Title: Meet my new FOSTER Sasha -UPDATE!
Post by: Gillian Harvey on January 31, 2010, 15:04:09 PM
I've put foster in big letters just so's you know!  ;)

Sasha is 15 and is a chocolate point persian. I'm fostering her through via the Chinchilla, Silver Tabby & Smoke Cat Society welfare, which isnt far from me. Jo, who runs the welfare side asked me to look after Sasha (and her sister) because her pens are full at the mo. Sadly, about a week after I'd spoken to Sasha's owner about the 'girls' (Sasha and her sister Autumn),  she phoned me to say that Autumn had gone downhill and vet thought kidney failure, so she was put to sleep. The owners are emigrating to Australia on Monday, so they brought Sasha over to me yesterday and now she's safe and sound in my spare room.

Considering whats been going on these past few weeks, losing her sister who she'd lived with for 15 yrs, the chaos of a house being packed up ready for sale, spending 2 nights with a neigbour because the owners had completed on the house sale, and then shipped over to me - she's doing remarkably well!

She's completely deaf due to an ear problem very early on in life and she has a head tilt (difficult to photograph cos she doesnt lift her had up completely) and one of her eyes isnt quite right - I didnt really notice yesterday, but it looks sort of cloudy, but I'm sure they didnt mention anything to do with her eyes (mind you, they did come with their 4 children  :scared: the youngest of which was 2 and I was finding it difficult to concentrate LOL! )- anywyay I'm going to phone them to ask before they go away.

LOL! don't start!   :innocent:

Think it was a ploy by Jo really, giving me a colourpoint to foster  ;) The owners did say it would be nice if she could stay here, but no pressure, hmmm!

Carol, yes 15's a good age, but I've had several lived to 18 or so, and Amber was in her 20's  :) - and my Zeta is 16 now.

Sasha spent a lot of the night meowing, she was quiet for ages and I must have fallen back asleep, then it started again!

Funny you should say that....I have, just this minute, been brushing her LOL! (and picking out the knots, my favourite pastime!)

She is a funny little thing, she  meows a lot to herself, she often doesnt realise I'm in the room because she's deaf, but then she'll waddle over to me and fling herself onto her back!

Dave talks to himself all the time, luckily he isn't deaf and I can tell him to shut up, which he does but there is no reason for it, he just squeaks and mutters away quite loudly at various times during the day :evillaugh:

Title: Re: Meet my new FOSTER Sasha -UPDATE!
Post by: Gillian Harvey on February 02, 2010, 16:03:23 PM
Well I've been to the vet with Sasha today and there is something wrong with both her eyes! (I phoned the owners before they went to Oz and they hadnt noticied anything particular wrong with they eye I thought looked cloudy) - the eye that is cloudy has at some point been ulcerated and there is likely little or no vision in that one, the other eye (which I thought looked relatively normal) actually has a cataract forming - plus there is bleeding behind the retina, and probably some vision in this eye - at the moment.

so on that basis vet checked her blood pressure - of course it was sky high!! - that would account for the yowling through the night (and day sometimes!). I then requested blood test for kidney function etc plus T4 for thryoid, plus she had a cat flu/enteritis booster and some drops to put in her ulcerated eye  She's been given Amlodipine (sp?) for her blood pressure - never used this before, anyone any experience with it? Its a human drug apparently, and I had to sign a disclaimer. Oh, and she has a heart murmour! We await the kidney/T4 tests results.......

My vet did wonder if it would be better to have her pts - but, in the little time she's been here, she seems to have adapted remarkably well, considering she has more disabilities than I previously thought and she's had a lot to go through lately. She's eating really well, she purrs like mad when I stroke her, rolls over on her back, she doesnt appear stressed in any way. She certainly doesnt seem like a cat who wants to give up.

Poor soul but from what you say Gillian she doesn't sound to want to give up.  Our Pep's the same, and his blindness was, we think due to untreated bp - but he takes a different drug, plus his thyroid meds, Fortekor for his heart and he's deaf but happy and full of determination.  Hope that Sasha's other results come back ok

Poor thing. Mogs had high blood pressure and she yowled at night a few times. I didnt know there was a problem though until she collapsed one day. Her bp was stabalised using istin but the vet did say last year he thought she was losing her sight even though her bp was now in normal ranges. She was on istin for about 4yrs with no problems though.
I hope Sasha is ok

I send loads of good wishes for her and sounds like she is enjoying yoir compnay

I cant remember the bp meds that Kocka was on but she had detached retinas that flapped so she was blind on and off and one minute she was Ok and then she was blind and I couldnt believe it, cos it literally happened overnight

Ah, I didnt know that Amlodipine is Istin - thanks Carol  :thanks:

Thanks for the heads up about the meds, yes, your'e right Clare, I've got to cut them into 8ths  - crikey, they are small enough already!

The owners did give me £60, which would have been enough to cover consultation plus booster, as I thought that was all we were dealing with at the time, apart from just checking out the eye, and they did say if I needed anymore they would send some money once they were in Oz. The rescue said that they won't see me out of pocket, but I'm going to contact Jo tomorrow and let her know the latest - hopefully I'll have the kidney/T4 results by then. My bill today was £200  (I did take Zeta as well, so some of that was hers, but not much) Mind you, once this initial large bill for tests etc is out of the way, the meds themselves arent going to be too expensive per month.

If you can get powder down Sasha in one way or another, crushing a tablet in a small pestle and mortar or with the side of a large knife and then splitting the powder with a old fashioned razor blade is usually the easiest way of dividing into equal parts. A proper tablet cutter (from a pharmacy) will do quarters if it's not a crumby tablet, but not eighths.

One of my cats, Rosie, is blind and often makes the most blood curdling wails at night (think tom cats fighting by moonlight) which have me sitting bolt upright in bed, heart pounding.    :scared:   I am not sure why she is worse at night, as she is completely  blind, but perhaps because everyone is in bed, house is still etc?

Sasha is GORGEOUS - that last pic of her is  :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:

Yes, thats exactly what it sounded like! scarey!  :scared:

I never thought of crushing the tabs either, thanks FF  :thanks: - should have seen me trying to cut them into 8ths this morning, bits of pill shooting all over the shop LOL! In the words of Julia Roberts - 'sllippery little suckers'!!! I cut into 8ths and then counted what I had in front of me and it was only 6 pieces!  - still havent found those other bits  I've got a pestle and mortar that I crush Sam's Rutin in. Sasha took the miniscule bit of tablet this morning ok in a bit of Webbox  :sneaky:

She seems ok today, I'm not sure what to expect from the Istin, whether it acts straight away? my vet didnt say and I forgot to ask. Still havent heard back about the kidney/T4 test.

Yep, Pep's are also Istin, they have to be cut into 8ths and the pill cutter is as much use as a choc teapot.  I end up with all sizes but just put some bits together.  I actually just mix it into his food along with his Vidalta, it's the Fortekor which I have the most problem getting down him - he smells it a mile off  :sneaky:

Just had a quick look round the net - amlodipine is crushed for both paediatric and enteral (tube) feeding and studies suggest the drug is as stable as tablets. Apparently some will mix easily with water, but I no longer have an ATHENS login so no detail.  :-[  Maybe someone's vet can get access if you need it.

"Amlodipine 1 mg/mL suspension (90 days stability): 6 ... Some brands of amlodipine tablets disperse readily in water (see above) and can be safely ..."

Tbh I've not tried it Gillian  but I will do and can break it in half thanks.   I used to put his Vidalta in a Webbox but he seems to be taking that ok now mixed in food - it's def the Fortekor which puts him off.

Rosiecat thats what Mogs did too. Maybe you should get her blood pressure checked as blindness can be caused by high blood pressure?

Gill if you PM me your address I'll get the tablets in the post to you no problem.

I hope Sasha is doing well today. I think the istin worked quickly for Mogs, they kept her in overnight to stabilise her to begin with and when she came home we had no more yowls (well apart from Amber not accepting her  ;))

Title: Re: Meet my new FOSTER Sasha -UPDATE!
Post by: Gillian Harvey on February 05, 2010, 18:25:22 PM
Sasha's appetite isnt so good these past few days - this is since the vet visit and since she started the Istin - could it be the Istin reducing her appetite I wonder - or could it be the booster? (she only had a cat flu/enteritis booster - the owners couldnt remember when she'd last had boosters) you know, I was in 2 minds as to whether to booster her or not, wonder if its just too much for her system at her age? but vet advised would be good idea as she will eventually be mixing with the other cats, so I went with it, not sure know if I've done the right thing for her now  :(

She's not hyperthryoid, but her kidneys are prob early stage dysfunction, creatinine and urea not too high (not got the results in front of me yet) but something inthe blood showed azotemia, so she'll be strarting on Fortekor as well now. Funny isnt it? She seemed ok before any treatment (I mean eating well and happy in herself) and then we start treatment and things go downhill - makes you wonder sometimes doesnt it? too much medicating perhaps - just because we can - is it right to do though?
Title: Re: Meet my new FOSTER Sasha -UPDATE!
Post by: Janeyk on February 05, 2010, 18:32:34 PM
Sorry to hear her appetite isn't good, it could be the boosters I know my cats have always reacted that way for 24-48 hrs after.   I know what you mean about the meds though it does make you wonder when they get side effects.  Hopefully it will just be the boosters and she will start to pick up again soon

must admit I do not intend to have any blood tests done on mine as long as they seem happy and healthy

there's a lot of money being made out of testing and medicating, and I am a bit sceptical myself - but then I and cats go back to the days before there were these tests and treatments, and cats didn't seem to die that much younger

Bonnie's fine with her booster BUT I remember Smudge was always fed up and didn't eat much for a few days after.

Hope she comes around soon bless her.  :Luv2:

It's probably just a mixture of things cos she's had a lot to deal with lately and she will soon be ok hopefully.

It could be stress cos a lot has happened to her in a short time.

I dont like lots of meds and stuff and Franta gets no more boosters on two vets recommendation and I am also stopping Duchas now cos I reckon at 16yrs old enough is enough.

I think we do over vaccinate but then we are given no choice by the vets here.

Franta, Ducha and Sasa cant be pilled and suspect I wouldnt be able to do Misa, although the vets can, so I can do jabs for Franta but thats about it.

As the big cats are not eating very well at moment and birmans never have, food hidden things arent an option either.

Sorry to hear her appetite isn't good, it could be the boosters I know my cats have always reacted that way for 24-48 hrs after.

Yes, think you were right, appetite improved now  - was probably panicking too soon!  :-[ . Mind you she's still not eating everything up, but sometimes she goes back to it - which in fact is exactly what she's doing now just as I typed that LOL!

She's been out of her room and explored all the upstairs rooms, and she's been up and down the stairs, so she's getting her bearings, and last night she came and sat on my lap for the first time. I've got that settee my neighbour's gave me a while back, in her room, and I hadnt seen her jump up on it at all, normally she just sits on the carpet or in the barrel bit of the cat tree, so I was quite surprised when I sat on the settee and next thing she's landed on my lap! Course I had to stay there for the next hour didnt I, so as not to disturb her  ;)

She's certainly got some vision because you can see in this pic she's looking up to my hand as I tried to attract her attention.

She's met Ben today  :scared: - he was the only one upstairs this morning, curled up on the landing - normally i close off downstairs to let Sasha have the run of the upstairs, so, as Ben is usually quite chilled with newcomers, I thought I'd just leave him there and let Sasha wander. Anyway, she made a beeline for him, went straight up to him - and hissed at him! He just looked at her, then with a sort of shrug of his shoulders, got up, walked straight past her into 'her' room - with Sasha in hot pursuit LOL! He wasnt bothered by the fact she was following him round, then he climbed up onto the top of the cat tree - she couldnt work out where he'd gone because of her poor eyesight, and spent ages looking for him  :evillaugh:

I guess so, because I can't see her going anywhere else now - Jo who runs the welfare for the persian rescue club reckons she would be very difficult to home - I mean, who's going to want a deaf, nearly blind, 15 year old persian with a heart murmur and onset of kidney disease? - Answers on a postcard please!  ;)

Well, I would have loved to have had her but sadly Byron wouldn't she'd be very upset and probably leave home  :(

Aww,  :) - in all honesty I think i knew I was going to fail at fostering again the moment she stepped out the cat basket  ;)

Not so sure about that Gill, she had an unplanned meeting with both Sam and Joe today. I'd left them all downstairs apart from Ben who was on the landing again, supposedly all asleep, so thought it was safe to leave the downstairs door open while I just popped upstairs to Sasha - yes, well, they cottoned on to the fact that there was uneaten food upstairs and suddenly they arrived - I have to say Sash was NOT impressed and there was some very unladyilke swearing from her  :evillaugh:

Only one other cat, her sister, who had to be pts just before Sasha came to me. I think it was the fact they were all coming into 'her' room, it might be different when she goes to meet them downstairs - or maybe not!   :scared:

Maybe you could carry her into the kitchen when they are all eating so she can see them all together and then maybe a few at a time in the room.  Good luck.

If Sasha can't see or hear properly she probably won't be cottoning on to any kitty body language. Perhaps she is just fearful of them as she doesn't know if they are friend or foe?  :scared:

Yes I reckon thats the case, if only I could tell her that they are friendly (well most of 'em!  ;) )

I don't know about taking her downstairs Mary - for one she's not too happy about being picked up and with her not being able to see very well she might get a bit disorientated being plucked from her 'safe' room and put into the lion's den!  :evillaugh:

You surely can! - don't need much encouragement LOL! She's doing fine, starting to mingle with the others a bit more, but still spends a lot of time in 'her' room. She has most of her meals up there - BUT, yesterday evening, while I was preparing their food downstairs, she suddenly appeared in the kitchen and decided she was gonna eat with the rabble! She's seems much better now her BP is under control and she's been on fortekor for her kidneys for nearly a month now - and I've seen improvement in her appetite and the way she eats - i.e. she will now eat everything on her plate in one go, rather than picking at it and coming back later - so I can feed her at regular mealtimes now - the only thing different to the others is that she has an extra wet food meal at bedtime (when she retires to her room again LOL!) whilst the others have a biscuity meal (she can't have biscuits at all due to a previous bladder problem).

The others are fine with her - apart from Lacie, who I think, is a bit scared of her, mainly because she blundered right into Lacie once because she couldnt see her and I wasnt quick enough to step in - Lacie hasnt forgotten that incident!
