from this He IS Still Misty, It was straight forward when Hamish had to go, He Looked ill
and Unhappy, whereas Misty is still eating and Drinking, Purring and Bright.
But I now feel we have came to the end of Our Journey together  :'(

when I Initially spoke to the vet over the phone, He was pretty downbeat and said there was nothing else We could do
( this vet is the owner of the practice, a Mr Brain) I Did mention to Him about the Potassium, But again, He thinks it is the
Cancer taking a hold as Lymphosarcoma is quite aggressive. It was only when I said that Shirley ( My Vet ) had Mentioned
the steroid injection as a last resort that I could hear Him looking through Notes, came back on the phone and said:
" Yes, we could try that "
He seemed a bit annoyed when I said I was wanting a call out, as I did not want to stress Misty by travelling in the car
He said "If only you'd phoned earlier, I'm not long back from Fraserburgh "  >:(

It doesn't look as though it's worked  :'(

I have never had to give Misty a Proper wash in all the years Ive had Him, but the state He is in atm leaves me with no
alternative, Just glad that OH is not working today, I'm away down to Tescos for some baby shampoo

Strangely, although I have My Moments  :'( I seem to be accepting the situation for now ( Until I have to call the Vet  :'( )
Misty has had CRF for over a year and a half and the cancer since January, I feel Blessed that I have had this Extra time to spoil
Him even more since the CRF and that I have been Home these past 4 Months to look after Him

Looking Back as with Hamish, He's had a Brilliant Life, Just sad it has to end this way
I wished He could have Made it to His 18th, but that is looking very unlikely at the Moment  :'(

Aww Staurt, my heart goes out to you and i know how you feeling. In last two years i lost DD and Jim to cancer and now Boy having treatments for Lymphoma. When he was diagnosed with Lymphoma i was told in his condition the steroids will only work with chemotherapy, but its different in every case . :(
You are doing your best for Misty and i am sure he knows how much he is loved. Thinking of you and Misty.

I'm so sorry things are worsening for Misty, Stuart. It's difficult to assess quality of life sometimes, but you know Misty well and will always do what's best for him, regardless of your feelings.

I hope the injection does help even if it isn't looking likely.

I slept with Misty in The Living room again Last night
He had deteriorated quite a lot during the early hours, and had stopped eating

A really strange thing happened around 3am this morning, (I swear this is True)
I was watching Misty Sleeping in front of the fire, and out of the corner of my eye, I could have sworn
I saw a Black Cat creep through the gap of the Living room door, but when I looked Over, there was
nothing there?? All that came into my head was that Hamish had been sent down to Collect Misty.

I’m Sorry I can’t type anymore

Misty went to the Bridge at 2:25pm today

Post by: Stuart on April 10, 2009, 00:44:14 AM
First off, THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH for all the PM's I received, and for your condolence and sympathy during this sad time..
Word's cannot express my Gratitude for the Support You wonderful Folk's have given Me  :shy:

Misty was given the Steroid injection on the Saturday morning, and looking back now I actually think it made things worse
within 20 minutes of the injection, Misty kept going to His litter tray, He was still drinking, but it was plain to see He was
not taking in enough liquid to replace what He was losing  :( I kept hoping the steroid injection would kick in
I don't know why the vet never mentioned anything about the Steroids Making Him wee more?? He must have known
Misty also had the CRF, as I had told Him this over the phone while He was looking at Misty's records ??

On Sunday morning, His back legs looked worse and it was very difficult for Him to stand, I found myself jumping out of the
chair every ten minutes, Helping Him to his Feet and Trying to guess where he wanted to go??
In all the year's I had Misty I'd never really had to wash Him, But Misty had weed Himself during the night, and we had no
option but to wash Him " He absolutely hated it " OH thought He may have lost control of His bladder, But Later I noticed
that He was pushing when weeing, It was like He had given up trying to stand because he was just unable to do so  :(
up until the early hours Misty was still eating very well, and during the whole of sunday He'd eaten over three and a half tin's
of Sheba and some raw chicken

Like I said in an earlier post, around three am (Monday) I saw out of the corner of my eye, a shadow of a black cat creep in
through the living room door, I now honestly Believe this was Hamish coming down to be with Misty to show Him the way to
Rainbow Bridge, it was not long after that, that I noticed Misty was not as Bright as before, and was just picking at his food,
He'd take a bit, then spit it out, even the Liver treats I got sent over from the US did not seem to entice Him anymore :'(

At 9 in the Morning, I felt it was time, But I found Myself Holding back, still waiting for a miracle to happen, but it was not to be
At 2:25 Misty, cradled in my arms, was sent to the Bridge  :'( :'( :'( it was very Peaceful and quick

I had planned to go away previously for a couple of days, Leaving on the Tuesday, but I knew I would have been worried sick if
Misty had not got any better by then, I would keep thinking of Him, and probably would have canceled it, but due to Misty being
sent to the Bridge, I decided I would still go, but stay in Aberdeen on Monday Night and leave from there next day instead
(It also Helped a bit by not being at Home) We Went to the Pet crematorium on the way through, and said our last Farwell to
Misty  :'(

I made my way back home on Wednesday afternoon, and was about twenty minutes from Home, when this Perfectly formed
Rainbow appeared and lasted for well over 10 minutes, I couldn't hold Back the Tears :'( " Misty had sent Me a sign He'd Arrived "
walking back into the house with no furbabe to greet me did not go down well either
I went through to the crematorium today and Misty's remains are now Home next to Hamish's

Although My Heart is Breaking, I feel I am Handling Misty's passing a lot better than I did with Hamish's
I think this is mainly due to the Fact that "with Misty" I have had Plenty of warning of the inevitable, and just feel so Lucky that
He stayed another year and a half after diagnosis with the CRF. It's just so rotten that the cancer took Him in the end  :'(
I also feel if it was not for the cancer Misty would still be here today.

As painful as this is just now, I keep telling myself that, Misty has had a Very Long and wonderful happy life, which was basically illness
free for the most of it, For that I am also Glad and Thankfull

It's just that the House is so damned empty and quiet now, and I feel a Big part of me is missing, I keep waiting for Misty to come in
and jump up onto my knee, but it's not going to happen  :'( there's no sound of cat litter being scattered about the kitchen floor,
no sound of claws being sharpened, no one to jump into your seat when you get up to make a cuppa, no one hogging the whole of the bed
No Misty  :'( :'( :'(

OH tried to tell me about a beautiful cat (Bengal) which is a rescue, But I stopped her, I feel for now it's just far too early  :'(
although I will admit the thought of two Furbabes (any age or colour) Indoor cat's would appeal to me  :)
but like I say, it's just far too early  :(

Just taking things one day at a time for just now :shy:

Can't really think of anymore to say ATM, was going to add some story's of the thing's Misty used to get up to,
but Ill leave that for another day

I will apologise for babbling a bit ( just a habit of mine ) my brain is kinda mush just now, and it feel's better getting it out

I'm so Glad I found this forum and honored to be part of it
So Much wonderful people on here  :grouphug:

THANK YOU ALL AGAIN !!

Stuart..............

Stuart, what happened during those last few days with Misty were exactly what happened with Schui so I could relate to all you went through,

 Thinking of you Stuart xx

Stuart, you'll never not miss him. But the good memories WILL eventually make it hurt less.  I still miss Tobes a lot too, but sometimes I catch myself smiling because a tap's dripping and it reminds me of how he used to bolt to any tap he heard do that. :Luv:

Thanx Jackspratt, and I know what you mean about the smallest of thing's that bring back Memories
was just thinking yesterday, that My toes will now be safe if I accidentally stick them out from under the duvet when asleep :evillaugh:
then thought about it and I so wished that Misty was still here to claw and bite them  :'(

When times are hard Stuart I cuddle Sofa and Vesti's box now so I know they are still getting hugs from me and are with me and it does help.     Misty is home with you now forever.    To me Sofa and Vesti will always be with me now forever and that comforts me, I know they are not alone and I still talk to them all the time - anyone would think I was mad if they walked in the room sometimes but I don't care.

You gave Misty a wonderful life, Stuart, and you spared him suffering at the end.  My thoughts are with you
