Title: Can't find anyone to cat sit
Post by: Leanne on February 12, 2007, 13:32:26 PM
Don't really want to put Jess into a cattery so have been looking for someone to come in and feed and change the litter tray when we are away for a long weekend next month but no one seems to cover our area, if the worst comes to the worst family said they would do it!!

Anyone got any recommendations for Essex??

Thanks

Would your family do it for you anyway, seems silly spending money on sitters when you have family that would help. And Jess would feel more at ease with someone he's seen before coming into the house. Just a thought. :)

The thing is I'd want someone to go in twice a day and my family don't really have time to do this plus they don't really have any real experience of cats,

What about a neighbour or friend?

You could try asking at your vets to see if they have any recommendations.... Also have a look on the notice board at your local Jollyes or similar, the one I go to has lots of adverts for petsitters, all Police checked, insured etc

Tried the vets they had no idea seemed very disinterested and couldn't recommend anyone, Neighbours are one I'm not sure about we've only lived where we are 8 weeks and don't know them that well and friends don't live that close.

Might have to go down the family route but I don't think they will realise what it entails which is what worries me, either that or Jess comes to Devon to meet his other Nanny LOL

How about using the brill cat sitter i use? Her name is Saffron and she sits all over the UK. She Lives in so is there all the time and she adores cats. My lads are sooo relaxed when i come home, it's great as i know they are well looked after. She charges £18 for a day/night.

Claire used Saff for her weekend away and said this:-

Just wanted to say a big thank you for putting me in touch with the lovely Saffron.
She cat-sat (and house-sat) for us last weekend and it was a great success. Pudding not only survived but actually seemed remarkably unphased by the whole experience. And the house seemed to look much better on our return than when we left...
xxx Claire

Let me know if you would like Saff's details.

xxx

I would go with Tan's advice ... lest you get your house sat as well.

But petpals seem to do Essex:

I've emailed Petpals but they don't seem to cover my area of Essex, I'll see what they say though.

I don't know if I actually want someone to live in our house, I'm not sure that I like that idea,

Are we being too fussy???

:thanks: for all your help and suggestions though

You could try asking at your local Cats Protection, I don't think it's something they specifically offer but if you don't ask you don't get! I'm sure they'd be glad of the donation, obviously they won't be Police checked or insured but neither would a neighbour be and you can be sure they love cats!

Some may be as it could be required for the real job. However a branch Co-ordinator should know who is very honest and if they were not perhaps they would not be allowed to help CP. However in view of the law (Animal lovers face £500 fines – just for looking after pets for their neighbours or friends. They fall foul of a little known law, which insists anyone paid to look after animals needs a £300 kennel licence. They could even face jail under it if there is an allegation of cruelty or neglect). perhaps CP volunteers would not wish to become involved in the care of owned cats.

It just depends if there is a jobsworth and they find out.

Jess, where exactly are you in Essex ?   I am in Rayleigh and have seen some cat sitters advertised in our local pet shop so could get the numbers for you if not too far away.

That would be great if you can, we're in Wickford. Never thought about asking in the local pet shop so shall be doing that this weekend too.  :thanks:

Jess's Mum, sorry to hijack your thread but didn't want to start another one with the same title.  I need to find a live in cat sitter who can look after 2 elderly and sometimes unwell cats, otherwise I can not go away at all with my OH until they are no longer with us. As I want them to live for years still and I do sometimes want a holiday with my other 2 legged furry loved one I need to find someone special.

I have used an agency before and would do so again despite the expense if they had the right person. The lovely woman who used to come years ago has retired; she drove (must have driving licence), was hugely sensible and gentle and they adored her.  However the agency person we tried for a few days while the cats were still well in 2005 was ok if they are fine, but not someone we'd trust with sick beloveds. Has to be someone who is in quite a lot and sleeps here and has the patience to deal with my neuroticism about my little ones and the cats' specific feeding/medication requirements which can be fussy, esp on 'off' days.

I've also used a pop in and feed cat service and while the woman was very sweet, she gave the wrong pill on one occasion and on another, tried refeeding immediately after my cat had vomited. They made it clear that they don't like 'doing' ill animals.

As they would be living in, they would have to have references.  Can anyone help me please?  Normally I would go to France for a month in the early summer taking the cats with me (they can stay pretty much anywhere there in rented flats) but am very unsure as to whether they will be fit enough for the long trip this year.

I would like to get a sitter now so that I could see how she got on with a short trip away before doing anything longer.  Many thanks for any help!
