Title: Prefered colours
Post by: Pinkbear (Julie) on July 04, 2007, 22:37:48 PM
Recently, I heard several instances of people wanting Ginger kittens. One woman, who prefers feral rescues, said she's waited for years for a kitten. I also here stories of rescues being chocka with Black cats because everyone seems to pass them by. And everyone I ever discuss this with seems to be after the perfect Silver Tabby.

I've just taken whatever walks in the door...  :evillaugh: But I confess to really likeing Tabbies if there was a choice.

I just wondered if colour really was the most important factor in people's choices? Or why those colours are prefered?

Colour isn't what I go for, but there are certain colours I do love, some I have had and would love to own again, others I will hopefully get to own at some point - I would have another ginger, there is also blues, greys, silver tabbies, pure blacks, pure whites. I adore pure black cats, me and Molly were having wonderful snuggles on the bed earlier, and made me realise that most of the black cats I have owned have been very affectionate, and liked to help you feel better. I have met a few nasty tabbies, but still love them, yet would never choose to own a tortie cos of the nasty ones I have met!! I dont think I would choose to own another black and white, even though some of them are stunning.
But, no doubt I will keep taking the ones that just turn up, and not really pick a cat for any reason other than its age.

I think just as we all have preferences in human looks we are the same with animals.  I dont dislike any cat but if i had to say which my least favorite would be then i'd say tortie (although i've seen some beautiful ones).  I have for as long as i can remember wanted a red or red and white cat, i dont know why i just have (i also wanted to marry a black irish man but never found one ROFL)

Black cats were always my favorite, Ive had 2 and fraser is black and white which i probably wouldnt have gone out hunting for but nor did i reject him because he was black and white.  Since finally getting my red boy i have to confess i have realised i've even more potty about the reds than i thought i was.

As for wild cats well thats easy...theres nothing more gorgeous on this earth than a panther  :Luv:

I always wanted a ginger kitten, but when I went to the rescue I ended up with Twinkle, a half bald, bandy legged, four toothed black and white!!!  Plus he was 10 years old at the time!!  I've now got Missy (dilute tortie) and Meg (all black).  My fosters come in all colours, but recently more often than not have been black!  But am picking up two ginger girls tomorrow.  Esther's kittens are beautiful and include a semi long haired tabby, a tortie, a grey and a silver tabby.

I dont care what colour they are but I do love blue cats cos of Kocka but doubt that I will ever have another.

My tortie Sasa is very special as she is most beautiful but my Misaman is just adorable and I do love black and whites. Lil punk Ducha is a blue point and has a very cute face and handsome seal point Franta is a cuddlebum and like a teddy bear.........just loves em all  ;D

I am very partial to longer haired cats although the birmans leave fur everywhere all the time  :shify: :shify: :shify:

For some reason, I don't feel particularly drawn to Torties...all the ones I've seen have looked like they'd have someones throat out given half a chance  :scared:  :scared:

Any other colour is fine, I'd be drawn to the personality of the kitty rather than its colour. Mind you, I would like a white cat one day. Love tabbies but I think that's largely due to the lovely Mavis, bless her, being such a sweetheart.

I  :catluv: SLIM SHADY

I don't have a preference although not to keen on torties. I love all cats but have a bit of an aversion to persians and other long haired ones

I would love a grey cat but like most here would be drawn to something else.

oh yes my hair length preference is short hair aswell, i dont mind admiring the longer haired variety so long as someone else has the job of grooming  :evillaugh:  Unless its perhaps a laperm longhair which doesnt need much grooming  ;)  then i could be temped to change my mind.

Grey/blue cats are lovely but...... just please dont call them smokey or misty  (sorry to anyone that has )

Tortie is the one colour I've never had. But I came within a hair's bredth once... an 11pm panic call from a pal manning the front desk at the local fuzz factory. Someone handed it in, taped in a fruit box, saying it was lost. I got there 20 mins later with my basket. I took a look in and this scowling, twisted Tortie face peered back and spat at me. I was so grateful when the owner turned up a few mins later....

You realise of course, that I've probably destined myself to having a Tortie  . Every single one I've seen at the CP shelter has given me a 'look'...I stop to see who's in the pen and get a look of "Keep moving..."

My lovely grey lady is called Imogen so not guilty on the lack of imaginative names, actually, I didn't choose her name, my OH did  :innocent:.

Gingers get my top vote, followed by greys and tabbies equal second - really couldn't choose between the two.  I'm not overly fond of long hairs but wouldn't rule one out if I was 'chosen' by a long hair.

How lucky am I - I have had:

Tiggy - a stunningly gorgeous ginger tabby

Benji - Tiggy's bro, a black and silver tabby with stunning markings

Lukey -  grey tabby

Riley -  grey and white tabby

Not forgetting cousin Smudge, a black and white bruiser of an ex tom cat who made our home his.

I don't really go looking for that colour when I get a new cat (especially as they're either from the rescure or someone's friend's friend is struggling to home them).

I have a soft spot for black and white (tuxedo style) cats, since the majority of the cats we've owned while I've been around were B&W, I don't get why people refuse to have them they're gorgeous. Quite like all blacks although never had one, but when I was little my childminder's mum had one called Dusty and I used to adore her she was the highlight of my week..

I'm not too keen on tabby's, except my own, lol.. But I think every cat I meet wins me over just by being a cutie.. lol.

In the past, I have had cats of all colours, long hair, short hair, etc. Rosie is the first Tortie I have ever had and I'm amused by what some of you say about Tortie's and 'the looks' they give you. My Sister says exactly the same and says Rosie has an evil look.

I have never noticed this - love is blind  ;D but I guess there must be some truth in it!

My favourite cat when I was younger was my tabby cat called Frisky, he was gorgeous, and a really big cat, and so loving. We also had a ginger Persian called Charisma, he was the laziest cat, I have ever come accross, well, he was either lazy or a true Master, as we had to carry him to his food bowl or he would stay in the same place for months!!!

I love black and black and white short hair cats, keeps me from having to go around defuring my clothes as most of what I wear is black :)

Don't really mind, Lirael's the blonde of the family and Smoke's white fur gets everywhere.

Friend of ours has a ragdoll and two norwegian forest cats and a moggie, all long haired! So we can normally tell what we have worn over their house as our clothes keep the fur for about 6 months no matter how much washing or sticky roll we use.

Think it's more who you fall in love with than colour.

I would love a longhair at some point, but to make sure I can keep up with the grooming, and that it doesn't bother my asthma too much, I want to foster one first - and everytime we have had one in, I have been stopped from getting it!! We have one in at the moment, but can't take her on!! I am not keen on Persians either, although Candice has a gorgeous one. I find it funny how many people aren't keen on torties though.

I'm partial to gingers but I wans't looking for that colour when I got Jaffa.  I actually wanted 2 black and white cats but wan't overly fussy.  Jaffa caught my eye although it was his personality as much as his colour so I ended up taking him home with me (along with Magpie who was black and white).  Same with Mosi - wasn't particularly looking for a red Somali but the only male left in the litter was red so that's what I got.  Generally I prefer short haired cats but Magpie had long hair and Mosi is, of course, semi long haired.  so yes I have preferences, but it doesn't take much to sway me to another colour etc.  I also prefer males to females, although I've never actually had a female cat.  If I was looking for a cat and a suitable female was available I wouldn't turn her down for that reason.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of red cats (although Boopy is off to visit one but he's red silver and utterly gorgeous so that's ok lol)  although tortie smokes are very yummy. My absolute fave colour is solid black followed by black tabby then black smokes.

I must admit I'm not hugely keen on short haired cats as they just don't look quite right to me lol (2 of mine are short haired but they just look odd compared to Tigger and the NFCs).
Title: Re: Prefered colours
Post by: ccmacey on July 05, 2007, 11:06:26 AM
I think its been their little faces that has drawn me to them  :) The first litter where I got my first cats were all black n white, so obviously I got 2 black n whites.

My third cat came to me and he was all black, I didn't choose him he was the last one. I'm glad he came to me because he was in need of propper care and I don't think he would be here today if he didn't.

Macey came as a tester to see how the boys would get on with another kitten, she was not meant for me at all lol. She is black n white and had the cutest little face.

I did get to choose my final kitten and had the choice of grey and white long hair, grey tabby or mackrel tabby and after some mind changing over the tabbies I went for the grey. I did at first think he wouldn't fit in because of his colour.

So I would have to say I have a soft spot for black n whites I love the Felix lookalikes.  :Luv:

Dark torties scare me a bit too.  :shify:

Just caught up with this thread and feel the need to defend the tortie corner  ;)
When I was younger we only ever had black and white cats, and when I moved out of my parents house and into my flat, I wanted cats of my own immediatly.

I was chosen by ^Tom^ and Tilly, Tom black and white, so loving, timid to begin with but loved a cuddle. He's my beautiful bridge boy  :Luv: His sister Tilly is a tortie, tortie and white actually (calico i think it's also called?)
I have never had any experience of torties before Tilly, and as soon as I saw her, I fell in love. She was just so unusual to me  :Luv: Her colours are gorgeous, she has jet black, pure white and a beautiful fawn colour  :) She has such a gorgeous nature as well, so loving, comes up to you to give you 'kisses'  (headbutts really,) but I honestly could never imagine her having a bad streak.

So overall, because of my Tilly, my experience of torties is great. I think they are beautiful and different. The ones I have seen in rescues seem so friendly as well  :Luv:
I now also have Charlie, he's grey and white, with little bits of tabby through the grey  :) I just thought he was gorgeous and different as well, and now finally, I have little Missy. She's my black and white baby girl, she chose me and I love her to bits  :)

I don't think I really mind about colours to be honest, I never really wanted a ginger cat, but I've seen so many beautiful ones through Purrs that my opinion changed  ;D

Here's a picture of the beautiful Tilly, I don't know how anyone could think she wasn't gorgeous  :Luv:

torties/calicos where there is a relatively large amount of white are very nice to look at i think, My mothers cat sophie has a large amount of white and very patchwork indeed (so she'd be described as calico i guess ) she's a very attractive cat indeed...unfortunately she's the nastiest most vicious piece of work i've come across..and no she wasnt feral etc she's just an evil moo !!!!!!!

Sorry - I thought we were talking about COLOURS - why oh why do we always get this PERSIAN BASHING, whenever preferred this that and the other comes up?!! >:(

We are talking about colours we PREFER arent we? - NOT cats we DON'T LIKE - peeps on here have got all sorts of breeds, moggies, colours etc.  Everyone's entitled to their opinions of course, BUT, when it is well known that several peeps on here, including me, have persians - why is it deemed acceptable to make derogatory remarks about that breed? I mean - there ARE some cats that I don't particularly like the look of - BUT I would never in a million years say so and offend anyone here that has that particular breed. But just because I may not like the look of a particular breed/cat, doesnt mean that its not a wonderful cat to own, with a lovely character, temperament etc.

My persians mean the world to me, and I find these sort of comments highly offensive and hurtful - not just in this thread, there have been several over the time I've been on this forum - I havent commented before, but felt I just had to today...

I've got to say I've never been around a Persian.

Not on purpose, just never known anyone who owned one and there weren't many long haired cats in the rescue I worked for in the US.

Just not fond of long haired animals, but that said my one foster kitten is long haired. Or fluffy as I keep telling it, with a big black spot on its tummy.

Title: Re: Prefered colours
Post by: Susanne (urbantigers) on July 05, 2007, 18:43:05 PM
I think persians are one of those love them or hate them cats, just like any other extreme cat such as orientals, sphynx etc.  That's why they tend to draw either gasps of admiration or comments that people aren't that keen on them.  I don't think anyone means to offend - just stating a personal preference (just like Lottie saying that she's not keen on red cats or on shorthairs - Jaffa is most offended!  ;D).   They are one of the most popular breeds so obviously a lot of people love them!  And I have a soft spot for Gillian's Sam  :Luv:

Rosie is not scary at all,  :Luv:  maybe just some of the ones I have seen as they seem to sneek up on me.

I love Persians but couldnt own one because I dont think I could manage the fur, my cats hate being brushed so I tend to stay away from them. I do have 2 long haired rabbits though so its not the fur.

All I know is a cat is a cat and they to me are loved for being that.

I am sorry you feel offended about people saying they dont like Persians Gillian - I have actually only met one, she was a 20 year old who really did look her age, bless her - although still had her tortitude!! There are lots of other breeds I dont like the look of, just dont think there are any owners on here. We all have our own likes and dislilkes, I never realised there were so many people on here not keen on torties, but I dont mean any offence by saying I dont like them, as I dont when I say I dont like Persians (although as I pointed out before, I do like one of Candices, and I do think some of yours are nice), they are just not my cup of tea.

Well, there have certainly been some interesting responses. 'Tortitude' Desley... I'm gonna knick that one!

The reason I started this thread was that I'm forever trying to understand people's choices as some of them don't make sense to me. When we chose Tilly (or she chose us!), it never occured to me that black cats have a hard time finding new homes, but I've heard it so often since... Of course, we are going to get swept away with generalisations; it's because we are talking about a general subject.

I did have a Persian once, Henry, someone elses cast off as usual. During the course of learning to care for him, I realised that they take an extra kind of dedication and are prone to an extra horrid kind of abuse - shear neglect. It takes a special kind of person to love Persians, and when you are that person, you could have your heart broken every day listening to the stories of suffering Persians go through. It's bound to make you defensive. Gillian, I admire you. I would never willingly have a Persian again. I don't have what it takes.

I am still baffled, delighted and amused to hear people's views on this subject. No one's going to convince me Tabby isn't the best colour ever invented.... but that's what free speach is about.  ;)

Awww poor Jaffa, give him a big cuddle from me and tell him I'm sorry and give Mosi a cuddle whilst you're at it seeing as he's red as well

Cuddles dispensed!

I've become a fan of red cats through having red cats rather than the other way around.

I love my Tortie even though she doesnt love me too much and also was surprised how many people dont like torties.

I knew about the black cat thing cos had seen a notice in a petshop about it in London and also I think CP told me. I had the most wonderful ginger move in with me in London and had to get CP to rehome him after 9 months it took for him to stop being scared and to become a lapcat., cos of Kocka. It was a decision that I have always regretted but was told by CP that he was rehomed immediately cos they had a waiting list for ginger cats. I assumed that everyone loved ginger cats !

They said they took him to his new home and he walked straight out of the carrier and onto the mans lap and sat there purring but I still miss beautiful Gingerbread  :(

I absolutely adore blue cats, so finding Pearl was a dream come true!  :Luv:

But I would have taken her even if she was green with pink spots as she was picked on temperament to match the Tobster...

I've also always admired marmalade cats and when I first went looking for a cat, that's what I wanted, but I came back from the shelter with Toby, who is black. As a result, I fell in love with black cats and I can't see why folks don't want them - a well groomed and cared for black cat is a stunning sight. I also like black and white tuxedo cats with their white bibs and spats. And I like black torties, tabbies, smokes, colourpoints...

Aaargh, they're all lovely but black and blue are my colours of choice.

As for breeds rather than non-peds, that's a lot more personal and touches raw nerves more than a lot of folks would want to admit. I will say that I'm not a fan of the extremes in terms of breeds - my breeds of choice would be BSH and Maine Coon if I were to go for a ped, both of which are pretty middle of the road.

Think they are all gorgeous. Though B&W and Black cats I find myself drawn to most, though before Lexy claimed me there was this one love tortie and white girl in the rescue who was just gorgeous. Sadly she needed a constant companion, very affectionate cat and would not do well with other cats and wanted adults only.

I had a long haired tabby. She was gorgeous.  Hard work keeping her fur combed since she hated the brush or comb but still my little girl.

In all honesty I was never fond of red cats (sorry Jaffa, Cody, Paddy, Mosi, Biscuit, Cosmo et al - sorry can't remember all the names this moment). And then my sister was rudely adopted by a gorgeous red and white boy, who just refused to find a home other than her lap, so he stayed. Most pampered cat next to Lexy! Spenny is gorgeous. And then of course I joined the forum and got a gander at Cody.

Well my love for red boys just abounded.

If its right its right, any colour, any hair length. They just pwetty babies  :Luv:

Oh and here is a gander at my nephew:  ;)

He is one of the few cats who will drool if you rub his tummy. He is cuddly, and just a purrpot. He was a stray, only 11 months old when he found my sister's house and never left. So cute...just scrummy!

I'm sure that everyone who's contributed to this thread has done so in a 'tongue in cheek' sort of way and not intended any offence.

But, if there's anyone out there who doesn't like Ginger, Grey, Tabby or Black and White cats, I don't mind if they say so because I'll carry on loving mine anyway  :shy: so  :P  ;).

 ;D

By the way, should I be describing Basil as Red? I'm still calling him Ginger  :)

I have just taken in a dark tortie kitten today, it's been a long day. And she's lovely! Really cuddly and sweet, I've never properly met one before, but she's lovely, a bit crazy but lovely.... A lot of people seem to not like them (people think she's 'ugly' :( ).. But without getting into details some people are stupid and I'm a sucker for a cutie (which is any cat really lol)..

Gill, grey and blue are actually two different colours, but when it comes to red cats, i personally call them ginger, although I think the 'pedigree' term is red. Some people also call them orange, so that one is just a personal choice.

Thanks for clearing up the red/ginger thing. I shall carry on calling Basil ginger..."red whinger" just doesn't sound the same  and he's too daft to be called something as regal sounding as red.

I've decided on what my next cat will be like....He/she will be a long haired, dark Tortie, at least 10 years old and with an 'interesting' personality. And I'm willing to bet that within a fortnight I'd be on here saying puss was the loveliest puss in the world - just a bit misunderstood

Oh and I'm not being mean calling Basil my ginger whinger...he does whinge - constantly....where was that thread on annoying habits.......

So what's the difference between grey and blue then, Desley?  I thought they were the same.  You don't hear about grey pedigree cats - they're always called blue.

Red is called red in pedigrees - but it's the same as ginger or marmalade or orange or whatever you want to call it!  Mosi is officially red and Jaffa doesn't see why Mosi gets to be red and he doesn't so he's my little red tabby  ;D

There are only actually 2 colours in cats - red and black.  everything else is caused by other genes causing a dilute version, a dispersion of colour via patterning or masking the colour with white.

Interesting thread......

Colours have never really dictated my choice of pusskins, more personality. Although for some reason, I've been less keen on a tortie ....... she says having been chosen by the most sweet little miss last week  :Luv: !!! Piccies below. She is tortie colours but then has cute gingerery stripes running through as well, which you can more clearly in the sun.

My first cat, Minnie, was black and white and the most adorable, gorgeous cat ever. My Nana bought her for me as a surprise, so I didn't get a choice of colour! She died 13 years ago now and I still miss her loads, bringing a tear to my eye now just thinking of her  :'( . I saw the most colourful rainbow at the end of last week and I think it was her way of saying she approves of my 2 new troublesome babies  :Luv: .

When Minnie died we got 2 black fluffballs, Simpkin and Teasle. They are still back with my parents. I chose Teasle and my brother and sister chose Simpkin from the litter. Teasle used to really love me, she used to lie on my pillow at night "digging" and making a nest in my hair and then  purring in my ear. When I moved out of home though, that was it, she hates me now  :P . Whenever I do get to have a cuddle though, I do like to remind her that if it wasn't for me she wouldn't be living where she does and might have gone to a mean family! Simps is all cuddley and loves strokes, cuddles and hairbrushes. As soon as she sees her hairbrush she gets all excited.

And now we're owned by Fergus and Polly as below .........

I think you've missed my point - WHY is is acceptable to say here that you hate, don't like, have an aversion to - whatever, relating to Persians, when it doesnt happen with any other breed on here as far as I've seen? I mean, would you say to a friend with children - I don't like children? no, of course you wouldnt, well its the same thing in my eyes.

Anyway, with regard to preferred colours, which after all, is what we were talking about in the first place - I happen to love colourpointed cats - all colours, all breeds. I like the colour of my moggies too, tabby, dilute torite and ginger and white, but I didnt choose them because of their colour, I chose them because they were either cute, funny, naughty, crazy, feisty, soppy - or all of the above!

Aaww Ruth you know i think spencer is gorgeous , you should post piccys of him more often ..Oh and if ya want a REALLY drooly cat then i'll give seb your addy aswell and he can kip with you before heading off to gills

Gillian, I really dont think anyone was having a pick at persians but am so sorry if you felt like that.  You know my attitude towards their hair LOL..abit tongue in cheek at times but i have top admiration for the owners like yourself who keep them in tip top condition (ie the ones i didnt have to shave  :evillaugh: )

I think people have given their personal preferences and some actually had the nerve to say they werent that keen on red's (how very dare they  :evillaugh: )  But hey...how boring would the world be if we all prefered the same things  :)  Me personally I prefer a longer nose but the "old style persians" as i call them have cute button noses, ahem..just aswell i go for bigger noses though considering hubby is rather well endowed in that facial area   (   :innocent:  but we'll not mention to him i said that   )

I never said I hate dark torties I just prefer other colours. I've never met one before and I'm sure if I did I would love it. After all a cat is a cat and we choose our cats so it is us that get the choice of colour. And it is us who have to live with them so why are we bothered about others liking them?

I have a black cat and not getting upset about people not choosing them.  :shy:

Your right CC, I think some peeps find it hard not to take personally though which i can understand.

I guess there is a bias towards your own pets just like we both are probably with our kids.

But i agree with you totally, no one in this forum would hate any 4 legged cat or animal i'm sure of that but we have individual preferences and i think partly the reason why we all love looking at each others photos so much is the fantastic variety we see within the same species.  Fraser i can honestly say i didnt CHOOSE but then i guess in a way i did as i could have chosen not to let him stay with me.

It really doesnt matter if this thread was about cats, dogs, humans, cars etc we'd all have personal "favorites" and "least fond of"   I mean for me..oooooo what i'd do for an astin but hell suggest i have a robin relient and i'd happily take a box of fire lighters to it  :evillaugh:    In men i always hoped i'd meet a very dark skinned man with an irish accent and what do i have .. a pastey skinned, red headed (well he was LOL ) scots man

Just a little bit about preferences - it'd be a pretty boring forum if we all sat around telling each other how marvellous everything is, people have opinions and preferences and I think that as long as no-one is being abusive or deliberately offensive, it's nice to be free to express that opinion  :).

After all, we all love cats or we wouldn't be here  ;D so I don't think any of us actually hates any particular breed, or, indeed, colour.

It wouldn't do for us all to be the same  ;)

apperently he left home (ran away) when he was about 4, packed up all his stuff into a sheet or something and knotted it onto a pole of some kind as seen in cartoons , put his kilt on and walked up the road (country/farm lane) waited for half an hour then returned home as he got bored

Yes Gill I more than many am well aware of that, and i wasnt condeming so please dont accuse me of doing something i didnt do.  Regardless of anyones experiences after birth the fact they were born means for the biggest majority their mothers thought enough not to have them aborted.  Just a pity for many of us that might have been a better option for the first 16 years !

Ultimately, I know that if a waif or stray turned up on my doorstep, I'd end up taking it in regardless of what colour or breed [or not] it turned out to be. I only went to the CP looking for 1 [2 at most] cats and ended up with 6.

It doesn't take much of a sad story to get me thinking I could squeeze one more in...went to CP foster mum - looked round - no kitties caught my eye - turned to leave and came face to face with a tiny long haired black and white kitten - he'd climbed the fence up to my head height [5'7"] - we looked at each other - he shouted at me -  and the foster mum said the fateful words......oh, that's Humphrey, he tries ever so hard but no-one ever notices him  :(.  It's been 9 years now and he still shouts at me!

A friend of mine has a lovely little non-ped smoke tortie called Muizetta. She's such a sweet little mad madam who is the life and soul of the paaaaarty!  :Luv:

She looks just like a tub of chocolate and caramel ice cream and I think she's beautiful...  ;D

all those who think that torti cats are evil

Could I just clear something up on my own behalf...... I don't hate or even dislike dark torties, I just prefer other colours and seem so I have a choice in the cats that I choose to live with me then thats up to me. Just don't want people thinking I hate them.  :shy:

I have never come across a dark tortie before and I'm sure if I did I would think its just as stunning and loveable as any other colour of cat.

And guess what I have been getting a vistor and she is a DARK TORTIE! I'm starting to care about this cat and wondering if she has an owner or not, she comes for food most nights but don't know wether I'm doing right in feeding her or not incase she's not going home.

(Maybe she has been sent to haunt me lol ) Thats a joke BTW  :evillaugh:

MM In dogs when they are referred to as brindle it usually pertains to the markings and they are normally like stripes.  My 2 greys are brindled.

I guess it would be a canine type equivalent to tabby markings really but the dark "speckled" torties aren't brindled or tabbies although obviously you get tortie tabbies.

Aw Lynn your greys are wonderful!!  My fave type of dog (apart from my Alf, of course!)

I've had quite a few dark tortie fosters recently, nust admit they are lovely but some are quite mad!!

Pepper looks like a smoke tortie to me - she's near enough a spitting image of Muizetta.

You can call dark torties Brindle, think they are classed as that in Messybeast - and some do look brindly. Doesn't matter how many pics of torties are posted, I wont change my mind, it is the personality rather than the colour for me.

They won't all have the same personality though.

Of course not, but torties are just too temperamental for me - I have fostered 3, plus come across 2 neighbourhood ones, and only one not had an aggressive streak in them.

Ezzy has a really good temperament... Well she's really lively and playful and a wacko, but also reeeeally lovely and cuddly and loves to be near people even when she's on a madden...

Most people I've spoken to who have torties say there's are the same... There's always things in their history that could effect it though...

But oh well... Btw all those dark torties are gorgeous! 'Spesh Freckles!

You could really say that about any cat though Desley.

I've had a few bad experiences with gingers but I wouldn't tar them all with the same brush so to speak  ;)

Sasa is not a dark tortie and she is not agressive, just terrified of all people   :'(

I also have had bad experiences with gingers but also have known the most wonderful one who also was terrified of people but came round after about 9 months  ;D

Torties are not any more aggressive or naughty than any other colour.  I hate this thing about 'naughty torties' I think people only say that because once they hear the phrase they look for that behaviour. I have met lots of torties and none of them have been aggressive or naughtier than other cats.
Title: Re: Prefered colours
Post by: CurlyCatz on July 09, 2007, 21:39:02 PM
I still stick with my own experience (which involves many hundreds if not into thousands of cats over the years probs) and in very general terms a higher percent of torties could be fractious to varying degrees over other colours. (cant say we had much of a problem with reds at all but we saw far far less of them)

I think since it is a saying that is well known within veterinary staff there must be something to it other than my own experiences.

That said, of course i've met some super natured ones too.

Well I must have been really really lucky then because my Ellie was an absolute angel and a sweeter natured cat you would be hard pushed to find (sounds like there are a number of Tortie owners on the forum who are having exactly the same experience  ;))

the nicest/sweetest one i knew was called tammy.  She was a vn's cat who she'd taken on whilst working for pdsa in manchester, poor cat had been hit by a bus and had to have a leg amputated, lost an eye and her face was always lop sided due to the extent of the facial trauma and badly fractured jaws (upper and lower)

She was very sweet though, In the end  (10+ years later) i believe Wendy had her on medications for her arthitis (as she had also originally had # pelvis plus various other bones) and also the latter couple of years she was insulin dependant diabetic.

I know rescue people who have had similar experiences with torties - yet I haven't met a nasty ginger, although I have met more torties than gingers admittedly. Surprisingly though, I have a soft spot for temperamental tabbies!!!

hmm well i was never exactly a cat person until i moved into my own place.

but monkey (ginger) is the sofest stupidest lump ever and would never ever hurt anyone.
jasper (tabby) is the same she just wants to be with you all the time and again would never hurt anyone.

does it have anything to do with the way you bring them up?

Every cat is different and certainly their learned experiences with humans will have a bearing on how they act.

Well the "evil" tortie that has been coming in my garden every night for the last couple of months for some food, finally let me touch her today. I want to find out if she is a stray - She doesn't look underweight but wonder why she shares claptons  leftovers with the hedgehogs?
She used to run as soon as she saw me and I have been working on her slowly so not sure what to do now as It looks like I will be able to get her soon but don't want to take someone elses cat.

Is this a paper collar job?

My persians mean the world to me, and I find these sort of comments highly offensive and hurtful - not just in this thread, there have been several over the time I've been on this forum - I havent commented before, but felt I just had to today...

Gillian, as a breed they make me sad solely because of the breathing and grooming difficulties they can have. I have a friend that had a persian called Wilbur - he was grey and I thought he was adorable. He was one of the most cuddly, unassuming cats I've ever met. If that's an example of the persian temperament, I can see why you'd be defensive!

My mum has a torti and she is utterly lovely. (well, to me. She used to swipe at my younger sisters legs all the time!) I have a black, black and white, ginger tabby and a grey tabby. The only colour I've "chosen" is the black and white. The other three came to me from various homes, that were having trouble finding homes for them or decided they couldn't train them. I couldn't love them more if I'd scoured the world for each one of them - but I didn't have to because they were meant to be part of my family! ;) Parsley was a tabby too, and her personality was completely different to my younger tabby. I miss her. :(

I have to admit to thinking greys are gorgeous too. Pictures of the little one needing a home please, Dawn!  ;D

As for wild cats - I don't think I have a favourite. I think they're all magnificent.
