Athena’s kittens were a bit hesitant at first which is how I managed to get some shots that actually have kittens on them instead of my usual bums or blurs. They soon got the hang of things and speeded up though.

Francis started life as Francis Flute but we seems to be calling him Friar Francis now so take your pick.

Olivia’s kittens are just too quick for me so the best pictures of them are taken when they’re behind bars.

Cassandra has a very expressive face that lets you know when she thinks she’s being badly done too as in the final pic where she is watching Athena’s babies playing.

Next Portia and her kitten Nerissa. Their play sessions have been a bit curtailed of late with all the new kitten activity so they’re making up for lost time.

Better late than never – some pictures of the Paws inn babies taken on Wednesday. I hope they enjoyed the day as much as I did.

Pictures are fine but it’s the thundering noise of them charging around exploring and playing that really brings a smile to my face. The mums, bless them, are still kittens themselves and joined in the fun.

So to start, some of Rosalind’s babies. They’re off to the vets this afternoon for first vacs so they won’t perhaps be as interested in the cat carriers after that. It’s a good job they’re going to their new home on Monday or Paws Inn would have to put out an urgent appeal for funds for kitchen roll.

Sorry should have updated,the boys are still under the weather but eating again,they both had convenia shots and are having metacam so hopefully will soon be back to their normal selves.
All else at the Inn are fine,we are reaching mass vaccination time and lots of spays ouch.
Think Carol took lots of pics yesterday while I was busy warming the settee.

Cupcake is fine.
Poor Wilbur and Harry seem to have picked something up and were rushed to vet yesterday temp of 40.3 and 40.7,they are in a huge pen with outdoor run away from all the other cats its likely they have eaten insect or similar,Rob did find a mangled up slug in their Pen,fingers crossed they will fight it off soon they are big boys now.
Pansydora and Rosalind are both calling wish I had earplugs.
The fusspots are going for first vaccs on Friday and off to new home on monday, I honestly cant wait though I will miss them terribly.
All other inmates fine with kittens everywhere you look.

Oh Teresa, you did all you could, sometimes we have to admit defeat and look to what we have left.

In this case lovely Cupcake now has every chance of finding a wonderful new home and will never need to suffer this loss and grief ever again.

Cupcake can feed Juno now without further problem Sootyca.

The trouble arises because the intestine of the newborn kitten in the first 16-24 hours of life is still permeable and allows the high concentration of antibodies in mum's colostrum (first milk) to pass though it and into the bloodstream. Generally this is a good thing - its how kittens get their immunity, but in this case Cupcake has produced antibodies that have attacked her kittens' blood. Only time will tell whether Juno has been affected or not.

We think we know now what the problem is with Cupcake’s litter but sadly there is nothing we can do for her remaining kitten Juno other than hope and pray.

If we’re right (and I really think we are) it’s a condition known as 'neonatal isoerythrolysis' or 'haemolysis of the newborn’ which is due to an incompatibility between the mother’s blood group and that of her kittens. The kittens are born healthy, but during their first day of life they absorb antibodies from the mother's colostrum (first milk) which destroy their red blood cells causing anaemia and jaundice. Sadly there is nothing that can be done to reverse the process once the kitten has absorbed the antibodies so bottle feeding is of no help unless its started as soon as the kittens are born, at which time you have no idea that anything is wrong because they’re healthy.

Juno does have a ray of hope – well two really. She may have the same blood group as her mum or she may be one of those lucky kittens who are only mildly affected or, better still, remain unaffected.

She is the smallest of the litter so maybe in the general scramble for that first feed she didn’t get as much as the others. It’s only in the first 16-24 hours that the kitten’s gut is permeable enough to allow the antibodies to pass though it and into the bloodstream.

Warning. You may find this final paragraph distressing. We’ve arrived at this conclusion as a result of something we witnessed in connection with the death of the kitten number 2 and things we were able to rule out after the vet performed a PM on him, plus the fact that on examination of the insides of the mouths of the remaining live kittens yesterday two showed signs of jaundice. Juno's did not. She is all black (like her unfortunate siblings) so we wont know whether she is developing jaundice without examining the inside of her mouth which is not something we’re prepared to do given that it will not help one jot.
