Title: Covcats - the luckiest black cat? maybe not.....
Post by: Angiew on February 18, 2011, 05:18:24 AM
Here was I, at 2am, deciding if the get a few hours sleep before taking OH to the airport when the phone rang.
It was the police.
Someone had reported an injured cat and the police were phoning round to report it. Apparently they were told the cat was lying in the middle of the road and when they got out to check it growled and crawled away with an obvious injury.

The RSPCA had said they couldn't get out to it and as much as I didn't want to go out I said I would.
Luckily knowing Jill would be up I rang her to go out with me. In any case the cat was not far from Jill and as it happens she was worried it might have been her black bengal who hadn't come in.

Picked Jill up and as we drew close to where the cat had been seen a nice RSPCA man drew up so all three of us went looking for this cat. We found it under a car and it was obviously hurt and badly distressed and growling like mad. The RSPCA man had to use his grabber to get it out from under the car. The RSPCA man said while he was talking to the person who found it, he could here the cat screaming in the background.

Jill and I took the cat to vets now while the RSPCA man phoned to say we were on the way.

The cat was found to have a chip and they phoned the owners who were reluctant to come out at first but then the man agrred to come out. Mog, the cat started crying when the owner went into the surgery so he obviously recognised the sound of his owner.

The upshot is the cat is not insured , the man said he couldn't afford treatment (Vets now quote £600) and he signed it over to us. Not a word of thanks for being out at 3am in the morning but I think he was probably too embarrassed and he rushed off. Though he (or his wife on the phone) did ask if they could get the cat back from us once it was treated.

Just got back in now, we are not sure of Mogs injuries and I shall have to fetch him at 8am to take it into the day vet. The good thing is , as its so late Vets now said they are unlikely to do a great deal to it but will monitor and maybe give fluids if needed so hopefully the costs for tonight won't be too bad.

For all people reading this please keep your cat in at night else this could be you at vets now. This is what happens when you don't , cats are more prone to RTA's at night - all rescues push this for a very good reason.

fingers crossed and purrs vibes that all goes well for Mog over the next few hours and he is not too badly injured..... and I've just realised, I am going to have to work out where to put him........   (OH has a nice cat free music room for a week!.... anyone remember last year?....)

Mog is now at the vets.

He has a broken hock but otherwise seems in good shape. He will have an xray to see if the leg is repairable.
Told them we would not want the cheaper option of amputation at this stage.......

There is a bit of head trauma but I guess he won't get a good looking at until he is under.

The angry puss of this morning has become a docile boy with a big miaowwww....

keep those vibes going....

Yes Angie don't remind me.  Had just spoken about that to OH and he said if he was away and something had been in his model room as long as it was fine that would be okay.  He had better not go away then!  Suppose you won't be coming to meet up with Vikki then today as per my earlier email - before I saw your earlier one to me!

Well done, glad you got there as well as the larger charity.  Well done Gill as well!

I hope the cat makes a good recovery.

So tell me Angie.  What are the chances of you handing him back to previous owners?

Will Vets Now charge Covcats full price?

Have everything crossed for this poor boy  :(

Hi,

vets now have been good in the past in that they have lost a couple of visits - mind you they have been when we have taken in a dying kitten so perhaps they just ignored it. I do live in fear that something like this will bring that to their attention. :shify:
They do charge full price but what has also happened in the past is that they decide not to itemise some of the work (I'm thinking of a kitten with a prolapsed rectum we took in).

His previous owners have indeed just phoned (woke me up) and asked if they can see him again and how he is and they went through the "you take him , fix him up and then put him up for homing...." and I can fully understand the madness of it as he has owners .... I would feel the same way if he was mine (though of course I would not have hesitated at the cost).
I think they were shocked that they were quoted £600 for the nights stay and asked if it was a normal sort of cost which we on here know is for the emergency service.

Anyway, I told them that we have no choice in rehoming him, as mad as it sounds, as we have to protect ourselves. Else I would be getting early morning calls all the time to deal with these sort of emergencies and we would just be funding everyones emergency vet bills.

I also said that if they do want him back maybe we could come to an arrangement about repayments but now was not the time to have that discussion. (The one time the group did that, I don't think we ever got all the money back).

So after that I phoned the vet to see if there was any news. He said the xrays were not taken how he wanted them but it looked as though no bones are broken but all the ligaments torn. They are redoing some of the xrays.
If that is the case it will be support and rest that will heal him. They have also found that he does indeed have a fractured skull, so that is the more serious injury, but it looks as though it is over the sinus and the fluid/gas they can feel is actually from his sinus so he may also be lucky there.

up to now costs have been

the estimated £300 at vets now and £250 today. And it pisses me off totally that the vets always charge a consultation fee on top of what was paid overnight >:(

anaesthesia/sedation £80, consult £21, hospital £14, assorted materials £10, bandage £28 and xrays £90 if anyone is interested (and I know some of you will be).

Poor Mog, I do hope he'll be alright. :(
It really pulled at the heart strings when you said he cried when he heard his owner's voice.  Do you think it is a question of can't pay, or won't pay?

Sending lots of love and get well soon vibes for Mogs xxxxx

Re xrayed and things not looking as positive.

Skull fracture is as before and hopefully will cause no problems. Diaphragm and insides all seem to be intact.

Its his ankle that is quite bad.

Broke the bottom end of his leg bone, a couple of fracture in the foot bone and the achilles tendon is pulling at the sticky out bit of his ankle. So prognosis there is may be able to fit an external bracket thing or his leg may have to come off. Not suitable for pinning or just a cast. They will make a decision next week.

Hes got ABs and metacam to go.

He hasn't weed and his bladder is quite full so if he doesn't go overnight he needs to go back in morning to have his bladder emptied.

Booked in at 9-30 on monday to get his dressing changed.

Just put him in pen and he's a bit spaced out at the moment so will leave him for a couple of hours to rest (as long as he doesn't shout the house down and spook everyone else).

poor mite.

This is such a hard thing and without insurance very high costs, sounds like the ownwer cared a lot and was just struck dumb at costs.

Who did the xrys Angie cos it cost me £156 for 3 xrays the first being £100! for Duchas leg. Were they subsidized by your vet if done there?

I hope Mog recovers well

I'm not aware of it being discounted at this stage, it was the estimate so the bill may come in different if he decided to take more Xrays that he originally was going to.

Mog has managed to get the banana off his leg so I will be taking him back first thing regardless of whether he pees or not.

At the moment I am worried about his condition, His eyes are very wide and he has not responded to torchlight. Jill tells me he was like that last night as well, I just didn't notice.
He respiration rate is up a bit as well and he is slightly non responsive and stiff limbed, by now any anaesthetic should have worn off.
My immediate instinct is to rush him back to vets but if there is something sinister going on in his head they will not be able to do anything to stop it. Lets hope he is just going into some sort of sleep phase and not slipping into a coma.

Jill says I should at any rate prepare myself for him not being here in the morning.

I am about to try and get some sleep but will check on him when I wake which no doubt I will quite often.

Vibes for a peaceful night for him whatever the outcome.

still with us!
has used his tray overnight but will be taking him in to get his leg redressed after my coffee. I'll also get them to give him a shot of pain killers and ab's . He's still not eating so I don't want to give him the metacam.

he seems a tad more with it body posture wise. Eyes are still vacant. body temp a bit more 'normal'.
Will see what the professionals think but every day is good for recovery...... (I hope!)

Well, he is eating/wearing food.

The first couple of tries of spoon feeding AD yesterday only resulted in Portia getting an extra feed.
But since yesterday evening he has been accepting AD watered down to the consistency of liquivite from a spoon by lapping/pouring.

the first two feeds he couldn't move his tongue very well, only to lick his nose - albeit helping a little in the post clean up department. Today he has a stronger tongue and just now has even cleaned most of his own chest. The last feed he had a few licks of his chest but not much. The good thing of course is that I was able to give him the meticam this morning.

Don't think there is any sight  but he seems more alert.

I don't know what he does when I'm not there, but bandage no 2 has moved south and will probably be off by the morning which is OK as he has a 9-30 appointment to get a new one on.

I shall actually try him on the liquivite next feed and see what he thinks of it as we have finished the first tin of AD and I only have one left. It seems a shame to need to water it down when i have the ready made stuff.

Your continued well wishes for Mog and of course Squirt.

As predicted bandage no 2 came off over night. Mog was at vets all morning as they were running late and asked if they could bandage after surgery. (giving me the opportunity to mop out my hall after my bath and waste pipe had a disagreement this morning and get the plumber man in to mediate).

The vets have confirmed my thoughts of late last night that he does have some vision - I thought he was watching me moving things in his pen and put it down to wishful thinking, but at the vets if they dropped something in front of him his eyes would track it down a bit. He is also responding a little to light shone in his eyes. Pupils still dilated.
He has also lapped up the AD on his own now so I have left him some wet food in his pen to see if he can tackle that.
So today he is sporting a nice pink bandage. Have an appt. for friday at 9-30 to see vet but no doubt will need to get another bandage before then - I have no idea how they come off so quickly, perhaps he is circuit training when I'm out of the room.

Just caught up on Mogs story and its very sad that owners who do seem to care about their pets don't have insurance in case something like this happens. It is the reason that both of my girls are insured, as with the best will in the world, I couldn't find £1000+ plus if something were to happen to them and they needed an extended vets stay/operation.

I remember the lecture I gave my mum after Casper's accident because she had never got round to getting him insured. Luckily she could just about afford the vets bills and has a long standing relationship with her vet who 'forgot' to charge for some things. After Caspers operation to remove his leg and all the emergency and aftercare, I know how much these things can cost and also how long it takes for the poor puss cat to recover so I wish Mogs all the best and hope he feels better every day. He's a lucky boy to have such dedicated people looking after him!

Sadly the insurance market has priced owners with older cats out of the market and I love my two birmans very much but cant afford the shocking prices anymore, which would be over £100 a month on an offchance.

My two younger cats are still insured at  but if the prices jump up much more I will have to stop those too.

I am a huge advocate of insurance but the prices have become silly money...............to be honest so have the vet prices!
Title: Re: Covcats - the luckiest black cat? maybe not.....
Post by: Bryony84 on February 22, 2011, 13:47:37 PM
Blimey, I didn't realise the prices rose so high when they are older - my 2 are insured for around £17 per month for both at 3 1/2 years old, I wouldn't be able to justify £100 per month each, if mine rose to that level in the future I would have to look at opening a bank account and just putting some money in every month as a vet fund!
Title: Re: Covcats - the luckiest black cat? maybe not.....
Post by: Gill (sneakiefeline) on February 22, 2011, 14:52:14 PM
No would be over £100 for both but on a pension thats just not viable............last year it was under £40 .

Thats a hell of a price for young cats Bryony cos Sasa who is 11/12 is Just over £13 and Misa who is 9 is about £11 I think.

Sadly the whole of my slush fund of £600 plus has been used on the birmans cos one or both have been ill ever since end of Oct when I cancelled the insurance........sigh

Sorry for taking this thread off track and send more good vibes to Mogs

Mog is doing OK. Bandage has survived the weekend. Redress on wednesday and at the weekend I may set up a pen in the living room for him.... jury's out at the moment on that.

Can't seem to wean him off the AD diet mind you.........

Mog has not eaten today and I took him to the vet this afternoon. No temperature but I think he is in a lot of pain at the moment. He hissed at vets when he was being moved and refuses to put any weight on the leg at all.
hopefully tomorrows visit to redo the dressing/splint will make him feel better, or at least the sedation will.

Judith is picking up Mog as I type. My car is poorly.

Vet thinks he was in pain and this was stopping him eating. The nurses have been hand feeding him AD today.
He needed a couple of stitches as something had split open  - I tried not to take in too much detail
how can I be so squeamish?

He is sporting a nice new dressing, though I have yet to see what colour and this will need doing again next week or maybe not be replaced depending on how things are.

I'll try him with some more chicken and if not AD and update later.

Mogs is pretty much the same today. He had half of his AD brekkie (with metacam), licked a bit of liquivite, licked the water off some boiled cod fillet, and maybe crunched a couple of biscuits.

I also tried him with some tinned tuna and again he mainly lapped up the liquid. This also prompted me to sort out the last 30 tins of tuna in the bin, 3 had blown and the rest are now washed and stored in a cupboard. My utility room now reminds me of my teenage years living in Folkestone (those bits I can remember through the haze of time, alcohol and other things ) ......

So he is getting some nutrition in.

We know he can see something, but I'm not convinced his eyes are that good. I tried playing with a bright yellow feather on a stick toy, and though he watched the movement it didn't register as much in the lower part of his sight. It also confused him a bit and he gave off a nervous miaow.  Only time will tell as its two weeks tonight since his RTA.

Not really much to update.
Mog is still the same. He has been losing weight but then was a beefy cat so it may do some good when it comes to having to build his leg up.
He didn't eat much yesterday so I went out and bought an Argos value hand blender (all of £4-87 or something) and today mushed up a sachet of food and he promptly ate most of it up.

Vet visit still on for wednesday (when I take the tabby boys as well to get the  odour control done (the other one has come back and is awaiting collection!)).

Rosella's just reminded me to post an update

Mog went to the vets this morning to have his stitches removed and the vet is happy with him.  :Party 3:

Mog is happily eating his own biscuits and has started complaining loudly about being left in his pen too long as I have been letting him wander around the last couple of days.  :Luv2:

He's not too keen on the other cats and doesn't move around a great deal but can and does when he wants to.

So I guess its just a bit of body building for him now  :boxer:

Mog seems to be a great deal of pain today.
I have given him some metacam and he is now sleeping peacefully (or dead!) under my bed.

I shall take him to vets when he stirs and seek some advice about pain control as I'm unhappy to keep him on metacam - he's had enough of it over the last 5 weeks.

well back from vet. no temp advised cage rest and metacam for a week. vets own cat has an amputated tail and says it still bothers her sometimes after 2 years.
when i got back, OH in for lunch and told me he'd been running around downstairs this morning so perhaps he's just overdone it.

good news is yourvet on herald ave opening up 24hrs from monday. That'll be a blow for other vets (and more so for vets now!)

The more 24/7 vets the better

Yes I understand that cats (or people) can have probs after the removal of a limb from phantom limb pain and it can go on for the rest of their live but often it will gradually go. I do hope that Mogs gradually feels better and doesnt suffer too much.

Sounds like it comes and goes and he is in the very early days

I let him out briefly but he does like chasing other cats, sigh..... so perhaps he's only got himself to blame if he bangs his stump.

Title: Re: Covcats - the luckiest black cat? maybe not.....
Post by: Angiew on April 01, 2011, 13:57:10 PM
no sorry, it is at the joint but it still looks a little stumpy where the skin is folded over. I suppose its more obvious because theres no fur

Post by: Gill (sneakiefeline) on April 01, 2011, 18:48:54 PM
Gradually it will just cover with fur as Duchas has and also they start to walk with the other leg more central to balance better but that will take time and they use their tail to help balance too

Poor old Mog has been at the vets overnight, He was in a lot of pain yesterday and I rushed him in with what I feared was a blocked bladder.

he was dripping urine and they emptied his bladded with a syringe. He has passed a stone and other than that things look fine.He had a catheter put in last night and they took some xrays that did not show any problems or any more stones. He hasn't peed yet so I shall pick him up after work.

We could have gone further and they did say they could open him up to see if there was a problem but we agreed that at this stage we'd take him back and see what happens as it seems daft to put him through an operation when hopefully this may be a one-off.

Mog has now been with me over a year.

Poor old mog is still at the vets. They phoned this afternoon and said they wanted to do the op. It was done late afternoon and the vets have just phoned up to say they found some more stones in his bladder . They are sending some off to see what sort of stones.
The vet said he would have probably blocked up again.

he's to remain in overnight and they will have him tomorrow as they want to see him pee. He is currently coming round from the op and is OK.

sadly, they told judith that they had to put a raggie to sleep at the weekend with the same problem because the owners could not afford the treatment. :'(

Mog is back with me this evening and is sporting a fabulous tummy wax and tummy tuck - he looks years younger!

he is happy to be back and has meds to take. The vet was very taken with him and demands I phone her up tomorrow to let her know how he's doing. He has to go back for a check up at the weekend.

He seems happy to be back home and is hopefully relaxing in his pen as I type, savouring the sounds and smells of his home for the past year.

Fingers crossed for a good recovery!

mog is back to his old tricks of not eating very well or drinking much! so its AD diet at the moment the only thing he seems to begrugingly tolerate (just like last year). I'm sure he's ready for biscuits but he can't have them now so the next few weeks will be interesting while we try to find a 'normal' food.
Still on ABs , loxicam (what little he eats from the spike morning feed!) and some sphincter relaxant thing to make him pee - which he does little and often. Having put him in my bedroom boy do I know, scratch, scratch , sneeze. (He seems to have developed a sneeze which must be uncomfortable with an abdominal op).

However he does remain bright.

 :tired:

my cats and Mac and Pecan can't understand why I'm now a no-go zone at night.
Title: Re: Covcats - the luckiest black cat? maybe not.....
Post by: Angiew on March 13, 2012, 20:41:27 PM
Mr mog was checked over saturday and they were happy with his progress. His stone results are not through yet.
Because of his wanting biscuits we have him on hills c/d (renal) which he is ok with and perversely he has taken an interest in wet food since I have put biccies down.

He has not used his tray today which is a bit worrying so if its still clean tomorrow may trot him back to vets. He is acting like a normal cat though. (as normal as he has ever acted that is)

He also had some visitors this evening who have gone away to think about it. I've suggested if they want to go ahead, we all go for a vet check together so that questions can be asked about when he can go and what future care he may need.

Well,
Mog has peed well overnight , albeit with more than a few visits to the tray (in fact 6 in the last 30 minutes, currently digging as I type!).
He is scoffing and wanting fuss as normal.
I have had an email from his visitors and we are going to have a trip to the vet this morning to discuss all things Mog.

Well I was going to say whoever is interested in him is an angel so I'll say it to your face  :naughty:  I'm sure many would be put off by his health issues, then there's the cat racists  >:(

:crossed: that he gets to come and live with you

Oh, and  :welcome: to Purrs  ;D

 :welcome: Tracy  ;D

I'm thinking Mogs repeat litter tray usage may be down to his newly flushed and stitched bladder/urethra,  but I'd be very careful to monitor his tray usage when he moves in tomorrow (?  ;D ) in case he has ongoing waterworks issues. Hopefully it's just a bit of post-op swelling that's causing his frequent urination but best to be sure with his history.

As he's quite used to cage rest (and sinbin timeout, being such a bouncy boy) it might be worthwhile investing in a folding cage for him, then he can be penned when he needs to be rested / monitored.

Yes, you are an angel. I'm sure Mog will be the luckiest black cat after all.  :)

Mog is a bit of a star isn't he  :Luv:  Glad he is (hopefully) joining your family and hope you have enough time to settle him in with the other furries in your home. If you are able to post pics of em all, we always love pics  :)

   for all you have done for him to date Angie.  Am sure it will be a wrench for you but a happy one .....

Mog went to Tracy yesterday.
Thursday he used his tray well, was eating well and chasing after flies so I think he was ready for the move.

Have not heard how he's doing but suspect he's been sulking so there is little to report. Or at least thats what the sensible me is telling the anxious foster mum me. I bet Tracy is also feeling a tad nervous as well.

He went into his basket quietly, didn't complain all the way over there and did not seem to mind the curiousity of the existing family members, and slunk off to hide behind the couch so I did not get my final cuddle.

Hi Angie and all Mog fans. He came out from behind the sofa about 10 last night. He saw the others and went straight back in. He came out a couple more times but changed his mind again. When I gave them their supper just before bedtime he heard us in the kitchen and came out. I decided to shut him in the kitchen/diningroom over night as I didn't want anyone picking on him. I left his dinner with him his water and tray. In the morning Jon went down and he had got into a very small gap under a dresser its only about 3 inches. He got stuck trying to get back out so I was frantically getting the draw out, he was fine and the gap is no more. He ate all his dinner in the night and used his and one of the other littertrays several times. He was pretty spooked this morning and Barney and Penny  ended up as bad, Arnie just went back to sleep. He decided to go up stairs and hide in the walk in cupboard in our bedroom. About 10.30 I went up with the Argos catalogue and just sat on the floor talking to him. After about an hour he came out had a wonder round and some fuss and Barney walked in hissing so he ran back. Then Barney went to bed and he started wondering round again, came back for lots of fuss, Barney came back in so I kept telling him (Barney that is ) that he was a plonker  and he wants to be friends and slowly he started to calm down.  He is still upstairs at the moment but I am going back up soon to sit at the top of the stairs to see if I can persuade him down. I want him to come down in his own time when he feels ready. Will let you know what happens next, Tracy,

oh well, early days...

remember that he is used to being upstairs as a norm and may well take a while to come down on his own. He only made it 2 or 3 times into our downstairs rooms and was then promptly picked up and put back in the hall (My fosters are restricted to upstairs so my cats can have free access in and out via the cat flap).

I am sure the fusses will win out

Hi, Mog is spread out on the sofa fast asleep at the moment. He decided to come down and do some exploring about 6 o clock and has staid down all evening. He still hasn't eaten much yet. They all seem to be chilling  out a bit more . I have got a couple of nice photo's but the KB is too big and I don't know how to change it. If I can work it out I will post them here. tracy

Hi, here is my Mog blog.        Saturday night I decided  to leave them all with the run of the house, they were as good as gold. He started off lying at the side of our bed but then decided to go down stairs. So far its going really great. They are getting used to his querky little ways. Sunday morning he was joining in with chasing the stick with Barney and Pen, which is Penny's favourite game. He did seem to spend the majority of Sunday under the sofa but he is very confident with the others when he comes out, I think he decided he just needed a nice quiet rest or its just a habit. He does have a bad habit of trying to get in gaps that are too small for him so I have been blocking all the gaps under the dressers. He doesnt have much interest in eating. I found this morning if I add others bits in with his c/d ie: hills and Whiskas Kitbits he seems to eat quite a bit more. So although its not ideal, its working for now. I will try slowly changing it to just c/d. He is enjoying his excercise. He's up and down the stairs quite often and he is pretty fast.  Right I'm off to work on the patio. I am making it nice and secure so they can have some outside space.   Tracy...
