Title: Hi everyone
Post by: Samui on March 05, 2008, 13:19:02 PM
I joined this site today in the hopes of getting some help for one of my cats, Samui.  I am sorry that I started without introducing myself.  I am a 30 year old white South African female living in a small town called Napier, Western Cape South Africa.  I have two cat children, Samui an eight year old and Sullivan a 1 year old.  I adopted Samui 8 years ago from TEARS (The Emma Animal Rescue Society) in South Africa.  He was born with only the one eye.  A week ago he developed a corneal ulcer in his healthy eye, I took him to the Vet in Bredasdorp, the closest vet to where I live.  They were unable to treat him and referred me to an eye specialist in Cape Town, Dr Gary Bauer.  The only way Samui's eye can be saved is to have an eye graft and this is a very expensive procedure.  It would not have been so bad if Samui had two eyes but he only has the one.

My other cat I picked up in my moms garden in Worcester when I visited her for a weekend.  He is a lovely little fellow and I love both of them to bits.  I really am just looking for help because I can't do this on my own.

You are more than welcome to contact the Cape Animal Medical Centre to check if he is a patient there.

I am sorry that I didn't introduce myself before begging for money.

Hi Lana and welcome to Purrs.

As stated in your other thread, I'm the member of staff Gill mentioned.

I'm very sorry Samui (lovely name) is going through a tough time and I can appreciate the strain you must be feeling. I have some contacts with the Animal Anti Cruelty League in SA, they have a branch in Bredasdorp. Have you by chance taken Samui there? The AACL are a great help to many animals and I am sure they can help you find a way to do this locally?

Hi there

I was put in contact with Christel Janse van Rensburg, head nurse with The Society for Animals in Distress.  The procedure apparently is not something "normal" vets can do but only a specialist.  The only one doing this in the Western Cape is Dr Gary Bauer at the Eye clinic in Kenilworth.  Samui has been there since last Wednesday.  I had to make a decision and the operation was done, now I have 4 months to raise the money, usually you have to pay on collection of your pet but they agreed to give me 4 months.

Hi Tan, they phoned me just after 12:00 today, he is up and doing okay, but he needs to stay there for another 5 days to see if the graft "takes" on the eye.  I am sure that it is going to take.

Hi Gill

I don't have him back yet, he needs to stay there for 5 more days to see if the graft takes.  The pic on my profile is Samui, you'll see he only has the one eye.  But I am going to keep praying that the eye is going to get better 100%.  And thanks for the welcome, nice to talk about this with people who probably know exactly how I feel.

Hi all!

We have verified that Samui's story is indeed genuine, through some wonderful friends in South Africa. We are currently gathering information to see what we can do to help Lana through this.

Lana's original post in the Fundraising section is open, we'll post there in the next day or so once we know more.

Hi Gill

I am waiting for a reply from the vet to see if he can send me some pics of the eye before Samui had the operation.  Thanks for posting the pics!
