Found this on my local council website - it's not quite what I'd like to see (I'd prefer an attempt at contacting the owner too, and a minimal storage time to allow people to collect their pet) but Well Done Waltham Forest for at least nodding in the direction of humanity. Think I'll drop them a line to suggest this.

Where dead pets are collected, the Council will try and scan the animal to find out if it is microchipped, and retain scanned information and collars for a period after disposal.

All dead animals collected by the Council are incinerated and not stored in any way.

signed.

I recently lost my cat to a dog attack and the council took her remains, they "lost" her body and 2 weeks later to came to light that instead of taking her to the vets to be checked for a microchip (which she had and a collar) she was dumped in the local recycling centre. 6 weeks later and after legal action they claim it is not there fault.

I have set up a facebook page to join cat owners and carers together to make the home office aware that set laws need to be put in place where local councils, dog owners, car drivers are accountable for there actions when dealing with a cat. Please join the cause. We are currently campaigning to the big cat companies aka Cat Protection, Whiskas, Felix, Iams and rescues to get behind us owners/carers and get this changed/sorted.

I was, unpleasantly, surprised to learn that this isn't done as a routine anyway!  >:(

In ancient times cats were worshiped as gods; they have not forgotten this.

It was brought to my attention that 90% of councils and/or cleansing depts. don't scan cats that are found dead and this should be done!!
not only to return the cat for the owner to do what they see fit but also so that owners can get closure when their babies go missing.

Please remember to click on the link in the email you are sent or your signature will not be counted.

Thank you
